Division 11 week 4 postgame, week 5 preview.

The top 10 in the CIFss poll for Division 11 & the calpreps ratings are in full agreement this week.

#1 Culver City (4-0). See my posts on Culver City & the Ocean League for details.

#2 Arroyo (5-0) of El Monte. They opened league play with their second shut out in a row, matching my 56-0 victory projection against a pretty lousy Gabrielino (1-3). This week, Arroyo travels to face Rosemead (1-4) who rates as just slightly better than Gabrielino. I will pick a 49-7 victory by Arroyo as the best possible result for Rosemead.

#3 Rancho Mirage had the week off and will ease back into play at home against their last non-league opponent, a soft Bell Gardens (1-3). Bell Gardens has shown some ability to score against lesser opponents, I will predict a 38-14 Rancho victory.

#4 Arcadia (2-2, 1-0) had a crucial league opener against Muir (2-2) of Pasadena and Arcadia delivered. I said if their passing game was successful, and they had 275 yards, they would win this game & win they did. They did even a little better than I expected, perhaps with the help of 2 turnovers by Muir. Arcadia won 35-19. Last week I said that a win against Muir would make them the favorites for second place, but Burroughs (2-1,1-0) of Burbank is now rated ahead of Muir and directly behind Arcadia in the Pacific division. Burroughs beat struggling league opponent Pasadena (0-4) 45-34. Pasadena may not be quite as bad as their record indicates but Burroughs will definitely have to play up to the level of Arcadia to have a chance at stealing the win. Burroughs has not been held to less than 23 points in their first three games this year, but they have also struggled defensively and I bet the Arcadia QB can give them fits. I will pick a 35-28 Arcadia victory.

#5
Hillcrest (4-1) of Riverside moved up 2 or 3 spots in the rankings this week and had about all the scare they could afford from Temescal Canyon (2-3) in Hillcrest's 23-21 or 23-22 victory. A one point difference in score reporting between calpreps and maxpreps. Hillcrest had almost double the total yards of what TC had but still struggled to put the game away. Hillcrest has struggled to put most of their opponents away but the talent level of the other teams has at least been in the competitive range and should have them prepared for easy street, also known as River Valley league play. Only Patriot (3-1) of Riverside looks capable of any serious challenge to a Hillcrest league title. Hillcrest will be off next week then slide into league play in what should be an opening league victory against Ramona (3-2) of Riverside.

#6 Covina (4-1) moved up in both top 10 rankings this week and had an easy 49-14 victory in their last non-league game against lightly regarded Walnut (1-4) last weekend. Covina has a bye this week in preparation for the biggest league game against San Dimas (2-2) in which Covina should be solidly favored but a win will be crucial to assuring a division 11 playoff spot.

#7 Segerstrom (4-1) of Santa Ana dropped down a couple of spots in the rankings after beating lightly regarded Northwood (1-4) of Irvine last Friday by a score of 40-12. Segerstrom will have a bye this week, in preparation for the opening of Golden West league play in what could be one of the more tightly contested leagues, at least in places 1 through 5. Segerstrom is the favorite right now, but 4 of their 5 league opponents rate out good enough for an upset victory. First up will be a game against Ocean View (3-1) of Huntington Beach on 10/06.

#8 Sultana (3-2) of Hesperia gets some love in the polls this week after a surprising victory over Summit (3-2) of Fontana. Sultana senior QB Michael Mendoza was 12 of 21 for 175 yards and 3 TD's. Unfortunately for Sultana, they are unlikely to be able to rise into one of the top 3 spots in their tough Mojave River league and will likely miss the D-11 playoffs. Sultana will take this week off and prepare for Serrano (0-5) who has been an impressive program in recent years but is struggling against superior teams in the preseason. This game could be VERY close. I pick it as a top game among those I follow, next week.

#9 Katella (4-1) of Anaheim has weathered the toughest tests they had on their schedule. They squeaked by their second toughest opponent last week in beating Ocean View (3-1) of Huntington Beach 34-33. Katella has this weekend off before they start Orange League play. The Orange League should be renamed the "modest" league because there ain't much to boast about in this league and I once again declare Katella to be a lock for Orange League champions and a D-11 playoff spot.

#10 Lakeside (5-0) of Lake Elsinore easily dispensed with their last non-league opponent, beating Vista del Lago (0-4) 42-6. Lakeside has a bye this week and they will need it. They start Sunbelt League play on 10/06 on the road against Heritage (4-1) of Romoland. Lakeside's 5-0 record is about the only thing that they have better than what Heritage has for football.

The CIF-SS D-11 poll mentions Nordhoff (4-0), Westminster (3-1) and Ontario Christian (4-1) as other teams of note. Nordhoff has had a nice run but will not likely make the playoffs from their 4 team league. Westminster and Ontario Christian currently project as 3rd place finishers in their respective 6 team leagues but with Westminster facing multiple tough, but winnable, league games just to get to third. Calpreps has Victor Valley (2-3), ranked 13th in D-11, currently projecting to 2nd place in their 5 team Desert Sky league with only Barstow (0-5) perceived as a minor threat. Pacific (4-0) of San Bernardino is 14th ranked and a playoff lock with only Moreno Valley (2-2) a possible threat to a Mountain Valley league championship. 16th ranked Crean Lutheran (3-2) looks like a second place team out of the 4 team Academy League and therefore also a playoff lock.

Ocean League post week 4, week 5 pregame

Lawndale (4-0) managed to overcome their toughest preleague opponent in San Pedro by a score of 35-26. San Pedro led 20-14 at the half and after three quarters but they could not keep Jordan Wilmore bottled up the whole game and Lawndale exploded for 21 4th quarter points. See the Daily Breeze article for details:

http://www.dailybreeze.com/sports/2...elps-lawndale-football-team-outlast-san-pedro.

Lawndale should be able to defeat Torrance handily. A shutout is possible as Lawndale can handle physical teams, the one element that Torrance definitely has some of.

Culver City (4-0) easily dispensed with LA City University High by a score of 59-0. Culver QB Jonathan Martin was 12 of 17 for 266 yards with 6 TD's and no interceptions. Brandon Oum had 8 rushes for 91 yards and a TD and Joshua Ford added 54 yards on 5 carries. Next week's contest against Dorsey (0-4) may be the toughest game of the preleague season. Don't be fooled by Dorsey's record, they have been playing highly talented to elite level (St. John Bosco) teams so far. Culver will be the easiest opponent they will have faced to date.

El Segundo (4-0) took care of Torrance by a score of 41-10, it was only 20-10 after 3 quarters as Torrance's grind it out wing T run offense probably limited the El Segundo offensive opportunities. But Torrance was not able to throw the ball at all when they needed it as their QB was 0 for 3 on the few passing opportunities they took. El Segundo QB Mathew Romero was 11 of 18 for 216 yards and 3 TD's. El Segundo takes on the even less capable South Torrance (0-4) next week before they open league play at home vs Culver City.

Hawthorne (4-1) had an even more rude awakening than I thought it would be. As Leuzinger(2-3) beat them 55-14. See the Daily Breeze article for details:

http://www.dailybreeze.com/sports/2...hawthorne-its-first-loss-to-retain-mayors-cup

Hawthorne will take the week off to lick its wounds and prepare for what should be a nice easy league opener at home vs Beverly Hills on 10/06.

Santa Monica(1-4) was able to break into the win column with a 26-0 defeat of lowly South Torrance. Pretty good offensive game for WR/RB Melvin Hicks and on defense for LB Dennis Sebastian Acosta. Santa Monica is taking a bye before they open league play on 10/06 against Lawndale. Samo has their work cut out for them.

Beverly Hills(0-5) lost 44-0 to Peninsula(3-2) of Palos Verdes. Peninsula is not regarded as a particularly outstanding program, but they are certainly on a level significantly above Beverly Hills. BH will also take a week off, then travel to face Hawthorne(4-1) on 10/06. Hawthorne will relish running up the score in a league game.

Culver City post game 4, pre-game week 5

The Culver City Centaurs dominated LA City University High in a 59-0 victory. It was 45-0 at the half. The Centaurs had 402 yards passing & rushing combined along with holding Uni High to just 88 total yards and 2 turnovers by Uni. Uni was not supposed to be in the same class as Culver and the result confirms it. That is the last of any easy game Culver City will see for the next three weeks as they face progressively tougher opponents, Dorsey (0-4), then league starts, at El Segundo (4-0), then Lawndale (4-0) at home.

Don't be deceived by Dorsey's record, Dorsey's 4 losses are against Calabasas, Serra of Gardena, St. John Bosco and Lincoln (4-1) of San Diego. The Centaurs now project as the favorite in the contest, but I am still a little cautious with any confidence because of the level of competition Dorsey has been playing against. A good solid Centaur victory would be a good sign with the two toughest league games coming right after, but not sure I can project it that way. This should provide some level of competition for the Centaurs coming into league.

I will predict a 35-24 Centaur victory.

Division 11, week 4 preview

The top five teams in Division 11 are aligned the same in both the CIFss D-11 poll & the calpreps.com ratings.

#1 is Culver City (3-0). See my post on Culver City for details. Should be an easy victory this week. https://californiapreps.forums.rivals.com/threads/culver-city-post-game-3-week-4-preview.4129/

#2 is Arroyo (4-0) of El Monte. This should be the second easiest game of the season for Arroyo as they open league play at home against Gabrielino (1-2). Gabrielino was only able to muster 16 points in their win against horrible Sierra Vista (0-3) and scored 7 each in their two losses. Arroyo has scored no less than 28 in each game, all against tougher teams.

I am projecting a 56-0 Arroyo win.

#3 Rancho Mirage (3-1) gets a week off to collect itself and figure out what went wrong against a tough Palm Desert (3-1) that beat them 21-24.

#4 Arcadia (1-2) had a bye last week before they start Pacific league play this week against Muir (2-1). Currently, Arcadia projects to finish second and Muir third in the Pacific league so this is a key matchup. One of the big Division 11 games this week. Both teams have played La Salle (2-2) with Arcadia beating them 20-10 in their opener and Muir losing last week 21-20. Muir rallied from 21-6 to score twice in the fourth quarter including the TD to make it 21-20 with about a minute to go in the game. Muir attempted a 2 point conversion that failed. Muir had 2 turnovers that hurt them badly. Muir was able to stuff any La Salle run game but the turnovers and the La Salle passing game were trouble. A win for Arcadia establishes them as league favorites for second place and a playoff spot, but the two teams to follow Muir also are potential trap games. If Arcadia can throw the ball well, they should win. Muir could have come away with a victory, so I expect this game to be close with a LOT of meaning for both teams.

I will predict a 21-13 Arcadia victory.

#5 Segerstrom (3-1) of Santa Ana, should have an easy game this week against Northwood (1-3) of Irvine. Northwood's only victory was a squeaker against a bad Valley High (0-4) of Santa Ana. Northwood has shown trouble scoring against quality opponents while Segerstrom has had some ability to score against weaker opponents.

I will project a 39-7 Segerstrom victory.

#6 Ontario Christian(4-0) has rode a string of light opponents, including a couple of cream puffs, to their undefeated point in the preleague season. They rode the strength of their running game to a 27-17 victory over a lightly regarded Bishop. Their passing game looks like an Achilles heel right now. Senior QB Kevin Jack is an effective thrower for OC but did not play the whole game last week and the other QB was ineffective. They will need a healthy Jack to compete this week. Reality strikes this week and they will NOT be undefeated any longer as they travel to Valley Christian(2-2) of Cerritos. VC beat a decent Rancho Christian(2-2) of Temecula last week 62-32. VC was able to run & throw the ball last week against RC with senior QB Isaac Joseph going 9 of 11 for 215 & 4 TD's. The running game was also stout with senior Gianni Hurd leading the way with 221 yards on just 11 carries and 4 TD's. They had 328 yards rushing overall. OC has been able to play a little D against lesser opponents. OC will have the week off after this game and then head into league play. This sets OC up well to be prepared for the tougher games in their league and maybe steal second place from Notre Dame(2-2) of Riverside.

I will project a 21-42 loss for Ontario Christian. It could be worse if OC QB Kevin Jack is not healthy.

#7 is where the CIFss poll and calpreps.com start to slightly differ. Calpreps has Covina(3-1) at #7 while the CIFss poll has them at #9. Covina takes on another lightweight this week, on the road against Walnut(1-3). Covina won easily at home last week against a similarly rated opponent Montclair(2-1) by a score of 49-20.

I will project similar this week. Covina wins 49-21.

#8 in the calpreps ratings is Hillcrest(3-1) of Riverside. They are #7 if the CIFss poll for D-11. Hillcrest has a fairly soft schedule, but among the softies, this might be their second toughest opponent they are facing, on the road against Temescal Canyon(2-2) of Lake Elsinore. TC relies mostly on the strength of their running game and has had 3 different guys taking reps at QB, with some level of modest success. It will likely not be enough against Ontario Christian.

I will project a 21-14 Hillcrest victory.

#9 is Lakeside(4-0) of Lake Elsinore, in the calpreps.com ratings, but they are #8 if the CIFss poll. Lakeside plays in the tough Sunbelt League along with Temescal Canyon. While currently projecting to finish ahead of Temescal Canyon, Lakeside is unlikely to rise above 4th in league and will have to hope for an unlikely at-large playoff berth. They did not do that well last week against lightweight Orange Vista((1-3) of Perris, escaping with a 34-28 victory. Fortunately, this weeks opponent, Vista del Lago(0-3) of Moreno Valley, is even weaker. Lakeside will get a week off after this game to enjoy their undefeated preleague performance and two weeks to prepare to get snuffed by powerhouse Heritage(4-0) of Romoland.

I will project a 34-7 Lakeside victory.

#10 in the calpreps ratings is Crean Lutheran(2-2) of Irvine. The CIFss picked Pacific(4-0) of San Bernardino as their #10 team. CL gets one of their 3 Academy league games a little early as they face lowly St. Pius X-St. Matthias Academy(1-3) of Downey. SPSM might be a little more dangerous than I thought as they were able to play Cantwell-Sacred Heart(3-0) of Montebello to a 32-31 loss last week. 4 interceptions and 2 lost fumbles by CSH might have helped make it interesting. I still think CL should win this one easily.

I will project a 42-14 Crean Lutheran victory.

Pacific(4-0) of San Bernardino deserves mention being #10 in the CIFss poll & rated #12 by calpreps. They managed to schedule a team even softer than all of their prior preleague opponents in getting Bloomington(1-2) to come visit. Pacific somehow managed to play down to the level of West Valley(0-4) of Hemet last week coming away with just a 20-10 win against team they were expected to blow out. Pacific was trailing 10-6 at the end of the third quarter. Does not look like there were any significant personnel changes at the skill positions. West Valley does project to be their toughest opponent they have faced so far. I will expect Pacific to rebound because of the weakness of their opponent.

I will project a 42-6 Pacific win.

The Ocean League post week 3, and week 4 preview

Lawndale continues to be the class of the Ocean League and for good reason. They walloped Leuzinger 63-6. But Leuzinger is just not the high level opponent they were without the graduation of Kaymen Cureton. They are now playing at the level they would normally play at without such a star player. Here is a link to the DailyBreeze article on the Lawndale game vs Leuzinger: http://www.dailybreeze.com/sports/2...dale-routs-leuzinger-carson-edges-westchester

You would think that after Lawndale has played St. Bonaventure, Crespi and Leuzinger in their first 3 weeks that you would call them battle tested, but all three programs are having serious down years in comparison to their prior level of performance. So that leaves this week's game at LA City San Pedro (3-1) as their biggest test of the preseason. SP had 3 soft opponents to open their season, then lost 56-42 to Downey (3-1), a team that rates comparable to Lawndale. The game with Downey was tied at 35-35 after 3 quarters.

San Pedro has not scored less than 42 points in each of their 4 games and Lawndale has only given up 13 in 3 games. Something's gotta give. Pedro was susceptible to both the run and the pass against a good Downey team. I doubt SP can stop superstar RB Jordan Wilmore and if star Lawndale QB Jalen Hamler is effective providing just enough passing offense to prevent any lockdown on Wilmore, then this one will be done.

How about a projection of a 48-28 Lawndale victory.

Culver City, see my separate preview. Click here: http://bit.ly/CentaursWk4Preview

The El Segundo Eagles continued to impress, beating Mira Costa 21-6. The Mustangs should have been motivated to take the win after losing to the Eagles last year but El Segundo was able to stymie the Mustang's passing attack, leaving them with only their ground game to work with. Mira Costa only converted 1 of 11 third downs. With the help of a Danny McEntee kickoff return for a TD, El Segundo was able to pull out this tight defensive battle that was just 7-6 at one point. See the Daily Breeze link for more details: http://www.dailybreeze.com/sports/20170915/el-segundo-football-team-stifles-mira-costa

Hawthorne (4-0) continues their win streak as expected. They beat Bernstein (1-3) easily 49-12. It was 37-6 at the half. Senior Hawthorne QB Joshua Robledo combined 2 passing and 3 rushing TD's to lead his team. Robledo had 209 yards rushing on just 8 carries while junior RB J. Taylor III had 107 yards on 7 carries. Finally Hawthorne faces a tough test this week. They face Leuzinger. The Leuzinger game may have looked a lot tougher at the beginning of the year but, while Hawthorne is still the under dog, the teams rate close enough that an upset might be possible. At any rate, I do not expect another blow out by Hawthorne.

I will project a 24-19 Leuzinger victory.

The Santa Monica Vikings (0-4) finally took on an opponent at a level in which they could compete but still came away with a 12-26 loss to Dana Hills (1-3). It was interesting to see that the Vikings have opened up into a spread offense. I could have sworn they were a wing-T, or some run variant, at the beginning of the season.

This week gets even better for the Vikings as they take on their most winnable game in the preseason against South Torrance (0-3). The teams are comparably rated. Junior Rodney Crayton, #2, looks like he might be the Vikings' best player.

I will project a 35-34 Viking victory.

Beverly Hills (0-4) got to play 2 weeks of exciting competitive football losing 14-19 two weeks ago, then just 16-20 to Cerritos (1-3) in what was likely their best opportunity at a win this season. It gets tougher the rest of the way. While Peninsula (2-2) of Palos Verdes is not considered a top echelon program, they will be the second toughest opponent BH has faced in the preseason and I don't think BH can compete at the Peninsula level. Peninsula does not appear to be a team that will be merciful to weaker opponents (they beat Sotomayer 72-6 this year),

I will project a very generous 7-42 loss for BH.

Culver City post game 3, week 4 preview

The Culver City Centaurs played their best game so far this year against the North Torrance Saxons, beating them 42-7. North was only successful on 2 third down conversions and the Centaurs intercepted them twice. It is a big deal when the defense can be highlighted in recent years at Culver City. The offense was pretty much a juggernaut as usual. Senior QB Jonathan Martin had yet another 5 TD pass performance on 13 of 27 for 255 yards with no interceptions. Senior RB Brandon Oum added 106 rushing on just 5 carries, one of them being for 62 yards and a TD.

Next week the Centaurs (3-0) face LA City Division II University (2-2) on Thursday. Don't let their record fool you, they should not offer much resistance. The 2 wins are against vastly inferior opponents. Culver City is the most talented team that Uni will likely face all year. San Fernando does not rate out nearly as high as Culver and Uni lost to them 35-3. The strategy should be to dominate the game early so the back-ups can play most of the second half and rest some of the starters for the 3 game stretch to follow, starting with Dorsey. Then league starts against El Segundo, then Lawndale. How good the Centaurs are, will be determined during that 3 game stretch.

Division 11, top 5, week 3 preview with results

This is an update to the previously posted preview, with results added, and some minimal commentary.
The Culver City Centaurs (2-0) stayed at #1 in the CIF-SS Division 11 poll but dropped to #2 in the calpreps D-11 rankings, mostly due to the strength of the Rancho Mirage upset of the more highly rated La Quinta last week.

Culver played another lower rated opponent in Torrance (0-2) last week and they are back on the road in the Torrance area this week, this time against "North" Torrance (2-1). This will be the toughest game so far for the Centaurs but Culver is still a significant favorite. Some significant challenges as North has shown an ability to intercept opposing QB's.

Culver has faced 2 sturdy rushing teams, so I don't expect North to bring anything more than CC's prior two opponents. North will throw the ball a little better than Torrance. #6 looked like a possible playmaker at WR for North. North struggled offensively against more talented teams so far this year, but played some good defense.

I will project a 38-21 victory for Culver.
The Centaurs got a 42-7 victory. This might have been the easiest of the three Centaur victories so far this season. Despite North Torrance's better rating prior to the game, than CC's prior two opponents, I found North to be a less physical team, less organized and having no significant speed difference from prior opponents. They got themselves into trouble multiple times with penalties. The QB was only modestly effective, similar to the prior 2 teams, but then again, I might be a little spoiled.

Rancho Mirage (3-0) made the big jump from #5 in the CIF-SS D-11 poll to #2 and to #1 in the calpreps ratings. Their 38-21 win over La Quinta was a surprising eye opener to most. One would expect a closer defensive type of score based upon their first two games but not sure what will happen offensively for Rancho after they put up 38 on LQ. Will they continue to excel?

Rancho takes on Palm Desert (2-1). PD got punched in the mouth 26-2 by the higher rated Yucaipa last week. PD is about 2/3 running to 1/3 passing with only 2 passing TD's & 2 interceptions. Looks like PD might be able to play some D. Lets go with a similar score to what Rancho did a couple of weeks ago,

a 20-14 win for Rancho.
Calpreps rates it as an upset, but I did think Palm Desert could play some D and apparently they did in their 24-21 PD victory. Rancho's RB Marques Prior and QB David Talley were not completely shut down, but their effectiveness was limited enough for Palm Desert to come up with the slightly surprising victory.

Arroyo
(3-0) of El Monte moves down from #2 to #3 in the CIF-SS D-11 poll and moves up to #3 from #4 in the calpreps ratings. They beat their toughest opponent so far this year in a 31-10 win over Schurr (2-1) last week.

Things get easier this week with a road game against Rowland (2-0) of Rowland Heights. Those 2 Rowland wins were against much worse teams than Arroyo. This game could be a rude awakening for Rowland. I expect Arroyo to easily win this game and the remainder of all their regular season games with only South El Monte having any possibility of putting up any resistance.

I'll project a 35-21 Arroyo win.
It was even easier than I projected as Arroyo won 49-0. It was 42-0 at the half. Junior QB Ernesto Camacho threw for a blistering 16 of 18 for 266 yards & 3 TD's. Senior RB Steven Ocariz had 66 yards on just 8 carries with 3 of them going for TD's.

Arcadia
(1-2) goes from #2 to #4 in the calpreps ratings & #3 to #5 in the CIF-SS poll. Their 22-6 loss to Hart (1-1) last week is not really any embarrassment at all. Practically a positive. They did not have much of a drop in either cuz Hart is still considered a much higher level program. Let's hope that those 2 upper level opponents the last couple of weeks pays off in 2 weeks as Arcadia starts league play in their Pacific league against their second toughest opponent in the Pacific League, Muir (2-0) of Pasadena on 9/24.

Arcadia has a bye this week
so they have 2 weeks to prepare. Muir is nowhere near the level of Cathedral or Hart but a win against Muir could mean an almost certain lock on a D-11 playoff spot as they are not likely to fall lower than 2nd in league. A loss and Arcadia will have to make sure that they win 5 of the 6 remaining league games to get a supposed lock on a 3rd place playoff spot. Muir will be preoccupied with another non-league game this week against LaSalle (1-2) of Pasadena. Muir shut out its 2 first opponents and scored at least 38 in each game. LaSalle should be tougher and Arcadia will certainly be tougher. Arcadia is favored right now. We will see what happens after this week's games.

Westminster (2-0) is #5 in calpreps & #4 in this week's CIF-SS D-11 poll. Westminster faces a weaker program, Katella (2-1), this week. Right now Westminster projects out to win all their games but there are significant challenges facing them and they have not blown out teams in their first two games, winning by 4 & 14 against inferior opponents.

But if Isaac Barrera can do anything about it, Westminster will win em all. If ya don't believe me, check out the highlight reel of the DT/OL. Katella has not played anybody of the level of Westminster. Katella beat Esperanza last week 31-6 and all I can say is "Oh, how the mighty have fallen". I have been around awhile and I seem to recall some good Esperanza teams in the past but they have apparently fallen on hard times in recent years. Ah yes, I have it, they lost 42-49 to Loyola in the Division 1 championship game of 2005.

I will project a 21-7 Westminster win this week.
Perhaps the Katella(3-1) folks read my post and went out determined to prove me wrong? Katella QB Nathan Arrington looks quite effective on the highlight reel in the Knights 22-20 win. Westminster drops to #15 in calpreps Division 11 ratings while Katella climbs up to #12. We will have to wait until Monday to see what the CIF poll does. Westminster's Isaac Barrera still had his moments for Westminster, but Arrington's ability to throw the ball and his own 5'11", 215 pound built like a linebacker, made him a tougher target for Barrera. I did not see any highlights on Barrera playing offense and it looked he was missing from a good portion of the defensive snaps.

Jeff Tuttle sparks 4-0 Mission Hills to win over Carlsbad

By David A. Willauer-Contributing Writer-Carlsbad High School-Carlsbad, CA-Friday, September 15, 2017-In a key Avocado League contest in a battle of undefeated teams that was held at Carlsbad High School, the Mission Hills Grizzlies known for outstanding football players but this time it was again quarterback Jack Tuttle (13 completions out of 23 attempts for 169 yards) amazed the crowd with his Rich Gannon style of passing, running and good plays threw 3 touchdown passes of 31 yards to Chris Olave (4 rec for 95 yards), 7 yards to Damon Wigand and 37 yards to Maurice Jones (6 receptions for 65 yards) defeated the previously undefeated Carlsbad Lancers by a 35-7 score.

Damon Wigand (13 carries for 75 yards) scored on a 7 yard run and Maurice Jones (1 carry for 33 yards) scored on a 33 yard run.

The Lancers of Carlsbad scored their only touchdown as qb Troy Bloomquist 18 completions out of 28 attempts for 133 yards threw a 5 yard pass to Noah Vella.

Chris Hauser Head Football Coach at Mission Hills: " Our squad did well today as we had a lot of guys that had a lot of touches of the ball as in Maurice Jones, Damon Wigand, coming out of the backfield and making outstanding catches on the field but today where most of the attention goes out to Chris Olave but other ball players we are starting to grow as a team since we are 4-0 but focus on 1 game at a time."

Jeff Tuttle qb for Mission Hills: "Our fans have been very supporting of us throughout the season and I have to deal with adversity aches, pains and sores but you have to overcome those issues."

"Our squad did very well tonight, personaIly I feel that I need to be a more consistant in my gameplan I have to work on every single drive, to get the first down along with moving the ball, those are the skills that I have to keep on working my skills in practice to improve every game." said Jeff Tuttle.

"For the 2 touchdown passes that I threw, the receivers made good plays and to give credit to our offensive line they all did well they read my reads well and threw the ball for touchdowns."

With the win the Grizzlies of Mission Hills improve to 4-0 and will host the Pirates of Oceanside High School, while the Lancers of Carlsbad fall to 3-1 and will be at Lacosta Canyon High School kickoff for both games at 7:00 pm will on Friday, September 22, 2017

So who is going to the playoffs in Division 11?

I know, it is WAY early for this, but based upon the calpreps ratings, which can still fluctuate some, it looks like you will need to finish first or second in your league to guarantee your team a playoff spot in Division 11. Some third place teams are likely to get in but possibly not all of them. There are 37 teams in D-11 with only 16 playoff spots.

Biggest surprises might be that currently 20th rated Katella is a lock to finish first in their league and be in the playoffs. Other teams likely to finish first are Rancho Mirage, Arroyo of El Monte, Westminster (although they are by no means a lock on first OR 2nd), Hillcrest of Riverside and Pacific of San Bernardino.

Second place teams could be Culver City, Arcadia, Covina, St. Genevieve, Victor Valley, Crean Lutheran, Oak Park and currently 18th rated Jurupa Hills (1-2). I consider Crean Lutheran and Jurupa Hills to be locks to finish 2cnd in their leagues.

That leaves 14 of 16 playoff spots filled with as many as 4 other D-11 teams finishing third in a qualifying league.

Ontario Christian, Segerstrom and 28th rated Rancho Alamitos (1-1) of Garden Grove all currently project to third place finishes in qualifying leagues with 33rd ranked Ramona (2-1) of Riverside having an outside shot at finishing in a qualifying third place. Lakeside also projects to an outside chance at finishing third, but any at-large hopes for the playoffs will likely not happen in D-11.

So my advice to coaches and players in D-11: plan to finish in 2nd or better. That is the only way to lock in a playoff spot before tiebreakers may need to be used in consideration for which team makes the playoffs from third place.

Division 11, teams 6-10, week 3 preview

Both the CIFss Division 11 poll and the calpreps.com ratings agree on Hillcrest (2-1) of Riverside as the #6 team in D-11. This week they face JW North (1-1) also of Riverside. This game is underway as I write. North looks to have a little better record this year as opposed to last (1-11). But they are not likely to match up with Hillcrest & Elijah Dominguez. I say Hillcrest wins by about 2 TD's. Maybe 28-14. Hillcrest should go undefeated the rest of the way as all the rest of their opponents rate out worse than North. Final update: Hillcrest 23, North 14.

#7 in both the poll & rating is Covina (2-1). Covina did not make the CIF-SS D-11 top 10 last week. Covina opened their season by losing just to D-11 high rated Arroyo (3-0) of El Monte then easily dispatched 2 lesser opponents. They have another easy opponent this week as they are home against Montclair (2-0). Don't be fooled by Montclair's record. They beat a couple of patsies. Covina is much better than them. Oh, well, just noticed this one is underway too, and no, I did not notice till right now but Covina is leading 42-14 with 9 minutes to go in the third quarter. Covina can run & throw with equal success and they were a handful for Arroyo. Covina plays in the 6 team Valle Vista league and projects to finish second and definitely no worse than third. They are likely to make the playoffs in D-11.

Lakeside (3-0) of Lake Elsinore moved up to #8, from #9 in the DIF-SS D-11 poll & is #9 in the calpreps ratings. They continue with its light scheduling. This week they face D-13 Orange Vista (1-2). Next week's game projects even easier. I believe I previously mentioned that the strategy must be to finish with a winning record and hope for an at-large berth. They have an outside shot at third place in the tough 6 team Sunbelt league but they will not be prepared at all for the pummeling they are going to take from Heritage (3-0) and Paloma Valley (2-1) in league. Their hope is to steal a win from Elsinore (3-0) of Wildomar, & win their other 2 winnable league games.

I believe Ontario Christian (3-0) is new in both the CIF-SS D-11 poll this week at #9 & #8 in the calpreps ratings. They squeaked by a decent Ontario High (2-1) in week 0, 21-20, and beat two weak opponents the last couple of weeks. It may have been the movement of other teams out of the poll & ratings that warranted OC's placement in the top 10, as opposed to their level of play. Senior Kevin Jack seems to be a reliable QB going 32 of 51 for 401 yards in 3 games with 5 TD's and no interceptions recorded in maxpreps. But it is their stable of junior running backs that have helped the team combine for 772 yards rushing in 3 games. Moses Serrano is they guy they look to carry into the end zone as he has 6 of the 9 running TD's. Bishop (2-0) has a deceiving record as their first two games were against cream puffs. I will project a 28-14 OC win.

Segerstrom (2-1) of Santa Ana is #10 in the CIF=SS D-11 top 10 but they are #11 in the calpreps ratings. Segerstrom's 28-0 loss to a good El Modena last week helps prepare them for tough league play. Segerstrom has just the right level of opponent to face this week in Godinez (1-1) of Santa Ana. Godinez is rated 4.8 by calpreps while Segerstrom is currently a 2. A win against Godinez would be a good sign that they can make good things happen in the challenging 6-team Golden West League. Based upon power ratings, I will have to project a 21-14 Godinez victory, but I am sure Segerstrom would be quite happy reversing that score.

The last of our top 10 teams is Pacific (3-0) of San Bernardino. They have the distinction of having scored the most points among all D-11 teams and having given up the fewest. The only problem is, they have not played anyone with any talent. That trend will continue right into league play. They face West Valley (0-3) of Hemet. WV rates as slightly better than the last couple of Pacific opponents but I don't expect this to be any closer than a 35-14 Pacific victory. My only concern for them is that they will have not played anybody near the level of two of their league opponents, Rubidoux (1-1) and Moreno Valley (1-1). Calpreps ratings still projects them as comfortable winners but I wonder about that first game, Rubidoux, in particular. Will they be ready to play an opponent that can actually push back? Pacific should finish first in their weak 6 team Mountain Valley league and certainly no worse than third.

Division 11, week 2 predictions with results added

Culver City is #1 D-11 this week. The Centaurs face "Torrance" this week, who will be running their wing T. Torrance (0-1) lost their opener 15-26 to Marina (2-0) of Huntington Beach. They could be a slightly better team than they were last year, but not likely to be good enough to bring down this high flying Culver team. It was 49-14 last year, I expect similar this year.
UPDATE: Culver did pretty much as projected, winning 48-20, but the game was closer than the final score as the Centaurs were only up 13-7 at the half and Torrance had scored first to open the game. Fortunately for Culver, with their high flying offense, coming from behind is often quite possible.

Arcadia (1-1) has the #2 spot in calpreps ratings & #3 in the CIFss poll. They played way up out of their division losing to D-2 Cathedral 0-49. Perhaps having played Cathedral last week will make Hart seem like a cupcake in comparison. I expect Arcadia to lose by at least a couple of TD's to an angry Hart squad.
UPDATE: It is never good to encounter Hart the week after they have lost. Still Arcadia had it's moments and showed why they are in consideration as a top D-11 team, losing 6-22.

Arroyo (2-0) is #2 in the CIF-SS D-11 poll & #4 in the calpreps rankings. Schurr will not be significantly inferior. Schurr won a close one in week 0 against California (0-2) of Whittier 21-14. Then they came back and dominated Garfield (1-1) 46-14 and Schurr's senior QB Miguel Aguero is on fire throwing for 3 TD's against Cali & 5 against Garfield. Their receivers catch & run with the ball well. Watch out for that bubble screen. They love to run it. Arroyo comes in with a slightly better rating, but I would call this a toss up. The good (or bad) news for Arroyo is that this should be the toughest game of the regular season. This Schurr team will be the only one that will come up to playoff competition level before the playoffs, but that also means Arroyo is a lock to make it to the playoffs.
UPDATE:If that was a playoff level opponent, then Arroyo is in pretty good shape. They won 31-10. It was just 17-10 at the half, so that sounds like good second half adjustments by the Arroyo coaching staff and any time you only give up 10, that is good defense.

St. Genevieve is #3 in the calpreps rankings & #4 in the CIFss poll. They will get a stiffer test this week (than in week 0) from West Ranch (1-0) who beat a struggling Simi Valley (0-2) 55-7 in week 0. St. Gen is significantly higher rated than West this week but not sure if those ratings can be trusted. If St. Gen wins by 2 TD's or more, their ratings may be justified. I will go out on a limb and pick West to win in a close contest.
UPDATE: St. Gen was in this game until 8 minutes were left in the third quarter. They only trailed 7-6 at the half. But West found a way to get untracked, their QB getting 5 TD passes on just 14 completions. West did have a successful run game too as junior Ryan Camacho had 188 yards on just 11 carries. St. Gen's QB, Anthony Smets had a decent day going 20 of 27 for 219 yards with 1 interception. Ray Beauchamp contributed 102 yards rushing but needed 23 carries to accomplish it. Based upon the early scoring and the possibility that West Ranch might still be a little under rated, I think St. Gen still has nothing to worry about too much. They need to learn their lessons and take them into their critical Santa Fe League games as only 2 teams are assured of playoff selection from their 4 team league.

Rancho Mirage (2-0) faces their toughest game of the regular season against LaQuinta (1-0). LQ easily beat North (0-1) of Riverside last week 35-6. While Rancho may be a tougher opponent than North for LQ, I still expect them to win, perhaps by 2 TD's. Rancho is 1 dimensional. RB Marques Prior will have to carry Rancho. Rancho, much like Arroyo, should still cruise into the D-11 playoffs as there is no serious competition for them in the De Anza league.
UPDATE: Rancho Mirage might have the biggest D-11 upset of week 2 beating La Quinta 38-21. RB Marques Prior did carry Rancho with 133 yards rushing on 18 carries and 3 TD's. QB David Talley did just enough to keep the La Quinta defense honest completing 4 of 8 passes for 80 yards & also running for an additional 52 on 12 carries. Marques Prior also caused a fumble and intercepted a pass. Mario Montalvo had an 82 yard fumble recovery & run for a TD for Rancho. Rancho gave up 293 yards rushing to La Quinta's Derrick Kennedy, a junior, but I guess it did not matter.

Westminster (1-0) faces Marina (2-0) of Huntington Beach this week. Westminster had a modest 21-17 win over a less than stellar Garden Grove. Marina will be a tougher nut to crack, although Westminster still comes in with the better rating. Marina did not overwhelm either of their two low rated opponents the last 2 weeks. I will pick Westminster in a 21-17 victory. Marina would love to move into the same league as Westminster (the Golden West) & avoid their annual pummeling in the Sunset league.
UPDATE: Westminster beat Marina 34-20. No details on this game, some video highlights available. Let me say that Westminster's Isaac Barrera is a beast a DT & OL.

Segerstrom (2-0) of Santa Ana has pitched 2 straight shut outs winning 39-0 & 38-0, but against lower level opponents. They take a BIG step up this week hosting El Modena (1-0) of Orange. El Modena won last week's opener against Woodbridge (0-2) of Irvine 35-13. El Modena is rated about 50 points higher than Segerstrom's last opponent. El Modena's senior QB A.J. Esparanza was a very efficient 10 of 14 for 138 yards & 3 TD's. They also ran the ball for 230 total yards. Well balanced. While Segerstrom is likely to lose this game, this contest and next week against Godinez should help them be prepared for the winnable but possibly close games in league. Westminster & Segerstrom are not locks for the playoffs out of the Golden West league as either could win league or finish 4th in the 6 team league & 4th may not get you into a playoff spot.
UPDATE: Segerstrom lost this one 28-0, but the El Modena stats are not jaw dropping. This could be a learning game that could pay off when they need it, in Golden West League play.

Hillcrest
(1-1) of Riverside beat Jurupa Hills (1-1) in week 0, 34-15, but fell to the far superior Notre Dame (2-0) of Riverside, 25-49, per calpreps, or 25-36 per Maxpreps, last week. They face a much more reasonable, yet challenging opponent this week in Chino (1-1). Hillcrest rates as a slight favorite right now. QB Cordell Labrie & RB Elijah Dominguez are the fuel that makes Hillcrest go. J.L. Jefferson, a Junior, also gets some reps at QB. Dominguez had 211 yards receiving against Notre Dame, according to Maxpreps. Chino has some balance with enough successful QB action to keep other teams honest, but RB Derrin Henry is the star with 345 yards rushing in 2 games. Chino looks like they might be able to play good defense. I will predict that they can slow Hillcrest down enough to get the win in a close one. Hillcrest is also likely to handle all their River Valley league competition and be a lock for the D-11 playoffs.
UPDATE: Apparently Chino could not contain Elijah Dominguez, he caught passes for TD's, he ran for TD's and he can block for others to spring them for big yardage and TD's. Hillcrest won 36-28. You wanna stop Hillcrest, you gotta stop #5.

Lakeside (2-0) of Lake Elsinore has stacked their preleague schedule with creampuffs, but that is somewhat understandable as they are playing in a tough 6 team Sunbelt league & project to finish 4th which would require an overall winning record to have any chance for an at-large playoff spot should any be available. They won their first two games 33-0 & 33-7 but this week's opponent, Canyon Springs (1-0) should be somewhat tougher. Unfortunately, the stats show Lakeside as pretty one dimensional, leaning heavily on the capabilities of senior RB Adrian Burt. Lakeside has the better rating, but the 1 dimensional look of Lakeside has me concerned and I will pick Canyon Springs to win.
UPDATE: The capabilities of RB Adrian Burt are apparently substantial as he had 257 yards on 31 carries with 3 TD's & a long of 41 yards. Lakeside sophomore QB Dylan Bomhoff may have done just enough at QB to keep Canyon Springs honest completing 7 of 11 for 53 yards and one TD along with 1 interception. This one was certainly closer than Lakeside's first 2 games as they won just 29-23 and trailed at halftime 20-14. Sounds like good coaching adjustments at halftime.

Pacific (2-0) of San Bernardino won their first 2 in routs of 44-0 & 48-6 but the competition was very weak. They face what may be their toughest test of the preseason against Indian Springs (1-1) of San Bernardino, but there is already a comparison game and Indian Springs was only able to beat Jurupa Valley 28-14. Pacific should win this one and could go undefeated through the whole regular season, albeit against pretty weak competition, but they also should be a lock to be in the D-11 playoffs.
UPDATE: Pacific easily dispatched with Indian Springs in a 42-6 win. Pacific has only given up 12 points now in 3 games. RB Raziel Jordan rushed for 155 yards on 20 carries while QB Jshawn Wysinger ran for 108 on 10 carries including a 52 yarder. Wysinger also contributed through the air with 11 of 19 passing for 126 yards & 4 TD's with just 1 interception.

The Ocean League post week 2 & pregame week 3

Lawndale is the highly likely kings of the Ocean League and they said it again last week with emphasis in a 47-7 victory over Crespi. Read the Daily Breeze write up to get the full & complete story of that game: http://www.dailybreeze.com/sports/2...over-crespi-to-lead-lawndale-football-in-rout

Lawndale (2-0) hosts Leuzinger (1-2) next week. The 3 first teams on Lawndale's schedule this year all seem to be struggling, with Crespi's struggles extending beyond the current year, but nevertheless, would usually be worthy opponents for a team like Lawndale. But this is not the Lawndale of years past. Things have changed dramatically since the arrival of coach Travis Clarke a couple of years ago.

The CIFss poll now has Lawndale ranked #2 in Div. 5 behind Paraclete and I think they are worthy of their ranking. I expect the Cardinals to easily dispense with Leuzinger, just like they did with their prior two opponents. Ironically, it will take a City team, San Pedro (3-0), after Leuzinger, to finally provide any test for Lawndale and I still expect Lawndale to pass that test fairly easily.

El Segundo (2-0) continues to surprise beating Oak Park (1-1) 35-3. Junior QB Matt Romero continues to excel going 13 of 20 for 151 yards & 4 TD's with one interception. El Segundo did plenty of running too, rushing 31 times for 198 yards, the longest being a 36 yarder by senior Kyle Freeman. QB Romero also had a 23 yard scamper.

El Segundo will face Mira Costa (0-2) this week. By calpreps ratings, El Segundo's first week's opponent Leuzinger still rates out better than Mira Costa but I have a hard time believing that. Costa faced St. Francis (2-0) in week 1 and La Serna (2-1) in week 2. If Jonah Tavai is eligible and healthy, he can be a real disruptor on defense for Costa, but La Serna was able mount a substantial rushing attack offset by good passing numbers, so Costa is still a bit of a mystery to me. It may be that they are struggling to be productive on offense. But one thing I do know is that Costa lost a close one to El Segundo last year 14-18, and the Mustangs are probably not going to be in the mood to go 0-3 at the beginning of their season after losing to the Eagles last year.

I bring up Culver City (2-0) third because El Segundo has jumped ahead of the Centaurs in the latest calpreps power ratings. Culver should now know that the Eagles will be a tough league opener for them. The Centaurs certainly have the horses to win it, but it may be too close to call even with a few more preleague games to play. See my separate CC write up for details on the Centaurs.

Hawthorne (3-0) is the cinderella story of the Ocean League right now, but the problem is the clock has not struck midnight yet, and it won't until at least October 20th. While the score and some of the stats look very impressive, the Daily Breeze write up suggests that South could have given Hawthorne a much tougher game. http://www.dailybreeze.com/sports/2...l-stays-unbeaten-with-win-over-south-torrance
Still, Hawthorne definitely has offensive weapons and could be dangerous enough to cause trouble for Culver or El Segundo in the league standings battle. Hawthorne will have an easier game this week, hosting Bernstein (1-2) of Hollywood, an LA City D-3 nobody.

Santa Monica (0-3) dropped down in competition level last week and only lost 22-43 to Compton (2-1). Things get even more fun for them this week as they travel to Dana Hills (0-3), a team getting closer to their power rating. I think it will still be a Samo loss, but then comes South Torrance, a team that truly seems to be at their competition level.

Beverly Hills (0-3) scheduled a team at their competition level last week and had a close 14-19 loss to Malibu (2-0). At least BH can say their opponents they have faced are a combined 7-0 so far. This week they don't have that problem. They are traveling to Gahr High to play Cerritos (0-3)! This won't be easy for BH. Cerritos tries to run a balanced offense but seem to have an all or nothing passing offense with 17 completions in 55 attempts for 240 yards with 6 interceptions and 0 TD's. 13 receptions have gone to either Stacy King or Erik Baker. RB Tye Anderson had been trying to carry the team with 290 yards rushing in the first 2 games but it looks like he may have missed the last game against Gahr. That could be a hopeful sign for BH.

Culver City, post week 2, pregame week 3

The Culver City Centaurs defeated their week 2 opponent, Torrance, 48-20, at Torrance. The game was closer than the final score as Torrance scored first and was able to keep the high octane Culver air raid offense off the field for a good portion of the game. However, when the Centaur O got their chances, they usually made the most of them. Culver led just 13-7 at the half. CC struggled to contain the rushing game of their wing T opponent who featured FB Kyle Sell, 6'1", 225. He was a load to bring down, but was hampered for a portion of the game with what looked like some sort of leg injury that did not keep him out of the game, but may have limited his effectiveness at times. But I believe he may still have good rushing numbers.

Fortunately for CC, they were able to come up with enough stops to force Torrance to turn the ball over from time to time. When Culver got the ball, lightning often struck. QB Jonathan Martin had another big game, going 16 of 20 for 392 yards and 5 TD's with no interceptions. 7 different players caught balls from the Centaur QB with 4 different players scoring. Torrance did have an opportunity to grab a Culver pass or two but could not catch their opportunities. A dropped pass on offense could have helped them as well and they did have at least a couple of other successful passes. But the run game was the big problem for Culver. As Culver extended their lead in the second half, the chances of a comeback became more remote from that wing T offense. The Centaur rushing game had its moments too, collecting 138 yards rushing on just 12 carries. A 51 yard run by junior Joshua Ford was the highlight of the run game.

Culver is now 2-0 and will travel to yet another Pioneer League team, from Torrance (they are fairly close on the map), North Torrance (2-1) this Friday. They squeaked by LA City Banning 14-6 in week 0, lost 20-7 to Aliso Niguel on the road and embarrassed Bishop Montgomery 33-9 on Bishop's home field.

By calpreps.com power ratings, this should be the Centaurs toughest game so far, although I will be interested to see how the West Torrance vs North Torrance game turns out. North does not look as big as West or the Torrance Tartars, but the line looks like they block well and they can offset their running game with enough passing to keep you honest. The middle linebacker seems to be good at finding the seams in the middle to make tackles for little or no yardage. They have intercepted at least 5 passes so far this season so that should be an interesting challenge for the pass happy Centaurs. I am still picking my Centaurs to win.

Mission Hills defeats Mater Dei

Utah bound Jack Tuttle's 2 touchdown passes paces Mission HIlls in win over Mater Dei

By David A. Willauer-Contributing Writer-Mission Hills High School-San Marcos, CA-9-8-17: After a 41-14 defeat at the hands of Mater Dei High School in Chula Vista, things went the "Grizzlies" way on their home football field of sorts but tonight's game was a National Football Foundation contest in San Diego as a lot of other high school games were played all over the United States of America.

In tonight"s contest the Grizzlies returned the favor as they defeated the Crusaders by a 56-7 score on 2 Jack Tuttle passes (16 completions out of 23 attempts for 144 yards) of 16 and Chris Olave (6 receptions for 112 yards) for 39 yards, Sam Dixon's (4 carries for 18 yards) 2 touchdown runs of 2 and 1 yards each and teammate Damien Wigand's (17 carries for 138 yards) scored 2 touchdown runs of 11 and 6 yards. Backup players Alan Arellano (4 carries for 54 yards) also contributed on a 15 yard touchdown run and Nathan Barraga 1 carry for 3 scored on a 3 yard run.

Mission HIlls qb JackTuttle on his performance vs. Mater Dei: "We won big today I support my teammates they did a great job I am very satisfied that we are 3-0 and hope to be 4-0 next Friday My passing was well today and give my offensive line that did the blocking that is how we won."

Mater Dei scored their only touchdown in the first quarte as Aiden Calvert scored on a 99 yard kickoff return in the first quarter tied the game at 7-7.

One player from each school were named the Most Valuable Player and will be invited to travel to the National Football Foundation Banquet in April of 2018. The Most Valuable Players were from Mater Dei was Aiden Calvert and for Mission HIlls was Damien Wigand

With the win the Grizzlies of Mission Hills will travel to Carlsbad High School next Friday night in a 7:00 pm contest

Division 11, week 2 predictions

Culver City has seized the #1 spot in D-11 this week in both CIFss poll & calpreps.com rankings after their convincing 58-27 victory over West Torrance. The Centaurs face non-directional, just "Torrance" this week, who will be running their wing T misdirection. Torrance (0-1) lost their opener 15-26 to Marina (2-0) of Huntington Beach. They could be a slightly better team than they were last year, but not likely to be good enough to bring down this high flying Culver team. It was 49-14 last year, I expect similar this year.

Arcadia (1-1) has the #2 spot in calpreps ratings & #3 in the CIFss poll. They played way up out of their division losing to D-2 Cathedral 0-49. Perhaps having played Cathedral last week will make Hart seem like a cupcake in comparison. It worked for Downey (1-1) who lost to Santa Margarita before beating Hart last week. But, I don't think Arcadia is at the level of Downey. I expect Arcadia to lose by at least a couple of TD's to an angry Hart squad.

Arroyo (2-0) is #2 in the CIF-SS D-11 poll & #4 in the calpreps rankings. Arroyo has won 2 games against modestly inferior teams, but not blowing out either of them.

St. Genevieve is #3 in the calpreps rankings & #4 in the CIFss poll. Unfortunately for St. Gen, their game against Heritage Christian of Northridge was cancelled last week, probably due to smoke from the fire & heat. They will get a stiffer test this week (than in week 0) from West Ranch (1-0) who beat a struggling Simi Valley (0-2) 55-7 in week 0. But Simi is still more of a team than St. Gen faced in week 0 against Poly of Sun Valley. Looks like both teams missed a game due to heat & fire last week. St. Gen is significantly higher rated than West this week but not sure if those ratings can be trusted. If St. Gen wins by 2 TD's or more, their ratings may be justified, if not, they better watch for Mary Star stealing their playoff spot. I will go out on a limb and pick West to win in a close contest.

Rancho Mirage (2-0) is #5 in both the CIFss poll & calpreps rankings. Rancho faces their toughest game of the regular season against LaQuinta (1-0). LQ easily beat North (0-1) of Riverside last week 35-6. While Rancho may be a tougher opponent than North for LQ, I still expect them to win, perhaps by 2 TD's. Rancho is 1 dimensional. RB Marques Prior will have to carry Rancho. Rancho needs to watch out for bulky TE & DE Gordon Haskell. He is a load & they like to throw to him. Rancho, much like Arroyo, should still cruise into the D-11 playoffs as there is no serious competition for them in the De Anza league.

Westminster (1-0) is #6 in calpreps #7 in the CIF-SS D-11 poll. They face Marina (2-0) of Huntington Beach this week.

Segerstrom (2-0) of Santa Ana is #8 in calpreps & #6 in the CIF-SS D-11 poll. Segerstrom plays in the same 6 team league as Westminster. Segerstrom has pitched 2 straight shut outs winning 39-0 & 38-0, but against lower level opponents.

Hillcrest (1-1) of Riverside is #7 in calpreps & #8 in the CIF-SS D-11 poll. Hillcrest beat Jurupa Hills (1-1) in week 0, 34-15, but fell to the far superior Notre Dame (2-0) of Riverside, 25-49, per calpreps, or 25-36 per Maxpreps, last week.

Lakeside (2-0) of Lake Elsinore is #10 in calpreps.com & #9 in the CIF-SS D-11 poll. Lakeside has stacked their preleague schedule with creampuffs, but that is somewhat understandable as they are playing in a tough 6 team Sunbelt league & project to finish 4th which would require an overall winning record to have any chance for an at-large playoff spot should any be available. They won their first two games 33-0 & 33-7 but this week's opponent, Canyon Springs (1-0) should be somewhat tougher. Unfortunately, the stats show Lakeside as pretty one dimensional, leaning heavily on the capabilities of senior RB Adrian Burt. Lakeside has the better rating, but the 1 dimensional look of Lakeside has me concerned and I will pick Chino to win.

Pacific (2-0) of San Bernardino is ranked 10th in the CIF-SS D-11 poll & 15th in the calpreps.com rankings. Why the disparity you ask? The CIF polls have usually been swayed more by records and scores while calpreps ratings seem to be more influenced by wins and strength of opponent. Pacific won their first 2 in routs of 44-0 & 48-6 but the competition was very weak.

The Ocean League, post week 1, pre-week 2

Pretty happy with the performance of my Culver City Centaurs in week 1 against West Torrance. They won 58-27. CC QB Jonathan Martin was 28 of 37 for 537 yards passing, 5 TD's and no picks. He started the scoring off with a 52 yard keeper, ending up with 103 yards rushing on 7 attempts & 2 TD's.

But it is not a one man show. The receiving corps is nightmarishly good with 3 different receivers having more than 100 yards receiving and one with less than 100, having 3 TD catches. While West would not be confused with a top level program, they are usually not a doormat either. West had beaten CC 6 straight times until this year. They certainly possessed some physicality.

The game was not an immediate runaway either as it was tied 14-14 at one point. It could have stayed even closer if the West receivers had done a better job of catching the ball. There were several drops. I still think West has a shot at a Pioneer League championship this year, particular with Leuzinger looking a little vulnerable.

Culver City moves on to face another Pioneer league opponent, Torrance. Torrance (0-1) lost to Marina 26-15 in week 1. Torrance runs the wing T, but did show they may be able to surprise with a few passes. While their current rating has them lower than their final rating of last year, I think it is possible that they might be a little better. Having said that, Culver City also looks a little better, so I think if Torrance can match the 49-14 loss that they achieved against CC last year, than they will be doing well. Culver is ranked #1 in both the CIFss D-11 poll and the calpreps.com rankings for D-11.

Lawndale (1-0) still looks like the team to beat in the Ocean League. They shutout a challenged St. Bonaventure 35-0, who may be fielding their worst team in some time. Bonny might have a QB problem as the junior was only 10 of 24 for 122 yards, no TD's and 2 interceptions. The QB was also the top runner for Bonny.

Now Lawndale takes on a prior private school upset victim, Crespi (1-1), this week. Crespi beat Sylmar (0-2) 13-0, then fell 41-21 to a very good Aquinas team. Crespi actually led early, 21-7, then the wheels fell off somehow. If Crespi is healthy, perhaps this is close, but I believe Lawndale would have to come in to this game as the favorite against Crespi, for the first time.

El Segundo had a very good opening week with their young team, beating Leuzinger (1-1) 35-18. They were fairly balanced with 166 yards passing & 116 rushing. It looks like senior Danny McEntee did provide leadership, intercepting a pass, defending 4 others and scoring twice. El Segundo intercepted 3 passes.

With only 1 week done, it remains to be seen whether this is El Segundo really good, or Leuzinger really bad. El Segundo faces Oak Park (1-0) next week. That game may not fully answer the question either. Oak Park beat PV Peninsula 21-16 last week. But in week 3, Mira Costa awaits and that will surely be a test for El Segundo.

Hawthorne dismantled a horrible LA City D-3 team, Rivera (0-2) last week, 46-6, and while the rating is significantly better for their next opponent, South Torrance (0-1), than Rivera, I suspect another blowout. It will be a couple of weeks before Hawthorne might see their first challenge against Leuzinger, but even Leuzinger is starting to look suspect.

Santa Monica (0-2) lost 47-8 last week to Cypress, whose rating compares well with the upper half of the Ocean League. That is not a good sign for Samo, however, their next three games possess some hope for Samo to get at least a couple of wins before they have to open against Lawndale in league.

Woeful Beverly Hills (0-2) finally gets to a part of the schedule where they might at least have a little hope to play competitively. They are on the road to Malibu (1-0) this week who was lucky enough to schedule one of the worst rated teams in the Southern Section, Keppel. Malibu should be able to beat Beverly Hills but there is at least a little hope for a competitive game.

Division 11, week 1 results vs projections

Here are my projections for D-11 week 1, followed by the actual results:

#1 Arcadia loses big to highly regarded Div 2 private Cathedral.
- Did not have to be a brilliant clairvoyant to see this coming, but the 49-0 loss has got to feel a little disappointing to Arcadia. A still tough test this coming week against Hart(0-1), but more reasonable than the Cathedral matchup. Problem for Arcadia is that they had trouble defending the pass and Hart is likely to also exploit that.

#2 Arroyo gets another victory this week by just 1 TD over Temple City.
- Arroyo was able to take care of business, winning 27-8 with their defense and run game particularly doing well in the contest. The D held the Temple City QB to 130 yards passing with just 1 TD and 3 interceptions. The Temple City run game was held to just 68 yards rushing on 24 carries. The Arroyo run game was in good hands with senior Steven Ocariz running for 173 yards & 3 TD's on 18 carries. Arroyo Junior QB Ernesto Camacho had his struggles but was still 19 of 31 for 168 yards with no TD's and 1 interception.

#3 St. Genevieve beats #12 Heritage Christian of Northridge by 2 TD's.
- Looks like this game must have been cancelled with all the heat & smoke in the San Fernando Valley from the fire.

#4 Culver City eeks out a win over West Torrance with both teams scoring at least 25 points.
- Culver City was cruising in this 58-27 victory, in the fourth quarter, however it was somewhat tighter earlier in the contest having been tied 14-14 at one point. Culver QB Jonathan Martin threw for 516 yards & 5 TD's while running for 101 more & 2 TD's. He had plenty of assistance from his receiving corps who broke off several long runs from short passes.

#5 Rancho Mirage loses a close contest to Shadow Hills.
- It looks like this one was a close as I thought it would be. Rancho won 20-14. Rancho was a conservatively efficient 6 of 10 passing for 96 yards while running for 203 yards, 127 of those by Marques Prior and his 3 TD's. Shadow Hills leaned on their sophomore QB for 237 yards passing but he was intercepted twice and their run game could only muster 82 yards on 22 carries.

#6 Hillcrest of Riverside loses by 1 TD to Notre Dame of Riverside
- Hillcrest lost by a little more than a TD, the final being 25-49. They face a much more reasonable challenge this week as they host Chino (1-1), a team with a power rating in the same neighborhood as Hillcrest.

#7 Westminster beats Garden Grove by 1 TD
- Westminster beat Garden Grove 21-17, pretty close to my projection. They face a modestly tougher opponent this week in Marina (2-0)

#8 Pasadena, beats Maranatha of Pasadena by 10 points.
- Pasadena lost to Maranatha 21-36. Maranatha's QB went 13 of 22 for 227 yards

#9 Segerstrom has a blow out win against inferior D-13 team Saddleback.
- It was a easy as I projected with Segerstrom winning 38-0. Unfortunately for Segerstrom, they now face a much tougher El Modena (1-0) who are also stepping up in terms of talent the opponent has.

#10 Highland gets a 1 TD win against Thousand Oaks.
- did not realize this game is not until next week!
