Willauer-Contribting Writer-In the first game of The Del Lago Boys Basketball Tournament, the Frogs of Guajome Park High School opened the Boys Basketball Season as they defeated the Firebirds of Pacific Ridge from Carlsbad by a 69-49 Tiburus Ballard led the Frogs with 26 points, Cristian Garrett contributed with 17 points and D'Angelo Simmons with 12. Pacific Ridge was led by Grant Mahler with 10 points.

With the win the Frogs of Guajome Park will take on O Farrell Charter on Tuesday, November 28, 2017

Jeff Tuttle's 2nd half Miracle Magic sparks Mission Hills to CIF Open Division Finals

Willauer-Jack Ashby Field at Grizzly Stadium-Mission Hills High School-San Marcos, CA-11-25-17-In an Open Division Semi Final Round game, after a bunch turnovers things went right for Torrey Pines as they went ahead 10-0 on a blocked punt return of 30 yards by Quinton Smith and on a fumble recovery recovered by the Falcons as they settled for a 38 yard field goal by Justin Kaplan.

In the second half the Grizzlies cut the Falcon lead to 10-7 as Jeff Tuttle 19 completions out of 33 attempts for 197 as threw a 10 yard pass to Chris Olave (9 carries for 91 yards) with the PAT good. Damon Wigand (19 carries for 116 yards) followed with a touchdown as he scored on a 6 yard run put the Grizzlies for their first lead of the game at 14-10.

The Falcons regained the lead at 17-14 as qb Jason Henke 14 carries for 40 yards scored on a 6 yard run with the PAT good

With 1:12 left in the ballgame qb Utah Bound qb Jeff Tuttle known for his passing and scrambling threw a 16 yard pass to Quinton Hadnot to make the final score 20-17 in favor of 12-0 Mission Hills.

Coach Chris Hauser: " Twice we came back and fell behind because of our turnovers,Torrey Pines had made the plays that they did but we battled from 2 scores down to get the lead." "Gives credit to our kids for the fight that they showed after they blocked the punt on us made big play for their first score we had 2 holding penalties which took our initial flame away but that is part of the game"

" On Jack Tuttle's 10 yard pass to Chris Olave for the 10-7 score those two have work so well together and have a tendency to look for each other." "On Jason Henke's 6 yard touchdown for their lead we were patient to drive our offense down the field, on the winning score by Quinton Hadnot from Jack Tuttle we worked on the formation in practice many times it was a good spot to push him vertical on the snap as Jack threw the ball well." "It's a privilege and an honor to play in our 3rd CIF final whoever it is we are ready to play." said Coach Hauser

These 2 teams played during the regular season at Torrey Pines as Mission Hills won by a 24-23 score.

Jack Tuttle on his performance: "It feels good to get the win tonight as we played a good team in Torrey Pines, after trailing 10-0 I felt that we could win the game tonight as things always happen." On the 2 touchdown passes of 10 yards to Chris Olave and to 16 yard to Quinton Hadnot they were fantastic plays for us but give credit to our offensive line as they did a good job blocking that's how we won the ballgame."


The Grizzlies of Mission Hills will be appearing in their 3rd trip to the CIF Open Division Finals(2nd Open Division Final). In 2013 Mission Hills defeated Oceanside 36-14 for the Open Division Finals, lost to Eastlake in 2012 by a score of 21-14 in the Division I Finals.

The Covina Colts (10-2) hosted the Westminster Lions (9-3) at the beautiful Covina District Field facility. The Colts broke out on top and held a 28-0 lead until there were just 3 minutes left in the second quarter. The Lions had a serious hole to dig out of but started with a 14 yard TD pass at about 3 minutes before the half. The Lions pooch kicked and were able to recover the ball at the Covina 27 yard line. With about a minute left before the half, the Lions connected on a 14 yard TD pass to Joel Navarro to close the gap to 28-14 at the half.

With about 7 minutes left in the third quarter, the Lions crept even closer after a 5 yard TD run to make just 28-21 in favor of Covina. The score remained knotted there at 28-21 after 3 quarters. But with 11 minutes to play in the game Covina's QB Nin Burns was able to complete a 7 yard TD pass for a 35-21 lead.

The Colts kick left the Lions starting from their own 39. They were able to methodically move down the field and score on a 7 yard rushing TD with about 7 minutes left to play, closing to within 35-28. The Lions kicked off but did not use their pooch kick and the Colts ended up with the ball in the Lions territory at the Lion 46. With about 5 minutes left to play QB Burns II was able to complete a 40 yard pass play for a TD and a lead of 42-28.

The Lions got another chance to tighten the game but Covina's Anthony Ramirez intercepted a Lion pass and Covina had the ball on the Lion's 35 yard line with about 4 minutes left. The Colts were able to move to as close as the Lion's 17 yard line with about 3 minutes left. Then the Lions got another break on an interception by Lion Jose Diaz. But the Lions gave the gift back almost immediately when they fumbled and the Colts recovered at the Lion 45. Covina was able to control the ball and the clock in the final minutes before taking a knee in victory formation at the Lion's 5 yard line.

The Lions were a big bruising team but seemed to lack the speed to stay with the Colts. The Colts are led by a triumvirate of talented sophomores including QB Nin Burns II who was an incredible 24 of 27 for 309 yards & 3 TD's, with 2 interceptions. Burns also led the Colts ground game with 131 yards on 10 carries. Sophomore RB Erik Cuellar contributed another 71 yards on 17 carries as they amassed 215 yards on the ground.

The Colts got some senior help in the receiving corps with 10 catches for 114 yards from Tristan Sprague. Super speedy sophomore receiver Danny Urrea contributed 9 catches for 107 yards and was also a dangerous kick returner despite his roster size listing him at 5'4". Senior linebacker Ailaoa Tauvao was also very active for the Colts, intercepting a pass and leading the Colt defense in tackles.

The Rancho Mirage Rattlers (9-3) hosted the Arroyo Knights (11-1) of El Monte. The Rattlers were able to break out on top with a rushing TD & a fumble returned for a TD in the first quarter. With about 3 minutes left in the second quarter, Arroyo was able to post their first score with a 5 yard TD run by Daniel Mendoza. Arroyo kicked the ball to the Rattlers and Rancho had to start at their own 8 yard line and could not get much going. So they had to punt and Arroyo got the ball back at the Rattler 41 yard line with about 2 minutes left in the half. Arroyo junior QB Ernesto Camacho connected on a 25yd TD to Daniel Mendoza with under a minute left in the half and the two teams went into their respective locker rooms tied 14-14 at the half.

After a set of unsuccessful possessions for both teams to start the second half, the Rattlers, after stopping Arroyo on downs, took over at their own 30 at about the 8 minute mark of the third quarter. The Rattlers moved within the Arroyo 20 with about 4 minutes left in the third and they scored on a rushing TD with about 2 minutes left in the third quarter. The Rattlers managed to get inside the Arroyo 20 again with about 9 minutes left in the game, but missed a field goal.

Arroyo took the ball down the field and QB Camacho scored on a 1yd rushing TD with about 6 minutes left in the game. A good PAT tied it at 21-21. Neither team could score and the game went to overtime.

In Overtime, Rancho Mirage was able to score on a rushing TD but missed their extra point. It didn't matter as Arroyo was unable to score on their possession and the Rattlers advanced to the semi-finals in a 27-21 overtime victory. The Rattlers must face more Knights again as they will travel to Anaheim to face the Knights of Katella High (11-1)

The Katella Knights were on the road to face the Arcadia Apaches (8-4) in the Division 11 quarterfinals. This was another exciting game in Division 11, but I will just let you know that Arcadia led 35-14 with 9 minutes left in the third quarter before Katella came roaring back behind their QB Nathan Arrington and won in overtime, 41-35. It will be the passing of Katella vs the running of Rancho Mirage in this Division 11 CIFss semi-final in Anaheim.

I was very concerned for the Culver City Centaurs (11-1) coming into their Division 11 quarterfinal game against the Coachella Valley Arabs (9-3). The Centaurs were banged up and had to travel to Thermal to take on the surging Arabs. CV had now won 8 straight games including a 45-7 opening round victory over Ramona. The Centaurs were facing the very talented senior QB Armando Deniz who is 13th in the entire state of California in passing yards per game, 2 spots ahead of the Centaurs star QB Jonathon Martin.

But in this contest, Martin did not even uncork the most spectacular throw of the game. That went to his slotback Kevin McGuire who uncorked a deep pass to the speedy Tyler Luckett that was right, stride for stride, on the money and resulted in an 86 yard TD allowing the Centaurs to jump out to a 14-0 lead.

But the Arabs would keep fighting their way back into the contest all night. Deniz gave it his all for the Arabs, completing 33 of 47 passes for 398 yards and 3 TD's. However the Centaurs were able to intercept him twice. One interception, by Tyler Luckett, stopped the Arabs in Centaur territory when the Arabs were down to a 4th & 8. The Centaur defense also came up with a coverage sack on 4th & 7 in Centaur territory that stalled another Arab threat. The Centaur D was also able to slow down any Arab ground game as QB Deniz and RB Angelo Fitzgerald combined for only 85 yards on 32 rushing attempts.

So the Centaurs broke out on to 14-0, but the Arabs came back to make it 14-7 with about 3 minutes still left in the first quarter. This contest had the makings for lighting up the scoreboard like fireworks. The other Centaur interception gave Culver the ball on the Arab 33 in the second quarter and it looks like they went to senior RB Brandon Oum, who took it 33 yards after a nice kickout block by whom I would have to presume was junior guard Jose Lopez.

The Arabs had a great chance to close the gap when they intercepted a Centaur pass and were inside the Centaur 20, but they ended up turning the ball over on downs and it was 21-7 at the half. The Arabs got possession to start the second half and were able to get down the field and score a TD with about 8 minutes to go in the third to pull with 21-14. The Arabs threatened again inside the Centaur 20 yard line with about 6 minutes left in the third but were unable to come away with a score. The Centaurs got the ball back and were able to score a rushing TD with still around the 6 minutes to go in the third quarter and they now had a 28-14 lead.

The Arabs had to punt on their next possession and the Centaurs ended up with the ball on the Arab 49. With about 5 minutes left in the third, they were able to score on a pass play to take a substantial 35-14 lead. After the Centaur kick off, the Arabs were able to move the ball into Centaur territory and QB Deniz was able to connect with Fitzgerald on a 5 yard pass play for a TD. The PAT was missed but the Arabs had closed the gap to 35-20 with about 3 minutes left in the third.

After the Arab kickoff to the Centaurs, CV got a break when the Centaurs fumbled at their own 40 yard line and the Arabs recovered. QB Deniz was able to capitalize, finishing the score off with a 10 yard TD pass that pulled the Arabs to within 35-27 early in the 4th quarter.

But the Centaurs came back with another TD pass with about 8 minutes left in the game to take a 42-27 lead. The Centaur D was able to keep the Arabs at bay on their next possession and they ended up punting to the Centaurs who got the ball back at their own 40 with about 6 minutes left. The Centaurs were able to chew up the remaining clock and finish the scoring off with a field goal with less than a minute left for the final score of 45-27.

The unsung heroes for the Centaurs have to be the defense led by Cortez Wright's 6 tackles for losses, the offensive line and the unsung exploits of Centaur RB Oum. Often an after thought in the Centaurs high powered air raid offense, Oum was called upon to carry his heaviest load of the season and responded with 20 carries for 199 yards and 2 TD's, along with 2 receptions for 40 yards and another TD.

The Centaurs move on to the semi-finals to take on the Covina Colts (10-2). A very slick executing team led by three super sophomores, QB,CB Nin Burns II, RB Erik Cuellar and the tiny but speedy & illusive WR,CB Danny Urrea.

The Ocean League champion Lawndale Cardinals(11-1) were cruising along in the Div 5 playoffs basking in the glow of their 41-21 first round victory over Los Osos (5-6), perhaps presuming they would be heading to a D-5 finals showdown against Paraclete. But they had a couple of distractions before they could get there including a quarterfinal match at their home against the Moorpark Musketeers (10-2).

The Musketeers were big and physical enough to challenge the Cardinals and they held back the Lawndale offense for the first three quarters with only a 56 yard interception return for a TD by the Cardinals to help keep them in the game. The game was knotted at 7 each after a quarter but the Musketeer D was able to get a very important 2 point safety in the second quarter and led at halftime 9-7. The Moorpark D was still a dominating force in the third quarter that Lawndale could not solve. Meanwhile the Moorpark offense was able to add a rushing TD with about 3 minutes left in the third and take a 15-7 lead that held up to the end of the quarter.

With about 9 minutes left in the contest, the Musketeers completed a 10 yd pass for a TD and a safer 22-7 lead with about 9 minutes left in the contest. The Lawndale offense finally responded to the urgency and were able to score on a 1yd TD run by Cardinal QB Jalen Hamler, closing the gap to 22-14 with about 8 minutes left in the game.

Lawndale looked like they had a good opportunity with about 6 minutes left when they got the ball on the Moorpark 38 yard line after a Musketeer punt. But Moorpark was able to intercept the Cardinals at the Musketeer 9 yard line. The Musketeers struggled to dig themselves out from deep in their own side of the field when the Cardinals made another opportunity with an interception of Moorpark at the Musketeer 42 yard line with about 3 minutes left.

Cardinal QB Hamler was able to score on a 5 yard rushing TD with about 2 minutes left. The Cardinals went for 2 and the tie, but the conversion attempt failed. The Musketeers were able to get the ball and move down to about the Cardinal 14 before turning it over on downs with less than a minute to go. Lawndale could not pull off the miracle finish and Moorpark won 22-20 and advance to play at Paramount (11-1).

Willauer-Contributing Writer-Jack Ashby Field at Grizzly Field-Mission Hills High School-San Marcos, CA-11-17-17-After a 49-48 win over the Foothillers of Grossmont High School in last years CIF quarter final round down in El Cajon, the miracle Grizzlies of Mission Hills pulled a rabbit out of the hat but on the key plays on the passing of Jeff Tuttle as the Utah bound qb had 17 completions out of 35 attempts for 328 yards along with 4 touchdown passes of 82 and 8 to Chris Olave 7 receptions for 193 (scored on a 60 yard punt return), 1 pass of 7 yards to Chris Jones 4 receptions for 93 yards and running of Damon Wigand carried the ball 17 times for 66 yards as he contributed as he ran 5 yards for a touchdown, Isaac Anderson scored on a 1 yard run, on the defensive side Chris Calhoun scored on a 10 yard interception for a score as they defeated the Grossmont Football (7-4) by a 52-42 score.

For the Foothillers of Grossmont High School Shevill Sterling carried the ball 24 times for 172 yards and surprises on defense, So Jamie Odom 12 completions out of 36 attempts for 121 yards threw 2 touchdown passes of 8 yards to teammate Josh Moala (4 receptions for 22 yard) plus off Grizzly turnovers, Erik Shanks scored on a 34 yard interception and a 32 yard fumble return by Julien Sanderlin and a Chris Callahan 10 yard interception.

I expected to win tonight as we watched the films on Mission Hills in last years quarterfinal loss at our school as you saw the score tonight our defense played lights out football as we battled the number one team in the county for 2 years in a row I couldn't be prouder of these kids for their performance on the field tonight." said Tom Carlo Head Football Coach at Grossmont.

"For these kids there were sad faces but as the head coach I couldn't be prouder of what they did." "My running back Sheveil Sterling played like a warrior as our offensive line played well for him these kids care about each other." The Grizzles of Mission Hills outgained the Foothillers of Grossmont on total offensive yards 427 to 401 yards

The Grizzlies next opponent will be a familiar opponent they played during the season as they will play the Falcons of Torrey Pines a 40-0 winner over the Mavericks of LaCosta Canyon. Mission Hills will host Torrey Pines next Friday night kickoff is at 7:00 pm

The Westminster Lions (9-2) hosted the St. Genevieve Valiants (7-3) of Panorama City last weekend and the Lions were able to stay on top for the win by a score of 42-20. The Lions broke out first, scoring twice in the first quarter but the Valiants kept trying to fight their way back into the game, scoring once in the first quarter. But the Lions were able to put another TD up in the 2cnd quarter to take a 22-6 lead. The Valiants closed the gap again with a TD before halftime to close within 22-12, but the Lions put up two more TD's in the third quarter and the Valiants were unable to keep pace.

The Lions senior QB Noah Melbon had a solid game going 10 of 13 passing for 178 yards and 2 TD's. The Lions junior RB Christian Jaime helped keep the game under control of the Lions with 154 rushing yards on 24 carries, with 4 TD's. The Valiants senior QB Anthony Smets had his moments, including throwing a TD pass to sophomore Bryce Smets. But ultimately, the Lions were able to put enough control over the Valiants to come out on top. Westminster moves on to face the Covina Colts (9-2).

Covina faced the Victor Valley Jackrabbits (5-6) in round one and came out victorious by a score of 21-7. The Jackrabbits broke out on top scoring first, in the first quarter. But the Colts responded with about 5 minutes left in the first on a 5 yard TD pass. Turnovers were helping the Jackrabbits keep the game close as they had both a fumble recovery and an interception in the first quarter but were not able to turn either of those into points. Covina intercepted a pass in the second quarter at the Jackrabbit 40 and were able to move the ball down to Victor Valley's 15 yard line. But the drive stalled and a field goal attempt was missed with about 6 minutes left before the half. With about 2 minutes to go in the first half, Victor Valley had to punt and the Colts' Danny Urrea was able take it back 70 yards for a TD and the 14-7 lead.

In the third quarter the Jackrabbits intercepted another Colts pass but were unable to capitalize on it. With about 4 minutes to go in the third, the Jackrabbits were forced to punt again and Covina took posession at their own 31 yard line. The Colts were able to move down the field and ultimately score on a 17 yard run by Erik Cuellar. Cuellar kicked the PAT for the Colts 21-7 lead. After an exchange of unsuccessful posessions, the Jackrabbits started at their own 6 yard line with 10 minutes to go in the 4th quarter. They managed to drive down to the Colts 34 yard line with 4 minutes to play but the Colts intercepted a Jackrabbit pass and were able to run the clock down to less than a minute with the help of a long Erik Cuellar run. Covina punted and the Jackrabbits had to try to start from their own 1 yard line but got almost nowhere. Covina and Westminster will have a Thursday night game in Covina:

The Arcadia Apaches (8-3), hosted the Hillcrest Trojans and were very lucky to escape with a 21-20 victory. Hillcrest had broken out to a 17-0 lead at the half. Arcadia came back in the third quarter with two TD's. The Trojans were unable to push the ball into the endzone in a 4th quarter drive but got a FG for a 20-14 lead. The Trojan defense had actually provided the key stop with about 2 minutes to play that turned the ball over to the Trojans on downs in Trojan territory. But on a gain of almost 10 yards on 1st down for the Trojans, they fumbled the ball back to the Apaches.

The Trojan defense was called upon again to stop the Apaches who got to start at the Trojan 37. The Apaches got closer to the Trojan endzone but were down to a 4th & 13 from about the Apache 18. Apache QB Maximillian Davila took the snap and was facing some pressure, but he moved around in the pocket although he looked like he was gonna get sacked when he zipped the ball into the endzone to Frankie Contreras for the TD to tie. The PAT was good with just 56 seconds left in the contest. The Trojans got the ball at their own 27 but were unable to move it downfield enough and Frankie Contreras broke up the 4th down desperation heave by the Trojan QB. The Katella Knights opened the playoffs at home against the Crean Lutheran (6-5) Saints of Irvine. The Knights rolled out to 28-0 lead with 6 minutes still left in the second quarter. The Saints chipped away at the lead with one TD before the half, and another with 4 minutes left in the third quarter. Then they recovered a fumble and ran it back 35 yards for a TD in the 4th quarter to close within 7 points at 28-21. However Katella was able to come up with another TD to put the game away with a final score of 35-21. Ultimately, Katella was better on offense and defense, holding the Saints to 214 yards combined rushing & passing while racking up 426 themselves with 259 coming in the run game.

They had a real barnburner in the Rancho Mirage Rattlers (8-3) 41-39 last minute victory over the Jurupa Hills Spartans(6-5) of Fontana. Will try to add detail tomorrow.

The Culver City Centaurs (10-1) hosted the Heritage Christian Warriors (8-2), of the Olympic League. While the Centaurs were not as dynamic as they had been over the most of the season, the offense and defense did the necessary things to minimize the impact from the Warriors run game. Nasir Marshall had a couple of big break away runs for the Warriors and FB David Rozo had some success pounding the ball, but the Centaur defense made enough stops and Warrior passing game was not able to come up with enough impact to influence the game in favor of the Warriors.

The Centaurs had 343 yards combined, almost equally, running & passing, while the wing-T Warriors concentrated on their run game for 247 yards, but only 44 passing. After getting favorable field position on the Warrior 33 yard line on the Centaurs first play from scrimmage, Alexander Smith took a jet sweep 33 yards for a TD. To close out the scoring, late in the 4th quarter, the Centaurs threw a 70 yard TD pass to Jamal Glaspie.

Next week will be extremely different and extremely difficult for the Centaurs as they will have to travel all the way to Thermal to play the Coachella Valley Arabs (9-2), who beat the Ramona Rams (6-5), 45-7 last Friday. The Arabs feature star senior QB Armando Deniz who was 15 of 27 for 224 yards passing & 1 TD pass along with another 104 yards rushing on 9 carries with another TD. Deniz usually carries the load for the Arabs but he also got help from junior RB Angelo Fitzgerald who stunned Ramona with 226 yards on 25 carries. There is also a senior Fitzgerald on the Arabs squad along with a freshman. But the Centaurs are sure to try minimize the effect of Deniz who has 218 completions in 359 attempts, for 2,879 yards with 22 TD passes on the season.

In other Ocean League playoff action, the Ocean League Champion Lawndale Cardinals (11-0), defeated the Los Osos Grizzlies (5-6) of the tough Baseline League, by a score of 41-21. See the write up in the Daily Breeze Preps:

But things get more serious this week as Lawndale will take on the Moorpark Musketeers (9-2). Moorpark shut out Los Altos (7-4) last week, 42-0. The Musketeers have not scored less than 21, even when they have lost. The Cardinals have not given up more than 26 points in any one game. The Musketeers have faced teams as good as Lawndale but have not beaten them. It looks like Moorpark executes well but I doubt they can size up against Lawndale. Calpreps projects it as a 27-26 Moorpark win but I think I will go the other way, maybe 28-21 in favor of big physical Lawndale.

The Ocean League's El Segundo Eagles (8-3) lost to the El Modena Vanguards (9-2), the #2 seed in the Division 7 playoffs, by a score of 38-22. The Eagles did not go down without a fight. Read the Daily Breeze Preps article for details:

Californiapreps staff writer Jack Nelson took in a Mater Dei practice recently and came away impressed with the mixture of veterans and newcomers.

His early projected starting five include seniors Spencer Freedman, Bol Bol, Micheal Wang, and Reagan Lundeen, along with newcomer junior PJ Fuller.

But a top assistant Mater Dei coach calls this possibly the most deep Monarch team ever. It includes some intriguing freshmen: 6-3 guard Devin Askew, 6-9 F Wilhelm Breidenbach, and 6-8 F Harrison Hornery.

Then there's returning veteran senior Harrison Butler and soph Aidan Prukop who should get a lot of playing time, along with 6-7 soph guard Logan Cremonesi.

The team possesses a lot of talent but the players showed an impressive ability to share the ball and show some great passing skills.

The Culver City Centaurs (9-1, 4-1) had an easy victory over the hapless Beverly Hills Normans (0-10). That makes 3 straight shutouts against the lower half of the Ocean League. 4 total for the season. I did not realize the Centaurs would be eligible for the playoff seeding since they were finishing second in league but apparently you can be seeded. First round home games are affected by where you finish relative to the rest of the playoff teams, but fortunately, second in the Ocean League with a good rating was good enough to secure a home game as well. There are seeded teams that have away games to opening round of the playoffs due to where they finished in league.

The Centaurs will be at home against the Heritage Christian Warriors (8-1, 2-1). The Warriors suffered their first defeat of the year 16-47, but not unexpectedly, against the Valley Christian (8-2, 3-0) Crusaders, the #5 ranked team in Division 8 according to the latest CIFss poll.

Calpreps projects a 48-17 victory for Culver City over the Warriors, but the good news for the Warriors is that the Centaurs are pretty banged up from injuries and might find it hard to play at the level that Valley Christian did against the Warriors. Expect a closer game than the projection. For more details, particularly on the Warriors, you might wanna read Ben Roger's posts on scout as he has seen the Warriors twice and the Centaurs once.

It was no surprise at all that the Arroyo Knights (10-0) were selected as the #2 seed in Division 11. When challenged this season, they have responded successfully. Arroyo had a bye for week 10. They were the Division 12 champions last season.

They pass almost as much as they run and they are led by junior QB Ernesto Camacho. He has thrown for 2,380 yards and 23 TD with only 4 interceptions. The running is spearheaded by senior Steven Ocariz who has gained 711 yards with 11 TD's. He is averaging 6.6 yards a carry.

Arroyo will open at home against the Lakeside Lancers (7-3, 2-3), of Lake Elsinore. Lakeside finished in a 3 way tie for third place after their 28-14 victory last week against Perris (0-10). The Sunbelt League has a couple of monster teams in it: Heritage (9-1) #2 in Div.2, and Paloma Valley (8-2) #6 in D-5. The strength of the league and Lakeside's favorable selection from their league probably helped get them into the playoffs. Arroyo is good, but I doubt Lakeside will be intimidated after what they have seen in Sunbelt League play.

Lakeside passes with modest success, about 25% of the time, but most of the time they rely on senior running back Adrian Burt. He was a workhorse last week against Perris as Lakeside played a freshman at QB and only threw the ball 4 times for 8 yards. It did not matter though as Burt carried 36 times for 295 yards and 3 TD's. Lakeside has made a switch at QB over the 2 last games but it is unclear to me whether it was due to performance or injury. Safe to say Lakeside will try to ride their horse, Adrian Burt, as far as he will take them in the playoffs. Burt has 1,626 yards rushing in 8 games of play. Yes, that is just over 200 yards a game, when he plays. He has scored 20 TD's on the ground. I am sure Arroyo will be keying on Burt.

The #3 seed went to the Arcadia Apaches (7-3, 6-1), but they will be on the road against the Hillcrest Trojans (7-3, 3-2) of the River Valley League. The Trojans finished in a crazy 5 way tie for first place in league after their 49-41 victory over the Norte Vista Braves (3-7, 3-2).

Hillcrest junior QB J. L. Jefferson was impressive going 27 of 40 for 490 yards against the Braves with 4 TD's. Senior receiver Elijah Dominguez was a superstar with 11 receptions for 253 yards and 3 TD's, but he got some help from sophomore receiver Isaac Perez who had 10 catches for 133 yards and a TD. Their running game may have been stunted some by the absence of senior RB Cordell Labrie. The team only ran the ball 16 times for 62 yards but had 3 rushing TD's.

Arcadia should beware of the QB keeper by Jefferson when the Trojans get in the red zone. Labrie has run for 961 yards & 11 TD's this season in 8 games. I don't know if he is out for the playoff's. They would run some wildcat offense with Labrie as well and he would sometimes throw out of the wildcat formation. Jefferson has thrown for 1,565 yards in 9 games with 14 TD's but 7 interceptions. Dominguez has 911 yards receiving in 9 games.

Arcadia probably impressed the selection committee with their week ten 22-16 victory over the highly regarded Crescenta Valley Falcons (8-2, 5-2). The win helped them get to second place in the Pacific League. The Apaches had to come from behind to win in the 4th quarter.

Senior RB Alex Guerra saved his most impressive game of the season for the right time, gaining 172 yards against the Falcons. Senior QB Maximillion Davila had a solid game but his stats for the season are more impressive, having thrown for 1,447 and 17 TD's with just 2 interceptions.

The Arcadia secondary appears to be pretty solid but they will be heavily tested by Dominguez and Perez. Calpreps projects this as a 28-19 victory for Arcadia, but I think this could be higher scoring and has upset potential.

The 4th seeded team is the Covina Colts (8-2, 4-1). They were able to defeat the Rowland Raiders (5-5, 2-3), of Rowland Heights in week 10 by a score of 28-17. Covina finished in a 3 way tie for first in the Valle Vista League.

Rowland led 14-7 at the half and was up 17-7 with 1 minute left in the third when Covina finally scored on a 45yd pass completion from QB Nin Burns II to Tristan Sprague. Then with just under a minute left in the third, Colt RB Erik Cuellar ripped off a 90yd TD run & a 21-17 lead. The Colts added an insurance rushing TD with just 4 minutes left in the contest.

Covina will be facing the Victor Valley Jackrabbits (5-5, 3-1) of the Desert Sky League. Victor Valley was able to squeeze by Barstow (2-8, 2-2) last Friday by a score of 21-20. The maxpreps statpages are not being cooperative at this hour so we will withold from further update for now.

Mission Hills 2017-2018 Overview

22-9 in 2016-17 Lost in 2nd round of State Div. 2 playoffs.

Mission Hills boys basketball returns Warren Washington as a first team all Avocado East selection, as well as a 2nd team all CIF performer. He is signing Wednesday with Oregon State. Chris Olave was a solid double digit scorer for the Grizzlies a year ago, and comes off the gridiron as one of the top players in the county in Football as well.

6 lettermen return in all, including: Tanner Stanich who heads a solid cast of role players, speedy Shawn Peters, Trevor Davis (4 year starter in baseball), and Jackson Israel (perhaps our most explosive 3 point threat).

"Ours is one of the best leagues in the county, with Vista and San Marcos returning nearly everyone, and El Camino should be improved as well. It will be a fun challenge competing at that level every night. We need to be disciplined, defend with toughness, and shoot it well to be in the hunt for the league crown."

The Culver City Centaurs (9-1, 4-1) had a nice easy victory over the hapless Beverly Hills Normans (0-10), by a score of 49-0. I thought the Normans executed better than Santa Monica or Hawthorne did against the Centaurs, but the Normans could not throw the ball effectively and their defense was not up to the task of stopping the Centaur attack.

The Centaurs finished second in the Ocean League but apparently, for playoff seeding, league finish is not a factor. The Centaurs got the #1 seed in Division 11 and have drawn a first round home game against the Heritage Christian Warriors (8-1) of the Olympic League. The Warriors are a run first team, but have executed occasional passes for substantial gains when the defenses try to lock down the run box too much. #75 Cory Schauer seems to be a solid defensive end frequently providing pressure on opponent's QB's. His effectiveness will need to be minimized. It looks like the Centaur speed could be a difficult factor for the Warriors to handle. The Centaurs are pretty banged up right now and that could make this game a lot more challenging for Culver City. It will likely be closer than the calpreps.com projection of a 48-17 Centaur victory.

The Lawndale Cardinals (10-0) secured first place in the Ocean League with the blistering 76-6 win over the Hawthorne Cougars (5-5, 1-4). It looks like Lawndale received the #3 seed in the Division 5 playoffs and will open at home against the Los Osos Grizzlies (5-5, 2-3) of the tough Baseline League. Los Osos is a run first team that has been able to throw with some success as well. They are led by senior RB Kyle Jorgensen who has amassed 1,395 yards in 10 games, gaining over 100 yards in 8 of them. Senior QB Brett Cabral tries to keep Grizzly opponents honest with his 879 passing yards and 8 TD's. Lawndale is projected to win 42-19. If Lawndale RB junior Jordan Wilmore is healthy he might make the difference, as he has 1,520 rushing yards in just 7 games.

The El Segundo Eagles (8-2, 3-2) locked up the last playoff eligible position in the Ocean League by finishing alone in third place after beating the Santa Monica Vikings (3-7, 2-3) by a score of 40-6. Their reward is to take to the road this week and go to the #2 seeded team in Division 7, the El Modena Vanguards (8-2), champions of the North Hills League. El Modena will run about 60% of the time while passing about 40%, but senior QB A.J. Esperanza leads the way with 1,665 yards passing and 23 TD's while also running for another 651 yards. His biggest running mate is senior RB Andrew Carvajal, who has chipped in another 809 yards and 11 TD's. Calpreps says the Vanguards should come out on top 31-20.

Hawthorne, Santa Monica and Beverly Hills were unable to garner a playoff spot.

So I did a real quick run down of Division 7, just to make sure the Ocean League's El Segundo Eagles (7-2, 2-2) were going to make the playoffs. They are lock to win their final game and be the playoff eligible third place team from the Ocean League. Just using the calpreps ratings & projections, I believe they will safely make the playoffs, but will be on the road for the first round. Now there are a LOT of close games in this last week for Division 7 participating teams so a LOT could change, but for the heck of it, since I did this much(or little) research, hear is my WAG bracket for D-7:

One possible change I could see is perhaps swapping Don Lugo and El Segundo. The El Segundo vs. North Torrance contest would be much closer geographically. The Division projects to have 8 league champions with 4 from second place and 4 from eligible third place finishes.

I am listing 3 at-large teams that at least one of them could make the playoffs if something does not go as projected in week 10. I know of at least 1 team projecting to finish first in league, but if they lose, they will fall completely out of any eligible playoff spot.

The 3 that might want to file at-large entry paperwork are:
Warren (5-4, 1-3) from Downey, of the San Gabriel Valley League
Tustin (7-2, 2-2) of the Empire League
Canyon (4-5, 0-2) from Anaheim, of the Crestview League

I know we still have week 10 games to play, so there is definitely room for this bracket to change substantially, and I did not do all the math but relied heavily on the calpreps power rankings.

But if I read the selection rules properly, teams finishing first in league will get first shot at being seeded and I only foresee 4 teams in Division 11 finishing first in their leagues.

They are:
the Arroyo Knights (10-0) of El Monte from the Mission Valley League,
the Covina Colts (7-2, 3-1) from the Valle Vista League,
the Katella Knights (8-1, 4-0) of Anaheim from the Orange League, and
the Coachella Valley Arabs (7-2, 4-0), of Thermal, from the De Anza League.

After that, I simply took the calpreps power rankings plus the projected finishes of teams after week 10 games and came up with this:

The Arcadia vs Covina match-up might seem odd to some in the first round since they are the #3 & #4 teams in the current CIFss D-11 poll, but because Arcadia is projecting to fall into third place, they may just be one of two lucky 3rd place teams to even make the playoffs.

The playoffs may consist of 4 first place teams, 10 2nd place teams and 2 third place teams with possibly two more eligible third place teams being left out of the playoffs and no room for at large entrants.

Another variable will be how teams pick playoff placement for teams that finished tied in second place in league. League policies could definitely change who is in or out of the playoffs. I made the assumption that teams that tied for 2nd in their leagues would somehow get that designation as a 2nd place team.

Anyhoo, this all gets answered with finality from the CIFss office, I believe, this coming Sunday. Until then, enjoy speculating or telling me how I am wrong.

Utah bound Jack Tuttle 5 passes paces Mission Hills in Discovery Bowl win over rival San Marcos

Willauer-Contributing Writer-Jack Ashley Field at Grizzle Stadium-San Marcos, CA-Friday, November 3, 2017: After a 14-10 win on the Knights Field at San Marcos High School things went the Grizzles way on their home field as the Discovery Bowl Most Valuable Player and University of Utah bound Jeff Tuttle known for his scrambling and touchdown passes tonight threw for 17 completions out of 33 attempts for 322 yards threw 2 touchdown passes of 50 and 38 yards to wide receiver Chris Olave (6 receptions for 150 yards) 2 to Maurice Jones of 18 and 23 yards (3 receptions for 55 yards) and 1 touchdown pass to Quinton Hadnot for 48 yards (4 reception for 78 yards) defeated their rival the San Marcos Knights by a 49-27 score to claim the 2017 Discovery Bowl Trophy.

On the 5 passes my touchdown passes were great as I give credit to my offensive line and receivers I am delivering the ball on MVP I dont pay attention who does what we i love my team this is what I have to focus on we have to take things one day at a time then we find out who we play

For the Myles Hastings 17 completions out of 30 attempts for 310 yards threw 3 touchdown passes of 11 and 70 yards to Discovery Bowl MVP Kyle Webb along with a 62 yarder to Kyle Phillips. San Diego State bound Josh Bornes led the Knights in rushing as he carries the ball 11 times for 56 yards

The Grizzles reclaim the 2017 Discovery Bowl Trophy and lead the series 12 wins to 2 losses. The MVP's went from each school for San Marcos goes to Kyle Webb and for Mission Hills is Jeff Tuttle. Details on the upcoming CIF Sections playoff will be decided tomorrow.

The #1 ranked Culver City Centaurs (8-1, 3-1) easily took care of business against the Santa Monica Vikings (3-6, 2-2) last week and are all but locked in as a second place Ocean League, Division 11 playoff eligible team. They have only the Beverly Hills Normans (0-9) to face next week and they should get the W even if they are experiencing the injury bug a bit.

#2 The Arroyo Knights (10-0) cruised to a 45-14 victory over the Mountain View Vikings (4-5, 1-4) of El Monte. Mountain View actually led after the first quarter but Arroyo turned it around after that, scoring 3 TD's in the 2cnd quarter & 2 more in the third. Arroyo will have the week off to recuperate and get ready for a more modest first round opponent, as I assume they should garner the #1 or #2 seed in the division for the playoffs.

#3 The Arcadia Apaches (6-3, 5-1) took care of necessary business in beating the Pasadena Bulldogs (2-7, 2-4) by a score of 39-13. It was the last possible threat to achieving a playoff eligible spot in the Pacific League. But there is still something to play for this week. Currently the Apaches are tied for second with the Crescenta Valley Falcons (8-1, 5-1) and that will be their opponent to close out the regular season this week. The winner will surely be guaranteed a playoff spot in their respective divisions, while the loser will have to wait and see how many third place eligible teams qualify for their respective divisions. If Arcadia wins they will also make a statement toward getting a top 4 seeding in the division 11 playoffs, that is, if a 2nd place finishing team is allowed to get a top 4 seeding. It won't be easy, the Falcons had been projected as league favorites until they were upset by Burbank (7-2, 6-0). Calpreps has the Falcons as 10 point favorites over the Apaches in a 31-21 Falcon win. All three of the top 3 D-11 teams had excellent performances from their QB's.

#4 is the Westminster Lions (7-2, 3-1) according to calpreps.com. They had a very crucial 21-7 victory over the Segerstom Jaguars (6-3, 2-2) last week. Segerstrom is another division 11 team and have all the same motivation and perhaps even a little more because this week, Westminster has it easy, playing league doormat the Loara Saxons (2-7, 0-4). A Westminster win should leave them in sole posession of 2nd place in the 6 team Golden West League and a locked in eligible playoff spot in Division 11. Segerstrom, on the other hand, is likely to get left just on the outside of the playoffs even if they beat the Santa Ana Saints (8-1, 4-0). They might have to hope for an unlikely third place eligibility or an at-large entry. Calpreps projects a Saints 21-17 victory over Segerstrom while Westminster is projected to win 49-7 over Loara.

#4 according to the CIFss poll are the Covina Colts (7-2, 3-1). Covina beat the Wilson Wildcats (2-7, 1-3) 28-9. Despite all their hard work, Covina finds themselves in a 3 way tie for first place in the Valle Vista League going into the last week of the regular season. The other two first place teams project to have easier last games than Covina. But fortunately, even Covina's opponent the Rowland Raiders (5-4, 2-2) are supposed to be a substantial tier below the top three in league. The Rowland passing game has had some success but with a higher than desirable turnover ratio and they tend to lean on the running game a little more with junior Nire Robinson being the lead runner with 98 carries for 623 yards and he also gets help from senior RB Eric Burton who has carried 39 times for 379 yards and 6 TD's. Calpreps projects it as a 48-14 Covina victory.

#6 everyone agrees is the Katella Knights (8-1, 4-0). They easily dispensed with the Magnolia Sentinels (1-8, 1-3) with a 35-0 victory. Katella will face the currently second place Savanna Rebels (6-3, 3-1). The records say it should be a competitive game but calpreps.com does not think Savanna measures up and is projecting a 44-14 Katella victory. Katella will be the toughest team Savanna has faced all season.

#7 is the Rancho Mirage Rattlers (6-3, 3-1). The Rattlers seem to have recovered from their midseason adversity and beat the lowly Desert Mirage Rams (2-7, 1-3) of Thermal, by a score of 47-8. They face their easiest game of the year in hosting the Desert Hot Springs Eagles (0-9). The Eagles are in such bad disarray that they had to cancel a game a couple of weeks ago because a fight broke out in the stands that ended up drawing a player into the stands.They ended up forfeiting to Coachella Valley. Calpreps projects it a 56-13 Rattler victory. The Rattlers should be a lock for the Division 11 playoffs.

#8 in the CIFss poll are the Heritage Christian Warriors (8-0). They beat the Maranatha Minutemen (6-4, 1-2) by a score of 53-32 in what was the most crucial Olympic League contest for the Warriors. The Warriors are now assured of at least 2nd place in the Olympic League and a lock on a Division 11 playoff spot. The Warriors ground out 432 yards rushing in their Wing T offense but threw the ball well enough to keep the Minutemen defense having to defend for the pass too. They completed only 5 passes but 2 of them went for TD's. See Ben Rogers posting in hscalifornia.scout.com under the week 9 scores for further details on the Warriors. The Warriors actually have a tougher league game this week, but even a loss will not effect their playoff eligibility. They will face the Olympic League favorite Valley Christian Crusaders (7-2, 2-0). Regardless of the outcome, this will be a good test for the Warriors to help them prepare for playoff caliber competition, as there will be teams with talent equal to the level of talent of Valley Christian. If the Warriors were somehow able to win this game, they will be the Olympic League Champions and have a good chance of ascending to a top 4 seed in the D-11 playoffs. Valley Christian was able to beat Maranatha 63-14 a few weeks ago. The Crusaders can both run and throw and do it efficiently. The Crusader run defense has been very stingy, rarely giving up more than 100 yards on the ground. The Warriors will obviously test that stat. Crusader senior QB Isaac Joseph has thrown for 1,407 yards and 23 TD's with only 3 interceptions while senior RB Gianni Hurd has led the way with 1,071 yards on the ground & 14 TD's. Calpreps projects a 46-21 Crusader win. Looks like a good one to watch if you're near Valley College in Van Nuys this Friday.

#9 are the Segerstrom Jaguars (6-3, 2-2), but their limited playoff options were discussed earlier above in the Westminster write up.

#10 in the CIFss poll are the Coachella Valley Arabs (7-2, 4-0). Some say they are fortunate to have faced both Yucca Valley and Rancho Mirage when they were without one of their top athletes, but nevertheless the Arabs command 1st place in the De Anza League after their 41-27 victory over the Twenty Nine Palms Wildcats (6-3, 2-2). Star QB Armando Deniz is making it difficult for other teams not to take notice of the Arabs. He passed for 310 yards and 4 TD's and ran for another 75 and 1 TD. Deniz has thrown for 2,298 yards in just 8 games. He gets help in the run game but still leads the team in rushing with 437 yards and 9 TD's. He has the third highest passing yardage total among Southern Section QB's who have played only 8 games. He trails only Culver City's Jonathan Martin (2,793-9 games) and Arroyo's Ernesto Camacho (2,380-10 games) in passing yardage in Division 11.

The Arabs have an easy final game against the Desert Mirage Rams (2-7, 1-3). Calpreps projects a 42-6 victory for the Arabs. We will see the Arabs in the Division 11 playoffs and it will be a welcome sight to see QB Deniz taking on the challenges of playoff football.

So who else is still in the playoff race?
Hillcrest (6-3, 2-2) on the bubble possibly finishing in a 3 way tie for second place in the 6 team River Valley League. It will depend on where the league assigns playoff eligible spots.

St. Genevieve(6-2, 1-1) Should be a lock for 2cnd place in the 4 team Santa Fe League and that should get them a playoff spot.

Victor Valley(4-5, 2-1) of Victorville. Likely to finish 2cnd in the 5 team Desert Sky League and get into the D-11 playoffs but will be challenged in the last game by Barstow(2-7, 2-1). Victor Valley are 1 TD favorites.

Lakeside(6-3, 1-3) of Lake Elsinore. Not sure if there is any way but an At-large entry.

Irvine(5-4, 2-2) holds the edge on third place eligibility from the Pacific Coast League and is favored to win in week 10.

Ontario Christian(6-3, 2-2) only wacky league tiebreaker rules could save them and get them 3rd place eligibility, otherwise hoping for At-large.

Crean Lutheran(5-4, 2-1) likely IN from 2cnd place in the Academy League.

Jurupa Hills(5-4, 3-1) heavily favored to finish 2cnd in the San Andreas League and make the D-11 playoffs.

Torrance(3-6, 2-2) only an upset of West Torrance(4-5, 3-1) in week 10 would give them an outside chance at playoff eligibility and selection.

Pacific(7-2, 2-2) of San Bernardino, likely to achieve 3rd place playoff eligibility from the Mountain Valley League. Will that be good enough?

Rancho Alamitos(5-4, 2-2) favored to achieve 3rd place playoff eligibility from the Garden Grove League but face a tough last test against Santiago(5-4, 2-2) of Garden Grove.

Ramona(5-4, 2-2) needs an upset win and help from others for any chance. Not likely.

Tahquitz(3-6, 1-3) could end up in a 3 way tie for third in the 6 team Mountain Pass League. A slim chance.

Northwood(2-7, 1-3) could get to third in the 6 team Pacific Coast League with an upset win over Irvine.

Bishop Montgomery(2-7, 1-2), the lowest rated team in D-11, currently tied for first in the weak, 5 team, South Catholic League, controls their own destiny, but projects to drop to third, out of playoff eligibility, by losing last game of the season.

This should be short. All the critical games in the Ocean League with unknown winners are over. See my post on Culver City (8-1, 3-1) for their details.

Ocean League presumptive 2017 champions, the Lawndale Cardinals (9-0), had an easy time of it last week in beating league doormat, the Beverly Hills Normans (0-9) 55-0. This week is only slightly tougher as they travel to play the Hawthorne Cougars (5-4, 1-3).

Hawthorne beat Beverly Hills 50-18 earlier this year, but that is about the most positive info I can give on this one. Hawthorne will have to play its best execution game of the year to score anything before Lawndale puts in all their scrubs. Lucky thing for Hawthorne, Lawndale might actually substitute a little early to rest their stars for the playoffs and give their back-ups some additional playing time. Calpreps project it as a 60-0 Lawndale victory.

Lawndale will be hoping that their undefeated season and high rankings will land them a top 4 seed in the Division 5 playoffs, although calpreps.com stats say that Lawndale has the weakest schedule strength of any team in Division 5.

The game of the week, might not be much of a game, but at least on paper, it should mean something. The Santa Monica Vikings (3-6, 2-2) travel to face the El Segundo Eagles (7-2, 2-2). The teams are currently tied for third place in the 6 team Ocean League. The winner will emerge with the last playoff eligible spot from the Ocean League, but the Eagles are far and above the better team with probably the top junior QB in the Ocean League this year.

The Vikings committed at least 6 turnovers against Culver City and cannot throw the ball effectively while El Segundo is well coached and not likely to make many stupid mistakes. El Segundo's biggest concern may not be the game against the Vikings but whether they can get a playoff spot in Division 7 when finishing in 3rd place in the Ocean League. There could be as many as 15 teams finishing 1st or 2cnd in their leagues that will get an eligible playoff spot in Division 7, ahead of them. Calpreps projects it as a 42-10 Eagle victory.

It will only be that close if Santa Monica can prevent the turnovers. If there is any good news for the Vikings, it is the return of athletic Tony Dancy playing both FB, TB & LB for the Vikings. Unfortunately, he does not have much talent around him.

The Culver City Centaurs (8-1, 3-1) had a laughably easy game against the Santa Monica Vikings (3-6 2-2). The Vikings fumbled the ball about 4 times and were intercepted at least twice and the Centaurs rolled out to a 35-0 lead after just one quarter of play. The Centaurs put it in cruise control for the rest of the game and cruised to a 42-0 victory.

Centaur QB Jonathan Martin completed all his pass attempts for 197 yards and 4 TD's. I thought the Vikings might provide more fight than Hawthorne (5-4, 1-3) but their sloppy play prevented them from challenging at all. The Centaur win pretty much locks up second place and a Division 11 playoff spot.

The Centaurs should be able to easily defeat the Beverly Hills Normans (0-9) in the last regular season and Ocean League contest of the year next week. Calpreps projects a 62-0 victory, but I have reason to believe it could be substantially closer, although I believe the Centaurs should still have enough talent to overcome any adversity they may be facing this coming week.
