By David A. Willauer-Contributing Writer-Excalibur Field-San Marcos High School-San Marcos, CA: In one of the wildest comebacks ever at the Excalibur Football on the facilities of San Marcos High School, things started going the Knights way as they were going to dominate the contest but after a lot of Knight turnovers and interceptions in the third quarter, the Mavericks of LaCosta Canyon High School made the game exciting as they led 27-26 in the fourth quarter and with the game tied 34-34 the Knights knew the right play that they used and won by a 41-34 score.

The Knights jumped out to an early 26-0 lead on 2 field goal of 20 by Caleb Mancini, 2 Miles Hastings passes of 63 yards to Kyle Webb and to 45 yards to Gavin Cherveny. Josh Bornes contributed on a 2 yard touchdown run.

"We stepped up and made the right plays at the end of the night to win the game" " When LCC started to catch up on us I felt that the wheels were starting to bang up on us but we kept battling after a lot of mistakes and we found a way to win when you turn the ball over against LaCosta Canyon their offense is good." "On the final play my qb Miles Hastings made a good play he stayed in the pocket and looked for the winning pass to Gavin Cherveny and the rest was history the play was used was called a 4 verticle.

Culver City & the Ocean League, week 7 postgame, week 8 pregame

The Culver City Centaurs (6-1,1-1) had a rough night of it against the physically impressive Lawndale Cardinals (7-0) as they lost 14-33. For details, go the DailyBreeze online report:

http://www.dailybreeze.com/2017/10/...er-city-in-battle-for-ocean-league-supremacy/

The Centaurs may be a little bigger & stronger this year than they have been in past years, but they in no way compare to the physicality of Lawndale. If you are scouting for college OL, DL & linebackers, you should take a close look at Lawndale. Star Cardinal RB is a known factor with an offer from Utah already. The good news for the Centaurs is that they can pretty much write this one off and be fairly comfortable that they are unlikely to encounter any D-11 playoff team that is as big & physical as Lawndale.

The Centaurs can afford to lose the Lawndale game as long as they take care of business in the rest of the Ocean League. Up until this last weekend, the opponent for CC this week, the Hawthorne Cougars (5-2,1-1) looked like the biggest threat to Culver, perhaps a trap game. It still could be, but the Santa Monica Vikings (2-5,1-1) now appear as the bigger threat. Don't know if grades or newly eligible transfers caused this but Samo beat the Cougars handily 42-14. Hawthorne had shown some capability against lower level competition, but the recent loss to Leuzinger exposed them as a paper tiger. Still, the cougars league record matches Culver, but Hawthorne is unlikely to muster any more league victories.

The Centaurs need to make sure they are prepared and motivated to take care of business this week and set themselves up with a second place Ocean League showdown against Santa Monica next.

Lawndale took care of the most dangerous challenger to the Ocean League crown last week in beating Culver City, but this week they face what has got to be the only real remaining threat as they host the El Segundo Eagles (6-1, 1-1). The Eagles are a young team but possess a lot of pieces to make them a successful team. And each week of experience makes them less susceptable to those young team mistakes. Last week the Eagles had their easiest game of the week in beating league doormat, the Beverly Hills Normans (0-7), 56-7. This week will be the Eagles toughest game of the season.

The even tougher part is that Lawndale is probably very much aware that they lost to the Eagles last season, 14-7, causing a 3 way tie for first place. I believe Lawndale has made it very clear this year, through words and actions, that they have no intention of sharing an Ocean League title with anyone this year. Calpreps projects it as a 35-8 Lawndale victory. I think a best case scenario for El Segundo might be a 15-28 loss for the Eagles, but with revenge on the mind of the Cardinals, it could also be a lot worse.

Santa Monica became the biggest challenge to the top three after their 42-14 shocker over Hawthorne last week. The Vikings led 15-6 after a quarter and 29-6 by halftime. As stated earlier, not sure if something has changed on the roster for either Samo or Hawthorne, but the result of the game was a bit of a surprise. Samo practically takes the week off as they travel to Beverly Hills for what should be the easiest game of the year for the Vikings.

SDSU Upset by Boise State in football

: Former Carlsbad Alum Christian Chapman and Aztecs suffer first loss vs. Boise State

By David A. Willauer-Contributing Writer-The Aztecs of San Diego State were upset Saturday Night at SDCCU Stadium with a big crowd of 49,000 look on to honor former SDSU Alumnus Marshall Faulk who went on and did well in the National Football League, but the outcome wasn't good as the Broncos jumped out to a 21-0 early lead to shock the Aztec fans who wore their red shirts.

In the second half the Aztecs scored 2 touchdowns on Christian Chapman's 89 yard pass to Freddie Trevillion for the first score and after a Boise State field goal of 33 yards, Rashod Penny 21 carries for 53 yards scored on a 11 yard run to go within 24-14 before Boise State scored on their last touchdown to make the final score 31-14

Yeah, I mean, our run game is our foundation. The run game opens up everything, and when they stop the run like that, we kinda gotta try to open up the pass game but it's tough, because we're built on the run game. said CHRISTIAN CHAPMAN Tonight they were just more physical, and they were able to stop the run, and that's our offense. "When you can't run the ball, we're going to struggle a little bit. Hats off to them. They were able to stop our best guy on offense, and that helped them a lot."

* Updated information on Christian Chapman, Jr., QB (12-for-27, 240 yds., 1 TD, 0 INT | 14 att., 26 yds.)  Was 12 for 27 passing for 240 yards and rushed 14 times for 26 yards.  Is 19-4 as the starting quarterback over his career.  Recorded his sixth straight game without interception and now has thrown 137 passes without throwing an interception (seven touchdowns over that span).  Threw an 89-yard touchdown pass to Fred Trevillion, the fourth-longest passing play in SDSU history and the longest since a 90- yard pass by Ryan Lindley to Vincent Brown vs. No. 25 Utah on Nov. 20,

Mission Hills defeats La Costa Canyon in a battle of undefeated teams

Jack Tuttle touchdown passes of 10 and 15 yards paces undefeated Mission Hills in win

By David A. Willauer-Contributing Writer-LaCosta Canyon High School-Carlsbad, CA-In a battle of ranked and 2 undefeated Avocado League football powers things started going for 4th ranked LaCosta Canyon as the offense took an early 13-3 lead on qb Jake Neufield's (12 completions out of 23 attempts for 168 yards threw a 55 yard pass to JaQuan Carroll (3 receptions for 88 yards) in the first period.

In the second period, the Grizzlies Ezekiel Matta connected on a 30 field goal put Mission Hills within 4 at 7-3, Maverick running back Karron Lippert 7 carries for 57 yards dazzled the crowd on the home field as he scored on a 29 yard run to take a 13-3 lead.

The magic arm of Mission Hills quarterback and University of Utah bound Jeff Tuttle as he threw 17 completions out of 27 attempts for 155 yards came back as he threw 2 touchdown passes of 10 and 15 yards to Chris Olave (13 receptions for 163 yards put the Grizzles up 17-13.

In the 3rd quarter running back Damon Wigand scored on a 6 yard run to make the final score 24-13 in favor of the top ranked Grizzlies

Chris Hauser Mission Hills head football coach commented on the game tonight: "There were two good hard battled football teams that you saw out there tonight and this is the type of game was fun for our ball club." "Tonight the players and fans came out tonight and that is what good football is all about the support is here to embrace the atmosphere it was a battle."

" When we trailed 13-3 we found a way to come back and won tonight which will give us something to hear." " Jack Tuttle my qb was banged up earlier in the first quarter but I am proud of what hedid tonight and showed a lot of grit tonight but we have a lot of football left this is what I think we hope to see and we got the win, there were two teams that battled hard in this key Avocado League game and we wanted to win tonight." said Chris Hauser

"We had our squad and they had their's squad it was a battle of 2 teams and wanted to show up on who was going to win." "Jake Neufield is special athlete and a veteran senior is a fun ball player to watch LaCosta Canyon."

With the win the Grizzles of Mission Hills are 7-0 and top ranked in San Diego High School Football County will host the El Camino Wildcats next Friday night and lead the series vs the Mavericks of Lacosta Canyon as their record falls to 6-1, lead the series 3 games to 2, will travel to San Marcos High School to take on the Knights.

Division 11 week 6 postgame, week 7 pregame

#1 See the Ocean League post for details on Culver City (6-0), but I will add that senior QB Jonathan Martin is listed on maxpreps as having thrown for 367 yards and 4 TD's, and also, his first three interceptions of the season against El Segundo (5-1, 0-1) in their Ocean League opener. According to the, less than official, maxpreps stats, Martin is 5th in passing yardage in the state right now with 2,075 yards and two of the guys ahead of him have played 7 games. He is third in yards per game at 345.8 and third in TD passes with 28.

#2 Arroyo (7-0) of El Monte barely squeezed by their biggest challenge in the Mission Valley League as they beat South El Monte (6-1, 2-1), 14-13. The Arroyo defense was the star in this game as the offense struggled. Arroyo scored first and held a 7-3 lead until 7 minutes were left in the third quarter and South El Monte's Jarvis Alexander took a punt back 50 yards for a TD and a 10-7 lead. South extended its lead to 13-7 with a 23 yard field goal by Gaspar Beltran with 11 minutes to go in the 4th quarter.

South was still leading with 7 minutes to go but the Arroyo defense produced another stop which resulted in a punt to Arroyo and them starting possession at their own 47. And with about 4 minutes to go, Arroyo QB Ernesto Camacho scored a TD on a 2 yard run. Jesse Oritiz' extra point was good to give Arroyo the lead 14-13. The Arroyo D produced two more stops before the end of the game, one of them on a fumble recovery.

Arroyo, one of 3 remaining undefeated teams in Division 11, should be able to cruise to an undefeated season and Mission Valley League championship as well as one of the top seedings in the Division 11 playoffs as there are no significant challengers remaining in the Mission Valley League including next week's opponent, El Monte (4-2, 2-0), who calpreps projects to lose this contest by a score of 44-3. El Monte features sophomore RB Abel Cueva who has rushed for over 1,000 yards in just 6 games, but El Monte is a paper tiger and has not seen a team as good as Arroyo all year.

#3 Covina (5-1, 1-0) also had a squeaker in their Valle Vista League opener against San Dimas (3-3, 0-1). It was not supposed to be this difficult. Covina won just 36-35. Covina led 15-0 until 4 minutes were left in the second quarter when San Dimas scored twice before the half with the help of an interception and San Dimas was able to duplicate a pass for a 2 point conversion to get even with Covina before the half. With 8 minutes to go in the third quarter Covina took back the lead on a 37 yard TD pass from sophomore Nin Burns II, to Danny Urrea.

But San Dimas responded a minute later with a 47 yard TD run by senior Noah Maldonado and it was knotted again 22-22. Covina broke back on top with a 45 yard TD pass from Burns to Tristan Sprague. Covina held the edge 29-22 going into the 4th quarter. After a long run late in the third quarter by Covina's sophomore RB Erik Cuellar, they were able to score on a short run with 11 minutes to play and increase their lead to 36-22 after a successful PAT by Brandon Gutierrez. San Dimas's Maldonado scored running from 12 yards out with 7 minutes to play to close the gap to 36-29 in favor of Covina. Covina was unable sustain a drive and punted with San Dimas getting possession at the Covina 46 with about 4 minutes to go. With just about a minute to go, San Dimas' Maldonado scored on a run from 8 yards out. San Dimas decided to try for a 2 point conversion but failed so Covina escaped with 36-35 victory.

San Dimas ran for 345 yards in the contest. Senior Dylan Ware ran for 120 yards on 15 carries for San Dimas and Maldonado had 139 on 16 carries, including all 5 San Dimas TD's. Covina was much more balanced with Burns throwing for 210 yards on 12 completions in 19 attempts, including 3 TD's. Cuellar carried most of the load on the ground for Covina getting 24 carries for 155 yards and 1 TD. San Dimas was probably the most critical game of the regular season for Covina as San Dimas was the most serious challenge to second place and a virtual lock on a Division 11 post season berth.

What is not known is whether Covina is good enough to clinch the Valle Vista League championship but that should be decided this week as they Northview (4-2, 1-0) of Covina. Northview is favored by calpreps 35-28. Northview has faced tough competition from teams as strong or stronger than Covina in Don Lugo (5-1) and Charter Oak (6-0), but the last of those games was about a month ago. Most of the success of Northview would likely be credited to senior QB Steven Comstock who is 71 of 126 for 1,365 yards in 6 games with 15 TD's & 7 interceptions. Comstock also leads the team in rushing with 435 yards and 4 TD's. Senior receiver Jimmy Amezquita is his favorite target with 24 receptions for 558 yards and 7 TD's.

With Covina coming off an emotional high of the victory over San Dimas, I tend to agree with the calpreps projection, but Covina should have plenty of motivation as this game should determine the Valle Vista League championship and a win for Covina would likely have them finish with a top 4 seeding in the Division 11 playoffs.

#4 Segerstrom (5-1, 1-0) of Santa Ana is #4 in the CIF-SS poll and #5 in the calpreps.com D-11 rankings. Segerstrom had an acceptable 28-13 victory over Ocean View (4-2, 0-1) of Huntington Beach in their opener of the tightly contested Golden West League. Segerstrom is a run first almost exclusively. They guard their stat and video data closely on maxpreps.com and hudl but other teams they play are not afraid to reveal the Segerstrom secrets via their own stats and videos that they share. Segerstrom had 275 yards on the ground and less than 50 through the air and were only able to convert 1 of 8 third downs. They won the turnover battle 2-1 intercepting Ocean View twice. Unfortunately for Segerstrom, Ocean View only projects to be the 5th place finisher in the 6 team Golden League.

Segerstrom gets an easy game this week against league doormat Loara (2-4, 0-1) of Anaheim. Calpreps projects it as a 44-3 Segerstrom victory. Segerstrom currently projects to be the 2nd place finisher in this league but the remaining three league games after Loara will all be tougher than the first two, including fellow D-11 foe Westminster (4-2, 0-1).

#5 Arcadia (3-3, 2-1) is ranked #4 for by Calpreps.com but #6 in the CIF-SS D-11 poll. Arcadia suffered a mild upset loss to Burbank (4-2, 3-0), 14-17, last week. While both defenses had their moments in this contest, Burbank definitely got the better of Arcadia holding them to 94 yards rushing and 67 passing while the Burbank run game had 276 yards on 63 carries along with another 106 yards passing on 11 of 19. Burbank QB Matthew Porras had over 100 yards passing and 100 rushing. Senior D.Williams added another 109 yards rushing for Burbank. Burbank had 82 offensive plays to Arcadia's 32. Arcadia was leading 14-10 early in the third quarter but Burbank QB Porras ran in from 20 yards out with 10 minutes to go in the 3rd quarter to take the lead at 17-14, which held up for the final score.

Arcadia is now tied for third place in the 6 team Pacific league with Burroughs (3-2, 2-1) but hold the head to head edge as they beat Burroughs 31-26 on 9/29. Arcadia also has an easier schedule finish than either Burbank or Burroughs with 2 of their wins to be extremely easy and only the Pasadena (1-5,1-2) game being a trap game. All three, Arcadia, Burbank & Burroughs, still face heavy league favorite Crescenta Valley (6-0). Burbank and Burroughs also face each other the last game of the regular season. They are also traditional rivals. This week and next week, Arcadia has it easy. This week calpreps projects a 40-6 victory over Hoover (0-5) of Glendale. Unless Arcadia can upset Crescenta Valley, I expect that they will not be able to secure a top 4 seeding in D-11.

Culver City & the Ocean League week 6 postgame, week 7 pregame

The Culver City Centaurs (6-0) won their most significant game of the season, beating the El Segundo Eagles (5-1, 0-1), 46-27, in their opener to Ocean League play. It was not because it was a league opener, but the level of opponent they were facing. The Eagles are expected to be the Centaurs' toughest challenge to achieving second place in the Ocean League and a lock on a playoff spot.

Only Hawthorne (5-1, 1-0) stands in their way to achieving that goal now, in my estimation. Highlights can be found off of their Hudl.com page:

http://www.hudl.com/team/v2/34145/boys-varsity-football

And there is a El Segundo focused write up in the Daily Breeze:

http://www.dailybreeze.com/2017/10/...nst-el-segundo-in-battle-of-undefeated-teams/

The Daily Breeze also has a brief preview of the big matchup this week of Culver City hosting Lawndale (6-0):

http://www.dailybreeze.com/2017/10/...pproaching-key-stretch-of-ocean-league-games/

This one should be for the Ocean League Championship. If you are looking for fireworks on the football field, this one should provide it. I highly recommend this game. In another admittedly highly biased homer projection, I will predict a 42-38 Centaur victory.

El Segundo will have time to recover before their next tough game as they have the easiest game of the year this week at the Beverly Hills Normans (0-6). Calpreps projects a 62-0 victory. The Eagles could be forgiven if it is something less than that as they might pull their starters as early as possible and be a little less focused than they should be as they await Ocean League favorite, Lawndale, the week after the Normans.

Calpreps.com projects the Santa Monica Vikings (1-5, 0-1) at the Hawthorne Cougars (5-1, 1-0) as the closest Ocean League game this week. Hawthorne was dispensing with Beverly Hills 50-18 last week, while Santa Monica was being shellacked by Lawndale 60-0. Don't let those scores fool ya, this game could be as close as the calpreps predicted 35-27 victory for Hawthorne.

Lacosta Canyon defeats El Camino

LaCosta Canyon spoils El Camino on Youth Football Night

By David A. Willauer-Contributing Writer-Friday, October 6, 2017-Herb Meyer Stadium-El Camino High School-Oceanside, CA:

The Lacosta Canyon Mavericks improve their record to 6-0 on the season always known as a traditioned football team with a quick offense and a fast defense proved themselves today as they defeated the Wildcats of El Camino HIgh School by a 38-21 in a well contested battle that was held at Herb Meyer Stadium.

Karron Lippert led the Mavericks with 21 carries for 134 yards rushing, teammate JaQuan Carroll carried the ball 7 times for 113 yards and scored 1 touchdown run of 7 yards, Jake Newfield 11 completions out of 12 attempts for 127 yards scored 3 touchdown runs of 2, 2, and 13. Jake Sheck threw a halfback pass to Zach Monihan (3 receptions for 86 yards) for 7 yards. Field Goal kicker Boyd Taro connected on a 29 yard field goal for the win.

Sean Sovocol Lacosta Canyon Head Football Coach: "It was a good game today I was surprised on how we won but battled hard tonight as our squad is like a family and I'm thankful for these guys, they played good solid football tonight." "We are ready for Mission HIlls next week in a big contest at our stadium."

Jaden Casey 27 completions out of 42 passes for 349 yards along with 2 touchdown passes of 70 yards to Malachi Russell (8 receptions for 91 yards) and to 2 yards to Kameron Bullock (3 receptions for 34 yards. Chris Brown 10 carries for 13 yards scored the other Wildcat touchdown on a 4 yard run.

The Mavericks of LaCosta Canyon will host the Grizzlies of Mission Hills in a battle of undefeated team while the Wildcats of El Camino go to 3-3 will host Fallbrook High School.

Division 11, rankings 7-10,etc., week 5 postgame, week 6 pregame

#6/7 Rancho Mirage (3-2) is ranked 6th by calpreps.com and 7th in the Division 11 CIF-SS poll. Rancho dropped from the #3 spot after their stunning loss to Bell Gardens by a score of 38-21. Rancho RB Marques Prior looked sharp with 118 yards rushing and 3 TD's, but on just 5 carries. I have no info but it sure seems like perhaps Prior sustained an injury and Rancho was unable to carry the game without their stud RB. Prior also plays on defense and Rancho ended up giving up 390 yards rushing to Bell Gardens. It is always hard to win when that happens.

It was a good time for a wake up call for Rancho though as they start De Anza league play this week against Coachella Valley (3-2). CV is also a D-11 team but does not project to place well enough in the 6 team De Anza to get to the playoffs. This is obviously a huge game for CV, although they face other challenges in league. Rancho still projects as the favorite although Yucca Valley (5-0) might be able to challenge. Bell Gardens was a run team but CV is a pass first team with a prolific passer in senior Armando Deniz. He has thrown for 1,386 yards this season, 17th best in the Southern Section, with 10 TD's but 5 interceptions. He will be no surprise to Rancho as the slim 6 footer threw for 3,633 yards & 29 TD's last year. Calpreps projects this as a 31-14 Rancho victory, I will put it a little closer at 31-21.

#8 Sultana (3-2) of Hesperia, in both calpreps & the CIF-SS D-11 poll. Sultana had a bye last week and faces Serrano (0-5) of Phelan. Serrano has been playing superior competition all preseason. Sultana projects as being the weakest team they have played so far this season although Serrano lost, by a score of 49-42, on 9/22 to Kaiser (3-2) a team of similar strength to Sultana. Sultana better hope the emotional high of their victory over favored Summit (3-2) on 9/22 is not blocking their concentration on Serrano. I bet Serrano will come in focused.

Serrano gave up 440 yards rushing to Kaiser even though Kaiser seemed to struggle with what little passing they did. Serrano's passing offense has been a little shaky, although good enough against Kaiser. Their run game looks pretty solid behind senior Tony Willis & junior Nicholas Reed-Casey. Sultana's passing game has been a little suspect as well, but senior QB Michael Mendoza came through with a gem against Summit going 12 of 21 for 175 yards and 3 TD's. If he is able to do that against Serrano they should be able to come away with the victory, but calpreps is not so sure as they are projecting a 21-20 Serrano victory.

#9 Westminster (4-1) in the calpreps rankings, but #10 in the CIF-SS poll. Westminster beat a soft Beckman (1-4) of Irvine last Saturday 41-20. Westminster starts Golden West league play projecting as the third place team, but the projections are really too close to call in this league. The league overall is 23-7 in pre-league.

Westminster will be challenged right off the league starting line by the Santa Ana Saints (4-1). Santa Ana is almost exclusively a run only team, amassing 1,397 yards & 8 TD's against mostly lower level competition. Westminster has had mixed results for their run defense although we know that Isaac Barrera can really stuff the middle at times. He ran down & tackled a RB on a screen pass last week, along with his various run stuffs. Calpreps is only willing to project Westminster as the slightest favorite on the road and is picking them 31-30 over Santa Ana.

#10 Katella (4-1) of Anaheim in the calpreps rankings and listed among "others" in the CIF-SS D-11 poll. Katella embarks on the easiest part of their season, the opening of Orange league play. Only Century (4-1) of Anaheim offers even a little resistance to an Orange League championship in this 6 team league. The Orange League ranks 61st among the 72 Southern Section football 11 man football leagues. This week Katella faces one of four league doormats in Anaheim High (1-4). I expect little resistance from Anaheim and neither does calpreps as they are projecting a 41-7 victory for Division 11 playoff bound Katella.

#10 Lakeside (5-0) of Lake Elsinore, according to the CIFss D-11 poll. Calpreps has them ranked 14th in the division. Lakeside has had a wonderful preseason beating up on mostly creampuffs with their 29-23 victory of Canyon Springs (3-2) of Moreno Valley being their only opponent of any real substance. Their other opponents went a combined 2-19 so far. Now Lakeside starts Sunbelt league playing about as opposite of what they have seen. A monster team, the 14th highest rated team in the Southern Section, Heritage (4-1). Calpreps says Lakeside has no chance in predicting a 56-0 loss to Heritage. Lakeside projects to finish 4th in league. They might as well mail it in for the next two weeks and just concentrate on the last 3 weeks of league where only 1 game projects as a loss and to a team that I am sure they will hope to upset, Elsinore (4-1) of Wildomar.

CIF expected to revise rule on sit-out periods for transfers

Per Eric Sondheimer, LA Times:

The California Interscholastic Federation's governing body, the Federated Council, is expected to vote this week to revise its sit-out period rule for transfers who do not change residences.

Currently, there are specific days for when those athletes become eligible. It was Oct. 1 for fall sports and will be Jan. 1 for winter sports.

Under a proposal that would take effect in 2018-19, the sit-out period will be 50% of the total number days in that particular season of sport. The rule would help prevent athletes in certain sports from sitting out more than others.

Under the new rule, the sit-out period would still be pretty much the same in lots of sports. In football, players would become eligible on Sept. 25 based on the season starting Aug. 10, 17 or 24. In basketball, Dec. 23 would be the day to become eligible after practice begins Nov. 12. In baseball and softball, it would be April 2.

The Southern Section Council is meeting on Tuesday to vote whether to support the proposal.

Division 11, week 5 postgame, week 6 preview

#1 The Culver City Centaurs (5-0) are again atop the CIFss Division 11 poll as well as the calpreps.com rankings. They escaped with a 30-27 victory over a Dorsey (0-5) team that is much better than their record indicates. The Centaurs open league play this week against undefeated El Segundo (5-0), the #5 team in the CIF-SS D-7 poll. This is THE Game of the week in the Ocean League and for D-11. How close could this game be? Calpreps is releasing their first week of projections and has it listed as a 34-33 Centaur victory.

#2 Arroyo (6-0, 2-0) of El Monte. The CIF-SS poll & the calpreps rankings match for the top 4 teams. Arroyo easily beat Rosemead (1-5) for their second league victory by a score of 35-6. It will not be quite as easy this week as Arroyo faces South El Monte (6-0, 2-0) in what should be the game for the Mission Valley League championship. Still, Calpreps projects Arroyo as heavy favorites. South RB Sal Tovar has 927 rushing yards in just 6 games with 16 TD's, but South has also shown an ability to throw the football when needed. It should should get much tougher though against Arroyo. Calpreps projects it as a 31-12 Arroyo victory.

#3 Arcadia (3-2, 2-0) has almost locked up its playoff spot with the 2 wins in the Pacific league against significant challengers including a 31-26 victory over Burroughs (2-2,1-1) of Burbank last week. The last significant challenge to second place is this week at home vs Burbank (3-2, 2-0). Arcadia relies heavily on their passing game led by QB Maximillian Davila. WR's Deonte Bevel and Rolandiss Whitener can both break loose. Burbank is well balanced between pass & run with QB Matthew Porras & mainly RB Darnell Williams. Calpreps projects it as a 21-14 Arcadia victory at home, but anything within 7 points on a projection means the opponent is capable of winning the game.

#4 Covina (4-1) had a bye last week. Covina will start Valle Vista League play this week, at home vs San Dimas (3-2), projected to be their second toughest opponent in league and they are also the second toughest team Covina has had to face so far this season and the toughest since since week 0 against Arroyo of El Monte. Covina has impressive offensive numbers with just over 1,000 yards each rushing and passing. Sophomore RB Erik Cuellar carries the rock for them most of the time with 839 yards in 5 game. Sophomore QB Nin Burns II throws it. Looks like this team might be very good for the next couple of years. San Dimas is a run first team with perhaps just enough ability to throw the ball to keep you honest.....maybe. While Covina is favored, calpreps projects it as a pretty close 35-27 Covina victory.

#5 is Segerstrom (4-1) of Santa Ana in the calpreps rankings & #6 if the CIFSS poll. They play in the tightly competitive Golden West League and start league play this week against Ocean View (4-1) of Huntington Beach. Segerstrom easily beat a soft Northwood (1-4) of Irvine last week 40-12. Not so easy this week. Ocean View with a slight run heavy tilt mostly by RB Noah De Loara with 752 yards in 5 games with 8 TD's, but QB Noah Hickman can also run it with 312 yards and 7 TD's to go along with his 737 yards passing for 8 TD's. This shouldn't be easy for Segerstrom but calpreps projects them as prevailing at home by a score of 31-20.

#5 Hillcrest (4-1) of Riverside is #5 in the CIF-SS poll & #7 in the calpreps rankings. They had a bye last week and open River Valley League play this week on the road at Ramona (3-2) of Riverside. Not sure who will be under center more for Hillcrest this week, junior Jalen Jefferson or senior Cordell Labrie. Perhaps they like to run Labrie out of a wildcat formation? And then they may still have the speedy Elijah Dominguez at RB. The Ramona run game looks solid with senior RB Isaiah Baker leading the way with 870 yards & 14 TD's in 5 games, but the passing game is a little suspect. Calpreps projects a fairly easy 44-22 victory for Hillcrest against what should be a 4th or 5th place team in league.

Ocean League week 5 postgame, league play week 1 preview

Ocean League favorites, the Lawndale Cardinals took care of business in their final preleague game against Torrance, beating them 42-0. From the Daily Breeze:

http://www.dailybreeze.com/2017/09/...s-offense-strikes-it-big-in-rout-of-torrance/

The Cardinal offense may have been a little lethargic, waiting for the big play to score on several instances. Their defense was impressive albeit against the snail pace Torrance ball control wing T offense, holding them to 53 yards rushing & passing.

Lawndale opens league play against the Santa Monica (1-4) Vikings. The Vikings registered their first victory (26-0) of the season a week ago against lowly South Torrance. They have 2 weeks to prepare for Lawndale, but Samo has shown only limited abilities and Lawndale may come with a little extra motivation after playing without enthusiasm against Torrance and this coming week being the first league contest. This should be a slam dunk easy victory for Lawndale.

I will predict a 56-0 Lawndale victory.

Culver City (5-0) travels to the El Segundo (5-0) Eagles for the Ocean League game of the week. See my Culver write up for last week's action for Culver. El Segundo dominated lowly South Torrance last week 49-0. It was the usual combination of well balanced offense with solid defense. El Segundo has not given up more than 18 points in any one game and the Centaurs have not scored less than 30 in a game. The Centaur D will have to find a way to slow the Eagle O & give opportunities for the the Centaurs high powered air raid offense to score. This is probably the Eagle D's toughest challenge so far this season. In an admittedly homer prediction by me,

I will pick the Centaurs to win in a 38-31 contest.

Both Hawthorne (4-1) and Beverly Hills (0-5) had last week off so no excuses about preparation for either team. While Hawthorne looks impressive by its record, it has been against weak competition except for the 55-14 shellacking they took from Leuzinger (2-3) last week. The good news is that Beverly Hills is similar, if not worse, than the prior 4 opponents that Hawthorne faced and vanquished easily.

I will predict a 46-7 Hawthorne victory.
