6. (6) Upland (1-0 4-2) With a big second half Upland defeated feisty Etiwanda 38-28 Friday night. It always seems Etiwanda gives upland fits with tough matchups. Both teams have great athletes. Next: Damien (0-1 3-3)

Jayce Johnson, a 6-foot-11 senior center at Santa Monica, has checked out of school and intends to enroll at a college next semester, Coach James Hecht said.

Johnson is going to finish his high school classes at a charter school, Hecht said. California, Utah and Colorado have been recruiting him.

"I think he felt like he was ready to be in college," Hecht said.

Johnson played for Santa Monica last season. He previously was at JSerra, Mater Dei and Findlay Prep.

After sitting out more than a month of the 2015-16 sports season, dozens of students who transferred without moving will become eligible today to play for their new teams.

Birmingham will get two new starters in Edward Keller, an offensive lineman from Calabasas, and Christian Moore, a defensive end from Chaminade.

Servite is going to unveil Keith Taylor, a defensive back who transferred from St. John Bosco.
Calabasas has a group of football players becoming eligible. Mission Viejo adds running back Jacob Clark and receiver Elijah Collier, both from Orange Lutheran.

Orange Lutheran adds twins Xavier and Xavion Steele, junior transfers from Tahquitz.

The rubber hits the road this week as these games DO matter. League play is starting.
I am hoping only the El Segundo vs Beverly Hills game is not in doubt.
Lawndale is and should be heavily favored as they have shown themselves to be among the two league elites along with El Segundo.
Lawndale QB Chris Murray is likely the top athlete in the league and at 6'4" with 4.5 speed he is a handful for any defense. Culver City continues to improve and they have their own speed burners, including DB Mekhi Ware who has 9 interceptions on the year including 3 in one half plus a TD reception last week, but this is likely a big step up in competition level for Culver City. It will be an upset if Culver City pulls this one out.
It is almost shocking that Santa Monica vs Hawthorne has turned into a close contest. Santa Monica's drop in performance this year has been huge but they should still be able to muster enough talent to defeat Hawthorne who has some talent of their own but a roster with low numbers.

Santa Monica (0-3) has had some suprising losses this year, but usually to quality opponents. Culver City (1-2) may be on the rise as their sophomore QB gains experience every week. Hawthorne (0-3) & Beverly Hills (0-3) are still struggling and will not compete for a playoff spot. The first place finisher should be able to get to the second round of the playoffs, but no promises for anything else out of the league this year.

1. (1) Mission Viejo (6-0) MV stayed undefeated by cruising past Redondo, winning 35-16. Mission gets two weeks to prepare for Dana Hills (0-5) on Oct 9

2. (3) Tesoro (4-1) Tesoro stayed the course and beat CDM 45-31 on Thursday night. Solid matchup this week as Tesoro hosts San Clemente (4-1)

3. (4) San Juan Hills (5-0) The top 3 teams are form the SCL as SJH showed they are deserving of their ranking after blowing past previous #5 Los Al, 54-26. Next: Beckman (2-2)

4. (2) Vista Murrieta (3-1) VM ran into a tough Trinity team in O Lu and were beaten 29-14. It doesn't get any easier this week for VM as they once again are on the road. Next: @ St. Augustine SDS (4-1)

5. (6) Rancho Cucamonga (4-1) It was the Aaron Manning show as RC got it in gear after being tied 14 - 14 in the second quarter. RC scored 38 unanswered points in route to a 59-21drubbing of La Serna. RC looked pretty good as they seemed to clean up the penalties. Next: Oct 9 Damien (2-2)

Kaiser High School has changed a lot this season!! The tradition of run first and often has changed! The offense has opened up and the uptempo is great to see!! I think we ran 80 plays against San G with a big win! Nothing seem to work against Cajon until the second half, but seeing my son run and catch the ball was exciting! Last night against Valley View we saw a second half explosion for 30 unanswered!! 1st half refs were allowing subs when we are in no huddle, which slowed us down, but things got rolling!!

Defense is always solid, but going against the spread everyday has made us better!! If you know the tradition of Fontana football and the run game, you will be happy to see a great mix of new and old!! I love the uniforms and stickers on the helmets! Zelaya and company are doing great things and we'll be ready for another Sunkist title run!! It will again come down to week 9 with us v Summit who has some great players, should be a great match up of mike and joes vs X's and O's!! Come out and watch an uptempo game and a ton of offense and Kaiser's awesome coaching!! So proud to have my son be a senior at Kaiser with this group of coaches!!
