Football: Here's Oregon's reflections on a trio of Mater Dei visitors over the weekend and a 2026 visitor form Oaks Christian

From our Rivals Oregon staff:

This was just a chance for Nasir Wyatt to solidify his relationships and to get to see the staff again. He has been to Eugene many times and the Ducks have seemed like the team to beat for a while. This shows, though, that the staff take nothing for granted. They are continuing to recruit Wyatt as if he were a long shot because they feel he is a difference maker at linebacker and they want to be sure to let him know how important he is to them for this class.

Players like Marcus Harris gushed over the chance to play in an offense that likes to take chances, get the ball into their playmakers hands and score a lot of points. Harris has a top five of Oregon, Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee and Texas. The Ducks are the team closest to home and are making a strong move to land the Mater Dei standout. There is still a lot of work to do, but Harris loved the atmosphere Saturday.

The Ducks hosted the Duo of running backs yesterday and might still be on the outside looking in for both of them. Having Jordon Davison on campus shortly after the prior running back coach left for Ohio State and a bunch of predictions flooded for the Mater Dei running back to head to Columbus was important.

There were a few elite 2026 targets at the game as well. It is very early in the process for all of these guys and some are longshots. One was CB Davon Benjamin (Oaks Christian).

Breaking news: is safety Peyton Woodyard (St. John Bosco) seriously considering transferring back to the west coast?

From our Oregon Rivals staff:

Peyton Woodyard is indeed coming to Oregon for a visit this weekend. Earlier in the spring portal window, we hinted that Oregon was a strong contender for Jacoby Mathews – and that was true at the time. But when word started to get around that Woodyard was considering transferring back to the west coast, the staff had a preference for the true freshman over Mathews and held off on pushing for the Texas A&M transfer. It looks like that is going to pay off.

How good can Woodyard be? He was running with the twos at Alabama after just a few months on campus. Much of the defensive philosophy and terminology he initially learned is similar to Dan Lanning’s defense so that transition should be smooth, and I would suspect he would push for significant playing time the moment he arrives. As a high school prospect my thoughts were that Woodyard, a former four-star recruit, demonstrates natural talent as a safety, excelling in all facets of the game.

Operating within a defensive scheme that demands versatility, he adeptly covers ground both in pass coverage and run support. His impressive range allows him to patrol the backfield effectively, showcasing his athleticism with plays stretching from sideline to sideline. Woodyard's tackling skills are solid; he exhibits a willingness to engage in run support, demonstrating consistency in wrapping up opponents and rarely faltering in one-on-one situations

Not only does he excel on the field, but he also possesses leadership qualities that command respect from his peers. Off the field, his dedication is evident, showcasing a work ethic that hints at future captaincy at the collegiate level. While Woodyard dabbles in baseball, his focus on football for college suggests a commitment to further honing his skills in pursuit of excellence. He would be an exceptional addition for Oregon and I think that this one probably ends by the end of this weekend.

"Faking being fouled" addressed in 2024-25 High School Basketball Rules Changes

A new definition and subsequent warning for faking being fouled has been added to the NFHS Basketball Rules Book for the 2024-25 season.

This revision to high school basketball rules was approved by the NFHS Basketball Rules Committee at its April 9-11 meeting in Indianapolis. All recommended changes were subsequently approved by the NFHS Board of Directors.

Faking being fouled is defined in Rule 4-49-1 as when a player simulates being fouled or makes theatrical or exaggerated movements when there is no illegal contact.

Examples include, but are not limited to, embellishing the impact of incidental contact on block/charge plays or field goal attempts, using a “head bob” to simulate illegal contact and using any tactic to create an opinion of being fouled to gain an advantage.

The new language also establishes a procedure for officials to issue a team warning on the first instance of faking being fouled. The warning is recorded in the scorebook and reported to the head coach. Any additional instances will result in a team technical foul and not a player technical foul, which was previously the case.

“(The committee) is hoping to get those dishonest acts out of the game,” said Billy Strickland, the executive director of the Alaska School Activities Association and chair of the Basketball Rules Committee.

Minnesota has recently offered several 2026 football prospects in California from NorCal to Ventura

The Minnesota coaching staff has been busy with visits on the west coast to check out recruiting targets and now has offered the following prospects:

QB Derek Garcia (Ventura) - it was the third offer for Ventura native Derek Garcia who also has offers from Arkansas and UNLV. He threw for 948 yards and 11 touchdowns as a junior in 11 games, completing 74-of-129 passing attempts. He also had 100 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 10 carries.

WR Cynai Thomas (Archbishop Riordan)
LB Chase Cahoon - (Mountain View St. Francis)
ATH Sefanaia Alatini - (Mountain View St. Francis)
ATH Perrion Williams - (Mountain View St. Francis)

Notre Dame not giving up on LB Madden Faraimo (JSerra)

Per our Notre Dame Rivals staff:

Head coach Marcus Freeman’s motto of “choose hard,” may need to resonate with Madden Faraimo if Notre Dame is going to land him. The easy choice for the San Juan Capistrano (Calif.) JSerra Catholic product would be to commit to USC. Proximity and family connections to the school would make the Trojans a convenient option.

But every time Faraimo visits Notre Dame, it seems to resonate with him and remind him of the possibilities the Irish can bring him. Maybe his third time on Notre Dame’s campus, an official visit starting June 9, will convince him to make that leap. With the way Notre Dame’s recruited linebackers under Freeman, it’s hard to bet against the Irish.

Though this may turn into a USC-Notre Dame battle, Oregon and Ohio State are also in Faraimo’s final four. Faraimo doesn’t seem to love the recruiting process, so a summer decision would seem to make a lot of sense before his senior season.

Can Notre Dame close the deal with LB Madden Faraimo (JSerra) over favorite USC? Here's their latest thoughts...

Per our Rivals Notre Dame staff:

Previous visit: June 9, 2023; April 14, 2024
Upcoming visit: June 7-9 (OV)

Heat check (4/30): Faraimo’s recruitment remains relatively quiet for a linebacker with a top four of Notre Dame, Ohio State, USC and Oregon. The Irish really like what they’ve seen from Faraimo and continue to carry some confidence in his recruitment following his recent visit.

The goal was to get Faraimo to fall in love with Notre Dame again, and that might have happened. However, it’s not going to be easy trying to pull the California product away from USC.

The Irish may need to continue to win over Faraimo’s mother, who made the last trip with him. Faraimo is expected to make a June 7-9 official visit to Notre Dame.

Notre Dame football coaches hit road to SoCal for contact period, 4/26. See who they're checking out.

Wide Receivers coach Mike Brown is expected to spend the day in California checking out 2026 wide receivers like Trent Mosley at Rancho Santa Margarita Catholic, Ja'Myron Baker at Los Alamitos, Brandon Arrington at La Mesa Mount Miguel and Madden Williams at Bellflower St. John Bosco.

Three of them have Notre Dame offers: Mosley, Arrington and Williams. Baker is committed to USC.

Oregon is working hard for the commitments of recent visitors CB Chuck McDonald (Mater Dei) and DL Josiah Sharma (Folsom).

Per our Rivals Oregon writers:

The Ducks did a great job with Chuck McDonald on his recent visit and have done a lot to get in a better position than they were a month ago. If you ask now, I would still say a lean to USC, but the Ducks have made up some ground.

Oregon offered Folsom (CA) defensive lineman Josiah Sharma in February and have been working very hard since then to establish and strengthen relationships with the 6-5, 295-pound standout.

Oregon recently hosted him for an unofficial visit and I know he came away impressed with everything that the Ducks offer on and off the field. The three-star has Alabama, Miami, Oklahoma, Texas, Washington, and Utah in his top seven along with Oregon.

The Ducks are working on getting an official visit set up. Wil let you know when that happens.

Ohio State has just offered Oaks Christian RB Deshonne Redeaux. His comments inside...

Per our Rivals Ohio State staff:

On Tuesday coach Carlos Locklyn offered sophomore tailback Deshonne Redeaux. Redeaux has clocked a personal best of 10.42 in the 100. He's scraping 6-foot tall and is just about 180 pounds. The Oaks Christian (Westlake Village, Calif.) standout is the No. 6-ranked 2026 tailback and he's had a relationship with Locklyn for a while now.

"He's been my guy since he was at Oregon," Redeaux told us. "Coach Lock now being at Ohio State, it's a powerhouse school and I'm a big fan."

Nebraska says two California prospects are among those most likely to commit during the spring football game weekend or shortly after.

Per our Rivals Nebraska writing staff:

"As far as prospects most likely to commit during the spring game or shortly after, if I had to pick three [two are from CA], here's who I feel good about where Nebraska stands with them heading into the weekend.

None of the three have a concrete timeline and could push decisions into the summer in order to take more official visits, but Nebraska's at or near the top for all three."

The two California prospects are QB TJ Lateef (Orange Lutheran) and OT John Mills (St. Ignatius).

San Diego Athletes in MILB, MLB and High School

Pittsburgh Pirates 2 Milwaukee Brewers 1 Poway alum Connor Joe 1 single 1 rbi for Pittsburgh.

Colorado Rockies 7 San Diego Padres 4 Cathedral Catholic alum Sean Bouchard

Gwinnett Stripers 9 Norfolk Tides 4 LaCosta Canyon alum Phil Evans 1 walk 1 run scored for Gwinnett. Christian alum Kyle Stowers 1 single 1 run scored for Norfolk.

Eugene Emeralds 6 Hillsboro Hops 2 Torrey Pines alum Kevin Sim 1 single 1 run scored for the Hops.

Reading Fightin Phils 10 Somerset Patriots 4 LaCosta Canyon alum Spencer Jones 1 home run for the Pats

St. Paul's Saints 15 Rochester Red Wings 9 Helix alum DeShawn Keirsey 1 double 1 triple 1 run scored 3 rbi's.

New York Yankees 4 Oakland A's 3 Poway alum Tyler Nevin 2 singles for the A's.

Sacramento River Cats 14 Las Vegas Aviators 1 Eastlake alum Casey Schmidt 2 doubles 2 rbi's and 2 runs scored.

Four-star safety Jadyn Hudson (Pittsburg) checks out UCLA ahead of his official visit. Here's his reaction.

Jadyn Hudson is ranked 61st overall nationally and sixth at his position and he'll be back at UCLA for an official visit May 31 to June 2. Here's what he had to say per Adam Gorney following his Friday Night Lights visit, "What stood out to me was how everyone wants to make a change in UCLA and coach Foster is really taking steps to make that change happen. The overall feel was great. I had a great time. Good people at UCLA."

Read how visits to Notre Dame went for Californians LB Madden Faraimo, CB Brandon Lockhart, and CB RJ Sermons

Per our Rivals Notre Dame writers:

I can’t stress enough how high Notre Dame’s coaching staff is on Madden Faraimo. I think he’d be the ideal finish to the position for the Irish, even though there are some other highly ranked options in that conversation too.

Notre Dame believes it killed the visit and allowed Faraimo to fall in love with Notre Dame again. Faraimo made the visit alongside his mom, which is an important voice in his recruitment.

USC is likely the top competition for the California product. If Faraimo can get over the distance hurdle, he may very well end up at Notre Dame.

USC commit Brandon Lockhart made his first visit to Notre Dame, and it seems clear that he’s open to going elsewhere. The Irish aren’t the only ones that are trying to get him to do so. But this visit opened his eyes to what Notre Dame could do for him, I’m told.

RJ Sermons is another California product who’s entertaining the idea of leaving the West Coast. Even though his father, Rodney Sermons, played running back at USC, he’s not necessarily a lock to become a Trojan. A source told me that Notre Dame “blew away expectations” for Sermons on his visit.

Nebraska is optimistic with their chances for QB TJ Lateef and OT John Mills

Per our Rivals Nebraska writers:

Here's a look at two names that could be next to join Nebraska's 2025 class:

Orange (Cali.) Lutheran four-star quarterback TJ Lateef is Nebraska's top target at the position and is making an official visit for the spring game later this month. The Huskers are battling Colorado for his commitment, with schools like Arizona, Auburn and Ole Miss also lurking in the mix.

Lateef's recruitment is trending towards coming down to the Cornhuskers and the Buffaloes. Matt Rhule and Glenn Thomas have Nebraska trending here heading into his official visit. Could experiencing a "game day" atmosphere at Memorial Stadium be enough for Lateef to shut his recruitment down?

San Francisco (Cali.) St. Ignatius three-star offensive lineman John Mills made an unofficial visit to Nebraska earlier this month and will return for the spring game on an official visit. The Huskers are battling Texas and Washington for the gargantuan 6-foot-6, 315 pound lineman, with the Longhorns in particular looking like a threat.

Still, the fact Nebraska will get him on campus twice in a month is telling of their position with Mills. He's got official visits planned to Austin and Seattle in late May and June, with schools like USC and Florida also in the mix to receive a visit.

However, it's not uncommon for recruits to commit before taking all their official visits and cancel future visit plans. Nebraska's been on the wrong end of that a couple times this 2025 cycle, this could be an opportunity to turn the table.

Lots of changes in the coaching ranks

Here's some excerps we picked up from Eric Sondheimer, LA Times:

Daniel Barlage is the new football coach at Norco. He had been an assistant at Riverside City College.

Former L.A. Roosevelt football coach Jose Casagran came out of retirement to become coach at Monrovia.

The Oxnard Unified School District had five openings for football coaches and announced all five Friday.

Hueneme is getting former Sherman Oaks Notre Dame offensive coordinator Jake Goossen-Brown, who won a Southern Section title as coach at Morro Bay and had the leading quarterback in the Mission League last season at Notre Dame.

Oxnard named alumnus Lonnie McCowan as its coach. He was an assistant coach at Ventura College.

Del Sol, a new school set to open, hired Hueneme assistant James Nelson, who played at Buena, Ventura College and Texas El Paso.

Channel Islands hired Rashad Dunn, who coached last season in Georgia.

Camarillo promoted offensive coordinator Nate Anderson, who was a top assistant to retiring Jack Willard.
