Rancho Bernardo defeats Mission Hills

By David A. Willauer-Contributing Writer
Mission Hills High School-San Marcos, CA
Rancho Bernardo High School improved their record to 6-0 and honored one of their late former assistant football coaches in Gary Stempson as they defeated the 4-2 Grizzlies of Mission Hills by a 34-20 score.

The Broncos jumped jumped out to a 7-0 lead on an Anthony Walsh interception for 37 yards. The Grizzlies came back to tie the game at 7-7 as QB John Tuttle (17 completions out of 35 attempts for 285 yards) threw a 8 yard pass to Sam Cooke.

The Broncos went ahead 14-7 on a Christian Lewis (7 completions out of 15 attempts for 108 yards) 21 yard pass to Malcolm Ross Turner (8 receptions for 79 yards).

The Grizzlies came back on 2 Eric Cavatano field goals of 40 yards to make it 14-13.

In the fourth quarter, the Broncos scored 2 more touchdowns by Kaelan Pistano of 1 and 25 yards to take a 27-13 lead.

Mission Hills last touchdown came as Tuttle threw his second touchdown pass of 80 yards to Christian Esqueda (9 receptions for 71 yards).

Milan Grice (29 carries for 132 yards rushing) scored the clinching touchdown on an 8 yard run to make the final score Rancho Bernardo 34 Mission Hills 20.

Rancho Bernardo Head Football Coach Tristan McCoy: " I'm proud of our kids right now. We knew this was our big game. We circled it on our schedule and have prepared for it all year."

"Coming into the game today we had 2 injuries 1 to my starting qb and 1 to my starting tackle. I challenged the kids to think of a way to defeat Mission Hills which has an outstanding caliber program. I'm proud of how we played" said Coach McCoy.

"When we led 14-13 it was a back and forth game as the offense did well, and I am proud of our defense on how we played. We got our first pick six in the first period, we made some special team goofs but we just had to play our game."

"Milan Grice is a warrior, is physical and runs hard."

"The late Gary Stempson who passed away of cancer last weekend was a true Bronco. He opened the school back when I played there. He coached the freshman team and was a super loyal Bronco fan."

Rancho Bernardo will host Vista on Friday October 14th at 7:00 pm while Mission Hills will host La Costa Canyon on Friday kickoff is at 7:00 pm.

Culver City, the Ocean League and Division 11

The rubber really hits the road for a lot of teams this week in that a lot of teams will be in league play this week. And while great preleague results are nice, the way the CIF has structured playoffs, it still matters where you finish in league. Culver City (3-2) had an easy victory over modest LA City school University, winning 35-7, a couple of weeks ago, but had to take on the much more formidable LA City Dorsey Dons last week. Dorsey was projected as the better team and looked it, except for turnovers. Dorsey's penchant for fumbles plus an interception returned for a TD kept Culver in the game threatening to steal the win late in the 4th quarter, but Dorsey was able to deny Culver when it mattered most. Dorsey clearly dominated the line of scrimmage and would have won handily without the turnovers.

Culver moves on to league play but things don't get any easier as they face the projected league champion El Segundo Eagles (5-0). El Segundo projects as an even better team than Dorsey. El Segundo is led by senior star running back Taz Tauaese who is averaging more than 130 yards a game and Culver struggled to contain the running against Dorsey. If Tauaese is healthy, this will be tough game to win. Culver counters with their potent passing offense averaging 288 yards a game and sometimes running that quick pace no huddle. A loss to El Segundo will not be a deathblow for Culver being it is the first league game, but ups the importance of the remaining 4 games in which they are likely to be favored.
The rest of the Ocean League has Hawthorne (1-4) at Beverly Hills (0-5) in what is likely the determiner of the last place team.
The other interesting game has Santa Monica (3-2) at Lawndale (2-3). Despite the records, Lawndale is a clear favorite in this one, but there is some bad blood between the two programs as former Santa Monica coach Travis Clark is now in his second year as head coach at Lawndale and several Santa Monica players somehow found their way to Lawndale last year. Lawndale ended up getting penalized for illegal transfers as some paperwork was not done properly. Santa Monica looks a little improved from last year and if they play with a chip on their shoulder, this could get interesting. Santa Monica used to be the perenniel power in the Ocean League so it is a surprise to see them struggling so much. The question is, will that continue or are they on the mend? A dominating victory by Lawndale means that they will challenge Culver for the likely 2cnd place position.
In Division 11, the CIF polls have Katella (5-0) at number one, and probably deservedly so. They will probably be unchallenged in league. Their problem is they are not gonna see any teams that are as good as the other top 8 teams that make the playoffs from this division. Arcadia has the highest power ranking according to calpreps.com, but it is unsure if they will even make it to the playoffs out of the Pacific Division. Their cautionary #9 ranking is justified. #2 Ramona (4-0-1) will probably fall to third place in league but that will likely still get them into the playoffs, but their power rating says they may make an early exit, whomever they face, in the playoffs.
#3 CreanLutheran (5-1) is playing Freelance. Their schedule has been soft except for a 35-7 spanking given to them by Aquinas (5-0). They should lose at least 2 of their last 3 after another easy game this week, against St. Monica (2-3). If they lose all 3 of their remaining after Friday, and that could happen, as Maranatha (2-2-1) appears to be a team close in capability, I wonder if that might affect their reputation come time to select playoff teams.#4 Oak Park (4-1) is still in non-league play because they play in the 4 team Canyon League. They are favored to win league. The biggest problem I see for them is that while they have a couple of powerful teams on their schedule, the rest were pretty week. There were no teams at about even strength with what they will face in league and so they have not had many close contests. Still, losing to El Segundo by just 11 points is kind of impressive. Simi Valley and Agoura are the most likely league opponents to have a shot at upsetting Oak Park. Culver City has the number 5 CIF ranking. They will need to make sure that they take care of business in the rest of league, even if they lose El Segundo, and that would get them into the playoffs against competition in which they might excel.

Palomar defeats Chaffey 34-22

RANCHO CUCAMONGA (10-01-2016) -- The Comets are back in gear. After frustrating losses in three of four close games to open the season, Palomar hit host Chaffey with everything it had on the way to a 34-22 nonconference victory on Saturday night at Grigsby Field.

Coach Joe Early's squad jumped out to a 21-7 halftime lead by scoring on a 2-yard run by Josh Bernard, a 71-yard pass play from quarterback Matt Romero to Terrell Arnold and a 10-yard Romero-to-Robert Ursua pass.

After the Panthers answered with a third-quarter touchdown to pull to within seven points, the Comets counterpunched with two more touchdowns in a 20-second span early in the the fourth quarter to go back up by 20 points. LaMont Chaney's 32-yard run on an end-around play and an interception and 8-yard TD return by Malavai Taylor put Palomar in front 34-14 with 10:23 left in the game and made a later Chaffey touchdown basically irrelevant.

The Comets mixed the above with a punting clinic by Sam Tapia, who took over the game by controlling the teams' field position, and a spectacular defensive performance by safety Zach Gallina (13 tackles, 9 solo, a fumble recovery at the Chaffey 13 after Roger Mann knocked the ball loose, an interception at the Palomar 7 and 13-yard return, a forced fumble and back-to-back pass break-ups in the end zone).

Tapia deposited five more punts inside the 20-yard line, including chip shots that pinned the Panthers at the 7-, 6- and 3-yard lines. He boomed four 40-yard-plus punts, including a 56-yarder that knocked down the Panthers' Tarmas Stewart who backpedaled, backpedaled some more, then crashed backwards to the turf at his own 19-yard line when he finally caught the ball.

"This guy gave us field position time after time all night," Early said, pointing to Tapia. "That wins games."

The Comets' defense intercepted Chaffey quarterback Vincent Bowes four times, sacked him three times and broke up six passes. Besides Gallina's and Taylor's picks, Xzavier Crawford intercepted Bowes at the Palomar 1-yard line and Dominique Love provided the other interception at the Comets' 13. He returned the ball out to the 20.

The sacks were provided by Mann (for 10 yards), Nako Te'i (for 6 yards) and Christian Prince (for 6 yards). Prince also had two of the pass break-ups (the others came courtesy of Gallina, Michael Moore, Crawford and Nate Johnson). And, late in the game, Prince separated the ball from a Chaffey receiver, who had just caught a pass and was starting to head up the Palomar sideline, with a violent hit. The ball shot into the air and out-of-bounds, followed by the Chaffey receiver.

Hunter Turner, Mann, Te'i, Mickey Sega, Austin Alualu and Prince combined for seven tackles for loss for 52 yards. Mann had 1.5 tackles for loss for 19 yards and Turner contributed 2 for 10 yards.

Issiah Augero contributed two kickoff returns of 35 and 34 yards. Romero was 12-for-24 passing for 167 yards, included five completions to Ursua. And Patrick Koch, who kicked a 51-yard field goal last week, sent his first three kickoffs through the end zone for touchbacks. Koch did miss an extra point for the first time this season, going 4-for-5. Tapia, the holder, took the blame for the miss.

Palomar gets a bye next week and will open Southern Conference play the following Saturday night, Oct. 15, at home at Wilson Stadium in Escondido against Orange Coast.

Ace Roach's 3 touchdown pass paces Rancho Buena Vista to 42-38 win

By David A. Willauer-Contributing Writer-
Wilson Field at Rich Embry Field-Escondido High School-Escondido, CA:

The Longhorns of Rancho Buena Vista (2-3, 1-0) snapped a 2 game losing streak in a hard-battled contest as they defeated Escondido High School (1-4, 0-1) in a high scoring 42-38 shootout.

Longhorn QB Ace Roach had 11 completions out of 22 attempts for 136 yards, threw 2 touchdown passes of 23 and 6 yards to Trent Borger (2 receptions for 29 yards) and had another 1 touchdown pass of 23 yards. Anthony Bowman had 14 carries for 71 yards, including 2 touchdown runs of 2 and 1 yard.

"Tonight's game vs. Escondido was a good high scoring contest; the game started out in our favor at first and started to get nerve racking as some of our people got hurt along with playing people out of position but we survived." said Rancho Buena Vista Coach Joe Meyer.

"Escondido's offense is real balanced; they scored some points on the board but my running back Anthony Bowman is a warrior and helped our squad out on both sides of the football. We made him a linebacker on the 1 yard play we call our Stampede which is our shortage offense. The kids came over and we ran the play after an injury to our regular wing back who was out but we had to put kids at wing back and we coached him in the time this is a 3 yard offensive play." said Coach Meyer

"Our defense is very inexperienced, especially in our secondary - we have 4 of our regular defensive backs out and we are starting 4 new backs that are filling in - they are all juniors." said Coach Meyer.

"We play San Clemente next at our place; their squad is big up front and their quarterback is the best in the state. We are going to be thin after this game and after Monday we want to see now many kids are ready to play."

The Cougars scored their plays on a Luis Flores 31 yard field goal, Kellen McCoy (16-33-3) threw a 9 yard pass to Miguel Rocha, a 64 yarder to Quinton Gaudett, (3 receptions for 138 yards) along with a 45 yarder to Bryan Jackson (4 receptions for 91 yards).
