Ira Lee cuts college list to three: he's Pac-12 bound

Per Eric Bossi, Rivals.com National Recruiting Director:

"Four-star power forward Ira Lee, ...the No. 59 ranked prospect in the class of 2017 is down to an all Pac-12 final three of Arizona, California and Oregon.

Currently rehabbing from post summer shoulder surgery, the 6-foot-7 power forward at Santa Monica (Calif.) Crossroads is a bouncy, high-volume rebounder who plays above the rim in transition and has a great motor.

Lee has scheduled official visits to all three of his finalists and he'll take his first trip this weekend when he checks out California. After that he'll see Oregon the weekend of Oct. 7 and Arizona on Oct. 14..."

Palomar Falls to Cerritos 21-17

Palomar's comeback falls four points short
NORWALK (9-17-2016) -- Palomar, trailing by two touchdowns at the half, saw a fourth-quarter comeback fall just short on Saturday night at Falcon Stadium as the Comets dropped a non-conference football game to Cerritos 21-17.

Most of Palomar's success in the opening half came with the Falcons leading 7-0 when Wes Fonoti blocked a Cerritos field goal attempt with 5:39 left in the first quarter and Dominique Love scooped up the ball and returned it 56 yards for a touchdown. Patrick Koch kicked the PAT and the teams were tied 7-7.

Cerritos led 21-7 at halftime after a pair of Nick Michell touchdown runs in the second period when the game's momentum changed and the Comets scored twice in the fourth quarter, on Josh Bernard's 12-yard touchdown run and Koch's 45-yard field goal, which came with 3:32 left in the game.

The Comets outscored the Falcons 10-0 over the game's final 30 minutes and 53 seconds and attempted to get the ball back with an onside kick following the field goal for a final attempt to win it. But Cerritos quickly called timeout, negating any surpise, and this time Koch kicked off deep to the 5-yard line, from where Landon Jones returned it 22 yards out to the 27.

Palomar never got the ball back as the Falcons controlled the ball for the game's last 3:27, during which time the Comets used their last two timeouts.

"We did some good things to try to come back, but we have to play four quarters and, until we can do that, we're not gong to be the kind of team we want to be," coach Joe Early said.

Palomar's top offensive effort came from tight end Robert Ursua, who ran over Cerritos defenders twice as he caught four passes from Matt Romero for 43 yards.

Along with the blocked field goal and touchdown return, the Comets got strong defensive efforts from Malavai Taylor who intercepted a pass in the end zone and contributed 6 tackles, Zack Gallina (12 tackles), Christian Prince (9 tackles, 1.5 for a loss) and Brad Dozier, Hunter Turner and Nako Te'i who had 6 tackles each.

Punter Sam Tapia pinned the Falcons inside the 20-yard line three times, at the 6, 19 and 14-yard line. He also had kicks of 47 and 43 yards.

Palomar will try to even its record at 2-2 next Saturday when the Comets host Moorpark in another non-conference game at Escondido's Chick Embrey Field at Wilson Stadium, Kickoff will be at 6 p.m.

Max Shiffer's 3 touchdown performances paces 4-0 Oceanside to win over San Marcos

Max Shuffer's 3-touchdown performance paces 4-0 Oceanside to 31-14 win over San Marcos

By David A. Willauer-Contributing Writer-Excalibur Field-San Marcos High School
-San Marcos, CA: In a battle of 2 ranked teams in the San Diego High School Football scene, the Pirates of Oceanside High School on Tevin Meadow's (20 carries 100 yards rushing) scored on a 1 yard run to take a 7-0 lead.

After the Knights tied the score 7-7 on Bryce Bolin's pass of 23 yards to Kyle Phillips, the Pirates on Max Shuffer's (7 carries for 20 yards) 2 touchdown runs of 1 and 3 yards along with Jake Gerardi's 37 yard field goal put Oceanside up 24-7.

"San Marcos is a a very coachable squad and is building their tradition here with Coach Tinsler and his staff. They're doing a good job and are a playoff championship contender" said Head Coach Dave Rodriguez. "They belong in the envelope and tonight's game was a battle. We are thankful to the win the game tonight and will find out about one of my injured players in Tanner Schaul and hopefully will find out some good news if he is going to be able to play." said Coach Rodriguez

"Max Shuffer showed up tonight and made very big plays for us, chewing up the clock after the interceptions and the turnovers. He (Max) got the ball in the end zone. When the team is in the huddle, Max is our team leader and the field general. He did a good job and gave us the win with the 2 runs." said Dave Rodriguez.

Julian Hicks (1 reception for 16 yards) scored the other Pirate touchdown as he caught a 16 yard pass from Shuffer (9 completions out of 22 attempts for 171 yards 1 interception).

The Knights scored their last touchdown as Bryce Bolin (16 completions out of 37 attempts for 236 yards and 1 interception) threw a 90 yarder to Kyle Phillips (5 receptions for 138 yards) for a touchdown.

St. Paul and Riv. Notre Dame must forfeit two games because of their fight

Here's the CIF press release:

LOS ALAMITOS -- After completing the investigation of the St. Paul-Riverside Notre Dame football game last Friday night, which included reviews of video, written reports from the game officials and statements from both schools it is has been determined that both schools will forfeit that contest.

Additionally, due to the fact each school will be without the minimum required number of players to compete in their next contests, those games will be forfeits as well.

Evidence gathered makes it clear that this game was ended due to multiple violations of CIF Southern Section Bylaw 1927 which states, “Any player who leaves the confines of the bench area during a fight that has broken out or may break out will be ineligible for the team’s next contest.

We have a zero tolerance policy for incidents such as this one and there will be no winners when they do occur,” stated Commissioner of Athletics Rob Wigod.”

Matt Romero's 2 touchdown passes keys Palomar JC to first win

Matt Romero’s 2 touchdown passes keys Palomar to first win

By David A. Willauer-Chick Embry Field-Escondido High School-Escondido, CA-Saturday, September 10, 2016: In a see saw game that was loaded with qb passing and interceptions for both schools the Palomar Comets jumped out to a 21-0 lead on Malavai Taylor’s 29 yard interception return, Matt Romero’s 51 yard pass to Comet teammate Lamont Chaney (5 receptions for 73 yards) and Jordan Morris’ 7 yard run.

The Corsairs of Santa Monica College came within 7 at 21-14 as Brock Raggio threw his first of two touchdown pass to receiver Conor McMahan for 15 yards along with a Freddie De La Cruz’s 13 yard interception return.

The Comets on Matt Romero’s (20 completions out of 33 attempts for 244 yards) connected his second touchdown pass to teammate Robert Ursua (4 receptions for 50 yards) for 14 yards to go up by a 35-14 score.

Santa Monica JC came back as Kwame Duggins 2 carries for 30 yards scored on a 26 yarder and qb Brock Raggio (28 completions out of 45 attempts for 366 yards) threw his second touchdown pass to teammate Conor McMahon (8 receptions for 92 yards) for 28 yards with two consecutive 2 point conversion were good to make the final score 35-30 in favor of Palomar.

Joe Early head football coach at Palomar: “After our loss last week vs. Southwestern we play better then what we did and discussed certain situations in our weekly practice it was good for our squad to jump out 21-0, but we fell into certain situations in which the penalties hurt us when our offense has trouble executing things weren’t good and experienced enough to overcome those types of situations I give a lot of credit to Santa Monica they were low on numbers but their squad kept fighting and didn’t quit.”

“When we led 21-14 our defense had problems executing and not making key tackles well, those are the issues that we have to look on film and to correct so when we go out on the practice field we have to work on them for us to improve each game.”In the second half we had a lot of key runs as quite a few of our players have stepping up for us in our running backs Isaiah Auger and Currie Thompson as they moved the ball well on the ground that was good to see to close the game out.” said Coach Early.

“When we got a first and goal at the 4 and our offense couldn’t get in that is something of the issues that we will address in practice, we can’t give up 9 yard drives back to back with our defense this is not good to what our standards are but we will have to watch the film on qb Zack Romero he was a little disappointed that he missed some of the receivers threw high offensively we have some of our guys that are red shirts and gray shirts last year trying to get game experience, it is a learning things as long as we continue to get better every week we have a chance Cerritos is good squad they are big and tough I have known their staff for a long time we have to play them at their place it is going to be a physical game and we need to be ready for it.”said Coach Early

Other contributors to the game:

Palomar Issiah Augero 8 carries for 55 yards, Josh Bernard 12 carries for 43 yards

Santa Monica Khalil Miller 9 carries for 75 yards Darius Brown 5 receptions for 114 yards

With the win Palomar improves to 1-1 on the season and will travel to Cerritos College next Saturday night kickoff is at 6:00
