Sean Doyle on the win: "We came out and played a heck of a football team, Helix is a good squad our defense got stops on then that they needed to along with our offense, after the first couple of series they got themselves under control moved the ball well down 14-0 we did too much on the bootleg by Tate Haynes my qb that he threw the interception then he decided to do a lot of running with his legs he saw the receiver made the catch for the win."

"Running back Sean Poma is unreal and our offensive line did a good job opening up the holes for him and my Quarterback Tate Haynes has committed to Boston College makes things happen and will help the Eagles a lot when he graduates." said Coach Doyle

For Cathedral Catholic in the win Adam Eastwood carried the ball 20 times for 124 yards scored touchdown runs of 5 and 22 yards, qb Tate Haynes who committed to Boston College carried the ball 15 times to 119 yards scored touchdown runs of 2 and 58 yards passed 5 completions out of 7 attempts for 51 yards, Shawn Poma 12 carries for 161 yards scored touchdown run of 22 and 41 yards,

This is Coach Doyle second time that Cathedral Catholic finished undefeated and wins their 11th CIF Section Title and will host Narbonne High School in a CIF State Playoff Open Division Semi Final Game.

"We know that was part of the game but I didn't panic we had faith in our coaches and put out a game plan that is now we got the win." "I will give credit to Olympian they are a classy football squad I know a lot of the kids that go to that school." on the University of Oregon I love the ducks went there for an unofficial visit with my parents and then I committed

Cathedral Catholic defeats Mission Hills in San Diego Section CIF Semi

QB Tate Haynes paces Cathedral Catholic in win over Mission Hills-

By David A. Willauer-Contributing Writer-In an Open Division Semi Final Round of the CIF Sectional Football Playoff contest, the top seeded Dons of Cathedral Catholic defeated the Grizzlies at 7-5 of Mission Hills High School by a 44-21 score.

Chris Hauser Mission Hills Football Coach: "We weren't consistent enough on both sides of the ball as they scored 44 points on the board and they did much better then what we did." "We had an opportunity to get the right players in the game but we were hit with too many players on the field penalty."

"We moved the ball we fumbled on our short plays but our offensive line did well pass protecting which created a lot of problems for us when it came to open holes for the backs. " Jack Tuttle is a high level quarterback and does what he can and plays to the best of his ability." "Sam Dixon's first touchdown was the big play but in the second half Cathedral Catholic intercepted Jack Tuttle's pass but we have come a long ways started off we have 21 of our starters are new and Jack Tuttle improving a lot at qb along with an amazing 7-5 we put a magical game together vs. Oceanside the Grossmont game will be the big upset one on the ages these kids look on the season and hats off to them."

The Dons led 14-0 after the first period on Jordan Genmark Heath's 1 yard run along with Tate Hayes (7 completions out of 15 attempts for 108 yards) connected on his first of four touchdown passes of 24 yards to Antoine Lee (2 receptions for 39 yards) before Grizzly running back Sam Dixon 11 carries for 60 yards scored the first touchdown on an 8 yard run to go within 14-7. The Dons scored 2 more touchdowns to go up 27-7 on Tate Haynes' 2nd touchdown a 24 yarder to Patrick Brown (3 receptions for 64 yards) and his 3rd touchdown to Adam Eastwood on a 6 yarder before Grizzly qb Jack Tuttle 22 completions out of 39 attempts for 270 yards threw a touchdown pass to Mission Hills teammate Ian Fryday (4 receptions for 27 yards) for 13 yards to go within 27-14.

After the Dons scored 2 more touchdowns on Tate Haynes 9 yard pass to Jack Thompson along with a 27 yard field goal by Liam King, Mission Hills scored their last touchdown of the game as qb Jack Tuttle threw his second touchdown pass to Louis Flores( 3 receptions for 23 yards) for 16 yards to make the final score 44-21 in favor of Central Catholic.

Cathedral Catholic Coach Sean Doyle: "This is huge win for our squad today and after a 2 year wait of falling short in the CIF Section Semi Finals we finally achieved our goal by reaching the championship round," "Tate Haynes is a good player and his passes were outstanding along with Jordan Genmark Heath made a nice running pattern and tried to draw Mission Hills off sides they did a good job staying in the game."

"Two of Tate Haynes passes was he forced the ball too much and he took off running and made great decisions as in we have good athletes that they stepped up and were blessed ." Now we have to go to the drawing board on how we're going to prepare to play Helix for the second time." said Coach Doyle

Notes: This is the second time in the Cathedral Catholic went undefeated since 2008 Cathedral Catholic and Helix met the previous time on the Don's Field where Cathedral Catholic won 35-28.

San Marcos defeats Vista in Division I Quarter Final San Diego Section Game

By David A. Willauer-Contributing Writer

-Excalibur Field-San Marcos High School

In the opening round of the 2016 high school football season on August 26, 2016, head coach David Bottom made his debut at Vista and lost to the Knights of San Marcos by a 37-13 score at Dick Haines Stadium at Vista High School.

And today it was still the same story. The Knights jumped out to a 17-0 lead on Kyle Webb's fumble recovery in the end zone, Myles Liss's 20 yard field goal and a Colin Mathiszik 57 yard fumble recovery to go up 17-0.

The Panthers of Vista came back as quarterback Josh Davies (6 completions out of 10 attempts for 110 yards) threw an 82 yard touchdown pass to Carlos Rodriguez (2 receptions for 86 yards) and Nick Stormo (6 carries for 61 yards) scored on a 40 yard touchdown run to cut the Knight lead at 17-13. The PAT failed on the second touchdown.

San Marcos scored 2 more touchdowns as Bryson Bolin ran for a 10 yard touchdown while teammate Tylee Hodson scored on a 19 yarder to make the final score 31-13. Bolin ended up passing 10 completions out of 19 attempts for 180 yards and carrying the ball 6 times for 22 yards.

Tyler Rogers led the Knights in rushing with 26 carries for 112 yards.

Jason Texler Head Football Coach at San Marcos on the win: "Vista is a young athletic team. We started out well on defense but struggled on offense. However, our guys came back and got it done when Vista came within 4 at 17-13.

"Along with playing a ten game schedule, it is hard to play Vista the second time. They gave us quite a battle; I give credit to my players. Tyler Rogers, Josh Bornes and Bryson Bolin all did well today but this was a team effort."

With the win 4th seed San Marcos improve to 7-4 and will next take on the top seed Warhawks of Madison High School at 9-2 in a semi final round contest at Madison.

Culver City, the Ocean League and Division 11

I was disappointed, but not shocked by the result of the first round playoff game of Valley View at Culver City in Division 11. Valley View won 69-43.

Culver City has the dubious distinction of scoring the most points in an 11 man Southern Section first round game this year...and losing. To be sure, the game was entertaining, if you like offense. The Centaurs even led a couple of times, but turnovers (2 pick 6's) and at least one fumble were certainly their undoing. Had they avoided those, they might have gotten close enough to steal the win, but they were never gonna dominate Valley View.

That team was big, 3 guys over 300 lbs, plus Culver City only has one over 250. In the second half, the telltale drive was a 91 yard, 19 play drive taking over 9 minutes by Valley View in which they mostly ran it up the gut. Culver had guys leaping over the top of the pile, everyone in the box they could spare, but just could not stop that freight train. Valley View's 230 lb fullback, Rudy Lovato was too much for Culver to handle behind that big O-line. The Centaur QB threw for 456 yards, but Valley View ran for 483.

Valley View moves on to host Rancho Alamitos (7-4). Rancho should be able to handle the size a little bit better than Culver and also has an effective passer. Their receivers do not look as talented as the Culver squad and I think when all is added up that Valley View should be winning this one, particularly playing at home.

Katella managed to beat Westminster a second time this year. They host 29 Palms. I don't know enough to comment any further than the fact that 29 Palms is not rated any where near Katella, so I expect Katella to breeze to a semi-final.

Arcadia looks like they dominated Oak Park, but they must travel to Quartz Hill and I am still having trouble having much respect for Pacific league teams. I am picking Quartz Hill to win.

Montebello was picked to be one of the Division 11 favorites. They easily handled Coachella Valley 38-14 and are 8 point favorites over Covina who barely got by Victor Valley 18-17. Covina has home field, but I don't think that will be enough.

What about the rest of the Ocean League?

El Segundo survived a tight match against Canyon of Anaheim 17-10 in Division 7. Cupcake El Segundo gave up more than 19 points only once this season, 24, to high scoring Culver City. They are well coached. If they are healthy, they should feature alternating QB's, not every quarter or series but EVERY PLAY. Both guys are serviceable, I like #7 a little better but it is their fullback, #10, and #26 on defense that are most impressive. #26 is a stud.

They will prefer to run the ball but can pass effectively enough to keep you honest. #7 is willing to scramble for first downs too. Their main RB is a bit smallish, but tough & quick. The back-up is even smaller, but perhaps speedier. Golden Valley's advantage may be that they face teams this good all season. Nothing new to them. Speed and revenge are the only thing that defeated El Segundo (10-1) in their one loss this year, but they have not faced a team as highly rated as Golden Valley either. This is my planned game to attend.

The Ocean League's Lawndale also survived in Division 6 play, easily beating local foe West Torrance 48-14. Calpreps projects a high scoring 1 point edge for Summit. Summit, 42-41 winners over West Covina, does appear to have the size to counter Lawndale, and they will need it. But if you can stop the Lawndale run game, you have chance to stop them as their QB is an inconsistent passer.

Both teams look like they will feature star running backs. Lawndale's sophomore Jordan Wilmore is listed as the 7th leading rusher in the Southern Section. Their QB's numbers look better than what I saw when they played El Segundo.

Summit looks like they are all about #7 RB Stephen Carr. They don't show any stats on this young man, but the video is impressive, and the last name is the same as the leading rusher in the CIF, Kenneth Carr. Relation? Cousin? I would guess Lawndale will assign a specific player to him because he looks like a special gamebreaking college division 1 type player. Summit appears to just barely do enough with passing to keep teams from locking down too tight on Carr. I would expect that Carr & the Summit size to be enough for a Summit win.

Culver City, the Ocean League and Division 11

Ocean League wrap

Everything panned out pretty much as projected in the last week of the regular season. The three league favorites were able win their final games against the bottom 3 of the Ocean league. Culver City QB Jonathan Martin was 13 of 15 for 303 yards with 6 TD passes and no picks in a 63-8 win, but, it was poor little Beverly Hills they were playing. El Segundo beat Santa Monica 45-6 and Lawndale beat Hawthorne 54-6. 4th place finisher Hawthorne (2-3, 3-7) could not qualify in Division 12 with a losing record and there were no at-large playoff spots available. No at large spots were available in D-10 through D-13.

El Segundo (9-1), in D-7, drew a home game against Canyon of Anaheim (4-6). Canyon's record may not seem that impressive but it is a fairly strong league (Crestview). All 4 teams from that league qualified for the playoffs. El Segundo projects as a 4 point favorite with a possible score of 21-17.

Lawndale (6-4) also got a home game against a much more local opponent, West Torrance (7-3) in the Division 6 playoffs. The calpreps.com computer has Lawndale as 11 point favorites. I am not sure I agree. West is well coached. I saw them beat Culver City 34-33 in the opening game of the season. I think West might find a way to minimize the vaunted Lawndale running game and eek out a win.

Culver City (7-3) was lucky enough to get placed down in Division 11, but their first round opponent, Valley View of Moreno Valley (6-4) could be problematic. They have some good size on the O-line and Culver tends to struggle against ground & pound teams as Culver is not particularly big. Valley View also seems to have some speed. Perhaps more than your average Ocean league team, Calpreps.com is projecting a high scoring 40-34 Culver victory. I would be very happy with that.

Here are all the D-11 matchups:
