This week in the Ocean League

Upcoming Games
Fri 11/06 Beverly Hills (1-8, 1-3) at Culver City (6-3, 3-1), 7:00pm
projection: Culver City (CA) 48-20
Fri 11/06 Santa Monica (1-8, 1-3) at El Segundo (7-2, 2-2), 7:00pm
projection: El Segundo (CA) 38-7
Fri 11/06 Lawndale (4-5, 2-2) at Hawthorne (CA), 7:00pm
projection: Lawndale (3-6, 3-1) 48-6

Talk about things going topsy turvy. Lawndale looked like it had all but mathematically locked up the Ocean League title coming into this week but had to forfeit 2 league games and 2 more non-league games due to an illegal transfer from Santa Monica. Apparently several players transferred from Santa Monica while their Samo coach became the head coach at Lawndale. No improprieties have been found on the part of the coach nor most of the transfers, but one student transfer submitted false paperwork that was discovered during an attendance investigation. Lawndale now has forfeit losses to Culver City, and, ironically, Santa Monica. They are in danger of missing the playoffs if they don't beat Hawthorne this week but should still be heavily favored in the game because they have likely league MVP QB Chris Murray leading the charge.
Culver City finds themselves suddenly tied for first place with an easily winnable game against Beverly Hills to close out league and the regular season. With Hawthorne likely to fall to Lawndale, CC should find themselves atop the Ocean League standings as the legally undisputed champions of the Ocean League. That should help them get a better playoff seeding as well.
Hawthorne controls their own fate with a 3-1 league record but must face the best team in the league, on the field anyway, in Lawndale. While it is not known what the level of contribution the illegal transfer made to the team, it is known the team was still able to get two league wins, including a key one against El Segundo without the transfer causing the game to be forfeited.
Since Santa Monica has already lost to Beverly Hills, I would assume El Segundo should have enough to beat Samo even if their QB is still injured. But will a win be enough to get El Segundo to the playoffs? Both of the teams they could end up sharing second place with have head to head wins against them. I am not sure where that factors in to the final decision about league placement.

West Valley Division Rankings Week 10

Last week of the regular season.
There was a major upset in the Top 10 this week with Hart being shut out by Saugus, which may play a major role on playoffs pairings.

Who will be the at-larger team? El Toro will be 5-5 after this weeks win vs Dana Hills, but only 1-3 in league.
For us, the Foothill League scenarios are awesome. Love it, going to be interesting for sure, with a lot of scoreboard watching.

Why? Valencia (4-0) plays Hart (3-1) who just lost to the 'Gus, Golden Valley (2-2) plays Saugus (3-1). There is a possibility of a 3 way tie for second place with each team being 3-2. More interesting there could be 3 teams with 4-1 records. Now this is fun.

Baseline second place is up for grabs between Rancho Cucamonga and Upland. Can RC finally beat the Scots? or is more of the same. Game is at Upland.

SCL pits San Juan Hills at Tesoro winner takes second. We think the winner gets the #4 seed.

SWL has Great Oak at Murrieta Valley. After starting off 0-3 GO has won 5 of its last 6, the only loss was to Vista Murrieta. Are the 'Pack peaking at the right time? Murrieta Valley's two losses are from Rancho Cucamonga and Vista Murrieta.

1. (1) Mission Viejo (4-0 10-0) Mission went wire to wire in our Top 10 this year as they finished off their season defeating El Toro 39-20. Next: WVD first round playoffs.

2. (2) Vista Murrieta (4-0 8-1) In what was once a rivalry is no more as VM blasted Chaparral 55-10 to essentially win another SWL title. Next: Temecula Valley (0-4 4-5)

3. (3) Tesoro (2-1 7-2) The Titans had theyre bye week this past week to prepare for a pretty good San Juan Hills team. Winner takes second place and possible #4 seed for the playoffs. Next: San Juan Hills (2-1 8-1)

4. (4) Chino Hills (4-0 7-2) CH clinched at least a share of its first ever Baseline League title with a win over Damien, 35-20. At one though, CH trailed 20-14. Next: Etiwanda (1-3 3-6)

5. (6) Edison (4-0 6-3) Well so much for a rivalry game. Edison ripped Fountain Valley 33-7 to capture a share of the Sunset. Edison is looking pretty solid and may make some noise in the WVD playoffs. Next: Newport Harbor (2-2 4-5)

6. (7) San Juan Hills (2-1 8-1) San Juan Hills cruised past lowly Dana Hills 55-15 to set up a showdown for second place showdown against #3 Tesoro (2-1 7-2). Are the Stallions up for the challenge?

7. (8) Rancho Cucamonga (3-1 7-2) In another penalty marred game Rancho was able to defeat Etiwanda 38-24 to set up its annual show down with Upland (3-1 6-3). RC hasn't beat Upland since 2010. If there's a year, this could be the year.

8. (9) Murrieta Valley (3-1 7-2) MV crushed Temecula Valley 63-13. This week is for second place against a hot Great Oak (3-1 5-4) team.

9. (10) Upland (3-1 6-3) The U had no problem with Los Osos winning 38-7. Upland was up 38-0. This week is a big time game for the Scots as RC (3-1 7-2) comes to town. Looking forward to see how the freshman QB from Upland handles a pretty big game. Kid looks good.

10. (5) Hart (3-1 7-2) Man, what happened? Hart was shut out by Saugus 24-0. Guess that happens when you lose your starting QB and RB? Hart could be In danger of falling to third place or even as the 4th team from the Foothill with a loss this week and a Golden Valley victory over Saugus. Next: Valencia (4-0 6-3)

others:
Great Oak - getting hot at the right time?
Valencia - wins the Foothill outright with a win over Hart
Los Al - won their last 2. has Marina this week for its 3rd straight.

Rancho Cucamonga 38 Etiwanda 24

Rancho reaches the playoffs with its win over Etiwanda.
Give Etiwanda credit, they never quit.
Etiwanda's QB ran all over RC.
RC wasn't able to get a sack on him until late in the 4th qtr.
Matute and Manning in the 4th quarter led RC.
Seemed the defense was on the field all night.
Nice goal line stand too.
I usually don't rag on the officials, but this crew was, well...bad...
Next up Upland...

This week in the Ocean League

Upcoming Games
Fri 10/30 Santa Monica (0-8) at Beverly Hills (0-8), 7:00pm
projection: Beverly Hills (CA) 28-21
Fri 10/30 Hawthorne (3-5, 3-0) at Culver City (4-4, 1-2), 7:00pm
projection: Culver City (CA) 44-21
Fri 10/30 El Segundo (7-1, 2-1) at Lawndale (7-1, 3-0), 7:00pm
projection: Lawndale (CA) 35-20

Two big games this week. El Segundo vs Lawndale should have been for the outright league championship but Hawthorne muddied the outcome by shocking El Segundo 23-14 last week. Now ES is in survival mode. Another loss would have them teetering on missing the playoffs and putting their fate in the hands of the CIF selection committee for the playoffs. The status of the El Segundo starting QB is not known by this writer and if he is out, it will be difficult to achieve a victory against QB Chris Murray and Lawndale. I would call Murray the league MVP if I was voting. ES will still have the 2ncd most talented player in the league in RB Taz Tauese, but without a real QB to keep the focus off of him, it would be difficult to get a win.
Hawthorne vs Culver City should have been for third place but Hawthorne has a chance to seal up a 2cnd place finish with a victory over CC. Culver is probably the most dangerous (4-4, 1-2) team in the Western division but will have to depend on another solid game from their back-up QB Bryce Lewis-Wolfe. He has an outstanding supporting cast and that should help him. If CC does not turn over the ball 6 times like El Segundo did against Hawthorne, they should have a good shot at winning the game.
Past years would have had the Santa Monica vs Beverly Hills game as another SM crushing of BH, but not this year. SM is suffering without a legitimate QB and BH is actually favored by computer projection. Still some good athletes on SM and they could pull it out. It should be exciting for both teams to be in a game they feel they can win.

This week in the Ocean League

Upcoming Games
Fri 10/23 Hawthorne (2-5, 2-0) at El Segundo (7-0, 2-0), 7:00pm
projection: El Segundo (CA) 48-13
Fri 10/23 Beverly Hills (0-7, 0-2) at Lawndale (6-1, 2-0), 7:00pm
projection: Lawndale (CA) 52-6
Fri 10/23 Culver City (3-3, 0-2) vs Santa Monica (0-7, 0-2) at Santa Monica College (Santa Monica, CA), 7:00pm
projection: Culver City (CA) 42-20
The only two questions, of any significance, left in this league are: will El Segundo or Lawndale win the league championship. No answer to the first question tonight as both should win easily.
And, can Culver City come back from 0-2 to get to third place? Culver will have to win all three remaining games just to get to third and they still have to face Hawthorne, currently 2-0 in league. Step 1 is tonight against a team that they have had many league championship battles with, but Santa Monica has been struggling mightily this year. It looks like Culver should be able to win it easily, but there is an unknown factor. Culver's starting QB went down at the end of the third quarter in the 31-42 loss against El Segundo last week. That is bad news as he has been excelling for Culver. I do not know his status for tonight. The modestly good news for Culver fans is that they are still in better shape at QB than they were last year. Junior back-up Bryce Lewis-Wolfe did well under extremely tough circumstances last week, coming in cold at the end of the third quarter. He completed 7 of 10 passes for 66 yards and a TD, along with a game crushing INT, but the throw was a little forced at a time that it probably had to be forced, trailing, with the clock under 2 minutes. If the starter has not been available this week, then Lewis-Wolfe should be even more prepared than last week and with the way Santa Monica has been playing and the talent of the supporting cast at Culver, it should be enough to get the job done.

West Valley Divison Rankings Week 9

2 weeks left...wow
Seven teams clinched playoff spots.
The Sunset has a rivalry game this week that goes back to the ages. After years Edison - FV truly means something.
Mission just keeps rolling along.

1. (1) Mission Viejo (3-0 9-0) MV beat up previous #2 San Juan Hills on the road, 48-20 to secure at least a tie for the SCL championship. Next: @ El Toro (0-2 4-4)

2. (3) Vista Murrieta (3-0 7-1) VM clinched a playoff spot with a rout over Mesa 62-21. Whats to keep VM interested? Next: @ Chaparral (1-2 3-5)

3. (4) Tesoro (2-1 7-2) No feeling sorry for itself after losing a tough one to MV the previous week as the Titans hammered Dana Hills 68-7. Next: Bye

4. (7) Chino Hills (3-0 6-2) Beat RC check, beat Upland, check. Say what? CH moves into the drivers seat for the Baseline title after it defeated Upland 24-14. CH defense is looking real good. The Huskies shouldn't relax just yet. Next: Damien (1-2 4-4)

5. (6) Hart (3-0 7-1) did we not mention upset? well almost. Hart had to go to OT to beat Golden Valley 24-21. Not the most impressive performance by the Indians. Next: Saugus (2-1 4-4)

6. (8) Edison (3-0 5-3) Edison clinches a playoff birth with a 28-13 win over Huntington Beach. This week its for the Bell and it's a game that actually means something in one the biggest rivalries in Orange County. Next: Fountain Valley (3-0 6-2)

7. (2) San Juan Hills (1-1 7-1) SJH had their chance this week to show the division they had arrived. MV had other ideas as SJH lost 48-20. They'll win this week. Next: Dana Hills (0-2 0-8)

8. (9) Rancho Cucamonga (2-1 6-2) RC took care of rival Los Osos winning 34-7 in a game that wasn't even that close. RC had better not be looking ahead past this weeks opponent. Next: Etiwanda (1-2 3-5)

9. (10) Murrieta Valley (2-1 6-2) Nice rebound win for MV as they blew out Chaparral 49-17. They should secure a playoff spot this week and play for second the next. Next: Temecula Valley (0-3 4-4)

10. (5) Upland (2-1 5-3) Upland suffered its first league loss to Chino Hills, losing, 24-14. Could this be the first time in 5 years the U aren't Baseline champs? They'll take their frustrations out this week on Los Osos (0-3 3-5)

others:
Fountain Valley (3-0 6-2) Back to the future? The Barons have a shot to win the Sunset with a win over #6 Edison.
Valencia (3-0 5-3) clinched playoff spot
Great Oak (2-1 4-4) clinches a playoff spot with a win over Mesa

West Valley Week 3

Finally everyone's had a league game.
There should be teams clinching playoff birhs this week and there are still teams who desperately need a win.

Baseline:
Upland @ Chino Hills
Can CH finally beat Upland? or does Salter have Bechtels number.
This should be a great game. Winner is in the playoffs
I know there's one team actually rooting for upland this week.

Etiwanda @ Damien
Final home game for the Spartan seniors.
They both have to win.

Los Osos @ Rancho Cucamonga @ Chaffey College.
Apparently the Grizz got tired of being visitors on their home field, since they share it with RC.
Lot of politics involved in this crazy rivalry. Is Osos tired of being blown out on their own field by their hated rivals? Probably. These 2 also need a win. An Osos loss and its over, a RC loss and its likely over.

Foothill:
Saugus @ Canyon - A Saugus win puts them in position for a playoff spot.

Golden Valley @ Hart @ COC - imagine if there were an upset.

West Ranch @ Valencia - Valencia shouldn't have much trouble here. Clinches playoff spot

SCL:
Tesoro @ Dana hills - Tesoro rests its starters early in the 3rd.

Mission Viejo @ San Juan Hills - Biggest game in the history of SJH. Lets see how good they really are. winner is playoffs.

Southwestern:
Temecula Valley @ Great Oak - Even with a win its going to be tough for TV to reach the playoffs.

Chaparral @ Murrieta Valley - A Chappy win would be huge and likely get them in. MV needs to get this done tonight.

Mesa @ Vista - VM shouldn't have too much trouble tonight.

Sunset:
Edison @ Huntington Beach - nice rivalry game. Edison wasn't at all tested last week, while HB was upset in OT. Edison wins, theyre in.

Los Al @ Newport Harbor - whats going on over at LA? 5 straight losses?! a loss tonight theyre done. NHHS really needs to win tonight. They win, theyre in.

Fountain Valley @ Marina @ Westminster. - FV is in.

West Valley Divison Rankings Week 8

Great great games this past week.
MV come from behind win over Tesoro.
Chino Hills knocking off Rancho Cucamonga.
Upland with a big second half staved off Damien.
How about Los Al losing its fifth straight, this time losing to Fountain Valley
More great matchups this week too!!

1. (1) Mission Viejo (2-0 8-0) At point MV trailed Tesoro 23-10. A huge second half propelled MV to a 39-33 win. Next: # 2 San Juan Hills (1-0 7-0)

2. (3) San Juan Hills (1-0 7-0) SJH had a tough battle with El Toro and prevailed 40-36 on the road. This weeks game is rhe biggest in school history. Next: # 1 Mission Viejo (2-0 8-0)

3. (4) Vists Murrieta (2-0 6-1) VM left no doubt who is the leagues best team. VM routed upstart Murrieta Valley 35-7, behind the efforts of Kyle Williams and a stout defense. Next: Mesa (1-1 4-3)

4. (2) Tesoro (1-1 6-2) Tough loss for the Titans to # 1 MV. With a break or two Tesoro would be our # 1. Next:.Dana Hills (0-2 0-7)

5. (6) Upland (2-0 5-2) Upland was down at the half to Damien, but rallied with a huge second half, winning 41-27. With a win this week, Upland puts itself in the drivers for a 5th straight Baseline crown. Wont be easy though as # 7 Chino Hills (2-0 5-2) is waiting.

6. (8) Hart (2-0 6-1)

7. (9) Chino Hills (2-0 5-2) CH rolled to a convincing 24-10 over Rancho Cucamonga Thursday night. CH defense and its ground game were the big factors in their win. Next: # 5 Upland (2-0 5-2)

8. (10) Edison (2-0 5-2) Edison just killed hapless Marina 70-3. Edison looks to be a shoe in for the Sunset title. Next: Huntington Beach (1-1 3-4)

9. (5) Rancho Cucamonga (1-1 5-2) RC lost to CH 24-10. Seemed the Cougs couldn't get it going against a really good CH defense. RC's defense kept them in it as long they could. Just wasn't enough. Next: Los Osos (0-2 3-4)

10. (7) Murrieta Valley (1-1 5-2) MV showed its just not quite ready to be a primetime player as it lost to VM 35-7. Next: Chaparral (1-1 3-4)

others:
Fountain Valley (2-0 5-2) clinches playoff berth this week vs Marina
Etiwanda (1-1 3-4) Don't count the Eagles out of it just yet. Next: Damien
Valencia (2-0 4-3) wont be tested until last week vs Hart. Earns a playoff spot this week.
Los Al (0-2 2-5) if they lose this week its over. Has NHHS

This week in the Ocean League

Right off in the opening week of league last week, a pecking order was established. 6-0 El Segundo had no trouble with lowly Beverly Hills (0-6) in a 35-6 victory. Lawndale confirmed their legitimacy with a 48-41 win over Culver City. It seemed like every time CC threatened, Lawndale all-star QB Chris Murray would come up with another big play and he had just enough big plays from his supporting cast to get it done. The big shocker of the week had to be Hawthorne (1-5), beating Santa Monica (0-6) 20-6. I had seen Hawthorne play once this year and knew they had some talent, but were trying to get by with a modest number of players on their roster. The decent of Santa Monica from perennial front runner in the Ocean League has been shocking. While we are only one week into league play, they are unlikely to recover based upon their performance last week against an only modestly improved Hawthorne. They have been unable to score more than 10 points in any one game this season.
This week:
Game of the Week in the Ocean League:
#3 Culver City at #1 El Segundo
CC has been improving offensively every week and achieved almost juggernaut status against a good Lawndale team. Their Achilles heel? Defense. Opponents have not scored less than 21 points in any one game against CC. This may be the most athletic team El Segundo has faced this season but ES is usually a crisp executing team under coach Steve Shevlin. CC will have to minimize their own mistakes, both turnovers and penalties, to have a chance in this one. That is the one way CC can beat ES, by not beating themselves.
Culver stays in the league race with a win, a loss probably relegates them to third and with the reputation of the Ocean league not that good, they could miss the playoffs because I don't believe they get an automatic selection from third place.

Next best game:
#6 Beverly Hills at #4 Hawthorne. This should be either a Hawthorne blowout or a hard fought victory for Hawthorne. Beverly Hills has not been able to generate any offense this season, scoring no more than 13 points in any one game and has not given up less than 35 but all of their competition has been comparable or better than Hawthorne.

The blowout:
#2 Lawndale at #5 Santa Monica
Before this season started, I would not have projected this game this way. Lawndale's Chris Murray was a known factor, but the demise of SM was not. Can anybody stop Chris Murray? We will not get that answer this week in terms of the Ocean League. He should have good numbers but with SM struggling, his supporting cast may also have big days. Perhaps Murray will get to sit out the 4th quarter.
