Vista Murrieta 62, Rancho Cucamonga 56 (5OT)

Crazy night in what felt like freezing temperatures at Los Osos. RC battled back from a 28-10 half time deficit . The game went 5 OT, Vista stopped Angel Matute then scored with Cole Dubots from 9 yards out.

Definitely one of the most dramatic games I've been to. ASU commit Kyle Williams with 4 touchdowns, 2 on special teams, one rush, and one passing to lead the Broncos.

Full story coming later.

Fohian is in Moreno Valley for REV vs Rancho Verde.

How frequent do you want updates? Intermittently, quarterly, half, final only or none? That's provided I have a decent signal which has been very iffy since I arrived out here. Should be a good game as REV has owned them from the outset. I think they've played only 3 times or so in history. REV'S starting RB has a broken arm so it's up to QB Armando Herrera on a slightly breezy night.

My Western Division bracket

Ok folks, rip it apart but I am throwing up my Western division bracket if they let me pick. I know nothing of the detailed rules or any coin flips so there may be teams in this group that actually don't even make the playoffs. I used league placement, calpreps power ratings and regionalized the first round of the playoffs.
Calabasas ends up playing a Bay league opponent in each round after the first round.

Palm Springs blurb in LA Times

I thought CalSportsFan and others would enjoy this blog post by Eric Sondheimer of the LA Times:

"A starter since he was a freshman, Will Olvera is the senior quarterback at Palm Springs who Coach Dan Murphy can count on whether it's hot or cold, whether the opponent is good or not.

He has helped lead Palm Springs to a 3-0 start.

He passed for 156 yards against Tahquitz, 321 yards against Redlands and 270 yards against Temescal Canyon. He's completing 68% of his passes.

Last season he passed for 3,405 yards and 35 touchdowns when Palm Springs won the Eastern Division championship.

He's only 5 feet 9 but finds ways to get the ball to his receivers."

Pac 5 Bracket

Top/Bottom
Chaminade at Centennial
OLU at St. Bonnie
Lakewood at Mater Dei
Westlake at Serra

LB Jordan at Oaks Christian
Norco at Bishop Amat
Loyola at LB Wilson
Corona at St. John Bosco

I am definitely looking forward to at Serra or Mater Dei against Centennial in the semis on top or OC/Amat against Bosco in the semis.

My Central Division bracket

Based off the top 4 teams in last week's CIF polls (1. Charter Oak, 2. Summit, 3. San Marino, 4. Glendora) and my belief that Los Altos will get the WC (Ayala has strength of schedule and strength of league over Los Altos and Alta Loma, but Los Altos and Alta Loma have better records and common opponent points) and also doing my best to avoid rematches, here's what I came up with

1. Charter Oak (Hacienda 1)
Chaffey (Mt. Baldy 3)

Grand Terrace (Sunkist 2)
Monrovia (Rio Hondo 2)

Colony (Mt. Baldy 1)
Diamond Ranch (Hacienda 3)

4. Glendora (Palomares 1)
South Pasadena (Rio Hondo 3)

3. San Marino (Rio Hondo 1)
Kaiser (Sunkist 3)

Chino (Hacienda 2)
South Hills (Palomares 3)

Bonita (Palomares 2)
Don Lugo (Mt. Baldy 2)

2. Summit (Sunkist 1)
Los Altos (WC)

LB Poly's playoff chances took turn for the worse

The Jackrabbits, forced to forfeit three league games because of an ineligible player, finished in a three-way tie for third place with Long Beach Jordan and Long Beach Cabrillo on Friday night.

The three schools' names were put into an envelope to break the tie. The first school chosen was Poly, which eliminated the Jackrabbits from consideration. Jordan will go as the third-place representative because of a win over Cabrillo.

Cabrillo goes as the fourth-place team because of a forfeit win over Poly. Poly can apply for at-large spot, but its 4-6 record and weak league credentials puts it at a disadvantage in the playoff criteria.

In the Trinity League, a three-way tie for third place was broken by coin flips. Orange Lutheran gets third place, JSerra fourth and Servite fifth. That means the Trinity League could once again get the two at-large berths because of Servite's strength of schedule edge over Chaminade, the fourth-place team from the Mission League.

LB Poly forfeits games; playoff chaos ensues

Per Eric Sondheimer, LA Times (excerpts):

The Southern Section office confirmed Thursday afternoon that 19-time section champion Long Beach Poly has forfeited Moore League victories over Cabrillo, Compton and Long Beach Wilson, leaving the Jackrabbits not only out of first place but in the precarious position of trying to make the Pac-5 playoffs as a third-place team.

In total, Poly had to forfeit four games overall because of an ineligible player (the Jackrabbits' forfeited a season-opening nonleague win over Arizona Centennial). They move from 7-2 overall to 3-6 and drop from 5-0 in league to 2-3.

The Jackrabbits will need a win over Long Beach Millikan on Friday night to move into a third-place tie in league with the loser of the Lakewood-Long Beach Jordan game and possibly Cabrillo.

According to Moore League secretary Lisa Ulmer, a three-way tie for third would be broken by putting the three schools' names in a hat. The first name drawn would be eliminated. The remaining tie would be broken by the head to head result.

Wilson, at 5-0, will win its first league title since 1991.

Moore League before Poly forfeits: Long Beach Poly 5-0, 7-2; Long Beach Wilson 4-1, 7-2; Long Beach Jordan 3-2, 3-6; Lakewood 3-2, 3-6; Long Beach Cabrillo 2-3, 3-6; Millikan 1-4, 3-6; Compton 0-6, 0-9.

Moore League after Poly forfeits: Long Beach Wilson 5-0, 8-1; Long Beach Jordan 3-2, 3-6; Lakewood 3-2, 3-6; Long Beach Cabrillo 3-2, 4-5; Long Beach Poly 2-3, 3-6; Millikan 1-4, 3-6; Compton 1-5, 1-8.

Poly's forfeits will cause issues in the Pac-5 seedings. A league championship team might have to face Poly in the opening round. The seedings will be announced on Sunday.

This week in the Ocean League

Upcoming Games
Fri 11/06 Beverly Hills (1-8, 1-3) at Culver City (6-3, 3-1), 7:00pm
projection: Culver City (CA) 48-20
Fri 11/06 Santa Monica (1-8, 1-3) at El Segundo (7-2, 2-2), 7:00pm
projection: El Segundo (CA) 38-7
Fri 11/06 Lawndale (4-5, 2-2) at Hawthorne (CA), 7:00pm
projection: Lawndale (3-6, 3-1) 48-6

Talk about things going topsy turvy. Lawndale looked like it had all but mathematically locked up the Ocean League title coming into this week but had to forfeit 2 league games and 2 more non-league games due to an illegal transfer from Santa Monica. Apparently several players transferred from Santa Monica while their Samo coach became the head coach at Lawndale. No improprieties have been found on the part of the coach nor most of the transfers, but one student transfer submitted false paperwork that was discovered during an attendance investigation. Lawndale now has forfeit losses to Culver City, and, ironically, Santa Monica. They are in danger of missing the playoffs if they don't beat Hawthorne this week but should still be heavily favored in the game because they have likely league MVP QB Chris Murray leading the charge.
Culver City finds themselves suddenly tied for first place with an easily winnable game against Beverly Hills to close out league and the regular season. With Hawthorne likely to fall to Lawndale, CC should find themselves atop the Ocean League standings as the legally undisputed champions of the Ocean League. That should help them get a better playoff seeding as well.
Hawthorne controls their own fate with a 3-1 league record but must face the best team in the league, on the field anyway, in Lawndale. While it is not known what the level of contribution the illegal transfer made to the team, it is known the team was still able to get two league wins, including a key one against El Segundo without the transfer causing the game to be forfeited.
Since Santa Monica has already lost to Beverly Hills, I would assume El Segundo should have enough to beat Samo even if their QB is still injured. But will a win be enough to get El Segundo to the playoffs? Both of the teams they could end up sharing second place with have head to head wins against them. I am not sure where that factors in to the final decision about league placement.

West Valley Division Rankings Week 10

Last week of the regular season.
There was a major upset in the Top 10 this week with Hart being shut out by Saugus, which may play a major role on playoffs pairings.

Who will be the at-larger team? El Toro will be 5-5 after this weeks win vs Dana Hills, but only 1-3 in league.
For us, the Foothill League scenarios are awesome. Love it, going to be interesting for sure, with a lot of scoreboard watching.

Why? Valencia (4-0) plays Hart (3-1) who just lost to the 'Gus, Golden Valley (2-2) plays Saugus (3-1). There is a possibility of a 3 way tie for second place with each team being 3-2. More interesting there could be 3 teams with 4-1 records. Now this is fun.

Baseline second place is up for grabs between Rancho Cucamonga and Upland. Can RC finally beat the Scots? or is more of the same. Game is at Upland.

SCL pits San Juan Hills at Tesoro winner takes second. We think the winner gets the #4 seed.

SWL has Great Oak at Murrieta Valley. After starting off 0-3 GO has won 5 of its last 6, the only loss was to Vista Murrieta. Are the 'Pack peaking at the right time? Murrieta Valley's two losses are from Rancho Cucamonga and Vista Murrieta.

1. (1) Mission Viejo (4-0 10-0) Mission went wire to wire in our Top 10 this year as they finished off their season defeating El Toro 39-20. Next: WVD first round playoffs.
