San Marcos wins Discovery Bowl Trophy over Mission Hills

Bryson Bolin's late 13 yard pass to Josh Bornes sparks San Marcos to Discovery Bowl win

By David A. Willauer-Friday, November 4, 2016-San Marcos High School-San Marcos, CA: For the first time since 2004 the Discovery Bowl Trophy goes back to the Knights of San Marcos High School as they came back from a 10-0 deficit on Sam Dixon's 14 carries for 70 yards scored on a 14 yard touchdown run and Eric Cavatano's 40 yard field in the first quarter.

San Marcos Josh Bornes on the win: It was a great win for our squad tonight and a team effort, "I did this for my family and the school." "For 12 years we finally worked hard to claim the Discovery Bowl Trophy." "Kyle Phillips called the play for my winning touchdown which was a swing sweep to the left and as I caught the ball for the win I carried my team to the win."

The Knights came back at 10-7 in the second quarter as qb Bryce Bolin (Named Co MVP of the Discovery Bowl game) 12 completions out of 21 attempts for 164 yards threw a 73 yard pass to Kyle Phillips (5 receptions for 98) and threw the go ahead touchdown with 18 seconds left to Josh Bornes(Co MVP of the Discovery Bowl) 2 receptions for 22 yards for 13 yards with the PAT good by Eric Cavatano to make the final score 14-10 in favor of the Knights of San Marcos as they claim the Discovery Bowl Trophy.

Ty Rogers led the Knights of San Marcos in rushing as he carried the ball 11 times for 60 yards.

CIF punishes South Gate for violations

LA City Section Press Release:

October 24, 2016

GRANADA HILLS, Calif.

Upon conclusion of an investigation into its football program, the CIF LA City Section has determined the following regarding South Gate High School.

South Gate varsity football has been found to have five players in violation of transfer rules and will forfeit all games in which any of the five have participated in.

The JV team was found to have allowed participation by three academically ineligible players. The JV team will forfeit all games in which these players participated in.

Since this is a second transfer violation and participation offense within the past three years, South Gate has been deemed ineligible for the 2016 Division I playoffs. South Gate was previously on probation during the second half of the 2014 season and the first half of the 2015 season.

Additionally, the five players on the varsity football team have been declared ineligible for the remainder of the season.

This ruling is subject to the request of appeal by the South Gate administration.

South Gate is currently 6-2 overall and 3-0 in league. The Rams are ranked #6 by MaxPreps in Division I in the City Section.

Culver City, the Ocean League and Division 11bracket predictions

The Culver City Centaurs ultimately took care of business by beating the Santa Monica Vikings (4-5, 1-3) 56-20. But Santa Monica kept the game in doubt until late in the first half when they finally fell behind 35-14. They still made it interesting after the half, scoring their final TD to close to within 35-20 early in the second half. Centaur QB Jonathan Martin threw for 5 TD's for the high octane Culver offense. (Culver is now 6-3 overall and 3-1 in league in a 3 way tie for first place.

El Segundo (8-1, 3-1) beat Hawthorne 35-7 in a battle of other first place teams, moving Hawthorne (3-6, 2-2) down into fourth place in the Ocean League, out of a guaranteed playoff spot. Hawthorne, although possessing some talent, was not expected to break through against the top three in this league. Unfortunately, they must face Lawndale (5-4, 3-1) next week in another expected loss.

The Lawndale win this week against lowly Beverly Hills (0-9) by a score of 67-0 allowed them to stay tied for first place and things are not likely to change this week as the three top teams are all solid favorites.

Culver City will face Beverly Hills this week. Poor Beverly Hills projects as the 14th worst team in the entire Southern Section. That is not likely to help CC prepare for the playoffs.

Division 11 Playoff Projections:

The playoff possibilities are getting clearer in D-11 and I will make a projection of my bracket for D-11.

Katella (9-0) should get to the playoffs undefeated and secure the top seed. I attempted to regionalize the playoffs a bit, but that left me with Westminster (5-4, 3-1) playing Katella in the opening round, and Katella beat them in a preseason game this year so I am not sure if the CIF will do that or not.

Montebello (8-1, 4-0) is the next highest rated 1st place team so I am guessing they will end up with the second seed and I am guessing that Oak Park (6-3, 1-1) will get in as an At Large team and will have to face Montebello.

Bishop Montgomery (6-3, 3-0) will be the last of the first place teams making the D-11 playoffs, but their record and weaker South Catholic League should hold them down to the number three seed. I am placing them against Crean Lutheran (7-2). a freelance team that I think can still squeeze into the playoffs as an at-large entry.

Victor Valley (8-2, 3-1), gets my 4th seed based upon power ratings and a second place in league finish. I am projecting Ontario Christian (6-3, 3-1) as their likely opponent.

I am projecting that Coachella Valley (6-3, 2-2) should do well enough to draw an opening round home game against Ramona (7-1-1, 3-1).

Jurupa Hills (6-3, 4-0) projects to be the next team to get a home playoff game. But they're not likely to win this week so they will be unable to secure first place, nor even second depending on how playoff position in league is determined.

I believe Culver City can still get picked for an opening round home game, even if they are not designated as the first or second place team from the Ocean League. I project Quartz Hill (6-3, 4-2) to be their opponent.

My final home team for round one is Arcadia (8-1, 5-1) and they could face Valley View (5-4, 2-2)

Torrey Pines defeats Mission Hills

2nd half touchdowns by Luke Duerr and Sully O Brien pace Torrey Pines in 33-14 win

By David A. Willauer-Contributing Writer

-Mission Hills High School-San Marcos, CA-Friday, October 28, 2016:

Torrey Pines 33, Mission Hills 14

The Falcons of Torrey Pines High School improved their record to 7-2 on the season as they broke a 14-14 tie on Gabe Gmyr's 30 yard run to tie the game and went ahead on Luke Duerr's 2nd touchdown run of 1 yard.

Duerr had 25 carries for 113 yards and also scored on a 5 yard run, which was followed by a safety for 2 points. Nino Alworth, the grandson of former Chargers wide receiver Lance Alworth, connected on a 39 yard field goal. Sully O'Brien had 17 carries for 87 yards and scored on a 5 yard touchdown run.

Torrey Pines head football coach Rod Gladnick: "I felt this game as I felt about the Oceanside contest. As strong as we are, we physically controlled the line of scrimmage and the clock. We are in the best shape of any team in San Diego County."

"We wanted to turn this game into a dogfight; our kids played their hearts out. At halftime I felt that the tide was starting to go our way, and in the third quarter when we came out our offense held the ball for 9 minutes. We drove 80 yards with 20 plays and punched the touchdown in." said Coach Gladnick.

"Our defense played better as our team improves every week. Luke Duerr has been a tremendous player for us. We ran the Wing T and our offense is hard to stop. Junior Sully O'Brien is improving each game and our whole football team is coming on. We have 3 underclassman on our offensive line but we gained 300 yards today and in the last 4 games we had a total of 1200 yards," said Coach Gladnick.

Mission Hills (6-3) was led by Sam Dixon as he carried the ball 10 carries for 114 yards and scored on an 8 yard touchdown run. Quarterback Jack Tuttle had 6 carries for 12 yards and scored on a 1 yard run.

Culver City, the Ocean League and Division 11

Culver City was able to wear out Hawthorne in their 62-35 victory at Hawthorne. Everytime Hawthorne would muster a score, CC would just respond with another. Hawthorne closed to within 8 points in the second half but CC scored 20 points in the final quarter compared to Hawthorne's one 4th quarter TD.

Culver City also managed to slip into a three way tie for first place in the Ocean League when El Segundo played excellent D and a savvy game plan to beat 1st place Lawndale 14-7 to force the three way tie.

Santa Monica (4-4, 1-2) beat Beverly Hills (0-8) in the battle to stay out of the cellar. Culver (5-3, 2-1) hosts Santa Monica next week.

I am not sure how playoff slots are determined or if they even matter anymore than being in one of the qualifying spots. These will be the three playoff teams from the Ocean League, providing there are enough slots left for whichever team gets slated as the #3 playoff, if they are even doing that this year.

I know the 6 team Ocean League should likely be only allowed 3 playoff teams, but the three are all in different divisions so I don't know if they can just consider all three as tied for first for playoff purposes, something two of three schools would certainly like, or they have to assign them a playoff slot 1, 2 or third for the purposes of playoff selection. 1st place teams being selected first, then 2nd etc. Even if Culver ends up in a third place playoff spot, I anticipate that being good enough to get them into the playoffs and perhaps still draw a first round home game.

The playoff picture is starting to get a little clearer and it looks like there will be only four 1st place teams in the D-11 playoffs. They should be Katella (8-0), Montebello (7-1, 3-0), Oak Park (6-2, 1-0) and Bishop Montgomery (5-3, 2-0). I am not sure whether Culver City will be considered a first place team or not. Then there will probably be only two 2nd place teams, Victor Valley (8-1, 3-0) and Coachella Valley (6-2, 2-1). There should be enough third place teams to fill out the rest of the playoff field of 16.

Teams on the bubble right now I would consider to be Heritage Christian (5-3, 1-1), Crean Lutheran (6-1) currently third in the D-11 CIF poll, Ontario Christian (5-3, 2-1) and Jurupa Hills (5-3, 3-0).

Torrey Pines defeats Oceanside 32-28

Nick Nasland's touchdown runs of 3 and 17 sparks Torrey Pines to a 32-28 win over the Oceanside Pirates

By David A. Willauer-Contributing Writer-
Simcox Field-Oceanside High School-Oceanside, CA:

The Falcons of Torrey Pines with its Wing-T offense improved their record at 5-2 on the season as Sully O'Brien (16 carries for 119 yards) scored on a 5 yard touchdown run with 3:56 left in the game as Torrey Pines defeated the Pirates of Oceanside High by a 32-28 score.

Other Falcon standouts: Nick Naslund scored 2 touchdowns on runs of 3 and 17 yards along with 6 carries for 39 yards, Nino Alworth 2 field goals of 30 and 32 yards, Luke Duerr 20 carries for 93 yards and Miles Hastings 4 completions out of 11 attempts for 81 yards.

Torrey Pines head football coach Ron Gladnick on the win: "First of all we have respect for Oceanside's players and coaches. We look forward to this game every year cause you will get the best of high school football. I feel like that happened here tonight but we made more plays then they did that is what it came down to."

"We have a young offensive line but in the last couple of weeks our offense has grown and matured a lot. We had 382 yards rushing last week and I don't know how much we had tonight but we're hitting our stride. We're a young football team that is improving each week. When we trailed 28-26 our coaching staff talked to our kids on how to play every game until it is over and the squad did it tonight as they kept grinding and made plays."

For Oceanside (4-3) Tevin Meadows had 9 carries for 44 yards, Josh Bernard 4 carries for 12 yards and scored on a 3 yard touchdown run along with a halfback pass of 75 yards to Clarence Lightfoot for a touchdown. QB Max Shuffer had 9 completions out of 17 attempts for 127 yards and 1 interception.

Culver City, the Ocean League and Division 11

Culver City pulled off a big upset last week in beating league favorite El Segundo 24-19. Turnovers and the loss of El Segundo's 6'2" 220 pound fullback Ashton Saltz late in the game to a shoulder injury made it possible for the win as CC was dominated along the line of scrimmage by their opponent for the second week in a row.

That should be Culver's toughest league game, however. CC had been chewing on their loss to El Segundo since last year, in which their starting QB got lost for the season, and came in very focused. Now they face the next most formidable opponent in league in the Lawndale Cardinals.

Lawndale may now have the focus and motivation edge. Lawndale beat CC in a wild shootout last year but ended up losing the league title due to having to forfeit games due to illegal transfers. They should be motivated to make a statement on the field again. This could be the trap game for Culver. If they do not come in as focused and motivated as they should, they could fall to Lawndale (#9 in D-6) even though they are slight favorites. Culver will have to win AT Lawndale too.

Biggest blowout of the week will be El Segundo (5-1) facing a horrible Beverly Hills (0-6). And El Segundo comes in angry about their loss to Culver City.

The other Ocean League game features the battle for fourth place between Hawthorne (2-4, 1-0) and Santa Monica (3-3, 0-1). It would be a big upset for either of these teams to move any higher than 4th.

In Division 11, Katella (6-0) remains atop the CIF poll and might very well stay there the rest of the regular season because they face no formidable opponents in league. They are listed #3 in the calpreps.com power ratings for D-11.

Culver City (4-2) jumped to #1 in the calpreps power ratings for D-11 after their upset victory this week. They are #5 in the CIF poll, partly because the voters tend to look at win/loss more because they might not have any additional info on many of the teams they are voting on.

Romona (5-0-1) is #2 in the CIF poll, but #17 in the D-11 power ratings. They should stay high in the CIF poll this coming week as they are expected to win but have a couple of league games still to come that they should lose and push them down to third place, but still a likely playoff entry.

Crean Lutheran (6-1) is #3 in CIF but also drops significantly in the power ratings to #13. They are freelance with tough projected losses remaining. I don't know enough to figure out how the CIF will judge this team for the playoffs.

Oak Park (5-1) is #4 in CIF and 9th in power ratings. Oak Park is the favorite in the small 4 team Canyon league, but Simi Valley and Agoura look good enough to upset. Losing to one of them should still get them into the playoffs, but to both would probably knock them out of playoff position. They face their toughest non-league opponent this week in Grace Brethren but a win will not be essential until they see Simi Valley (3-4) on 10/21.

Arcadia (6-0) is #7 in the CIF poll, but #2 in power ratings. They took care of business this week in beating Burroughs of Burbank 37-27. That win means likely no worse than a third place finish and should lock up a playoff spot out of the 8 team Pacific league, and they look good enough to pull off the other two upsets against Crescenta Valley (5-1, 3-0) and Burbank (4-2, 3-0) and just win league outright, but third should be good enough if they don't beat those two.

Valley View (3-3, 0-1) is #4 in the power ratings but only a mention of one of the "others" schools in consideration for placement in the CIF poll. Valley View lost their first league game last week to powerful Rancho Verde but is projected to run the table the rest of the way in league. They should start to climb in the CIF poll when other pretenders start to fall by the wayside.

The CIF poll and power ratings are almost in agreement on Montebello (5-1), #5 in power ratings and #6 in CIF poll. They should rise in the CIF poll in coming weeks as they are projected to go undefeated in league. Only Schurr High seems to present any capable opposition to them in the Almont league.

That covers most of the best in D-11.
