Mission Hills defeats Mater Dei

Utah bound Jack Tuttle's 2 touchdown passes paces Mission HIlls in win over Mater Dei

By David A. Willauer-Contributing Writer-Mission Hills High School-San Marcos, CA-9-8-17: After a 41-14 defeat at the hands of Mater Dei High School in Chula Vista, things went the "Grizzlies" way on their home football field of sorts but tonight's game was a National Football Foundation contest in San Diego as a lot of other high school games were played all over the United States of America.

In tonight"s contest the Grizzlies returned the favor as they defeated the Crusaders by a 56-7 score on 2 Jack Tuttle passes (16 completions out of 23 attempts for 144 yards) of 16 and Chris Olave (6 receptions for 112 yards) for 39 yards, Sam Dixon's (4 carries for 18 yards) 2 touchdown runs of 2 and 1 yards each and teammate Damien Wigand's (17 carries for 138 yards) scored 2 touchdown runs of 11 and 6 yards. Backup players Alan Arellano (4 carries for 54 yards) also contributed on a 15 yard touchdown run and Nathan Barraga 1 carry for 3 scored on a 3 yard run.

Mission HIlls qb JackTuttle on his performance vs. Mater Dei: "We won big today I support my teammates they did a great job I am very satisfied that we are 3-0 and hope to be 4-0 next Friday My passing was well today and give my offensive line that did the blocking that is how we won."

Mater Dei scored their only touchdown in the first quarte as Aiden Calvert scored on a 99 yard kickoff return in the first quarter tied the game at 7-7.

One player from each school were named the Most Valuable Player and will be invited to travel to the National Football Foundation Banquet in April of 2018. The Most Valuable Players were from Mater Dei was Aiden Calvert and for Mission HIlls was Damien Wigand

With the win the Grizzlies of Mission Hills will travel to Carlsbad High School next Friday night in a 7:00 pm contest

Division 11, week 2 predictions

Culver City has seized the #1 spot in D-11 this week in both CIFss poll & calpreps.com rankings after their convincing 58-27 victory over West Torrance. The Centaurs face non-directional, just "Torrance" this week, who will be running their wing T misdirection. Torrance (0-1) lost their opener 15-26 to Marina (2-0) of Huntington Beach. They could be a slightly better team than they were last year, but not likely to be good enough to bring down this high flying Culver team. It was 49-14 last year, I expect similar this year.

Arcadia (1-1) has the #2 spot in calpreps ratings & #3 in the CIFss poll. They played way up out of their division losing to D-2 Cathedral 0-49. Perhaps having played Cathedral last week will make Hart seem like a cupcake in comparison. It worked for Downey (1-1) who lost to Santa Margarita before beating Hart last week. But, I don't think Arcadia is at the level of Downey. I expect Arcadia to lose by at least a couple of TD's to an angry Hart squad.

Arroyo (2-0) is #2 in the CIF-SS D-11 poll & #4 in the calpreps rankings. Arroyo has won 2 games against modestly inferior teams, but not blowing out either of them. Schurr will not be significantly inferior. Schurr won a close one in week 0 against California (0-2) of Whittier 21-14. Then they came back and dominated Garfield (1-1) 46-14 and Schurr's senior QB Miguel Aguero is on fire throwing for 3 TD's against Cali & 5 against Garfield. Their receivers catch & run with the ball well. Watch out for that bubble screen. They love to run it. Arroyo comes in with a slightly better rating, but I would call this a toss up. The good (or bad) news for Arroyo is that this should be the toughest game of the regular season. This Schurr team will be the only one that will come up to playoff competition level before the playoffs, but that also means Arroyo is a lock to make it to the playoffs.

St. Genevieve is #3 in the calpreps rankings & #4 in the CIFss poll. Unfortunately for St. Gen, their game against Heritage Christian of Northridge was cancelled last week, probably due to smoke from the fire & heat. They will get a stiffer test this week (than in week 0) from West Ranch (1-0) who beat a struggling Simi Valley (0-2) 55-7 in week 0. But Simi is still more of a team than St. Gen faced in week 0 against Poly of Sun Valley. Looks like both teams missed a game due to heat & fire last week. St. Gen is significantly higher rated than West this week but not sure if those ratings can be trusted. If St. Gen wins by 2 TD's or more, their ratings may be justified, if not, they better watch for Mary Star stealing their playoff spot. I will go out on a limb and pick West to win in a close contest.

Rancho Mirage (2-0) is #5 in both the CIFss poll & calpreps rankings. Rancho faces their toughest game of the regular season against LaQuinta (1-0). LQ easily beat North (0-1) of Riverside last week 35-6. While Rancho may be a tougher opponent than North for LQ, I still expect them to win, perhaps by 2 TD's. Rancho is 1 dimensional. RB Marques Prior will have to carry Rancho. Rancho needs to watch out for bulky TE & DE Gordon Haskell. He is a load & they like to throw to him. Rancho, much like Arroyo, should still cruise into the D-11 playoffs as there is no serious competition for them in the De Anza league.

Westminster (1-0) is #6 in calpreps #7 in the CIF-SS D-11 poll. They face Marina (2-0) of Huntington Beach this week. Westminster had a modest 21-17 win over a less than stellar Garden Grove. Marina will be a tougher nut to crack, although Westminster still comes in with the better rating. Marina did not overwhelm either of their two low rated opponents the last 2 weeks. I will pick Westminster in a 21-17 victory. Marina would love to move into the same league as Westminster (the Golden West) & avoid their annual pummeling in the Sunset league.

Segerstrom (2-0) of Santa Ana is #8 in calpreps & #6 in the CIF-SS D-11 poll. Segerstrom plays in the same 6 team league as Westminster. Segerstrom has pitched 2 straight shut outs winning 39-0 & 38-0, but against lower level opponents. They take a BIG step up this week hosting El Modena (1-0) of Orange. El Modena won last week's opener against Woodbridge (0-2) of Irvine 35-13. El Modena is rated about 50 points higher than Segerstrom's last opponent. El Modena's senior QB A.J. Esparanza was a very efficient 10 of 14 for 138 yards & 3 TD's. They also ran the ball for 230 total yards. Well balanced. While Segerstrom is likely to lose this game, this contest and next week against Godinez should help them be prepared for the winnable but possibly close games in league. Westminster & Segerstrom are not locks for the playoffs out of the Golden West league as either could win league or finish 4th in the 6 team league & 4th may not get you into a playoff spot.

Hillcrest (1-1) of Riverside is #7 in calpreps & #8 in the CIF-SS D-11 poll. Hillcrest beat Jurupa Hills (1-1) in week 0, 34-15, but fell to the far superior Notre Dame (2-0) of Riverside, 25-49, per calpreps, or 25-36 per Maxpreps, last week. They face a much more reasonable, yet challenging opponent this week in Chino (1-1). Hillcrest rates as a slight favorite right now. QB Cordell Labrie & RB Elijah Dominguez are the fuel that makes Hillcrest go. J.L. Jefferson, a Junior, also gets some reps at QB. Dominguez had 211 yards receiving against Notre Dame, according to Maxpreps. Chino has some balance with enough successful QB action to keep other teams honest, but RB Derrin Henry is the star with 345 yards rushing in 2 games. Chino looks like they might be able to play good defense. I will predict that they can slow Hillcrest down enough to get the win in a close one. Hillcrest is also likely to handle all their River Valley league competition and be a lock for the D-11 playoffs.

Lakeside (2-0) of Lake Elsinore is #10 in calpreps.com & #9 in the CIF-SS D-11 poll. Lakeside has stacked their preleague schedule with creampuffs, but that is somewhat understandable as they are playing in a tough 6 team Sunbelt league & project to finish 4th which would require an overall winning record to have any chance for an at-large playoff spot should any be available. They won their first two games 33-0 & 33-7 but this week's opponent, Canyon Springs (1-0) should be somewhat tougher. Unfortunately, the stats show Lakeside as pretty one dimensional, leaning heavily on the capabilities of senior RB Adrian Burt. Lakeside has the better rating, but the 1 dimensional look of Lakeside has me concerned and I will pick Chino to win.

Pacific (2-0) of San Bernardino is ranked 10th in the CIF-SS D-11 poll & 15th in the calpreps.com rankings. Why the disparity you ask? The CIF polls have usually been swayed more by records and scores while calpreps ratings seem to be more influenced by wins and strength of opponent. Pacific won their first 2 in routs of 44-0 & 48-6 but the competition was very weak. They face what may be their toughest test of the preseason against Indian Springs (1-1) of San Bernardino, but there is already a comparison game and Indian Springs was only able to beat Jurupa Valley 28-14. Pacific should win this one and could go undefeated through the whole regular season, albeit against pretty weak competition, but they also should be a lock to be in the D-11 playoffs.

The Ocean League, post week 1, pre-week 2

Pretty happy with the performance of my Culver City Centaurs in week 1 against West Torrance. They won 58-27. CC QB Jonathan Martin was 28 of 37 for 537 yards passing, 5 TD's and no picks. He started the scoring off with a 52 yard keeper, ending up with 103 yards rushing on 7 attempts & 2 TD's.

But it is not a one man show. The receiving corps is nightmarishly good with 3 different receivers having more than 100 yards receiving and one with less than 100, having 3 TD catches. While West would not be confused with a top level program, they are usually not a doormat either. West had beaten CC 6 straight times until this year. They certainly possessed some physicality.

The game was not an immediate runaway either as it was tied 14-14 at one point. It could have stayed even closer if the West receivers had done a better job of catching the ball. There were several drops. I still think West has a shot at a Pioneer League championship this year, particular with Leuzinger looking a little vulnerable.

Culver City moves on to face another Pioneer league opponent, Torrance. Torrance (0-1) lost to Marina 26-15 in week 1. Torrance runs the wing T, but did show they may be able to surprise with a few passes. While their current rating has them lower than their final rating of last year, I think it is possible that they might be a little better. Having said that, Culver City also looks a little better, so I think if Torrance can match the 49-14 loss that they achieved against CC last year, than they will be doing well. Culver is ranked #1 in both the CIFss D-11 poll and the calpreps.com rankings for D-11.

Lawndale (1-0) still looks like the team to beat in the Ocean League. They shutout a challenged St. Bonaventure 35-0, who may be fielding their worst team in some time. Bonny might have a QB problem as the junior was only 10 of 24 for 122 yards, no TD's and 2 interceptions. The QB was also the top runner for Bonny.

Now Lawndale takes on a prior private school upset victim, Crespi (1-1), this week. Crespi beat Sylmar (0-2) 13-0, then fell 41-21 to a very good Aquinas team. Crespi actually led early, 21-7, then the wheels fell off somehow. If Crespi is healthy, perhaps this is close, but I believe Lawndale would have to come in to this game as the favorite against Crespi, for the first time.

El Segundo had a very good opening week with their young team, beating Leuzinger (1-1) 35-18. They were fairly balanced with 166 yards passing & 116 rushing. It looks like senior Danny McEntee did provide leadership, intercepting a pass, defending 4 others and scoring twice. El Segundo intercepted 3 passes.

With only 1 week done, it remains to be seen whether this is El Segundo really good, or Leuzinger really bad. El Segundo faces Oak Park (1-0) next week. That game may not fully answer the question either. Oak Park beat PV Peninsula 21-16 last week. But in week 3, Mira Costa awaits and that will surely be a test for El Segundo.

Hawthorne dismantled a horrible LA City D-3 team, Rivera (0-2) last week, 46-6, and while the rating is significantly better for their next opponent, South Torrance (0-1), than Rivera, I suspect another blowout. It will be a couple of weeks before Hawthorne might see their first challenge against Leuzinger, but even Leuzinger is starting to look suspect.

Santa Monica (0-2) lost 47-8 last week to Cypress, whose rating compares well with the upper half of the Ocean League. That is not a good sign for Samo, however, their next three games possess some hope for Samo to get at least a couple of wins before they have to open against Lawndale in league.

Woeful Beverly Hills (0-2) finally gets to a part of the schedule where they might at least have a little hope to play competitively. They are on the road to Malibu (1-0) this week who was lucky enough to schedule one of the worst rated teams in the Southern Section, Keppel. Malibu should be able to beat Beverly Hills but there is at least a little hope for a competitive game.

Division 11, week 1 results vs projections

Here are my projections for D-11 week 1, followed by the actual results:

#1 Arcadia loses big to highly regarded Div 2 private Cathedral.
- Did not have to be a brilliant clairvoyant to see this coming, but the 49-0 loss has got to feel a little disappointing to Arcadia. A still tough test this coming week against Hart(0-1), but more reasonable than the Cathedral matchup. Problem for Arcadia is that they had trouble defending the pass and Hart is likely to also exploit that.

#2 Arroyo gets another victory this week by just 1 TD over Temple City.
- Arroyo was able to take care of business, winning 27-8 with their defense and run game particularly doing well in the contest. The D held the Temple City QB to 130 yards passing with just 1 TD and 3 interceptions. The Temple City run game was held to just 68 yards rushing on 24 carries. The Arroyo run game was in good hands with senior Steven Ocariz running for 173 yards & 3 TD's on 18 carries. Arroyo Junior QB Ernesto Camacho had his struggles but was still 19 of 31 for 168 yards with no TD's and 1 interception.

#3 St. Genevieve beats #12 Heritage Christian of Northridge by 2 TD's.
- Looks like this game must have been cancelled with all the heat & smoke in the San Fernando Valley from the fire.

#4 Culver City eeks out a win over West Torrance with both teams scoring at least 25 points.
- Culver City was cruising in this 58-27 victory, in the fourth quarter, however it was somewhat tighter earlier in the contest having been tied 14-14 at one point. Culver QB Jonathan Martin threw for 516 yards & 5 TD's while running for 101 more & 2 TD's. He had plenty of assistance from his receiving corps who broke off several long runs from short passes.

#5 Rancho Mirage loses a close contest to Shadow Hills.
- It looks like this one was a close as I thought it would be. Rancho won 20-14. Rancho was a conservatively efficient 6 of 10 passing for 96 yards while running for 203 yards, 127 of those by Marques Prior and his 3 TD's. Shadow Hills leaned on their sophomore QB for 237 yards passing but he was intercepted twice and their run game could only muster 82 yards on 22 carries.

#6 Hillcrest of Riverside loses by 1 TD to Notre Dame of Riverside
- Hillcrest lost by a little more than a TD, the final being 25-49. They face a much more reasonable challenge this week as they host Chino (1-1), a team with a power rating in the same neighborhood as Hillcrest.

#7 Westminster beats Garden Grove by 1 TD
- Westminster beat Garden Grove 21-17, pretty close to my projection. They face a modestly tougher opponent this week in Marina (2-0)

#8 Pasadena, beats Maranatha of Pasadena by 10 points.
- Pasadena lost to Maranatha 21-36. Maranatha's QB went 13 of 22 for 227 yards

#9 Segerstrom has a blow out win against inferior D-13 team Saddleback.
- It was a easy as I projected with Segerstrom winning 38-0. Unfortunately for Segerstrom, they now face a much tougher El Modena (1-0) who are also stepping up in terms of talent the opponent has.

#10 Highland gets a 1 TD win against Thousand Oaks.
- did not realize this game is not until next week!

Ocean League week 1 preview

3 of the 6 Ocean League teams played in week 0. All of them considered to be the likely less competitive teams in the league.

Hawthorne had the most interesting result, beating La Canada 50-12 last week. Hawthorne had 377 yards rushing, 257 by junior Omodolapo Abioro. QB Joshua Robledo was just 4 of 9 for 39 yards including 1 TD & 2 interceptions, but he had 3 rushing TD's. They added to their 4 offensive TD's by returning 2 interceptions for TD's. But La Canada seems to be a program struggling to find success.

In a side note to Foothill league historians, a Ryan Zerbel was listed as the head coach at La Canada in 2015. Despite a decent size roster, La Canada seems to lack any significant line size. La Canada is projected to go 4-6 and finish 3rd in the Rio Hondo league. Hawthorne should have an equally, to possibly easier, game this week against LA City Division 3 Rivera (0-1). Rivera lost to LA City Division 3 Marquez 12-20, last week. Rivera is projected to go 2-8 and finish 6th (last) in their Exposition League. Hawthorne will go no worse than 3-2 in pre-league, maybe even 4-1, but the competition, except for Leuzinger, is modest in pre-league.

Santa Monica lost to Segerstrom 0-39 last week. Segerstrom appears to be a program on a modest rise. Segerstrom went 11-2 in division 12 last year, making it to the D-12 semifinals before getting smoked by Arroyo of El Monte, 12-70. Segerstrom has moved up to D-11 this year and was not ranked in any preseason polls, but the CIFss and the calpreps power rankings have both moved them into their D-11 top 10 this week, #10 in the CIFss D-11 poll, & #9 in the calpreps power ratings for D-9. It remains to be seen whether Segerstrom can sustain this year's momentum as calpreps only projects them to finish 5-5 overall & 4th in the 6 team Golden West league and that may not be good enough to get into the D-11 playoffs.

Meanwhile, Samo faces another opponent this week, Cypress (1-0), with a superior rating. Cypress rolled over Woodbridge 36-3 last week. Highlights show Samo has some size but they may lack a productive passing game. I suspect this game will not go well for Samo either. Samo should have 3 winnable pre-league games after this before they get bitch slapped back into reality by Lawndale in week 1 of Ocean league play.

Beverly Hills opened the season, losing 35-0 against Carnagie of Riverside, another D-13 opponent. Carnagie is projected to finish 1st in their league, but overall 5-5. Carnagie racked up 272 yards rushing with 5 rushing TD's and their sophomore QB went 8 of 12 for 117 yards. That sounds like another rough season coming for BH. BH travels to Ojai this week to play a diminishing program, Nordhoff. Nordhoff did manage to get by Hueneme last week, 23-20. But BH should make Nordhoff look pretty good this week.

El Segundo did not play last week. The Eagles will have their work cut out for them right away as they travel to play locals Leuzinger (1-0). Leuzinger beat Lakewood of the Moore league, the projected 3rd place team in the 7 team Moore league, 20-2. Leuzinger is ranked #3 in the CIFss D-9 week 1 poll & #3 in the calpreps power ratings. Leuzinger has not posted stats from the game but we do know that they held Lakewood's new QB to 14 completions in 40 attempts for 136 yards, no TD's and 1 interception. More impressive to me is that they held Lakewood to just 43 yards rushing.

A score similar to the Lakewood game, or better will be a good enough signal that El Segundo will battle for an Ocean League playoff position. Even if they lose this one by more, they can still excuse it as a young team learning the ropes against a good team that already has a game of experience this season. El Segundo is young and we will have to see if they make progress in this game, or even perhaps later in the preseason will be good enough.

See the Culver City preview for info on their opening game against West Torrance this Friday.

Lawndale comes into their season opener ranked #10 in the CIFss D-5 poll. Calpreps power ratings have them at #9 in D-5, just ahead of Moorpark. They must have high aspirations because they have stacked their schedule with some tough preseason opponents. Probably a good thing as none of their Ocean league opponents will be as tough as their first 4 games nor as tough as most of what will make the D-5 playoffs.

They travel to Ventura County to play St. Bonaventure (1-0) who beat El Camino Real 26-10 in their opener. The closeness of that score leads me to think that an upset is possible. But it is usually good to be the team coming in with a game under their belt. And watching last year's Lawndale games will probably give you a pretty good idea of what you will face this year.

After this week it might be getting even tougher as they face Crespi, then Leuzinger, then San Pedro before they can relax against Torrance and their first league game against Santa Monica. Lawndale should be a lock to make the D-5 playoffs as they are likely to finish 1st in league and no way drop below 2nd.

SDSU’s Rashaad Penny Named MW Offensive Player of the Week

Senior running back earns first career offensive player-of-the-week honor

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- San Diego State running back Rashaad Penny (Norwalk, Calif.) has been named the Mountain West Offensive Player of the Week, the league announced Monday. It is the first career league offensive award for the senior, who has twice previously selected as the MW Special Teams Player of the Week.

Penny ran for 197 yards and two touchdowns on a career-high 21 carries in just three quarters to lead the Aztecs to a 38-17 victory over UC Davis in the 2017 opener Saturday night at San Diego Stadium. The 197 yards were the fifth most in FBS this season, just 11 yards shy of a career high and the third most in a SDSU season opener in its Division I history (since 1969).

Penny, who also added an 18-yard kick return to finish with 215 all-purpose yards, gave San Diego State a 10-0 lead in the first quarter with a 61-yard touchdown run. He later added a 9-yard TD late in the second in what proved to be the game-winning score, putting the Aztecs up, 24-3, at the half.

Penny now has six career 100-yard rushing games (all over the last 11 contests), which ranks in a tie for the 15th most in SDSU history. He scored multiple rushing touchdowns for the fourth time (all over the last nine games), and now has 17 career rushing touchdowns and 26 overall scores. Penny, who has 22 touchdowns (16 rushing, three receiving and three kick return) over San Diego State’s last 19 games, is 18th on the school’s all-time rushing list with 1,605 yards.

The Aztecs, who are receiving votes in both the AP Top 25 and Amway Coaches poll, play at Arizona State at 8 p.m. PT Saturday in Tempe. Both SDSU and the Sun Devils are 1-1.

Westview defeats Rancho Buena Vista 28-0

2 touchdowns each by Joe Bennett and Marcellus Kamins pace Westview to 2nd shutout win

By David A. Willauer-Contributing Writer-Rancho Buena Vista High School-Vista, CA-After a 41-0 win over the Fallbrook Warriors last Friday, the Wolverines of Westview High School went to the ground game and it had worked as the offensive line opened the holes for the running game again along with their second shutout of the season as they shutout 2 opponents 69-0 this time defeated the Longhorns of Rancho Buena Vista by a 28-0 score on 2 touchdown runs each by Joe Bennett for 2 and 22 yards and contributed with 4 carries for 24 yards along with teammate Marcellus Kamins of 5 and 19 yards along with 11 carries for 41 yards.

Kyle Williams Westview Head Football Coach: "Coming into tonight's game we knew that Rancho Buena Vista was going to bring a lot of heat on us but our first concern was to make sure that we protect up front and did well on that so we gave our QB time made great reads along with good accurate passes." "We went in tonight's game that we will take as to what they had given us, we felt that we had a difficult time running the ball along with running straight drop back passes as our quick game was there for us as we moved the ball in the first two quarters and went to the running game in the second half."

For the Westview Wolverines at 2-0 qb Beau Nelson threw the ball 21 completions out of 37 attempts for 296 yards, Kquamei Wolford 5 receptions for 77 yards Ben O Brian 5 receptions for 115 yards.

For the Longhorns at Rancho Buena Vista at 1-1 Dorien Richardson led all rushers as he carried the ball 20 times for 95 yards Matthew Llerenas 6 completions out of 13 attempts for 34 yards.

Westview will take on the Dons of Catheral Catholic on the road while the Longhorns of Rancho Buena Vista will go up the road a bit as they take on archrival Vista both games are Friday, September 8, 2017 at 7:00 pm

Division 11 week 1 preview

Arcadia maintained it's number 1 ranking in both the maxpreps & calpreps rankings and moved from 4th, to #1 in the CIFss D-11 poll, after their 20-10 victory over D-8 La Salle of Pasadena. La Salle is still ranked #9 in the CIFss & calpreps rankings although I am not sure why if calpreps is projecting them to only go 4-6 & finish 6th (last) in the very tough Angeles league. The team has virtually no chance of making the playoffs with how stacked the Angelus league is.

Speaking of tough Angelus league opponents, Arcadia faces Angelus league favorite Cathedral this week. Arcadia may be the current D-11 number 1 team, but Cathedral is #9 in both the D-2 CIFss poll & calpreps rankings. I doubt Arcadia is in the same class. This week, and next week against Hart, should have Arcadia plenty ready to battle any tough teams in their own Pacific league.

Arroyo of El Monte has the #2 ranking in D-11. They held on for 35-28 victory over Covina in week 0. They face Temple City (1-0) this week who could be said to have upset Pasadena Poly 21-7 last week. Poly has had a reputation of being a decent small school program in past years but may be struggling a bit with a small roster this year and breaking in a new QB. Poly was projected to go 9-1 & finish first in their Prep league. They were preseason rated as the #8 team in D-10. After the loss to Temple City, their ranking has dropped to #25 in the calpreps D-10 rankings.

Temple City is a program that has been struggling mightily for some years now, getting relegated to D-13 and projected to finish 5th (dead last) in the Rio Hondo league going 3-6 overall. However I believe they have already got a W in their first game that they were not supposed to get. There was a time in the 70's when Temple City had some championship seasons. Has a sleeping Ram awoken in Los Angeles? The CIFss poll jumped them up to the #6 team in the D-13 poll as does the calpreps ranking matching at #6 in D-13. This game is still rated as a slightly easier W for Arroyo this week, than last, but can Temple City surprise again? The Temple City D is likely to have a much tougher test against the experienced veteran Arroyo QB Ernesto Camacho.

More to follow on D-11, but that is it for tonight.

Culver City preview

The Culver City Centaurs 2017 football is poised for a potentially big year. The roster includes some serious offensive talent that could make for an even more explosive high scoring offense than the team had last year.

Senior QB Jonathan Martin is back to lead the pass first air raid offense after throwing for over 3,200 yards and 41 TD's in 11 games last year. This will be his third and final year as the starting QB for the Centaurs. His health is key to the success of the team. The skill level of any back-up QB is unknown at this time. Santa Monica transfer Tee Barnes (a JR) is the only other listed QB on the roster. The team is also suggesting Martin is fleet of foot (4.4) although they kept him mostly in the pocket last year after he suffered an ACL injury in his first varsity season as a sophomore.

One wide receiver is senior University of Nevada-Reno commit Charles Ross. Ross 6'1", 170 has 4.5 speed and great receiver hands. Ross had 975 yards receiving with 12 TD's last season including a long of 67 yards.

The other receiver is senior Alex Smith, a University of Wisconsin commit. He is listed at 6'1" 175, also with 4.5 speed. He likely got the attention of Wisconsin based more upon his kick return and defensive back skills but with that speed he will surely be dangerous.

Running back Brandon Oum returns for his senior year after rushing for 875 yards & 7 TD's with an 8.3 yard per carry average. His longest run went for 70 yards last season.

The biggest question mark for the Centaurs, and it is a big one, is whether last year's super sophomore Kevin McGuire will be suiting up for CC. He explored playing for the #2 team in Nevada, Liberty, this season but some recent tweets and roster updates suggest he is likely to be in a Centaur uniform. Why is this big? McGuire had 62 receptions for 922 yards and 9 TD's as well as another 333 yards rushing and 4 TD's for CC last season as a sophomore. Needless to say, he will be a big asset to any team.

The offense returns 8 starters from a team that scored an average of more than 40 points per game last year.

The kicking game should be in the reliable hands of Robert Simon and Carlos Barillo. Simon handled most of the KO & punt duties last year while Barillo went 59 out of 61 on his PAT's and 7 of 9 on FG's.

The big question mark most recent years for CC has been will they have any beef on the line of scrimmage? And while they will still not be the biggest or deepest team on the line, even within their own league, recent roster updates suggest they will have more depth and size than last year. They also return several starters among last year's linemen.

The defense returns 6 starters from last year's team. They averaged giving up 27 points a game, but usually not a problem for the high scoring offense to offset. CC did not score less than 31 points in any one game last year. If the defense is any better than last year and the offense is everything that it could be, the sky is the limit for this team.

Culver City hosts Mira Costa in what I assume is a scrimmage this Thursday, the 24th. They open play at home, September 1st, the Friday of Labor Day weekend, against West Torrance.

In the Ocean League, Culver City is projected to finish second

Seniors blitz Juniors 124-103 in Nor Cal Clash

The Class of 2018 (Seniors) blitzed the class of 2019 (Juniors) 124-103 in the 8th annual Nor Cal Clash on Sunday afternoon at Contra Costa College.

Senior James Akinjo of Salesian High led all scorers with 42 points, setting an all-time record in the Clash. He broke the previous record of 41 set by current Orlando Magic forward Aaron Gordon of Archbishop Mitty with 41 in 2012.

Seniors Jake Wojcik (Bellarmine) and Elias King (Jesuit) chipped in with 17 points each. King and Mason Forbes (Folsom) each had 12 rebounds for the class of 2018. Logan Johnson (St.Francis-Mountain View) had 5 assists to lead the seniors and all players in the game.

Junior Bryce Johnson of St. Mary's-Stockton led his team with 22 points while Isaiah Hawthorne (Tracy) had 16. Jovon McClanahan (Salesian) and Jay Allen-Tovar (Valley Christian-San Jose) each had 8 rebounds for the class of 2019.

The all-time series now stands at 5-3 in favor of the Seniors.

San Marcos Knights comes back after 10-0 deficit and wins big over Vista

By David A. Willauer-Contributing Writer-San Marcos High School-San Marcos, CA-Friday, August 25, 2017-After a 2016 opening day win over the Panthers at Vista High to spoil the new football stadium along with a very key win over Vista at San Marcos in the next round in the CIF 2016 Football playoffs, after a 3 fumbles for the Knights and a good defensive effort by the Panthers that caused the turnovers and jumped out to an early 10-0 lead on Josh Sellers 23 yard field goal and Desmond Taua's 30 yard fumble return.

In the 2nd quarter, the Knights got on the board as QB Mike Hastings (18 completions out of 33 attempts for 241 yard and 1 interception threw a 13 yard pass to Quinn Roth for a TD and came within 10-7. The Vista offense started the ball on their 32 yard line and Quinn Roth's 23 yard fumble return for a touchdown with 2 PAT's Good put the Knights up and led 14-10 at the half.

In the 3rd quarter the Knights took control of the game as Bill Belinski scored on a 2 yard run, Josh Barnes (7 carries for 42) scored on a 5 yard run and a 25 yard run by Ethan Cline (1 rush for 25 yards) put the Knights up 35-10 .

In the 4th Quarter after Caleb Mancini connected on a 35 yard field goal to go up 38-10 the Panthers struck back as Dan Hall (4 carries for 53 yards) scored on a 2 yard touchdown run and teammate Tyler Davies his 2nd touchdown pass as he threw a 23 yarder to the very talented Desmond Taua (1 reception for 23 yards) for 23 yard as time ran out to make the final score 38-22.

The San Marcos Knights improve to 1-0 and will be at Bonita Vista next Friday Night September 1, 2017 while Vista falls to 0-1 and will take on San Pasqual at home next Friday Night September 1, 2017 starting times for both games 7:00 pm.

Division 11 preview.

In Division 11, I am tracking 3 polls: the CIF Southern Section poll, the calpreps.com preview rankings, and the maxpreps rankings. Valley View, the defending Division 11 champion, was moved up to Division 10 this year.

Arcadia is ranked #1 by the calpreps preview rankings and the maxpreps rankings. They are 4th in the CIF poll. Arcadia played in D-11 last year, losing just 22-21 to D-11 finalist Quartz Hill in the playoffs. Culver City faced Arcadia in 7 on 7 passing league over the summer, an area which should be a strength for CC, but Arcadia was able to prevail.

Arcadia should have many of their offensive contributors back from last year's team including the starting QB & RB. They also have numerous underclassmen that played extensively on defense last year. Only a CB, a MLB & a WR on offense are the key replacements needed off the line of scrimmage.

They look a little thin in linemen numbers, but not terribly undersized. Arcadia is projected to finish 2cnd in the 8 team Pacific league but that is no guarantee at this point. There are potential worthy challengers. They must finish at least 3rd to lock in a playoff spot.
Arcadia travels to LaSalle of Pasadena for a Friday, the 25th, week 0 contest.

Culver City is #1 in the week 0 CIF poll, #2 in the calpreps preview rankings and #4 in the maxpreps rankings. See my preview write-up on Culver City for details on the team.

Rancho Mirage is ranked #2 in the CIF poll, #5 in maxpreps & #6 on calpreps. Rancho Mirage made it to the D-12 finals last year, losing by just 1 point to Arroyo. Their starting QB returns after a modest statistical year as a sophomore and they lost their key RB but still have a speedy WR/DB Marques Prior and a large roster of 63 players. They are projected to go 9-1 and finish first in the De Anza league so they are likely a lock to be seen in the playoffs.

While St. Genevieve is not ranked at all in the CIF poll, they did receive #3 rankings by both calpreps.com and maxpreps. The Valiants lost badly to Rancho Mirage in the D-12 semi-finals last year.

All 4 D-12 semifinalists were moved up to D-11 this year.

Last year's starting QB, Anthony Smets, returns for his senior year after throwing for over 2,000 yards last year & 18 TD's. They lost their best RB to graduation but still have Ray Beauchamp who carried the ball for over 600 yards last year and 10 TD's. They have a large roster of 63 players listed. They are projected to go 9-1 and finish 2nd in the 4 team Santa Fe league. One upset loss in league could cause them to have to hope for an at-large playoff berth. The Valiants travel to Poly of Sun Valley for a Thursday, the 24th, week 0 contest.

Arroyo of El Monte is also unranked in the CIF poll but has garnered a #2 ranking by Maxpreps and a #4 by calpreps. They were last year's D-12 champions. They should have back their outstanding QB Ernesto Camacho, who threw for over 3,100 yards in 14 games in his sophomore year while accounting for 35 TD's through the air against just 6 interceptions. Virtually all of their significant running backs from last year should be back. They will have to replace a good chunk of their receiving corps but have at least 2 significant pass catchers back from last season. The team is projected to go undefeated in the regular season. They appear to be deep and big on the line. They look dangerous, from a D-11 perspective. Arroyo hosts Covina in a Thursday, the 24th, week 0 contest.

Oak Park is ranked #3 in the CIF poll but #20 by calpreps and maxpreps. The Eagles lost badly to Arcadia in the opening round of the D-11 playoffs last year after barely qualifying. They are losing a lot of their skill players but do return at least one experienced RB and receiver. They are high on their new QB but he only got a cup of coffee worth of playing time at the varsity level last year. The JV team went 9-1. They are projected to finish 2nd in the 4 team Canyon league while going an overall 4-6. An upset loss in league could remove them from playoff selection eligibility, so every game really counts for this team this year.

Highland is ranked 5th in the CIF poll & 8th by calpreps & maxpreps. Highland did not qualify for the playoffs last year out of the 8 team Golden league. They lost to D-11 finalist Quartz Hill by just 3 points, 20-17, during league play. They have 7 returning starters on offense and 5 on the D. They are big and strong on the lines, but they looked shaky at QB last year and lost their star RB to graduation. They have 52 players on roster.

Hillcrest of Riverside is ranked #5 by calpreps & #6 by maxpreps. They did not make the CIF poll for week 0. They were shut out 23-0 by Rancho Mirage in the second round of the D-12 playoffs last year. They have 7 starters returning on both offense & defense. They have a speedy running back returning this year, and an even speedier QB, Cordell LaBrie, that can run 4.45, and 1,486 yards running and another 1,637 passing last year. They are projected to go 8-2 and finish 2cnd in league. This team will obviously go as far as LaBrie can carry them.

Other teams of note are Westminster, Pasadena, Heritage Christian of Northridge, Eisenhower, Cabrillo/Lompoc, Katella, Sultana & Xavier Prep.

LA36 to televise eight City Section regular season football games

August 24, 2017 GRANADA HILLS, Calif. – LA36 announced recently the decision to televise eight Los Angeles City Section regular season football games for the 2017 season.

The coverage begins tomorrow on August 25 with View Park hosting Locke Charter High School. All games will be tape delayed and replayed on LA36 the following week.

“We are thrilled that LA36 is providing the opportunity to televise these games,” veteran playby-play announcer Randy Rosenbloom said. “The City Section deserves this and we are happy for the exposure it will bring to these programs and players.”

For the very first time, the inaugural “Rosenheimer Bowl” will be played between long time East Valley League rivals, North Hollywood and Polytechnic. Rosenbloom is an alum of North Hollywood while Los Angeles Times sports prep writer, Eric Sondheimer, graduated from Polytechnic.

The winner of the annual clash will receive a perpetual trophy. Rosenbloom and Sondheimer have been covering the LA City Section for more than 40 years.

Additional future games could be added to the following schedule as the season progresses.

LA36 2017 CIFLACS Football Schedule
8/25 Locke at View Park
8/31 Sherman Oaks CES at Animo Robinson (2015 champions vs. 2016 champions in 8-man)
9/8 LaSalle at Birmingham
9/22 Hamilton at Taft
9/22 Arleta at St Genevieve
10/13 Poly at Grant
10/27 Poly at North Hollywood (Rosenheimer Bowl)
11/3 Monroe at Poly (homecoming)

Games and starting times subject to change

Ocean League preview

In the Ocean League, Culver City is projected to finish second, but there will be challenges to achieving that.

Lawndale
is the favorite and will be a tough nut to crack. Their QB, Jaden Hamler returns for his senior year after throwing for over 2,000 yards with 23 TD's against just 2 interceptions. He has 4.6 speed and also rushed for 599 yards and 5 TD's. He has a good-sized offensive line, and super talented RB Jordan Wilmore is back after running for 2289 yards and 24 TD's last season. Their JV program went 9-1 last year. Fortunately, CC will not have to deal with them in the playoffs as Lawndale is in Division 5.

Of more immediate concern is the El Segundo Eagles. CC faces them the first week of league play. The Eagles do not return many starters, so they will be young, but the JV team went 8-2 and they may have time to mature in the preseason before they play CC. They will be well coached by veteran coach Steve Shevlin. The Eagles will be playing in Division 7.

Santa Monica is projected to finish 4th in league. The team has struggled in recent years but last year's JV team put in an 8-2 effort and the team returns 8 starters on offense and 9 on defense. Any team with that much experience & depth is dangerous. Samo will play in Division 10. Samo will host Segerstrom of Santa Ana in a Friday week 0 game. This will be good first test for Samo. Segerstrom went 11-2, 4-1 finishing second last year in the Golden West League, making it to the Division 12 semifinals. The Golden West League appears to be of similar strength to the Ocean League. Segerstrom will play in D-11 this year.

Hawthorne is projected to finish 5th but has enough talent to be dangerous. Their offensive line is big, usually a problem for Culver City, the running game solid. They are inexperienced at QB but will not face CC until the third week of league play. Hawthorne is in Division 12. Hawthorne travels to face La Canada in a Friday week 0 game. La Canada may be a good first test to see how well they will compete come time for Ocean League play.

The Beverly Hills program has been struggling for several years now and is once again projected to finish last. Their schedule says they do not have big expectations. Culver City faces them the last game of the regular season. Not much of test perhaps, but should be an easy W while other league teams are battling more competitive adversaries. Beverly Hills has a Friday week 0 game against Carnagie of Riverside, defending champions of the very weak Arrowhead League.

Jeff Meyer ready for 2nd year at Rancho Buena Vista Football

Jeff Meyer son of former El Camino football coach readies for 2nd season at RBV

By David A. Willauer-Contributing Writer-Wednesday, August 16, 2017-Rancho Buena Vista High School-Vista, CA: After a rebuilding year of 3-7 Jeff Meyer will be starting his second year with the Longhorns of Rancho Buena Vista High School and has a lot of positions to fill.

Assistant Head Football Coach Mike Darlington along with Head Coach Jeff Meyer spoke about the team.

Head Coach Mike Darlington: "We are going to be a solid football squad and will run the ball very well this year and will be decent on defense."

Coach Meyer: Quarterbacks "We have three individuals who are battling for the quarterback job in Scott Meyer, Shane Thompson and Matt Lleneras we will sort that position out as soon as we get to the first game against Irvine High School."

Coach Meyer " Running Backs: "We have Dorian Richardson who will be starting along with backup Hunter Epps back from last year up from the JV squad last year as they will be explosive in the backfield."

Coach Meyer: "Offensive Line" "Our offensive line is learning a little bit as we return Edgar Robles along with other returning players in as Will Osterhaus, Zach Gonzales Chris Christie."

Coach Darlington: Defensive Line "We should be more athletic then what we have been before in years past, we have decent size but won't be big but we should take in quite a few returning players in Alex Diverde at inside linebacker, Will McNeary at outside linebacker, at defensive line we have Austin Sunseri, defensive back Isaiah Moore and Jordan Roberts."

Coach Meyer: "For kicking and punting that will be a tossup as we have Nick Flete, Arturro Arreguin and Dan Rogozinski 1 might punt, 1 might do PAT's and 1 might kickoff as they are all battling for the jobs on the football team"

Coach Meyer: " We open up our first game against Irvine High School from the Southern Section they have been up and down and in numbers, they are down but their coach does a good job." "Our second game we play Westview up here as we defeated them as their place last year on a blocked field goal they will come back to our place and will give us revenge as our first couple of games will be battle tests for us and to show us how great of a football team were going to be."

Joe Early Ready for 16th Year with Palomar Comets

Joe Early ready for his 16th season at Palomar Junior College

By David A. Willauer-Palomar College-San Marcos, CA Wednesday, August 16, 2017: Joe Early will be ready for his 16th year as the head football coach at the Comets Palomar College and carries a career record of 86-63 and has built up the program very well along with 2 conference titles. After 2 losing seasons of 4-6, Coach Early knows what to expect for the upcoming season.

Coach Joe Early: "We have quite a few people watching us practice after a year since we were on our field, and have encouraging some guys to do get the job done but is also a learning process as we are getting close but not where we are as of yet but we have to prepare vs. Southwestern College in 3 weeks."

"At quarterback, Matt Romero will be our primary starter for us this year he started for us last season and Ross Ebert will be one of the backups for us." "Ross has come back is stronger and bigger after a year under his belt for us, we anticipated both quarterbacks to do well but Matt is currently our starter." said Coach Early.

"At running back, Josh Bernard hasn't practiced due to grades but we have other outstanding backs in Isaiah Guerrero, who was all conference returner for us last year along with Currie Thomasson who is our big sized back and will give him the ball when we needed to we have 2 smaller scatback backs that will help us when we need them in Zack Goodkin who has comes to us from LaCosta Canyon, if we happen to get Josh Bernard back that will solidify and straighten our running backs." said Coach Early

"At wide receiver we lost Robert Ursua as he is playing Division I, but we return Chase Olsen a redshirt tight end last year and is more of an open set player along with Blake Adamson who is a big athlete who also plays basketball never had the football experience but has a big body and Trevor Gurski who is a 6'6" freshman coming in who has a lot of potential we're young as far as playing experience is concerned which will be a wait and see ." "We have 7 or 8 guys that are talented at those positions we are going to keep some fresh players on our roster that will help us to get into situations in the 3rd or 4th period of the football game last year we didn't have the depth at wide receiver." said coach Early.

"On the offensive line we have Mike Childress and Josh Pichette back from last year Preston Johnson who redshirted for us last year is back with us hasn't been a full going as he is taking it slow before he puts the pads on had some shoulder surgery waiting to be cleared for full contact Prab Gill was a part timer last year we have good size but with the offensive line that is a continuity thing they have to play together and to play with a lot of reps our big thing is to get confidence with our squad." said Coach Early.

"On defense we return J D Foxx who redshirted last year, had an excellent camp for us are excited to have him back Chandler Wachholtz who played for us last year will be back were going to be young as far as the defensive line we have young guys coming in and learning the system Carter Couch is a defensive end and Malo Malo who father used to play for us at Palomar on the back side of the defense we have some injuries we don't have the same secondary in their the entire time but once when we get everyone healthy will improve a lot on defense our players are young and are learning the system well along with the experience at playing those positions for us during the season

Dave Rodriguez readies for 3rd year as head coach at Oceanside High

: Dave Rodriguez readies his 3rd year head football at Oceanside High School

By David A. Willauer-8-11-17-Oceanside High School-Oceanside, CA: In his third year as head coach at Oceanside High School known for their football tradition along with winning CIF State and Section titles carries a 17-8 along with 2 playoff appearances in 2015 his first year won a CIF Division title and in 2016 lost to Rancho Bernardo in a first round CIF Division matchup will be ready for the 2017 football season.

Dave Rodriguez: "We have rich tradition as our young men understand what their responsibilities are, we'll be a hard nosed and a little thin in some of the positions, at the same time our kids are doing contact drills on the field as our school will be playing a tough schedule this season along with our competition in the Avocado League."

"On our we will play defending Southern Section and State Champion San Clemente as they are an amazing group of athletes and are very physical and well coached squad." "Our last 2 non league teams will be Mater Dai Catholic along with Avocado League teams in San Pasqual, my friend and head coach Tony Corley." "We also play Mission Hills, San Marcos, Lacosta Canyon Torrey Pines, Carlsbad along with our crosstown rival El Camino as I look forward to the competition." said Coach David Rodriguez.

At Quarterback, will be different this year as Alex Miller who has been an understudy to Max Sheppard for a couple of years gets the job and carries a 4.0 GPA, is very intelligent and has matured into a young man as has a grasp of what he has to do on the field and is learning the system very well." said the Oceanside Pirate Coach.

"Our running backs for us will be Jonathan Singey who doubles at linebacker along with Pirate teammate Michael Linnin as both players have emerged at camp and will split some time, we also have Caesar Mendoza who reminds me of a Darren Sproules type back and is tough as nails those are 3 of the running backs we are in our spread offense." said coach Rodriguez

"Our tight ends are modified running backs Armond Felicili, Darrel Ball and Kyram Beacham and Dylan York there will be some new faces with a lot of athletic ability and are coached up everyday and brother Elijah Felicili will be in the rotation so it's a good mix with a good chemistry were excited to block hard were getting tired of hitting each other in practice but I'm looking forward to a different color jersey." said Dave Rodriguez

"At the Tight ends we have Jordan and brother Kyron Duson along with Donovan's brother Kiki Laia which will be unique as we have a set of brothers and cousins that are on the team." "We also have Hunter Stoll and Ethan Venegas who transferred to us from Arizona will both be working in the mix." said Coach Rodriguez.

"Our offensive line we replace 8 guys and return 3 starters from last season in Donovan Laie, who is 6'6" 315 pounds, Mason Buczek 6'2" 285 pounds and Isaiah Kaleopa Tuisee were looking big on the front line our kids have been training for jobs in football." said Head Coach Dave Rodriguez

"Our defense will be a veteran bunch which is good as we return our leading tackler Armond Fesili Marks from last season along with teammates, John Segi, Jordan Duson, brother Keilan Duson, on the edge we have Donovan Laie, Molson Moses Tauililli who joins us from the Los Angeles area as his family moved back to the area." "It is great to have him Kyrin Beacham who as a sophomore didn't get a lot of time along with Julian Hicks, Azizi Hearn and teammate Micah Linnen will be back in the swing. We have guys back more on defense that is the way it goes in high school football." said Head Coach Dave Rodriguez.

For the punting and kicking chores for the last 2 years I had Jake Gerardi who has been my kicker for the last 2 years and I am looking at Lucas Solberg will take over the kicking and punting duties, he also plays soccer and kicks left footed which changes a lot, and has learned to transfer the soccer talent on the football side." said Coach Rodriguez

"For me to improve a lot from this year I have an excellent coaching staff that are with us this season but we have a new quarterback coach who was an alumnus here at Oceanside, named Joe Pao Pao ,he has played and coached in the Canadian Football League for years." said Coach Rodriguez.
