Ramifications of a truncated season for guys like Ziaire Williams. Josh Christopher, Evan Mobley

Thoughts from Rivals National Basketball Analyst Corey Evans:

"The uncertainty of the fall college football season has forced some that may have more certain futures in the sport to opt out instead of risking their draft stock or health. Could this trend be a sign of things to come with college basketball?

The simple answer is that we don't know. We don't even know what the college basketball season will look like. We do know that the Pac-12 will not play games until Jan. 1 at the earliest, and it would be a surprise if they were the only power conference to delay the start of their season.

Compared to college football, where only third-year players can enter the draft, practically anyone outside of enrolling freshmen can enter the NBA Draft. The NBA extended the window for early entrants to Aug. 17 and, knowing that the 2020-21 season may be cut in half, it has given players an opportunity to make a more educated decision for their future.

That Aug. 17 deadline didn't didn’t mean much for freshmen entering the sport like Ziaire Williams, Josh Christopher, and Evan Mobley, three five-stars that are expected to play in the Pac-12 this season. They are all practically guaranteed to be first-round selections in the 2021 NBA Draft. If there is no season until Jan. 1 or later, would they wait things out and hope that they do not struggle out of the gates? There will be no non-conference portion of the season to shake off the rust and to acclimate to the college game.

Would it be prudent for those elite players to opt out before beginning their college career? Does the G League route become more enticing? Is it a comparable decision that Surratt just made with just training for next year’s draft? These are the conversations taking place for a select few right now, but that number will only multiply if more conferences follow the Pac-12's lead."

Will the NCAA postpone in person visits until the spring?

Here are some thoughts from Rivals.com Basketball Analyst Corey Evans:

"Don’t bet on in-person recruiting taking place in any form until at least Jan. 1. As of now, such a restriction is in place until Aug. 31 and while I heard whispers last week that it would be extended at least another month, it is only a matter of time before the NCAA and NABC come together and decide to ban such activity for the rest of the calendar year.

Even if, for some odd reason, Sept. 1 arrives and coaches can then go back onto the road and begin to recruit, and official visits are allowed, I can’t see many taking part. Over the past few weeks, the amount of coaches that I have talked to that have said they would feel comfortable going on the road to complete in-person evaluations of prospects, or bring recruits to campus and let them mingle with its staff and team, could be counted on one hand alone."

Will 5-star CB Domani Jackson reclassify to class 2021?

There was some smoke this week that five-star cornerback Domani Jackson (Mater Dei) could reclassify to the 2021 class so he could get to college sooner, but Wednesday at the Winner's Circle workout in Corona, Jackson said it's not true and he plans to stay in the 2022 class.

That's big for Mater Dei because Jackson is one of the best prospects in the rising junior class.

Are college coaches/recruiters watching live streams of summer AAU events?

Rivals.com Basketball Recruiting Analyst Corey Evans had this answer:

"You bet. College coaches have not been allowed out on the road since the sport was shut down in the middle of March and ever since have been salivating at recent game film. While the live periods have been canceled for the remainder of the summer and with there being a decent chance that in-person evaluating could be disallowed for the remainder of the calendar year, live streaming travel games have been the saving grace for us here at Rivals, and for staffs throughout the nation.

"With a number of travel events to come over the next several weeks, expect for recruiting boards to change and new offers to be handed out thanks to the play of those taking part in such events. For coaching staffs not exhausting the live streaming option, it would be like not looking at a textbook for an open book test. Read up because the answers are right there in front of you every weekend."

Fate of sports in the upcoming school year to be decided soon

CIF-SS commissioner Rob Wigod is hosting a press conference on Monday at 1pm and will reveal what fate the CIF State office has decided is planned for the 2020-21 high school athletic calendar.

My guess is that there are probably two options: no sports for the school year, or no sports until early 2021. Hopefully, a firm plan will be set out one way or the other.

Mater Dei D-1 prospect may have transferred out

I just noticed that Gus the Bus Yalden is now listed in our Rivals data base as playing for The Ashvillle School in North Carolina. He has played in some summer events and the rising soph's recruitment is really picking up.

In just the last month Yalden has picked up offers from Auburn, Florida State, Iowa, Maryland, Missouri, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Rutgers, West Virginia, and Wisconsin.

I'll look into this and see if he has officially transferred out of Mater Dei or if this is just until the pandemic gets under control.

Devyn King (Serra-2019) and his current outlook at Maryland

From behind a paywall on another website, here's the current status of Serra's DB Devyn King who committed to Maryland:

2020 OUTLOOK: The Terps haven’t shied away from playing true freshmen. Both Deonte Banks and Lavonte Gater carved out significant roles during their first years on campus. Depending how quickly King develops, he could work his way into the rotation as well, particularly because corner is not one of Maryland's deeper positions. He seems to be further along from a fundamental standpoint than many young defensive backs coming out of high school. King could be a redshirt candidate, though, if he's not ready to contribute right away and some of UMD's other returning cornerbacks step up.

Miller Moss to Mater Dei

Alemany senior quarterback Miller Moss is transferring to Mater Dei according to Eric Sondheimer of the LA Times, who posted a story on the Times website within the past hour. The four-star USC commit replaces Alabama signee Bryce Young as the signal caller for Bruce Rollinson's Monarchs.

Moss's move makes Mater Dei the top team in the state in my opinion. He joins a loaded offense headlined by Oregon commit Kyron Ware-Hudson at wide receiver and the addition of one of Northern California's top players in junior Raleek Brown of Stockton Edison at running back.

Nike decides to cancel entire EYBL summer season. No Peach Jam either

Nike's Elite Youth Basketball League announced Saturday night that its 2020 season is done before it could ever begin. The April live period was previously canceled, and July was officially nixed earlier this month. Nike's statement on Saturday night confirms that even if an adjustment can be made for allowable in-person recruiting events later in the year, Nike won't be hosting any youth basketball gatherings amid the COVID-19 pandemic that's killed more than 105,000 Americans in less than three months.
