North County Boys Basketball Wrap By David A. Willauer-Contributing Writer-1-31-18

The Frogs of Guajome Park Academy park at 15-5 beind the 26 point performance by Ty Ballard, 22 by Michael Simmons and 16 by Cristian Garrett defeated the Firebirds of Del Lago Academy from Escondido by a 86-45 score.

Del Lago was led by Wesley Coul with 13 points.

Guajome Park will host Rock Academy on Friday, February 9th in a 7:00 pm tipoff



The Torrey's of LaJolla Country Day School at 16-7 behind Jason Taylor's 27 point performance, 18 by Ryan Langborg and 14 by Ben Daugherty by a 79-73 win over the Patriots of Orange Glen High School at 15-7. The Patriots were led by Angel Nieves with 18 points, 16 by Damien Miller, 14 by Andres Tovar and 12 by Caden Palmer.

Orange Glen's next game will be at Francis Parker on Friday, February 2nd. Tipoff is at 7:00 pm

Oceanside vs. El Camino Boys Basketball


By David A. Willauer-Contributing Writer-Friday, January 26, 2018-In a boys rival basketball contest 23 points by Jalen Flanagan, 12 each by Keavie Love, Deaundra McNair and Brad Yasucochi paced the El Camino Wildcats at 13-8 as they defeated the Pirates of Oceanside at 13-8 by a 73-70 score.

Emmanuel Grandison led the Pirates with 16 points 15 by Dru Morgan, Donovan Laie with 12 and 10 by Jacob Camargo.

The El Camino Wildcats will host the Vista Panthers on Tuesday, January 30, 2018 while the Pirates of Oceanside will host the Knights of San Marcos on Tuesday, January 30, 2018. Tipoff is at 7:00 pm

The LA City Section will have 20 leagues total beginning in the Fall of 2018. There are two new leagues yet to be named.

Here are the major changes:

• Legacy moves from the Southern League to the Eastern League for all sports.

• Jordan leaves the Eastern League and into a new league (yet to be titled).

• Rancho Dominguez moves from the Exposition League to the Marine League for all sports except football.

• Washington and King Drew leave the Marine League and into a new league (yet to be titled).

• Washington would play football in the Exposition League and no longer in the Marine League.

• Fremont and Locke are members of the Coliseum League in all sports, including football.

• Manual Arts becomes a member of the Exposition League in all sports, including football. They leave the Coliseum League.

Culver City hosts Beverly Hills in a Ocean League showdown for first place in the Ocean League, both boys & girls. All 4 teams are 4-0 in league play.

Willauer-Contributing Writer-1-25-18-In a Coastal League Boys Basketball contest, the Eagles of Santa Fe Christian High School improve their record at 11-9 on the season behind the 18 point performance by James Mcroskey, 14 by Trevan Martin and 12 by Spencer Rydin as they defeated the Patriots of Orange Glen at 13-7 by a 62-48 score.

The Patriots were led by 19 points by Angel Nieves, 10 by Adam Nieves.

Orange Glen's next game is on 1-26-18 when they host The Bishop's School

The Culver City Centaur's (17-4) hosted the Beverly Hills Normans(14-5) in a early showdown for first place in the Ocean League. Both teams came into the contest 4-0 in league, having faced all of their other league opponents already. The Centaurs were ranked 97th in the state, while the Normans were 146th. Both teams had their moments in the first quarter with the Norman's sophomore guard Arbri Gillis shining as one of the most outstanding players on the court. Gillis was cool under pressure and easily sunk 3 pointers when unguarded and could drive to the basket as well, knowing just how to lay it up off the glass even with her modest size/height. The Centaurs used a full court trap defense a lot early in the contest and it gave them enough positive results to keep them in the contest at 13-13 after 1 quarter.

• While Gillis was a multi-talented player and star for the Normans, her supporting cast consisted of several players who had a particular strength that they were able to take advantage of. One player was a speedy attacker who was capable of & wanting to take it to the basket on most every possession. While Gillis was the main outside shooter, senior Megan Saghian showed that she could also sink the 3 pointer on more than one occasion. And sophomore center Cheyanne Moawad was a force near the basket putting in several buckets on offensive rebounds. Another was a sniper at the free-throw line. This combination of Gillis and her role players allowed the Normans to take the lead at 22-16 at the half. The Centaurs struggled to solve the chemistry of success that the Normans had mixed up falling behind 38-29 after 3 quarters.
• The Centaurs were in need of a spark and senior guard Haley Yamamoto provided it with two 3 point daggers close in time to each other that brought the Centaurs to within 5. With the Centaur girls confidence restored, they returned to an aggressive style of play that challenged every potential Norman's rebound and pass. Good offensive and defensive efforts were provided by senior guard Lauren Jones. Senior Angel Morris, junior Heaven Cooper and sophomore Leah Howard provided the aggressive front court for the Centaurs that fought for every rebound and any attempt to pass the ball inside. Junior Alyse Hayes and sophomore Junie Dickson provided some additional offensive firepower while Hayes also helped handle the ball and Dickson shined as a defender. This Centaur chemistry exploded with success in the fourth quarter and they came roaring back to tie the game at 42 with 2:38 to play. The rest of the game went right down to the wire with the Centaurs leading 48-46 with 13.4 seconds left, but the Normans had posession of the ball and one last chance to steal the victory. The Centaur girls defensive skills stopped the final Normans attack and Culver won 48-46.
• This should secure at least a tie for the league championship between the Normans & the Centaurs unless either team has a brain fart against the next most worthy opponent, the Santa Monica Vikings. If everything goes as is likely, if the Centaurs want to win the title outright, they will have to do it on the home court of Beverly Hills in the last game of the regular season.

Taurus Samuels was the leading scorer for the 16-5 Vista with 16. San Marcos had Kody Cluvet with 21 and Elijah Randall with 10.

San Marcos will take on rival Mission Hills at home while Vista will take on rival Rancho Buena Vista at RBV tapoff times at 7:00 pm

El Camino defeats Rancho Buena Vista 62-48 in Boys Basketball

By David A. Willauer-Contributing Writer-27 points by Jalen Flanagan and 12 by Brad Yasukochi paced the Wildcats of El Camino at 11-8 to a 62-48 win over the Longhorns of Rancho Buena Vista at 15-6.

RBV was led by Jack Bailey and Patrick Mclachlan each with 11 points.

The Longhorns will host school rival Vista on Friday, January 26 while El Camino will be at Oceanside game times at 7:00 pm.

"Word on the street" is that that this may be the last year that the Trinity League will have a home and home 10 game league schedule. Next year they will just play one round of 5 games to settle the league.

Maranatha Christian School defeated Guajome Park by a 71-68 score. The Frogs were led by Michael Simmons with 23 Ty Ballard with 17 and Cristian Garrett with 16.

At Oceanside High School the Vista Panthersat 15-5 behind Jordan Hilstock's 21 points Dartmouth College bound Taurus Samuels with 16 and 12 by Makiah Morris as they ride a 5 game win streak as they defeated the Pirates of Oceanside by a 72-41 score. Jacob Camargo led with 18 and 12 by Dru Morgan.

In an Ocean League contest, the Hawks of Escondido Adventist Academy behind the 18 point performance of Ethan Davis, 14 by Alex Tran, 13 by Noah Vanoy and 12 by Tyler Davis as they defeated the Frogs from Guajome Park Academy by a 58-55 score. Tyler Ballard led with 26 points, Michael Simmons with 11.
The Hawks of Escondido Adventist Academy improve to 10-4 on the season while the Frogs of Guajome Park falls to 8-4.

Rancho Buena Vista Boys Basketball Wins 5 games in a row with a 49-46 win over Tri City Christian

Mission Hills defeats Sage Creek in Boys Basketball

By David A. Willauer-Contributing Writer-1-9-18-The Grizzlies of Mission Hills improve their record at 6-6 as they defeated the Bobcats of Sage Creek at 3-4 by a 55-31 score. Nick Sonck scored 12 points for the Bobcats in the loss. With the loss the Bobcats will be at Del Norte High School in a 5:30 pm contest and the Grizzlies of Mission Hills will be at Mt. Carmel on 1-10[-18 at 5:30 pm.

Apparently rule 3319.1 specifies the factors used in determining playoff groupings. What is not clear is how each of these factors are weighted, how is strength of schedule determined. Does a committee have final say on ranking despite what the math says? Here is the quote from the rule book:
#3319. PLAYOFF GROUPINGS
The following procedures for conducting the business of playoff groupings will be in effect for the sports listed below:
Fall – Football, Tennis (Girls), Volleyball (Girls), Water Polo (Boys)
Winter – Basketball (Boys/Girls), Soccer (Boys/Girls), Water Polo (Girls)
Spring – Baseball, Softball, Tennis (Boys), Volleyball (Boys)

#3319.1 Individual schools will be evaluated and placed into divisions on a yearly basis for the sports listed above utilizing a formula which
includes the following factors: regular season record, strength of schedule and Southern Section playoff performance over a twoyear
period. (For example in Baseball and Softball, the data from the 2016 and 2017 seasons will be used to formulate divisions
for the 2018 season. After the 2018 season is concluded, the data from the 2016 season will be removed and the data from the
2017 and 2018 seasons will be used to formulate divisions for the 2019 season.) The formula will be applied to each school
resulting in the creation of competitive equity power rankings for individual schools, using that school’s competitive performance
as the only criteria for establishing playoff divisions.
#3319.2 Once individual school power rankings for each sport are completed, after the conclusion of each sport season, playoff divisions
will be created. Playoff divisions will be published in the Sport Preview for each sport, along with an explanation of the formula
utilized in creating playoff divisions for that sport.

Note: I did not clearly see the formula for playoff division grouping in this last year's preview booklet, but(unless I missed it) perhaps it is an addition to specify the formula for the coming year.
