Los Angeles – FOX Sports Prime Ticket, in partnership with the CIF Southern Section (CIF-SS), today announced the television and Prep Zone streaming plans for the 2018 high school football season. The complete schedule features 83 games across Prime Ticket and Prep Zone.

Kicking-off the network’s 22nd season of covering CIF-SS football, the schedule begins Friday, August 17 at 7:30PM when Centennial (Corona) hosts Chandler (AZ) in the “FORD CIF Southern Section TV Game of the Week” on Prime Ticket. Complementing TV coverage that night at 7PM, Prep Zone will feature Timpview (Utah) vs. St. John Bosco, Westlake vs. Sierra Canyon, Antelope Valley vs. Grace Brethren, and Uplandvs. La Habra. Prep Zone games this year will be available on FOXSportsWest.com and the FOX Sports app.

Also returning to the weekly lineup, a “Prep Zone Encore” telecast will feature one select Prep Zone game from the week prior to air every Wednesday throughout the season on FOX Sports West or Prime Ticket.

We had previously mentioned Chaminade at Oaks Christian as the big game on Thursday, in the CIFss, plus Servite hosting Bakersfield. Now I will expand on my list of interesting week 0 games, sometimes the interest will be my own self-interest.

Kennedy of La Palma at Katella of Anaheim, why? Katella had a spectacular playoff season last year after going undefeated in league, they took the CIFss Division 11 crown beating Covina 55-49. Then managed to eek their way into the Division 5A state final by beating Monte Vista 36-35 before losing in the state final to Fortuna 54-33. Katella's only other blemish on a 14-2 season was an opening 14-0 loss to Kennedy of La Palma. I would assume that the Katella coaches are talking about the best way to get revenge on Kennedy is this week. Katella has a huge hole to fill in the graduation of QB Nathan Arrington, but the schedule is not one that should present a lot of challenges. Katella once again rates out as by far the best team in the Orange League and should be capable of exacting revenge on Kennedy. Actually they have a good shot at going undefeated in their regular season and almost certainly in league. The next biggest challenge for them may be there week 1 game against Westminster, a fellow Division 11 playoff team last year. Westminster has moved up to Division 9 and Katella to Division 8 and I am once again skeptical that Katella can get anywhere beyond the second round of the playoffs. Of course, I thought the same last year and they went all the way to state. And calpreps.com gives them a preseason rating of #3 in Division 8. Covina, the other team in the D-11 CIFss final last year comes in as the #1 ranked team in Division 9 by Calpreps.com and I think they may be right. That team was loaded with underclassmen talent last year and if they are all back, they will be a lot to handle.

Troy of Fullerton faces Fountain Valley on Thursday. Troy is currently the lowest rated team in the CIFss Division 7, a division I plan to follow closely since my Culver City Centaurs will be trying to reach the playoffs in Division 7 this year, a move up after their Division 11 semi-final loss to Covina.

La Salle of Pasadena has a week 0 game against Arcadia. La Salle is currently 13th ranked(by Calpreps.com) in Division 7 while Arcadia has moved up to Division 8 after a 6 point loss (41-35) to Katella in the second round of the D-11 playoffs last year. This is a Friday night game at Arcadia.

Bonita is at Arroyo of El Monte. Arroyo lost in the second round of the D-11 playoffs and got moved up to D-8. Arroyo should have the services of their excellent QB Ernesto Camacho, as he embarks on his senior season.

Bishop Amat is at Mater Dei.

Santa Barbara is at Buena. Santa Barbara is the early #3 ranked team in D-7. Santa Barbara got moved from D-9, to D-7 despite only going 5-5 last year. Buena is also in D-7. A move up from D-8 after managing to get to the D-8 playoffs last year, losing to Grace Brethren 48-38 in the first round.

Grace Brethren is facing Antelope Valley at Moorpark College on Friday

Golden Valley is at Highland

Hillcrest of Riverside, is at Arlington. Hillcrest lost by 1 point, 21-20, to Arcadia, in the opening round of the D-11 playoffs last year and has moved up to D-10.

Grand Terrace is at North(of Riverside). Grand Terrace is currently ranked 4th if D-7. Grand Terrace made it to the second round of the D-10 playoffs last year.

Lompoc is at Simi Valley, in Simi Coach Jim Benkert's premiere as the head coach of Simi Valley.

The Culver City Centaurs came into the Bonita Air Assault with high aspirations after winning two prior passing tournaments this summer. But this was a step up in competition level compared to the overall strength of the other tournaments. The Centaurs have been moved to the Southern Sections Division 7, after losing, in overtime, in the semi-finals in Division 11 last year. They lost their star QB, Jonathan Martin, who had thrown for over 8,400 yards and 103 TD's in 3 seasons, to graduation, but they have apparently reloaded. They also lost senior receivers Alex Smith to Wisconsin and Charles Ross to the University of Nevada, at Reno. They had the possibility of a talented receiver corps coming back, despite those key personnel losses, and it looks like they are gelling. The Centaurs were able to beat Division 2 Norco 48-42 in quadruple OT and Division 1 Rancho Cucamonga 26-12 in the semi-finals before falling to Division 2 Upland by 30-26 in the final. Passing league plays to the strength of the Centaurs, so it remains to be seen if they will be able to duplicate these kind of results in the fall.

As I previously mentioned, Chaminade will be at Oaks Christian on Thursday, 8/16, for the biggest big game opener in the Southern Section this year. Calpreps.com has a very preliminary rating of #14 in the nation for Oaks with Chaminade coming in at #25.

Bakersfield vs Servite at Santa Ana Stadium is probably the next biggest Thursday, 8/16, contest involving a Southern Section team. Servite might struggle to stay out of the cellar of the monstrously tough Trinity League this year, but should still have enough talent to beat Bakersfield.

By David A. Willauer-Contributing Writer-Rancho Buena Vista High School-Vista, CA-8-2-18-After 2 years as football coach Joe Meyer ,the son of the legendary former coach at Oceanside and El Camino Herb Meyer knows what it takes to build the Longhorn football program up to standards.

In his first year at Rancho Buena Vista in 2016 the Longhorns finished with a 3-8 record going to the CIF Divisional Sectional Playoffs where they fell to the Tigers of Morse High School 36-22. In his second year the Longhorns showed improvement for this upcoming season as they finished with a 6-6 record as they defeated the Sultans of Santana by a 62-43 score in the first round of the CIF Section Playoffs at RBV and fell short of their goal in the quarter finals to the Eagles of San Pasqual by a 27-25 score.

"At running back Dorian Richardson RB led North County in rushing everyone on the field as the players will be looking to key in on him and everyone thinks that we are going to run Dorian all the time as he is the anchor for us on offense and will lead our squad to the CIF's this season. said Head Coach Joe Meyer.

"Other running backs returning from last year is Casey Campbell who played JV squad last year, he will help us out backing up Dorian this year but needs the experience on the field as utility player along with Dmitri Wren as we line up in a 1 back formation. said Coach Meyer.

At tight end slot we have Dan Rogozinski, who also does our kicking field goals, PAT's and kickoffs is returning along with Adam Gadkis who needs to get on the field to get experience at that position." "Isaac Jiminez another returning receiver who will be contributing for our squad along with Skylar Fritchle and Ryan Rhodes, who was our slot back who has contributed for us last year." said Coach Meyer

"On the offensive line we have 5 returners from last season 3 of them started for us last year as we have to make our lineup changes on the line but we tend to be pretty good up front and if we keep everyone healthy we are going to improve a lot." said Coach Meyer.

On defensive we're are going to improved on how our squad was last season but we have outstanding defensive coaches with Coach Castro and Coach Pao Pao as they are putting together good plays for our squad up front and in the secondary." said Coach Meyer

"At the quarterback slot we have Scott Meyer (son) who played off and on for our squad last year behind Matt Llenares. "He didn't get a lot of playing time for us last year but we have to give him on his production in the scrimmage and in our first few games but we have to make sure that he doesn't hurt us by being injured." said Coach Meyer

"We finished our season at 6-6 we took a look at our squad of have a good chance of going where we were in the CIF's, we had a couple of games that we made mistakes as I looked back on the Imperial game where we lost 24-14 early in the season along with the quarter final defeat to San Pasqual 27-25." "Those were the key games that didn't look good but we could have won some games either way but we came back vs the Eagles which was close."

"We open the season at home vs. Westview this season when we played them at our place we fell by a 28-0 score."I didn't think it wasn't a good offensive and defensive battle for us it is one of those ones that we have to put behind us so we can regroup and come back and we did along with playing Westview we have Irvine again and we defeated them 40-37 last year in a shootout at our place then we have the rival Panthers of Vista at their place for this rival game as the stands will be packed we defeated the Panthers last year 23-22 so they will be ready for us." said Coach Meyer.

Chaminade will play at Oaks Christian on a Thursday night, 8/16, to open the season.

A returning All Avocado League offensive linemen that started every single game for us last year as a junior. Very long, very athletic has 3 division 1 offers from Columbia and University of San Diego, and Stetson University.


Team strengths:

Speed on Offense and defense. We have three Running backs that are all 4.5 or faster. Karson Lippert, Aiden Lippert, and Trent Dunn. All three were on the 4x100 CIF track team and if they were stay healthy they would have had a legit chance to win CIF in that event. (Karson pulled a hamstring in the anchor league of the 4x100 in the CIF prelims).

With 7 offensive starters returning, including our two best offensive linemen in Division Scholarship player Luka Trifunovic and rising Junior Trevor Heid, We will have really good experience on that side of the ball. Matty Reynolds as our do everything fullback was our offensive player of the year last year and was at the point of attack at every big player. Our leading Wide Receiver and do everything athlete Cole Miller is back for his 3rd year on Varsity and is poised to have a breakout season.

Marshal Eucker will take the reigns at Quarterback, he is a 6’4’’ 205 Junior to be and he has all of the tools to be a top Quarterback in the county. He was very impressive this spring and summer, getting us to two passing tournament championship games, wining the Escondido tournament and losing in the Championship game vs Lincoln at SDSU going 7 and 1 that day.

Our defense is going to be very physical and active in the front season. Ozzie Nicholas is one of the best defensive players in the county. His recruiting is already starting to pick up as a Junior to be he already has two division 1 offers from Cal and San Diego State. He had a terrific off season training and is only going to get better. Hampton Hurt, Cole Blakeborough, and Matty Reynolds as the other LBs in our 3-3-5 hybrid defense will be great high school players that will help make plays and give opponents fits.

Sam Hussin is an All League returning defensive linemen that has Division 1 Scholarship potential had 24 tackles for loss last year including a team leading 9.5 sacks.


Team weaknesses:

Depth and experience in the defensive backfield and offensive line. Staying healthy and getting guys to develop throughout the year is going to be pivotal but also very difficult as we have arguable the most difficult schedule in all of San Diego. Playing Cathedral Catholic week 1, Vista Week 2 and then San Clemente Week 3 followed by our League Play and Valley Center in the middle of that. Not a dull moment in our schedule so guys will have to learn quickly in preparation for the season.


Inexperience on Varsity for Quarterback but if Marshal performs to his potential he could be a scholarship caliber athlete.


Kicking game also inexperienced there as well. Joe Bowman is very promising but is just going to be a sophomore and he looks to be our place kicker, our punter will also be new to varsity as well.

Willauer-Contributing Writer-Fallbrook High School-Fallbrook, CA-7-31-18: After their last berth in the CIF football tournament berth in 2015 under former head coach Kyle Williams the Warriors of Fallbrook finished in the last 2 years with identical 1-9 records, this squad is hungry for football in 2018 under second year coach Darius Pickett. Last year the Warriors JV finished with a 4-6 record and is looking for room to improve.

"Our team is looking good and working hard for is excited about the season these kids have been working hard since we started spring football Jake McBroom at qb and Jalon Webb will be leaders for our squad for us and we expect a lot out of them." said Head Fallbrook Warrior Head Coach Darius Pickett

"On the offensive line we lost a lot from last year were seniors we have 1 returning lineman in Darius Watson who will be a leader for us we had some guys who came up from us from the JV squad who contributed to our ballclub our squad knows that we expect a lot from them." said Coach Pickett

"On the receiving side we have Luke Conley and Will Gross returning which will be huge for our squad they need to step up and do their responsibilities for us. " said Coach Pickett

"On defense we return on another individual who we're counting on in Joseph Portillo, Alex Person and Corbin Nash who was injured last year lets hope to see improvement from these key people on the defensive line along with Darius Watson who has helped us out last year." said Coach Pickett.

We spent 3 full days catching SoCal and NorCal players at three tournaments (Fab48, Bigfoot, Rebound Hoops) and are in the process of editing about 300 photos since we got back to our desktop last night.

Hawaii Warriors vs Colorado State 2018 Preview

1st annual Nor Cal Skills Clinic will be Sat August 11 at Las Positas College in Livermore 10:30am-3:30pm. A teaching/development event for boys grades 7-12. Cost is $65 per player. Discount rate is $50 each for 3 or more from same family/school/team. gerryfreitas@hotmail.com

2018 NOR CAL CLASH ANNOUNCEMENT

The ninth annual Nor Cal Clash will be held Sunday August 26th at Chabot College in Hayward at 3:00 pm. This one-game event will have elite players from Northern California in the class of 2019 playing against elite players in the class of 2020.

The purpose of the event is to help promote Nor Cal basketball and its’ elite prospects. A report on the event will be done by the Hoop Review scouting service in addition to websites norcalpreps.com, californiapreps.com, prephoops.com and other media outlets.

Coaching in the event will be Joey Rollings of Sheldon High in Sacramento, the 2018 state Open Division runner-up, and Tom Costello of Dublin High, Nor Cal Division I regional quarter finalist in 2018.

The list of players participating in the event will be announced on August 5.

Drake Jackson, 2019 (Corona Centennial)
This is without a doubt one of the most explosive players I have seen recently. Primary position is defensive end but can play inside 3 technique or 1. Can also play outside linebacker and can be a game changer if you know where he fits! Great supportive family. “Can take a butt chewing!”
