San Pasqual Golden Eagles defeats Orange Glen Patriots for the Battle of the Bear Award

Willauer Contributing Writer-Saturday, September 15, 2018-In a Escondido School District rival game between the Golden Eagles of San Pasqual and the Patriots of Orange Glen, the Golden Eagles improve their record on the season as 3-2 as they defeated the Patriots of Orange Glen 3-2 by a 37-14 score.

North County Football Wrap for 9-14-18

The Maverick of Lacosta Canyon on Aiden Lippert's 86 yard touchdown run Marshall Eucker's 9 yard pass to Trent Dunn, Finlay Lumsden 5 yard pass to Derek Miller, who also scored on a 14 yard touchdown run defeated the Oceanside Pirates by a 31-20 score.

Joe Smith's 3 yard touchdown run, 2 Joey Armentrout touchdown passes of 6 yards to Skai Darnell and 82 yards to Joe Smith paced the 2-3 Grizzlies of Mission Hills to a 21-13 win over Ramona.

Evan Galluzzi's 2 touchdown runs of 11 yards each touchdown run, 3 Max Bingham touchdown runs of 6,2, and 14 yards paced the top ranked Falcons of Torrey Pines (No 1 in San Diego County) defeated the El Camino Wildcats by a 36-14 score.

The coverage the last couple years has really gone downhill..........Especially this year it looks like. They dedicated one page of coverage of high school games. Only three total games had coverage........Local news coverage is why people buy local newspapers............Preseason coverage was very limited and that continued today. Newspapers are struggling in most of the country, but cutting back on local of any sort is not the way to go.

It is not often I get out of the Riverside/Moreno Valley area for a game, so I am glad to be at Rancho Cucamonga's Cougar Stadium. It is my first time here and is a beautiful stadium. The home stands are full and, at times, loud.

Not much to cheer about so far for the home team. Norco's offense has both powered and sliced it's way through the RC defense. RC has no answer defensively.

Same story on the other side of the ball. RC has moved the ball but only one, two or three plays at a time. Norco D has forced three turnovers, penalties stopped another drive each occurrence leading to TDs.

Missed extra point is the only thing gone wrong for Norco.

They lead 27-0 5:27 2nd.

It is not too late to compete with us! With six weeks of the regular season remaining, there is still time to win this contest. Going in to week 4 our leader has just two STARs. There is plenty of time to get hot and show us how it is done.

The Mission HIlls Grizzlies registered their first win after 2 losses on Quinton Hadnot 25 yard run Danny McMahon 36 yard pass to James Smith James Armentrout 1 yard gain as they defeated the Lancers of Carlsbad by a 24-21. Tyler Stacier and David Flores paces Vista in Key Win over Morse Tigers

Willauer-Contributing Writer-Dick Haines Stadium-Vista High School-Vista, CA-9-7-18: In a key game of 2 identical teams with 2-1 records coming into tonight's game the Vista Panthers have proved themself tonight as their record at 3-1 on the season but the touchdowns and defense were the main key of the game.

The Panthers scored touchdown runs by Ty Stacier of 8 yards and 11 yards, David Flores 2 touchdown runs of 7 and 11 yards Brian Kelly scored on a 36 yarder, qb Josh Davies 11 yard run as they defeated the Tigers of Morse High School the alma mater of current Baltimore Orioles centerfielder Adam Jones by a 42-20 score.

UCLA bound Shemar Martin known for his speed at qb and defensive plays scored 2 touchdown runs of 9 and 65 yards.

The San Jacinto Tigers(3-0) are #1 in the current calpreps.com ratings for the CIFss Division 7. They are #3 in the CIFss poll. They are on the road this week, against their toughest opponent so far this season, the Murrieta Mesa Rams(1-1) of Murrieta Valley. The Rams crushed Corona(2-1) last week 55-14 but will find the Tigers much tougher. I will project this to be a 28-21 Tiger victory.

#2 in Calpreps.com D-7 ratings are the Millikan Rams(2-1). The CIF poll has them as #8 in D-7. They are on a bye, studying up to play Moore League nemesis, Long Beach Poly(2-1), next week.

#3 in Calpreps.com and #2 in the CIF poll is Coach Raul Lara's Warren Bears(2-0) of Downey. They are traveling to face the Culver City Centaurs(2-0), the #6 team in D-7 according to Calpreps.com and the #4 team according to the CIF poll. In the Division 7 game of the week!

#4 in Calpreps.com and #9 in the CIF poll, are the Northview Vikings(3-0) of Covina. Northview pounded West Covina(1-2) last week by 51-6. It should be more of the same for Northview this week. maybe a touchdown closer, on the road against Don Lugo(1-2) of Chino.

#5 in Calpreps.com and #1 in the CIFss poll, are the Santa Barbara Dons(3-0), but it gets tougher this week as they face the St. Bonaventure(2-1) Seraphs. Current ratings favor the Dons over the Seraphs, but I am having trouble considering the Don's as favorites.

Ocean League favorite, Lawndale(1-1), suffered a 41-20 setback to powerful Division 2 Calabasas(1-1) last week and will probably take out there frustration on local rival Leuzinger(2-0) this Friday. Those records mean nothing. How different will this game look for Leuzinger? The last two weeks have been like playing JV squads. Now they are switching to play what will feel like a Junior College team. It looks like Leuzinger could find itself in a 3 way fight for that last guaranteed playoff spot in the Bay League this year, contending against Peninsula(1-2) and Redondo(0-3).

Culver City(2-0) hosts Warren(2-0) in the Division 7 game of the week. The CIFss poll for this week has Warren as the #2 team in D-7, while Culver is #4. Both teams possess talented QB's. Warren has only given up 14 points in their 1st two games, but neither prior opponent has the talent that Culver City possesses. The game is really a toss up with the potential for a high scoring affair but I will make the homer pick and pick my Centaurs to find a way to win.

The El Segundo Eagles(1-1) suffered a somewhat surprising 24-17 loss to Pioneer League favorite North Torrance(2-1) last week. They also had some struggles against Peninsula in week 1 before pulling out the win in the fourth quarter. It will not get any easier this week as they face Bay League favorite the Mira Costa Mustangs(1-1). Costa surprised St. Francis in week 1, but were surprised a bit themselves in a 23-20 loss to La Serna(3-0) of Whittier last week. The Eagles have been trouble for Costa in recent years but it is looking like the Mustangs might have the talent to overcome the Eagles this year.

The Hawthorne Cougars(2-0) have been rolling against easy competition so far and it should be more of the same this week, however, this might be the toughest of the first three games as they face LA City Division 3 school Bernstein(1-1) who managed to beat Inglewood(0-2) 43-26 last week. Hawthorne should still win it, but perhaps Bernstein can put up a challenge that the Cougars have not had so far this season.

So far, the Santa Monica Vikings(0-2) have shown an ability to play some defense while struggling to get their offense untracked. This week should provide welcome relief and victory with a win over lowly South Torrance(0-2). Only the Beverly Hills(1-1) game should provide an easier avenue to victory for the Vikings this season.

Speaking of the Beverly Hills Normans, after getting crushed by Malibu(3-0) last week, they should find themselves in a much more competitive game this week as they host LA City Division 3 Gardena(0-3). The Normans are not favored in this contest, but I would not put this one as outside the possibility of an upset. It could happen.

The Citrus Valley Blackhawks(1-1) of Redlands will be hosting La Quinta(0-2). Citrus Valley is unranked by the CIFss poll this week after their 36-26 loss to a good Colony High(3-0) squad last week. Calpreps.com still gives them some love, ranking them at #7 in D-7. La Quinta is also in D-7, but rates out as #21 of 24 in D-7. They are not likely to get a playoff slot from their Desert Empire League either. This should be an easy blowout win for the Blackhawks tonight.

The Troy Warriors(0-3), will be hosting Segerstrom(2-1) of Santa Ana. Although Troy is not likely to pick up a victory in this contest, it is the best matchup they will have had so far this year in terms of ratings. They could make it close. And if you can get close, anything can happen. This will be the first team this year that Troy is facing, that has lost a game. Troy is ranked 20th in D-7 by calpreps.com, one slot ahead of La Quinta. While Troy does not project to getting a playoff spot out of their Freeway League, they are only one upset, against the top three, away from squeeking into a projected playoff third place spot.

I think we all agree that in the IE, Centennial is the best team. Who then is second best? Norco plays at Vista Murrieta this week. Would you consider the winner of this game number two in the area? Certainly Upland would argue against and Cajon can make a convincing case. What about Rancho Verde or Heritage? Can anyone else lay a claim?

If memory serves correct, Citrus Hill has yet to lose a game to a Mountain Pass League opponent in the history of that league. Is this the year that changes? San Jacinto has quietly turned the corner. They have one convincing win over a Southwestern League team (Great Oak) and this week take on another (Murrieta Mesa) before facing a third (Temecula Valley). A lot can happen between now and October 19 when they meet Citrus Hill on the field, but for the first time it's seems there is a legitimate contender for the league title in the Mountain Pass other than Citrus Hill.

It's only two wins over Elsinore and West Valley, but Temecula Valley is undefeated under Coach Esposito. I am not ready to crown them as contenders in the Southwestern, but I am ready to say they will be competitive. It takes a while to turn a program completely around, but Coach Esposito deserves a ton of credit for changing the mindset of the Golden Bear faithful. He has reinvigorated that program and created excitement on campus. Don't be surprised when TV competes for the title in the next two seasons.

Will someone please step up and play Rancho Verde next season. According to sources, they had several openings in the schedule but heard "no" from those schools that would be competitive. Rancho is in the middle of a run of games versus opponents that have no shot at being competitive much less beating a very good Mustang team. Part of the problem is on them; they had an athletic director change in the middle of the school year coupled with the coaching change meant no one was minding the store until Coach Duffy took over. His late start and the chorus of nos left them scrambling to fill out their schedule.

Let's start this thread off with comments from last week. Then we will bold/italic the updates.

The Millikan Rams are rated as the #1 team in the CIFss Division 7 in the calpreps.com rating system. They are rated #2 in the CIFss latest poll. They are hosting a good Division 5 team called Aquinas(1-0), of San Bernardino. So far it looks like Aquinas possesses a good defense. I expect a closely fought contest with the Rams doing just enough to prevail.

Millikan(2-1) got the first score on a 25-yard touchdown pass from Qeanu Campbell-Caldwell to Jayden Davis in the first quarter. Aquinas(2-1) was not able to match until about 3 minutes before halftime. Millikan again took the lead on a 29yd field goal in the third quarter.

The Rams held onto that lead until Aquinas scored again with 1:53 left in the third quarter. Aquinas did not add the insurance TD until about a minute was left in the contest. Aquinas won 21-10, but it was closer than even that score indicates. While the Ram offense continues to have some struggles, the sturdy defense will keep them in contests.

The Rams will take next week off and use 2 weeks to prepare for Long Beach Poly(2-1) who were upset by Los Alamitos 20-6. Millikan fell to #8 in the CIFss D-7 poll this week, but calpreps.com still rates them strong at #2

#2 Warren(1-0) of Downey will breeze at home against lowly Huntington Park(0-2), an LA City D-1 team.

No big surprise as the Warren Bears(2-0) easily beat the Huntington Park Spartans
(0-3) 59-0. Warren held the Spartans to -14 yards in offensive plays for the game.

The Bears will face their first serious test this Friday as they travel to Culver City(2-0) to face the Centaurs. This is the Division 7 game of the week.

The CIFss D-7 poll has Warren at #2 and the Centaurs at #4. Both teams are capable of racking up big numbers against lower echelon opponents but both teams will be seriously challenged to get the win against a good competitor this week, and it is possible these two teams could have to rematch in the D-7 playoffs.

This game comes highly recommended for entertainment value. Both teams possess potent passing games.

#3 Santa Barbara (2-0) of the Channel League, should also breeze past Channel Islands(1-1) of Oxnard.

The Santa Barbara Dons (3-0) indeed breezed to a 54-3 victory over the Channel Islands Raiders(1-2), holding the Raiders to less than 50 yards passing and less than 50 rushing.

Santa Barbara is now ranked #1 in the CIFss D-7 poll, and #5 by calpreps.com. It gets significantly tougher next week as the Dons will take on their toughest opponent so far, this season, the St. Bonaventure Seraphs(2-1).

Somewhat surprisingly, the Dons are still favored in this contest. The Seraphs lost big, 38-6, to Highland (3-0) last week, a team without a big reputation, but whose reputation may continue to grow larger as the season progresses. Highland is now ranked #3 in the CIFss D-10 poll and calpreps.com has them listed as the #1 team in D-10.

#4 San Jacinto(2-0) of the Mountain Pass League, should get the win against Carter(0-2) a Division 5 school from the Citrus Belt League. San Jacinto projects to make the playoffs in D-7.

The San Jacinto Tigers (3-0) did pick up a 47-16 over Carter. Carter did put up some fight in the first half with the first quarter ending with just a 20-16 lead for San Jacinto. The Tigers were able to add one more score with just about a minute left before the half when the Tigers sophomore QB Kajiya Hollowayne hit his big TE Kaleb Hervey for a 19yd TD pass. The Tigers made great half time adjustments and Carter threatened no more.

#5 Pacifica(2-0) of Garden Grove, should suffer their first defeat at the hands of Division 3 Capistrano Valley(2-0) of the South Coast League.

The Pacifica Mariners (2-1) were dominated by the Capistrano Valley Cougars (3-0). The Cougars intercepted the Mariners 4 times and held them to 115 yards rushing for the whole game. It was 41-0 at the half.

The good news is that the Cougars are probably the toughest team Pacifica will see all season. The Cougars are now ranked as the #3 team in Division 3. Pacifica might win all of their remaining games on their schedule and they are certainly favored to do so at this point, with a few teams still left that might be able to give them a challenge.

Pacifica dropped from #1 to #8 in the CIFss poll this week and justifiably so. Calpreps.com also has them at #8 in D-7.

#6 Culver City (1-0) should prevail at home against Palos Verdes Peninsula (1-1) a Division 11 team in the Bay League.

See my post on Culver City & the Ocean League for more details as the Centaurs (2-0) did beat Peninsula(1-2) 61-27. REMEMBER! DIVISION 7 GAME OF THE WEEK NEXT FRIDAY AT CULVER CITY, VS WARREN (2-0).

#7 Citrus Valley (1-1) lost to Colony (3-0) a D-5 team from the Palomares League, 36-26, last night, but not unexpectedly.

Citrus Valley was #9 in the CIFss poll last week, but has dropped out of the CIF poll this week. However, calpreps.com believes them still worthy of a #7 ranking in D-7.

The problem for Citrus Valley may be getting a guaranteed playoff spot out of the tough Citrus Belt League. CV currently projects to finishing 4th in the 6 team league. CV was only down by 2 points after three quarters but ultimately they could not handle Colony RB Elijah Monroe who accounted for 278 yards rushing on 31 carries.

#8 Grand Terrace (1-1) of the Sunkist League, should get an easy victory against Hillcrest (1-1) of Riverside, a D-10 school from the River Valley League.

It was perhaps a tougher win for the Grand Terrace Titans (2-1) than expected in their 28-14 win over the Hillcrest Trojans (1-2)of Riverside. It was 21-14 at the half and remained that way after 3 quarters. The Titans' 2 interceptions of the Trojans along with holding them to just 56 yards rushing, helped the Titans to prevail. The Titans moved up to #6 from #7 in the CIFss poll while calpreps.com now has them at #8.

#9 Crescenta Valley (2-0) of the Pacific League, should be able to get a victory similar to their prior 2 this year against Montebello (1-1), an Almont League school playing in D-9 this year.

The CV Falcons (3-0) had their star QB Cole Doyle really shining in their 44-26 victory over lightly regarded Montebello. Doyle threw for 345 yards and 2 TD's while running for 152 yards and 4 TD's. While points scored and given up were more than with the prior two opponents, the point differential was similar to the two prior games.

#10 Northview (2-0) of the Valle Vista League, should get its toughest challenge so far this season against West Covina (1-1) of the Hacienda League who are playing in D-9 this year. But Northview should win.

The Northview Vikings (3-0) easily handled the challenge of facing the West Covina Bulldogs (1-2) with a 51-6 obediance training of the Bulldogs. The Vikings are favored to win their remaining contests and easily get into the D-7 playoffs with only the last game of the year, against San Dimas, looking like a significant challenge at this point. Northview went from #10 to #9 in the CIFss poll and calpreps.com now has them ranked as the #4 team in Division 7.

The Notre Dame Titans(3-0) of Riverside managed to beat their toughest yet opponent on the season, the Tustin Tillers (1-2) by a score of 45-41. The Titans do project as a team that will make the D-7 playoffs. They were not ranked in the CIFss prior week poll but are now #10. Calpreps.com rating also has them at #10.

This week our posters came to play as 8 of 9 of us finished .500 or above. We also saw our first ties of the season as Citrus Hill (-54) won by 54 and Chaparral (-10) accomplished the same feat.

Week 2 became a toss up between FmrOlineguy and takedwnmachine as they battled to the final game, but it was FmrOlineguy who prevailed. Winning 25 games; one more than takedwnmachine. FmrOlineguy earns the STAR. It is his first of the season.

Week 2 saw the favorites victorious in 28 of the 38 games, straight up. On the season the favorites are 76-32 straight up.

When the point spreads were included 6 more games flipped with the dogs beating or matching the spread. That means it was a big week for the favorites as they smash the dogs 22-14-2. Overall the favorites have retaken the lead from the dogs 56-50-2.

The Culver City Centaurs(2-0) finished with a similar victory margin to their opener against West Torrance but the battle was a little tougher against the Palos Verdes Peninsula Panthers(1-2). The Centaurs had to play their starters deep into the fourth quarter, in the 61-27 victory, to insure they could hold down any Panther rally. Yards passing and rushing slightly favored the Centaurs, more so in rushing yards and the Centaurs were even able to absorb a 2 interception performance from their young QB. Panthers QB Ethan Gretzinger did present challenges and made a few good throws, but was also intercepted, or was it his back-up as it did seem they lost the services of Gretzinger for a time in the first half and the ability of Panther offense was certainly limited without him. The Panther linebacking corps picked off the two passes and their OT/NG, #53 was a beast, but cannot be named because Peninsula has not taken the time to list a complete roster on Maxpreps.com, showing only 17 players and only 7 listed with numbers. Ultimately, the Centaurs just had too much speedy talent for the Panthers to handle. It is apparent that Serra transfer, Alan Smith, is in a class by himself in terms of speed. Don't let his small size fool you or he will be past you heading for the end zone. Despite his 2 interceptions, Centaur QB Zevi Echaus did deliver a couple of beautiful passes that only the Centaur speedsters could catch. He had 3 TD passes on the night. A pleasant surprise in the offensive backfield and on defense was senior RB/OLB Malachi McMahon. With Joshua Ford already taking on some RB duties, McMahon adds depth to the position and is a tough runner as well. McMahon had both an impressive TD run and a lucky bounce, while he was at linebacker on the Centaur D, allowed him to grab the fumble from the Panther QB and zip the remaining yards into the end zone.

The Ocean League favorites, the Lawndale Cardinals(1-1), traveled to take on highly regarded Division 2 team, the Calabasas Coyotes(1-1). The Cardinals came up short in a 41-20 loss. The Coyotes got out to a 25-0 lead in the second quarter, but the Cardinals did not pack it in, instead rallying to get within 25-20 after 3 quarters of play. But the Cardinals limited ability to throw the ball against such a high quality opponent, put too much pressure on the Cardinals running game and defense to keep up. A fourth quarter fumble by the Cardinals sealed off any hopes for a rally.

The El Segundo Eagles(1-1) are now definitely considered the projected third place finisher in the Ocean League as they struggled for the second week in a row in their 24-17 loss to North Torrance Saxons (2-1). North did not dominate the game as the Eagles lead 7-0 and were up 10-7 with just 3 minutes left in the third quarter. But the Saxons scored 2 TD's within the last 3 minutes of the third quarter. The Eagles rallied to get within 21-17 with 11 minutes still to go in the 4th, but a FG by North with 4 minutes to go extended the Saxon lead to the final score of 24-17. The Saxons Stephen Bradford ran for 172 yards and they also intercepted 3 passes from the well regarded senior QB for El Segundo. North looks to be the favorite to win the Pioneer League title and join West Torrance as Pioneer League representatives in the Division 9 playoffs. The Hawthorne Cougars(2-0) definitely look like they might have a team that can challenge the big 3 in the Ocean League. They are playing against lower level competition right now, beating South Torrance(0-2), 47-21, last week RB Joe Taylor the III looked real good and is getting good run and pass support from junior QB Kyle Williams. The O-line for the Cougars looks big and physical. It remains to be seen as to whether they will be that impressive against tougher competition, but they cannot be dismissed as this point and should be considered the most dangerous team in the Ocean League to pull off an upset against the big 3. The Santa Monica Vikings are considered to be the next most talented team, now after Hawthorne, but they are struggling offensively, losing 23-0 to a West Torrance squad that lost to Culver City 62-20 in week 1. They could only get 6 on the board against Compton in week 1. The only silver lining might be that the defense is apparently putting in good efforts.

The Beverly Hills Normans(1-1) victory high from their 32-0 win over Sotomayer(0-3) lasted just 1 week as they lost 62-7 to the Malibu Sharks(3-0). The win had broken the Normans 21 consecutive game losing streak. This season is still not without further hope. It could go better next week and for the next few weeks, but any hope for positive results in the Ocean League, even one win, is unlikely. The team only lists 5 seniors among it's current group of players on the varsity roster.
