Campaign starts to prevent ACL injuries

An injury to the anterior cruciate ligament in the knee can immediately send an athlete to the sideline, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that in 2006, there were more than 46,000 female athletes age 19 and younger who experienced a sprain and strain of the ACL, with nearly 30,000 requiring repair.

In fact, there are studies that young female athletes are up to eight times more likely than boys to tear their ACL. That's the motivation for the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the National Athletic Trainers' Assn. to launch a public service campaign to educate on prevention and treatment.

"While there is no single exercise that can prevent ACL injuries, the chances of such an injury happening can be lowered by performing training drills that emphasize power and agility and by improving muscular reactions with jumping and balance drills," according to Letha Griffin, a board-certified orthopedic surgeon specializing in sports medicine at the Peachtree Orthopaedic Clinic in Atlanta.

Lots more coverage of girls basketball coming!

CaliforniaPreps is in the process of increasing coverage for girls basketball. We want to cover a wide variety of teams and players, not just the elite ones.

We've assembled a good team of volunteers who are going to stress objectivity and we welcome more volunteers who want to help give girls basketball the coverage it deserves.

Some of the articles will be free, like the Adrianne Thomas one (click on link below). The volunteer staff is not being paid by CaliforniaPreps (which has a very limited budget!)- they are motivated by their desire to give more exposure to girls of all talent levels.

We will have POSITIVE coverage with no bashing! Travel teams will be mentioned from time to time, but not necessarily the top squads for them.

The website can't exist without subscriptions so I hope you'll consider supporting our efforts.

We plan to have lots of game reports, tournament reports, player reports, and even some rankings.

Adrianne Thomas article

Mater Dei (not Pyramid) will host championships

With the Pyramid in Long Beach unavailable, Santa Ana Mater Dei will be the site for the Southern Section girls' championship games on March 6 and 7.

That could set the stage for a rare situation, where Mater Dei's heavily favored girls' team gets to play a home game for the Division II-A championship.

"It was the best venue to take care of the girls' and CIF needs," Southern Section spokesman Thom Simmons said.

Stan Delus fired at Canyon for illegal transfers

2 players transferred from LA city schools this year and claimed to have addresses in the school's boundaries and a residence check found that to be false. Apparently Delus did assist with transportation of those specific students at least a few times over the summer. He did not try to deny the situation but admitted that he handled it poorly. Also on the Canyon team is "transfer" Brook Lemar. She originally attended Golden Valley. I assume she has done an actual residence change and is therefore still allowed to participate. It might be nice to actually see players that are real residents within the Canyon area, actually get to play basketball for Canyon.

Jasmine Dixon leaves Rutgers

Per the LB Press-Telegram

Former Poly High girls basketball star Jasmine Dixon, one of the nation's top recruits in 2008 who signed a letter of intent with Rutgers University, left the New Jersey school just five games into her freshman year.

As reported by The Newark (N.J.) Star-Ledger earlier this month, Dixon left the Scarlet Knight program and will transfer to another school. Tuesday it was reported that Dixon is considering transferring to UCLA.

"It's just not a good fit," Rutgers coach C. Vivian Stringer said in The Star-Ledger on Dec.8. "(Dixon will) be fine.

"We'll be fine."

Attempts to contact Dixon on Wednesday were unsuccessful.

Dixon played in Rutgers' two exhibition games and first five official games of the season, averaging 3.2 points, 1.6 rebounds and 8.8 minutes. She had a season-high seven points in consecutive games against Saint Joseph's (an 86-59 win) and Princeton (an 83-35 win).

Canyon has a bunch of new faces

Canyon of Canyon Country should be a contender if not the favorite in the Foothill League this season with the addition of three key transfers.

The Cowboys picked up juniors Vanessa Aguilar from Grant of Van Nuys, Alexa Davison from Cleveland of Reseda and sophomore Brieanna Perkins from Quartz Hill.

Canyon also has a promising freshman prospect in 6'1 forward Mariah Meuborn.
