Golden Valley hires new coach

Golden Valley has hired Todd Jackson as its varsity girls basketball head coach. Jackson took over as Canyon’s varsity girls basketball coach when Stan Delus resigned Jan. 15 after it was found out that two of his players had falsified residency records. Canyon was forced to forfeit 11 victories.

Jackson led the Cowboys to the brink of the postseason, going 7-3, but the Cowboys fell short of a playoff berth. He had hoped to remain as Canyon’s coach, but after its interviewing process, he interviewed at Golden Valley.

Jackson marks the fourth different varsity girls basketball coach in four seasons at Golden Valley.

Rule changes for next year

Here are some highlights of rule changes made after a meeting by the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) Basketball Rules Committee:

Replay equipment may be used in state high school basketball championships next year to determine the final outcome of games.

The NFHS voted to permit state high school associations to use a replay monitor to review field-goal attempts at the expiration of time in the fourth quarter or any overtime period, but only in games when the last-second attempt would affect the outcome of the game.

This was one of two major rules changes and five major editorial revisions approved by the committee.

The committee also decided to give state associations the opportunity to use technology, if available, to assist in making sure that the correct team is awarded the state championship. Replay or game officials will be able to determine if the attempt occurred before time expired (0:00 on clock), and whether the shot was a two-point or three-point attempt.

When available, technology should be used to assist game officials and administrators in making the correct call when the outcome of the game hangs in the balance and a team has no further opportunity to overcome a critical error. This change provides state associations that opportunity.

The other rule change approved by the committee could enhance the reviews of end-of-game situations. Beginning with the 2009-10 season, if a red light behind the backboard or an LED light on the backboard is present, it is permitted to signal the expiration of time in the quarter/extra period. If no red light/LED light is present, the audible timer's signal will continue to signal the expiration of time. In the past, use of the red light/LED light was not permitted even in those facilities that had one.

Two of the five editorial changes were approved in response to last year's major rule change in which all players moved up one lane space during a free-throw attempt, thereby leaving the two marked lane spaces closest to the end line vacant.

New language states that a player leaves a marked lane space when he or she contacts any part of the court outside the marked lane space (3 feet by 3 feet). A player occupying a marked lane space must have one foot positioned near the outer edge of the free-throw lane line with the other positioned anywhere within the designated 36-inch lane space.

These changes were necessitated by players attempting to leave their positions too early to gain a rebound advantage.

The remaining editorial changes are as follows:

Clarified that the imaginary rectangle designated the area to be used for time-outs.

Clarified when the 20-second interval begins to replace an injured player.

Clarified that any item, in the referee's judgment, that constitutes a safety concern is not permitted.

The committee also adopted five points of emphasis for the upcoming season: traveling, closely guarded, three-seconds, block/charge and free-throw administration.

According to the 2007-08 High School Athletics Participation Survey conducted by the NFHS, basketball is the most popular sport for girls with 449,450 participants in 17,564 schools. For boys, basketball is first in school sponsorship with 17,861 and second to football with 552,935 participants.

Chloe Wells is returning to Miller High School

Chloe Wells starred at Miller as a freshman and junior, then moved to North Carolina where she made maxpreps.com All-America honorable mention. However, Wells said she will return to the Rebels for the 2009-2010 season. Miller coach Mel Wilkins, contacted late this afternoon, didn't know of the development but said it "would be nice" if Wells returned.

1% CLUB Basketball Services is proud to announce it's new Training Resources for coaches, trainers, and the serious basketball athlete. For those having difficulty with inconsistent follow through, or coaches tired of re-teaching the same concepts passed along from generation to generation, then refer to the DVD trailer link above. The J-Glove shooting aid will revolutionize proper mechanics, with a patented finger splint design that prevents finger flexion at the base of your finger joints. As a result, the design eliminates premature side-to-side wrist action during follow through, which is a major biomechanical flaw for the majority of amateur shooters. The "Millennium Shooting DVD" not only includes the true science behind the J-Glove, but also specific shooting exercises for each of the key body joints involved in shooting a basketball. Like a good book, the J-Glove Shooting DVD will capture you with it's updated principles, allowing you to pick up new concepts every time you watch it over. It is time to "Release Your Shot Into The New Millennium"..

In relation to dribbling, the "Millennium Ball-Handling DVD" is the most comprehensive and specialized ball-handling DVD in the world. 1% CLUB Basketball has been showcasing its unique underground ball-handling curriculum around Northern California for years, developing some of the top amateur ball-handers in the world. The DVD, which was shot 5 years ago, includes long awaited amazing footage of Josh Akognon (NBA Prospect in upcoming draft) and Jackie Gamelos (USC) while training with 1% CLUB Basketball Services while still in high school. From 1-ball exercises to the amazing 4-ball exercises, the Millennium Ball-Handling DVD challenges players at all levels. To validate both DVD projects even more, all music and rap intro's were arranged by Rap Mogul and Northern California under ground legend, E-40.

City Section ready to cut Freshmen/Soph games

With budget cuts looming, the City Section is on the verge of cutting freshman-sophomore boys' basketball teams that play in the fall and freshman-sophomore girls' basketball teams that play in the spring. That would save an estimated 152 buses, according to Barbara Fiege, the City commissioner.

A freshman-sophomore team would play in the winter, similar to what the Southern Section has, forcing City teams to play three games in one day, resulting in later start times for varsity games.

Fiege still has not made a final decision.
