San Pascual defeats Calvin Crusaders 50-45

By David A. Willauer-Contributing Writer-San Pasqual High School-Escondido, CA 12-17-19-In a battle of Escondido High Schools the Golden Eagles of San Pasqual High School improve their record to 5-5 on the season as they ride a 3 game winning streak behind 15 points by Nathan Zafra, 12 by Nick Danilovic contributed with 12 points and Mason McCreary 11 defeated the Crusaders of Calvin Christian 50-45.

Former San Pasqual and Duke alum Eric Meek who led the Blue Devils to 3 finals and 2 NCAA Men's Basketball Championships under coaching legend Mike Kryszewski commented on tonight's game.

"One of the biggest things is to let our team to come together like we did tonight as we ride a 3 game winning streak." "Nick Danlovic who I called "The Veteran" is a senior and did well on his 3 point shooting who isn't selfish is what we need on our squad." "Nathan Zafra played great for us, is one of those hard players who makes an impact on every play." After the game I spoke to our squad and complimented Nate Zafra's effort on defense and have created good plays for us."

"Martin Gumwel the 6'9" freshman is a player I wasn't expecting him to have a soft touch he is going to be an asset to Calvin Christian he has a nice jump hook and very coordinated for a good player." said coach Meek.

In the first half we improved our shooting every game, when we started our season early, we had trouble with our personal fouls and shooting but I was proud of our squad, in the last 3 games our squad has been playing together and looked for open shots."

The Crusaders for Calvin Christian suffer their first loss of the season as they were led by Luke Bons with 16 and 14 by Brandon Nelson.

Legendary Coach Bob Ladouceur on the Upcoming State Open Game

An article in today's San Jose Mercury News quoted Bob Ladouceur on the last three years State Open Games, which De La Salle lost. He said; "Wow, I just kind of wondered where all these kids came from", referring to Mater Dei and St. John Bosco. So finally this legendary coach asks the question we all wondered about i.e. the sudden super teams that MD and SJB now have.

Like John Wooden, you have to listen to a legend like Bob Ladouceur.

State Open Game

We here in Northern California are hoping that DLS can stay close to SJB. We realize that privates have an advantage over the publics i.e. the ability to attract more athletes. Of course, schools like SJB and MD put DLS to shame with their blatant transferring in of great athletes.

Anyway, go DLS!!

Food for Thought Following CIF-SS Football Championships

Here's a note sent out from the CIF-SS assistant commissioner:

Virtually every game was within one score, except D2, D3, which was tied at 28 before CDM pulled away, and Highland won by 12. Everyone else was 9 points, Marina, 9 games were by 7 or less.

14 Champions
11 Public Schools
3 Private Schools

And of the three match-ups in the finals between private and public’s, the public’s won all three...

Corona del Mar over Grace Brethren
San Juna Hills over Loyola
South Torrance over St. Pius X-St. Matthias
