North County Boys and Girls Basketball CIF News and Results

Willauer-2-23-19-University of California at San Diego-Contributing Writer-In a girls basketball contest the Lady Lancers of Carlsbad High School defeated the Lady Foothillers of Grossmont High School by a 64-42 score in the championship round of the Division II CIF Girls Basketball Tournament. For the Lady Foothillers Daneca Perez and Sarah Henry each had 11 points, Anyussa Chargula contributed with 9. Carlsbad finished with a 20-12 record and will host Crossroads School from Santa Monica in a CIF Girls First Round State Tournament on Tuesday, February 26th

This is the Lady Lancers 4 CIF Section title in school history.

The Lady Mavericks of LaCosta Canyon High School behind the 19 point performance of Hanna Etheridge and 11 by Haley Dumiak defeated the Lady Knights of San Marcos High School. Ashley Bernales led the Lady Knights with 18 points.

Mission Hills reaches CIF Final 6th straight time falls to Cathedral Catholic

Willauer-In an Open Division Championship round of the CIF Open Division Final game the Lady Grizzles of Mission Hills reached the final round for the sixth time in a row after 4 CIF Division I titles were defeated vs. by the Lady Matadors of Mount Miguel at the Viejas Arena on the campus of San Diego State University in 2018 but this game was no exception as the Lady Dons of Cathedral Catholic won by a 50-33.

Catherine Beus on her performance vs. Cathedral Catholic: "We came out on the court slower than usual and everything went off, we weren't focused and they got up on us early in the game." "When we trailed by an 18-4 score and made the game close to put us within 8 at 18-10 basketball is a team sport as our team helps one another in sharing the ball when one of us isn't doing well the other one has to pick up the slack and that is what I did ."

"Everyone on the team takes turns to be the higher scorer and this is the first time I have done it this season" "Our shooting was a little off but we could have shot better as we let Cathedral come up on us early and we didn't bounce back like we usually do. I have to give Cathedral Catholic a lot of credit for playing hard but in my opinion it should have been a closer game then that." said Catherine Beus.

Catherine Beus for the Lady Grizzlies of Mission Hills led with 12 points Auren Isaacson with 10.

Chris Kroesch Head Girls Basketball Coach at Mission Hills: "Cathedral Catholic was more aggressive then us today as we played too much isolation ball which is not our style of ball and probably missed 6 layups on defense we weren't guarding well give credit to Cathedral Catholic they outplayed us in every category. " "They took a lead on themselves because they played hard both on offense and defense."

The Lady Dons were led by Ice Brady 16 points Mazee Harris contributed with 12 points
Sportsmanship Awards for Mission HIlls Dani Cephous and for Catholic Catholic Kaylee Goff.

The Lady Dons won their 3rd CIF SDS Section Title overall and will host El Camino Real on Tuesday, February 26.

Rancho Buena Vista attempts for 3rd CIF Section Title falls short to the Carlsbad Lancers

"For us going in the game today we didn't play well and Carlsbad played with more composure, the experience was been here before but we looked like the opposite but one of the big things is that we didn't take care of the basketball." "Losing Noah Fields was a big blow to our team because we lost on the rebounds if we didn't rebound the ball it hurt us on our offense." "One of the players who got the Sportsmanship Award is Aiden Ross who has been the heart and soul for our team has been out for the past 2 weeks with mono." We had a great season and a lot of success and to hang our hat on and to be proud about it." "Were not done we're going to keep grinding and be ready for next year."

Former Villanova alum John Olive leads Torrey Pines to first CIF Open Title in win over Foothills Christian

Willauer-Contributing Writer-RIMAC Arena-University of California at San Diego-2-23-19-For the first time since 2012 the Falcon of Torrey Pines known for their Boston Celtics style of play had won their first CIF Open Division Boys Basketball Title since 2012 and under former Villanova alum and current coach John Olive defeated the Knights of Foothills Christian by a 51-47 score.

John Olive Men's Basketball Coach at Torrey Pines High School: "We had worked so hard to put a lot of time into this season to see the kids play up to their level and have achieved their goal in win something like this." "Brad Leaf does a good job at Foothills Christian as he's guided them to various CIF titles along with being ranked in the state of California." "That is an incredible program that knows how to play." "The Pope twins have stepped up all season and have contributed for our squad."

Noah Viera led the Falcons with 16 points, 14 by Michael Pope and 11 by twin brother and University of Caifornia San Diego bound Bryce Pope

Foothills Christian was led by Derriek Carter Hollinger with 19 points and 13 by Yassine Gharran

With the win the Falcons improve to 25-6 and will be on the road on Tuesday, February 26 where they will be taking on the Trailblazers of Sierra Canyon while the Knights of Foothills Christian improves their record to 23-6 and will host El Camino Real on the same date.

The national rankings to end the football season are now out. Monarchs officially finished #1 in the country by USA Today and #2 in by MaxPreps.

Willauer-Contributing Writer-Torrey Pines High School-San Diego, CA-12-27-18: In one of the most closest games that went down to the wire in a quarter final game of the National Division of the Torrey Pines Holiday Basketball Classic that was held at Torrey Pines High School in San Diego, it was again Mission Bay after they defeated Torrey Pines in a CIF quarter final game on the Falcons home court by a 52-20 score this time went further in the 4th quarter after Bryce Pope connected on 2 foul shots to give Torrey Pines a 63-62. The ball was imbounded as Duke University bound only scored 6 points through the game despite a wrist injury scored the game winning basketball at the buzzer to give Mission Bay a 64-63 lead and advanced in the semi final round.

Boogie Ellis: "I didn't have any trouble shooting as I was double teamed a lot but I found my teammates and made them felt good by letting them make the open shots." "When we played Torrey Pines the last time in the quarter final round I don't think about that my job is to focus on my teammates and am here to play basketball." "We stepped up huge today everyone knows in the count which is a big deal for me. It is going to be a good game and will be ready to play."
