The spike in Covid cases is resulting in lots of game cancellations and procedural changes

Excerps from The Daily News:

Some boys basketball teams announced Monday that league games had been postponed or that they pulled out of upcoming tournaments due to COVID-19 within their program.

Chaminade, Long Beach Poly, Bishop Montgomery, and Rolling Hills Prep are among the teams that opted to skip playing games this week for COVID-related reasons.

Harvard-Westlake is starting its spring semester online this week for safety reasons, and the school planned to test all students, staff, faculty and coaches Monday. Athletic director Terry Barnum said the school will collect results through Wednesday and hope to return to in-person learning Thursday.

Sierra Canyon and Notre Dame announced they will limit access to their basketball games. Students and non-family members will not be allowed the games.

Long Beach Poly’s boys basketball team canceled its next four games — all in the Moore League — due to COVID protocols within the program, according to athletic department officials. The Jackrabbits were directed to suspend all basketball-related activities until further notice on Dec. 30. This came after Poly played two games in The Classic at Damien.

Athletic directors from across the Moore League, which includes Poly, Cabrillo, Jordan, Millikan, Wilson, Lakewood and Compton, are working on an updated, flexible plan for the remainder of the winter sports season.

Last week, a large number of boys basketball teams pulled out of holiday tournaments due to COVID-19 issues. The most prominent tournament of the week, The Classic at Damien, had 88 teams sign up to play in its four-day event, but tournament director Frank Burlison said just 45 teams were able to compete on Thursday’s final day.

The Pioneer League was scheduled to begin league play Wednesday, but has moved those games to Monday, Jan. 10, but it has not decided yet about the other league games this week.

The Bay League postponed all games in all sports through Thursday to allow schools to complete the required testing protocols. All of the postponed games will be rescheduled.
