A preview of Dayton Aupiu's (Oxnard Pacifica) visit to Cal this weekend (June 23)

Another of Cal strongest leads at this point looks to be three-star safety Dayton Aupiu, from down the coast in Oxnard.

He took official visits to Arizona and Utah already, wraps up with Cal this weekend and will make a commitment decision in early July.

"Just the amount of DBs they send to the NFL. They're known for developing multiple DBs," he said of what appealed most to him.

Aupiu is making the visit with his mother and cousin and shared what he is most interested in seeing this weekend ...

"Just seeing how the program is and the weight room and how the football team gets together as a family and just seeing if I'm comfortable being there," he said.

Can Oregon win out over USC for Ryan Pellum? Here's the latest.

Here's what the Rivals' Oregon analysts think about the Long Beach Millikan standout ATH:

"There is some talk that Ryan Pellum is not going to make it to Eugene for an official visit this weekend. That would point to the reality that he is more likely than not to pick USC. That doesn’t mean he is a silent commit – he is not. In fact, folks close to USC have told me that Pellum is still expected to make it to Eugene.

Even if he does, though, the same sources feel very confident that USC is the likely destination. Part of that is the limited slots for wide receivers at USC in this class and the need for players to take their spot now or potentially miss out. That does not mean Oregon cannot hit this visit out of the park and give Pellum more to consider.

As of right now, if I were to make a prediction, it would be for USC."

Two Sacramento area football prospects shined at the recent Notre Dame evaluation camp

Notre Dame football hosted the second of its three June evaluation camps on Tuesday. Two Sacramento area prospects made the top 15 list of the 100 or so attendees.

Ezekiel Castex (Christian Brothers):
"The rising junior from Sacramento showed why he’s been on the receiving end of offers from a handful of Pac-12 schools. Castex might have been the best cornerback at the camp, and that showed during one-on-ones.

He broke up passes and became a nuisance for whomever he was covering. If Castex tested well, he might be worth considering for a Notre Dame offer."

Isaiah Ene (Granite Bay):
"Don't let Ene's size fool you, he can play. The 5-foot-8, 176-pound recruit is listed as an athlete, a designation given to multi-positional prospects, but camped as a running back under running backs coach Deland McCullough.

Ene made everything look effortless in the one-on-one portion against linebackers. He got in and out of breaks seamlessly and caught every ball that came his way. He has a quick first step and flashed good technique that project him as a useful offensive weapon.

Heading into his sophomore season at Sacramento (Calif.) Granite Bay, Ene reports four offers from Arizona, Colorado, Nevada and Washington.

JSerra's DB Tre' Harrison impressed at Notre Dame's evaluation camp

Here's his evaluation:

"Harrison lived up to his reputation as one of only two recruits to attend the camp with a Notre Dame offer already extended to him. Harrison handled pursuit angles with ease in one of safeties coach Chris O’Leary’s drills. His coverage skills were strong enough that he could be considered a cornerback. Harrison’s not quite big enough to be considered one of the top defensive backs in the country, so his continued physical development will be important.

Is Etiwanda's QB Dermaricus Davis a heavy Oregon State lean?

Our Rivals' Oregon State staff has the scoop:

"Davis was on campus this past weekend for Oregon State and some sources have told us they believe this is a recruitment for the Beavers that is 'their's to lose'. That feeling remains coming out of this weekend and now he'll take a visit to Washington this weekend and a decision is likely to come following that official visit."

Notre Dame feels real confident after Kyngstonn Viliamu-Asa's visit

Here's what Notre Dame Rivals staff thinks after St. John Bosco's Kyngstonn Viliamu-Asa's visit over the weekend:

"Confidence continues to rise that the Irish will eventually land four-star LB Kyngstonn Viliamu-Asa, Rivals' No. 35 overall prospect in the 2024 class. The Irish have been leaning into what makes their program/university different, and that message has really resonated with Viliamu-Asa and his family. Ohio State is still expected to host Viliamu-Asa this upcoming weekend, and the Buckeyes are a legitimate threat, but I believe Notre Dame is sitting No. 1 heading into his trip to Columbus.

Of interest to USC fans: Ohio State staff talks about visits from Zabien Brown and Peyton Woodyard

Both prospects visited Ohio State and here's what the Rivals staff said:

"The recruitment of Zabien Brown has been interesting but the recent surge from USC is real and I think, even after his official to Ohio State this weekend, that the Trojans are the team to beat.

Truth be told, I think that's also the case for Georgia commit Peyton Woodyard which is a bit of a surprise but eventually a flip to USC—not Ohio State—is something that I could see happening."

Arizona gets new commitment from Mission Viejo on Saturday (June 17)

Rivals staff writer Matt Moreno:

"Arizona has added a kicker to its commitment list for the 2024 class. Mission Viejo, California standout Michael Salgado-Medina is headed to UA continuing a strong pipeline with the top Southern California high school program.

Salgado-Medina is widely considered to be one of the top kickers in the class, and Chris Sailer currently has him ranked 13th overall and a five-star recruit in his rankings system.

That is equivalent to being a "FBS Power 5 Freshman Year Starter, Scholarship Pick" in his system of rankings. He's a big body at 6-foot-3 and also has the ability to punt as well."

What does Texas think after Laguna Beach's TE Ryner Swanson's visit to Oregon?

Here's what a Rivals Texas staffer had to say:

"One weekend after telling OB that Texas had moved into the pole position, Swanson was at Oregon and the Ducks made a strong impression of their own. Interestingly, Swanson was not joined on the visit by his parents, with his brother and best friend accompanying him to Eugene. His BYU visit is ongoing and that one still feels like the much bigger threat to Texas’s chances."

Nate Frazier (Mater Dei) takes unofficial visit to Georgia and it could be pivotal

Here's what a Rivals Georgia staff writer had to say:

"Frazier is expected to take an official visit to Georgia this fall. That didn't stop him from crossing the country for an unofficial visit to Athens over the weekend. With the help of the commits in town, Georgia made a move in Frazier's recruitment. The hype surrounding the flip of Bowens didn't hurt either, as Bowens is already recruiting Frazier to Athens. Other visits are on tap for this summer, but the Bulldogs are now one of the teams to beat."

Corona Centennial has a transer QB to watch!

Per Eric Sondheimer, LA Times:

"Let all the internet gurus gush over other quarterbacks. Corona Centennial has the best in junior Husan Longstreet, a transfer from Inglewood. His arm strength, particularly for the deep pass, is off the charts.

“He’s got incredible arm talent,” Centennial coach Matt Logan said.

Centennial’s success always has centered on its running game, but Longstreet’s arm, combined with his mobility, will make the Huskies a definite threat to the likely No. 1 team, Santa Ana Mater Dei."

New free-throw rule

The National Federation of State High School Assn.’s Basketball Rules Committee approved the elimination of one-and-one free-throw situations for boys and girls next season, awarding two free throws for any foul in a bonus situation.

Teams will reach the bonus after the fifth foul is called in each quarter instead of the previously required seven fouls each half. Team fouls will reset each quarter. Previously two free throws, known as the double bonus, were awarded on the 10th foul of a half.
