Culver City & the Ocean League post week 6

The Culver City Centaurs (5-1, 1-0) easily handled Ocean League opponent, the Santa Monica Vikings (2-4, 0-1) by a score of 54-14. One of the questions every year is will the status quo remain the same in the league, and at least for the last few years, Culver has been dominant over Samo. Ever since coach Travis Clarke took his act over to Lawndale High (4-2, 1-0).

Centaur Sophomore QB Zevi Echaus returned to the playing field after missing a couple of games due to injury and shook the rust off for four TD passes and 242 yards. RB Joshua Ford contributed 118 yards rushing on just 8 carries. Two of them going for TD's. Jahmal Glaspie had 2 of the TD receptions. Tanner Duve had a 93 yard TD reception on a quick slant and the electric Kevin McGuire accounted for the other after receiving a screen pass at midfield.

The Centaurs amassed a combined 524 yards passing and rushing. Samo had 196 passing but was minus 58 in the run game due to several backfield stops and several sacks. The Centaurs cannot take much glee in this first league game win as it may turn out that the Vikings are the fifth place team in league. Plus, the Centaurs travel to take on the Ocean League favorite Lawndale Cardinals next week.

The Lawndale Cardinals had an even easier game of it in beating recent league doormat, the Beverly Hills Normans (2-4, 0-1). Lawndale was up 35-0 after one quarter and 42-0 at the half. They cruised to a 61-0 victory. Not surprising against the lowly Normans. I still think Beverly Hills is slightly better than what they were a year ago. Lawndale's game against the Centaurs will likely determine who will be the Ocean League champions. The game is rated almost a toss-up. Beverly Hills should have it a little easier against El Segundo, the projected loss is supposed to be only 52-3.

The El Segundo Eagles (3-3, 0-1) should be pretty steamed after falling to the Hawthorne Cougars (4-2, 1-0) by a score of 41-28. The Eagles now find themselves in the unenviable position of having to beat either the Centaurs or Cardinals to get any shot at a top three position in league and a guaranteed playoff selection.

There may be a few wild card entry options from Division 7 for the Eagles and of course they would probably be placed in the opposite side of the bracket from the Centaurs. The Cougars scored 1st but El Segundo had the next 2 scores to be up 14-7 in the second quarter. But the Cougars got the next two TD's, one with less than minute left before the half on 60 yard pass play. The Cougars were successful on a 2 point conversion to go up 21-14 at the half.

The Eagles responded with a 16 yard TD run in the third quarter to tie the score. Hawthorne responded with a score followed by another Eagle score getting it all knotted at 28-28 with 3 minutes left in the third. The Cougars were able to hold off the Eagles in the fourth quarter along with two more TD's, one of them with less than a minute left in the contest.

The Cougars will travel to face the Santa Monica Vikings this week and while the calpreps.com rating system is picking the Vikings to win by 1 point, I think the Cougars should be favored, especially after their performance against the Eagles. The Cougars might be one of those teams that will continue to improve as the season progresses.

Jalen Bainer's key interception Aaron Norita's 3 yard run paces San Marcos in big win

By David A. Willauer-Contributing Writer-Excalibur Field-San Marcos High School-San Marcos, CA-Friday, September 28, 2018: In a very low scoring contest that was full of turnovers, penalties but good defensive battles by both ranked schools in North County, 2nd ranked and previously undefeated LaCosta Canyon at 5-1 had 7 penalties for 35 to San Marcos at 5-1 16 penalties for 125 the Knights were trailing 6-3 at the half and tied the game at 6-6 on Caleb Mancini's 49 yards at 8:44 in the third quarter but the key turnaround after Maverick qb Marshall Eucker who had 9 completions out of 21 attempts for 107 yards threw a key interception to Knights Jalen Bainer who ran 25 yards for an interception as he was tackled at the 3 yard line.

Jalen Bainer defensive back on the key interception for San Marcos: "Our defense played well throughout the game as this was a key contest for our school, today I went for the ball which I have studied on film and as we went out on the field today and executed well on defense."

" Lacosta Canyon have outstanding athletes." " On the key touchdown by Aaron Norvita that turned our momentum around and that is how we won the game." said Jalen Bainer.

On the first play tailback Aaron Norvita (6 carries for 21 yards) scored the only touchdown of the game as he ran 3 yards for the score with the PAT no good. With 14 seconds left in the game qb Dane Olsen 13 completions out of 24 attempts 132 was tackled in the end zone as the Mavericks recorded a safety to make the final score San Marcos 12 Lacosta Canyon 8

The San Marcos Knights will be at El Camino on Friday, October 5 while the Mavericks of LaCosta will host the Jaguars of Valley Center kickoff for both games are 7:00 pm

Division 7 update at the halfway point of the season.

The Northview Vikings (5-0), of Covina, in the Valle Vista League, are the new #1 rated team in Division 7. They beat Los Altos (2-3) 31-7 last Saturday. They also have an impressive 28-10 win against San Marino (4-1) earlier this season. The Vikings will clean up against the easy teams in the Valle Vista League the next couple of weeks before the competition gets more serious against Covina (3-1) and they finish off league play against their toughest league opponent San Dimas (3-1).

They should go undefeated on the regular season. The Vikings are led by a talented junior QB James Jiminez who 51 of 82 for 1191 yards and 18 TD's with just 2 interceptions. Jiminez also leads the team in rushing with 334 yards and 4 TD's.
They were on a bye this last week.
Northview eases into the start of Valle Vista League play this week with an easy one against Wilson (2-3) of Hacienda Heights.

The San Jacinto Tigers (5-0) of the Mountain Pass League dropped to #2 in the calpreps.com ratings after their 41-28 victory over Temecula Valley (3-1). The ratings must favor strength of schedule. Perhaps the prior week's 12-7 victory over Murrieta Mesa (2-2) played into the ratings. The Tigers should have it a little easier this week in their league opener at home against Beaumont (4-1). Only the 10/19 game against Citrus Hill (4-0), the league favorite, should present a significant obstacle. A second place finish locking in a playoff spot seems most likely.
The Tigers were on a bye last week. Beaumont is rated #3 in Div. 11, but, it is D-11. Beaumont projects to third place in League which would get them to the playoffs, but both league opponents Tahquitz (5-0), in D-12, and Hemet (3-2) in D-11 are closely rated to Beaumont so the battle for third place in the Mountain Pass should be an exciting & meaningful one for the rest of the regular season.

Culver City (4-1)
holds the #3 rating in Division 7 despite it's 36-37 loss to Palos Verdes (1-3). PV is rated #5 in Division 5 despite its current record. The Centaurs will host the Dorsey Dons (0-4) of LA City section Division 1. A few years ago, few would have picked the Centaurs as favorites over the Dons but the tables have seemed to change in the last couple of years and the Centaurs enter this contest as a substantial favorite. Don't let that 0-4 record by the Dons fool you though, they still possess some talent and have been playing tough competition in losses to Long Beach Poly, Alemany and San Diego Section Lincoln(5-0).
Culver City 42, Dorsey 0. See my post on Culver City & the Ocean League for details.

The Millikan Rams (3-2, 1-1) were rated #4 by calpreps.com after their annual drubbing at the hands of Long Beach Poly, this time, better than some prior years, was a 46-15 loss. They still project to be the second place finisher in the Moore League which will be good enough for playoff qualification. But the key league game stretch starts now against teams that they should beat starting with Lakewood (1-4, 1-1), then Compton (5-0, 1-0) and later Long Beach Wilson (3-3, 1-1). They would have to stumble against two of these three to put playoffs in jeopardy and that is highly unlikely. Compton is 4-0 due more to an easy schedule than their own talent, but will probably extend it to 5-0 this week and have an outside chance at securing a playoff spot in Division 10.
Millikan 28, Lakewood 24. Millikan dropped to #5 in the Calpreps.com ratings after the game against Lakewood (1-4), as the close margin is of concern with the most key opponent left in the Moore League, Compton, this week and Millikan is the visitor. A Ram win almost assures them of a guaranteed playoff spot, but a loss puts a lot of hopes, in jeopardy.

The Crescenta Valley Falcons (5-0, 2-0)
are rated #5, now #4 and got off to a successful league play start with their impressive 31-7 victory over Muir (3-1) of Pasadena. Muir might be their toughest league opponent although Burbank and Arcadia could present challenges as well, but the Falcons have already notched a victory in one of the more important league contests. The Falcons senior QB Cole Doyle was once again a one man wrecking crew on offense going 12 of 17 for 195 yards, 1 TD & 1 interception, but more impressively, 23 rushes for 154 yards and 2 TD's. Meanwhile the Falcon defense intercepted 3 Muir passes and held Muir scoreless until the 4th quarter. The Falcons should have an even easier game this Friday against Pasadena (3-1), a paper tiger, because they are 3-1 due to scheduling.
CV 47, Pasadena 28. The win almost locks the Falcons into a playoff spot. The Falcons face Burroughs(1-4, 1-1) of Burbank. A traditionally tough opponent who has seemed to fall on hard times this year.

The Citrus Valley Blackhawks (4-1) are ranked #6 & eeked out a tight 24-20 victory over Silverado (1-4) last week. A not particularly impressive victory over an opponent that they should probably win by more. This does not bode well for the Blackhawks in the tough Citrus Belt League. This week's contest at the Grand Terrace Titans could be a slighty tougher challenge than the game against Silverado, but a good challenge never the less. They will need to experience this competition as they will likely get to the last game of the season wondering if they can get the needed victory against Yucaipa (3-2), to get into the playoffs. Should the Blackhawks lose to Yucaipa, I think they will still be one of the first choices for a wild card playoff entry should one be available in D-7.
CV 28, Grand Terrace 21. The Blackhawks will open Citrus Belt League play on the road against Redlands (1-4) this week.

Warren (3-2) of Downey moves into the #7 spot after an exciting 47-46 victory over LaSerna (5-1) of Whittier. Warren should get an easy win over Lynwood (0-3-1) to start their San Gabriel Valley League play. While they will struggle to beat Paramount (1-4) or Downey (2-3), they should be able to secure wins against Gahr & Dominguez which should lock up a third place finish in League and a Division 7 playoff spot.

#7 is the Valencia Tigers (4-1) of Placentia. They won handily, 35-14, against a weak Santa Fe (0-5) team. They start Empire League play next week and should have it fairly easy the rest of the way starting with Crean Lutheran (4-1) in two weeks. Pacifica (2-3) of Garden Grove, #13 in Division 7, is the next toughest in the Empire League but should not present much trouble. Both of these Empire League teams should have their football season extended into the playoffs in D-7.
Both D-7 Empire League teams were on a bye this week. Valencia dropped to #9 despite being on a bye. This weeks game is a Thursday night game which should be easily winnable for the Tigers despite matching records with their opponent. Pacifica projects to a second place finish in the 6 team Empire League, a bit tenuously. They face Cypress (2-3) this week in a key match-up.

#8 was the Sunny Hills Lancers (4-1) of Fullerton. They had a dominating 41-0 win over Kennedy (2-3) of La Palma last week. They have a very winnable game this week against Trabuco Hills (1-4), then start into Freeway League play that should see them finish in second behind La Habra (1-4) and guarantee them a playoff entry in D-7.
Sunny Hills 61, Trabuco Hills 38. The Lancers are now rated the #7 team in D-7. It will be a super easy game against Buena Park (2-3) this week.

#9 are the Notre Dame Titans (4-1) of Riverside. They lost 31-17 to a good Aquinas (4-1) squad last week. They are on a bye this week, awaiting Paloma Valley (2-2) on 9/28. The Titans play in the 4 team Sunbelt league but, fortunately for them, they look like the big dogs in their league and should also be a lock to make the playoffs. They dropped to #10 in the calpreps.com ratings despite being on a bye.

#10 are the Santa Barbara Dons (3-2). They lost to St. Bonaventure (4-1), 28-13, then lost to quickly rising Pacifica (4-0) of Oxnard. The Dons have a bye this week before starting Channel League play that should see them finish 2nd or third and earn a guaranteed playoff berth in D-7. The Dons dropped to #11 while they were on a bye. The Dons should get an easy win this week against San Marcos (1-4) in their Channel League opener.

Predicted Finish: Big VIII, Baseline, Southwestern

Big VIII
1. Centennial
2. Norco
3. Santiago
4. Roosevelt
5. King
6. Corona

Predicting Centennial to win and Norco to finish second may be the biggest no brainer in this thread. The real race here is between Santiago and Roosevelt for third. I give the nod to Santiago for no other reason than I have ties there. I miss the days when finishing third or fourth meant you were in the playoffs or out. That would make the Santiago/Roosevelt match-up on October 12 a high stakes game. Alas, both teams will make the playoffs either way. King and Corona will battle for the bottom. Will either coach be back next year?

Baseline
1. Upland
2. Etiwanda
3. Rancho Cucamonga
4. Los Osos
5. Damien
6. Chino Hills

The Baseline League is probably the toughest in the IE top to bottom. I am confident Upland will win the league. I am not confident of anything else. It is my feeling that any team from 2-6 can beat any other team from 2-6 on any given night. I would be surprised if a team other than Upland finishes with at least 4 wins. Look for there to be some sort of standings tie between 2 or more league rivals. But I have to rank them 2-6, and so I have.

Southwestern
1. Vista Murrieta
2. Murrieta Valley
3. Chaparral
4. Temecula Valley
5. Murrieta Mesa
6. Great Oak

Vista Murrieta has played one of the toughest schedule of any team in the IE. Their 3-2 record is actually better than it looks. I can not see Murrieta Valley beating them, though the Nighthawks too have played a tough schedule, But it is possible. I like VM's chances, but not as much as Centennial or Upland. 3-6 could be any combination of teams. Chaparral is undefeated and has a tough win against Yucaipa, but the other four games were cupcakes and they did not exactly route them. I am high on Temecula Valley, but I am not sure if it's because of what they've done on the field or how I feel about them. Murrieta Mesa beat the weak teams on their schedule and lost to the good ones. Look for that to continue into league play. Great Oak? Well they have only scored 33 points in five games and 20 of those were against King. If they're better than I think, we will know right away as they open league play with Temecula followed my Mesa.

Division 7 update for games week of 9/21

The Northview Vikings(5-0), of Covina, in the Valle Vista League, are the new #1 rated team in Division 7. They beat Los Altos(2-3), 31-7 last Saturday. They also have an impressive 28-10 win against San Marino(4-1) earlier this season. The Vikings will clean up against the easy teams in the Valle Vista League the next couple of weeks before the competition gets more serious against Covina(3-1) and they finish off league play against their toughest league opponent San Dimas(3-1). They should go undefeated on the regular season. The Vikings are led by a talented junior QB James Jiminez who 51 of 82 for 1191 yards and 18 TD's with just 2 interceptions. Jiminez also leads the team in rushing with 334 yards and 4 TD's.

The San Jacinto Tigers(5-0) of the Mountain Pass League dropped to #2 in the calpreps.com ratings after their 41-28 victory over Temecula Valley(3-1). The ratings must favor strength of schedule. Perhaps the prior weeks 12-7 victory over Murrieta Mesa(2-2) played into the ratings. The Tigers should have it a little easier this week in their league opener at home against Beaumont(4-1). Only the 10/19 game against Citrus Hill(4-0), the league favorite, should present a significant obstacle. A second place finish locking in a playoff spot seems most likely.

Culver City(3-1) holds the #3 rating in Division 7, despite it's 36-37 loss to Palos Verdes(1-3). PV is rated #5 in Division 5, despite it's current record. The Centaurs will host the Dorsey Dons(0-4) of LA City section Division 1. A few years ago, few would have picked the Centaurs as favorites over the Dons, but the tables have seemed to change in the last couple of years and the Centaurs enter this contest as a substantial favorite. Don't let that 0-4 record by the Dons fool you though, they still possess some talent and have been playing tough competition in losses to Long Beach Poly, Alemany and San Diego Section Lincoln(5-0).

Millikan(2-2) is rated #4 by calpreps.com after their annual drubbing at the hands of Long Beach Poly, this time, better than some prior years, was a 46-15 loss. They still project to be the second place finisher in the Moore League which will be good enough for playoff qualification, but the key league game stretch starts now against teams that they should beat starting with Lakewood(1-3), then Compton(4-0) and later Long Beach Wilson(3-2). They would have to stumble against two of these three to put playoffs in jeopardy and that is highly unlikely. Compton is 4-0 more to easy schedule than their own talent, but will probably extend it to 5-0 this week and have an outside chance at securing a playoff spot in Division 10.
More to follow, if I can get to it.

Culver City & the Ocean League, post week 5, pre-week 6

The Culver City Centaurs(4-1) did everything they should do in a dominating 42-0 win over the Dorsey Dons(0-5). The Centaurs were up 21-0 at the half but continued to make the plays necessary to stay dominant in the contest. Centaur junior QB, Nick Lucero, was 16 of 28 for 295 yards and 4 TD's with one interception in his second start of the season. The Centaurs also got help from their ground game with 161 total yards, 86 of those on 8 carries by Malachi McMahon with 1 TD. Junior receiver Chris Miller had a breakout game with 152 receiving yards on just 5 catches, 2 of them going for TD's. The defense pitched it's first shutout of the season, led by middle linebacker Cortez Wright's 13 solo tackles, two of them for losses. The Centaur D also created three turnovers, 2 recovered fumbles and one interception.
Ocean League play starts in week 6 and the Centaurs will host the Santa Monica Vikings(2-3). The Vikings are coming off their own dominating victory, a 55-6 win over Godinez(1-4) of Santa Ana. The Vikings relied heavily on their passing game and junior QB Anthony Arnou delivered, going 16 of 19 for 364 yards and 5 TD's. The Vikings leaned on two senior receivers, the talented Melvin Hicks and also Kobe White, each with 152 yards receiving.Zaire Martin-Thomas leads the ground game with 295 yards rushing over 5 games. Hicks in particular, and also White, are the dominant receivers. Ian Gomez, Eddie Saldana, Melvin Hicks and Amir Tryon get the bulk of the tackles for the Viking defense. Gomez leads the team in total tackles and tackles for a loss. The Centaurs are heavily favored in this contest. The Vikings 2 wins are against lower echelon opponents.

The Ocean League favorites, the Lawndale Cardinals(3-2), suffered a 27-14 setback last week at the hands of Narbonne(3-3), probably the best team in the LA City Section. Lawndale has been facing very tough teams in three of their non-league contests. It should get somewhat easier for them in league play, starting with the easiest game of the year for the Cardinals against the Beverly Hills(2-3) Normans. Lawndale is rated as the 45th best team in the entire state of California.

The other game in the Ocean League will have the Hawthorne Cougars(3-2) hosting the El Segundo Eagles(3-2) in a key match up to establish a front runner in the battle for the last guaranteed playoff position, third place. The Eagles are substantial favorites over Hawthorne, but the Cougars may possess the ability to overcome some adversity. They do possess enough offensive talent to put up points. The Eagles dominated a weak South Torrance(0-5), 42-0 last week. Hawthorne lost a 51-50 barn-burner to Glenn(3-3) of Norwalk last week. Hawthorne has not scored less than 28 points in any one game this year, but El Segundo is the highest rated opponent they are facing so far this season.

Touchdowns by Ramon Coe and Parker Merrifield sparks Eastlake in win over El Camino

By David A. Willauer-Contributing Writer-Herb Meyer Stadium-Oceanside, CA-9-22-18-In a high scoring game with a lot of passing tonight's game was one of them. After the Wildcats of El Camino went on the board 3-0 on a Zion Jackson 32 yard field goal in the first quarter, the Titans with their quick back came on as they went to a 14-3 lead on touchdown runs of Parker Merrifield 18 yarder and Roman Coe's 16 yarder go to up 14-3.

The Wildcats cut the lead to 5 at 14-9 as quarterback Brock Mamber scored on a 66 yarder run in the second quarter. Eastlake followed with another touchdown as running back Parker Merrifield rushed for 177 yards and scored his second touchdown of the day on a 22 yarder to put the Titans up 22-9.

The Cats came back to cut the lead to 6 at 22-16 as qb Brock Manber who went 6 completions out of 15 attempts for 79 yards and 2 interceptions for touchdowns threw a 44 yard pass to Joseph Wilkins for the score. Then Eastlake connected on a 29 yard field goal by Darius DeLaRosa to go up 25-16.

El Camino came within 2 points on a 3 yard touchdown run by Rance Gardiner 12-76 yards made it close at 25-23.

The Titans scored the next 3 touchdowns as tailback Ramon Coe scored his second touchdown on a 5 yard run 15 carries for 111 yards along with 2 interceptions for touchdowns by Max Susi for 14 yards and by Quinton Johnson for 47 yards put the Titans up 46-23 before El Camino's last touchdown was scored by Zion Jackson to make the final score 46-31 in favor of the Eastlake Titans.

John McFadden Eastlake High School Football Coach: "We knew El Camino had a lot of speed, as we played good teams, El Camino is the quickest team ever, everytime they score touchdowns it is all on the big plays but our backs." "Roman Cole and Parker Merrifield did well at running the football and give credit to our offensive line, they made the key blocks when we ran a new offensive called the Wing T and the plays worked well for us and know what their responsibilities are and they have open the holes for us and our quarterback has been so good."

"Our defense made 2 good interceptions that were the key plays for our squad Maximus Susi came up caught the ball in the middle for a 14 yard score and Quinton Johnson is a heck of an athlete waded in at time and now is playing high level football as he ran 47 yards for the other interception score." said Coach McFadden.

This game was stopped at 1:57 left in the contest do to some fighting on the football field.

With the win the Eastlake Titans improves to 5-1 and will take on the Crusaders of Mater Dei High School next Friday while El Camino with the loss fall to 1-4 will take on the Broncos of Rancho Bernardo in a homecoming contest.

Ocean League update before games of weekend 9/21

The Culver City Centaurs(3-1) post of the last couple of weeks is up. Next they face their last non-league opponent for the regular season, the Dorsey Dons(0-4). Don't be fooled by that record, Dorsey is as good as most 0-4 teams would like to be, but the Centaurs should still be significant favorites in this contest to be played at Culver City.

Not much has changed in the Ocean League as to what we have seen in recent years. Lawndale(3-1) is still the big dog on campus and they looked it last week in their 47-7 victory over Crenshaw. Next, Lawndale takes on what is presumed to be the #1 team in the entire LA City section, Narbonne(2-3).

The El Segundo Eagles(2-2) are looking like the probable third place team in the Ocean League. They beat Pioneer League cream-puff Torrance(0-4), by a score of 49-6 and next face another Pioneer League cream-puff, South Torrance(0-4).

The Hawthorne Cougars(3-1) currently project as the fourth place finisher in the Ocean League and closer to 5th, than 4th, but this is the line that I have the hardest time trusting. The team appears possessed with size on line and speed in the backfield and the QB can throw the ball. They have scored more than 40 points in 3 of their 4 games. While their first 3 games were against cream-puffs, they gave rival Leuzinger(3-1) a significant challenge before losing 50-44 last week. If your team plays a bad game against these guys, they might have the tools to beat you. This week they face a team that rates out as just slightly better than Hawthorne, the Glenn Eagles(2-3) of Norwalk. It should be an appropriate sized challenge for Hawthorne. The Eagles are slightly favored.

The Santa Monica Vikings(1-3) project to 5th in the Ocean League, just a little lower than Hawthorne. Their defense has helped keep them in games, not giving up more that 28 in any of the 4 games already played. They should be able to secure a win in their next game against Godinez(1-3) of Santa Ana.

The Beverly Hills Normans(1-3)still hold the cellar position in the Ocean League and don't look willing to abandon that position. After the season opening victory over Sotomayer broke their losing streak, they immediatly commenced on what is now a 3 game losing streak, by falling to Cerritos 44-6 last week. This week, the Normans have their best and last chance of the season, to get another victory, against Firebaugh(1-4), of Lynwood.

Culver City suffers first loss, barely.

The Culver City Centaurs(3-1) have been playing some exciting football, win or lose. Against the Warren Bears(2-2) they pulled out a last minute 34-28 victory on a TD pass with seconds on the clock, from Zevi Echaus, to Kevin McGuire. Last Friday's contest was similar in that the contest was a battle throughout but the Centaurs came up short this time in a 36-37 loss to Palos Verdes(1-3) at PV. The Centaurs went with junior QB Nick Lucero instead of prior starter, sophomore Zevi Echaus. Reasons for the switch are unknown by this fan but the passing game did not seem to suffer as Lucero was 22 of 29 for 359 yards and apparently no interceptions, but the Centaur run game was a problem as they were only to able to generate 84 yards on the ground(after amassing 339 on the ground against Warren) and 48 of those came on 1 run by Joshua Ford. On the other side, PV struggled with the pass, doing perhaps just enough to get the victory behind their successful run game going for 227 yards on 47 carries. 27 of those carries were by junior Ryan Wilson who fought hard for 146 yards and 3 TD's. The Centaurs intercepted 3 PV passes and returned a fumble for a TD but still came up just short against a well regarded PV team. PV is not rated by the CIFss in Division 5 at this time, due to their record, but calpreps.com focuses less on record and has PV rated as the 5th best team in Division 5 right now. They are once again, the favorites to win the Bay League championship.

KJ Mazzetti 2 touchdown passes pace Valley Center Jaguars to a 31-0 win

By David A. Willauer-Contributing Writer-Saturday, September 15, 2018-Longhorn Field-Rancho Buena Vista High School-Vista, CA-Jaguars qb KJ Mazzetti's 2 touchdown passes of 84 to Lance Roach and 9 yards to AJ Springer paced Valley Center at 3-2 to a 31-0 win over the 2-3 Longhorns of Rancho Buena Vista

Mateo Sinohui rushed for 167 yards and scored a touchdown run of 9 yards, Jesus Saldana kicked a 39 yard field goal and Hayden Burkey ran a 20 yard interception for the other score.

Rob Gilster in his 8th year as head coach of Valley Center High School: "As we had the ball and my qb (KJ Mazzetti) made some outstanding throws to his receivers we did well on the offensive side and shut them (RBV) out which was an accomplishment."

"Hayden Burkey who ran the 20 yard interception we have gone over that same play in practice everyday were used to that screen." "Mateo Sinohui is a hard runner the offensive line did great as they blocked and left open holes for him he runs hard to get the extra yards Offensive line wise we did very well blocking up front and contributing to our squad." "KJ Mazzetti is a good qb for us to be successful we want to be 50 50 we need to throw and run the ball When we prepared to play RBV our offense started to put the puzzle together and the pieces were in place." said Coach Gilster

For RBV, Dorian Richardson rushed for 126 yards

The Jaguars of Valley Center will host Fallbrook next Friday while the Longhorns will take on the Cougars of Escondido on the road both on Friday night at 7:00 pm

Is it wrong to win your own contest?...Normally I am not very good at picking the teams, but this season I actually have a chance to win...Let's not forget; it's called the Inland Empire. And an Empire needs an Emperor...If I can pull this off, I may have to change my user name. LOL.

Week 4 belongs to King Marques I...His 28 wins are a season high for our contest...It is his second STAR of the season moving him onto the top of the STAR Leaderboard with FmrOlineguy.

Week 4 saw the favorites win 31 of the 38 games, straight up. On the season the favorites are 135-48 straight up.

When the point spreads were included 15 more games flipped to the dogs who beat the spread. That means it was another tough week for the favorites as they were leashed by the dogs finishing just 16-22. Overall the Favorites have fallen further behind the Dogs, 87-94-2.

One game was decided by the 1/2 point (Aquinas -14 1/2 over Notre Dame 31-17)
