Transfers Aplenty

The summer season is winding down this week and it is time to sort out several players that have switched schools.

Canyon of Canyon Country lost one player but gained two and possibly a third.

Angelica Sahagun left and went to Alemnay of Mission Hills. Canyon picked up junior-to-be forward Alexa Davison from Cleveland of Reseda and guard Vanessa Aguilar from grant of Van Nuys. A third player, sophomore-to-be Brieanna Perkins from Quartz Hill could be headed to Canyon by September as well.

"I liked my team before we got two new players," Canyon coach Stan Delus said. "I like my team now even more."

Foothill League rival Hart of Newhall also picked up a guard from Grant.

Amanda Corona will suit up for the Indians next season.

Grant has been decimated this summer, losing Aguilar and Corona and another starter, Blue Sanders moved to New York.

"People just come in and raid programs now", Grant coach Michael Flot said. "It feels like my heart has been ripped out of my chest. It really is hard to take when you have worked with kids for several years and then they are gone in a flash."

I also learned that Granada Hills guard Skyler Tsutsui has transferred to Harvard-Westlake

A few Cal Sparks Summer Jam results

We caught a little action in the Invitational Division on Saturday.

T.S.I.N. Gold 55, The Truth 29

Jacqui Marshall and Melissa Zornig led TSIN to an easy win in the opener for both teams. TSIN beat Swoosh Gold 58-47 later in the day to take Pool B. The Truth lost to Pacific Fury 45-30 to finish pool play.

Hoop 4 Life Black 59, BBG 38

This game was closer than the score makes it look. BBG came out strong and looked dominant. Then the roof fell in as H4L ran off 16 straight points to lead 23-14. It was 27-18 at the half and BBG stayed fairly close for much of the second half until H4L exploded to the finish with a big run. BBG has a legitimate star in Gennifer Brandon, who needs a little more polish and she'll be unstoppable. H4L has an intriguing new player in Betina Chateau who is from France and is just beginning her career in the U.S. She'll be attending Santa Monica high school and is someone to watch. She's got both size and athleticism, but needs to be a little more aggressive.

Cal Sparks Gold went on to beat Hoop 4 Life, 58-44 to take Pool A. BBG knocked off Nevada Elite 49-44.

San Fernando Valley Jaguars 45, C.H.A. 40

The Jags played okay the first half but were a little sluggish so coach Charles White had them run a little at halftime. They took charge in the second half and held off a late CHA rally to win. They've got a solid nucleus in Monica Jackson and Rmanii Haynes but got plenty of help from Nicole Hicks and Samantha Seals. Cal Storm Elite beat them 64-58 to take Pool C. CHA lost to LA Swish Red in its next game.

Other Pool winners:

D: West Coast Premiere Inland Empire
E: LA Swish Gold

CIF-SS rules that high school coaches can coach in off-season

Per CIF news release:

LOS ALAMITOS. For the first time in 32 years the CIF Southern Section will eliminate out-of-season restrictions on coaches working with their student-athletes.

In a 41-37 vote of the CIF Southern Section Council, Rule 313 of the CIF Southern Section Constitution and By-Laws (otherwise known as the “Bluebook”) will be eliminated from the by-laws beginning July 1, 2008.

Rule 313, otherwise referred to as the “Association Rule” read:

During the school year, prior to the established date for authorized before and after-school practice in a particular sport and following an individual’s or team’s last authorized competition, a student may receive athletic instruction in a CIF Southern Section approved sport only during one regularly scheduled physical education period in which the student is enrolled and earning credit for that particular sport. (Note: Before and after-school practice is authorized in all sports from May 12, 2008 until the close of school, maximum 15 days.)

The rule, in effect, eliminated any type of contact between an individual sports coach and a student-athlete in that sport during the school year and outside of the season of sport except for one hour. The responsibility will now rest with individual schools on how much contact a coach and student-athlete can have during the school year.

Two more recruits sign with colleges

Narbonne's Tipesa Moorer signed with Long Beach State, the forward told the Daily Breeze on Thursday.

Moorer becomes the fifth and final starter for Narbonne to accept a scholarship, joining Reiko Thomas (Arizona), Danielle LeNoir (Washington State), Gabrielle Clark (San Diego State) and Briauna Linton (Hawaii).

Moorer had offers from Mississippi Valley State, Manhattan, CSDH, Westmont and Maryland Eastern Shore, but decided on Long Beach State.

Also, Mira Costa's Keri Stephanoff signed with Fresno Pacific. Stephanoff, a key part of Mira Costa's run to the CIF Division II state title game, averaged 5.7 points and 6.8 rebounds.

Stephanoff said she had other offers from Cal State Monterrey Bay, Westmont and Point Loma Nazarene.

LA Times all-star team

The Times' girls' basketball all-star team (alphabetical order):

G Layshia Clarendon, Cajon 5-9 Jr.
A fantastic scorer who was the center of Cajon's emergence as a Southland power, Clarendon averaged 20.7 points, 6.7 assists and 4.0 steals to lead the Cowgirls to their first section title.

F Courtney Clements, Millikan 6-1 Sr.
The Rams, the only Southland team to beat Poly the last two seasons, were Division I-AA runners-up. A threat from anywhere on the floor, Arizona-bound Clements provided 30% of the offense with 17.7 points on 65.1% shooting. She also averaged 12.2 rebounds.

G-F Jasmine Dixon, Long Beach Poly 5-10 Sr. (Player of the Year)
The Times player of the year and perhaps the Southland's strongest player, Dixon transformed Poly from a very good team to a great one that won three section and three state titles in her four seasons. Headed to Rutgers, she averaged 14.1 points, 10.1 rebounds, 4.2 steals and 3.2 assists.

G Rebekah Gardner, Ayala 6-0 Sr.
One of the Southland's most prolific scorers over her career, UCLA-bound Gardner averaged 19.7 points for the Bulldogs, who were beaten in the Southern California Regional finals by Mira Costa in triple overtime. She also averaged 8.1 rebounds, 3.9 steals and 3.1 assists.

F Mikah Maly-Karros, Mira Costa 6-1 Sr.
Tenacious rebounder was a big scorer for the state finalist Mustangs. Maly-Karros, who is headed to Loyola Marymount, averaged 18.1 points and 15.9 rebounds and with Megan Richardson formed one of the Southland's best 1-2 punches.

G-F Christina Marinacci Foothill 6-1 Jr.
Marinacci was the classic "big guard" player who did it all for Foothill and raised the program into the top 25. She committed last week to USC after averaging 21.5 points, 11.7 rebounds, 3.5 steals and 2.5 assists for the Division I-A quarterfinalist.

G-F Atonye Nyingifa, Redondo 5-11 Sr.
One of the most skilled all-around players in the Southland, UCLA-bound Nyingifa led Redondo to the Division I-A title in a supposedly rebuilding season. She averaged 21.2 points, 12.2 rebounds, and scored 2,192 points in her career.

G Nikki Speed, L.A. Marlborough 5-9 Sr.
The small-school Mustangs won four consecutive section titles with Speed in the lineup. A deft ball-handler who thinks two and three passes ahead, the Rutgers-bound point guard averaged 17.8 points, 10.5 assists and 4.8 rebounds.

G/F Reiko Thomas, Narbonne 5-9 Sr.
Despite its third coach in three years, Narbonne continued as the City's preeminent program with a stellar class that included Danielle LeNoir and Gabrielle Clark. Thomas was the go-to player, and the Arizona-bound lefty delivered 16.1 points on 47.4% shooting.

G Chloe Wells, Miller 5-7 So.
Despite her youth, Wells has already established herself as one of the Southland's clutch players. She averaged 17.5 points, 5.7 assists and 4.8 steals for the Division II-AA champion Rebels.

Coach of the year: Ann Larson, Ventura
Ventura didn't have a player average more than seven points, but featured a tenacious defense that allowed only 33.4 points. Cougars finished 27-3, with two losses -- to Perris and Cajon -- by a combined three points. Closed the season with quarterfinal victory at Brea Olinda, and a 49-43 loss to Millikan in a Division I-AA semifinal, during which free-throw attempts were 28-8 in favor of Millikan.
