Oregon is confident that DT Tomuhini “TomTom” Topui (Mater Dei) won't flip while at USC's Junior Day event this weekend (or at any time thereafter)

Here is commentary from Scott Reed, Rivals Oregon publisher:

Oregon currently has two four-star commits—defensive tackle Tomuhini Topui and another prospect who are both taking visits to USC this weekend. If you follow recruiting closely, you know that teams will always keep knocking on the doors of elite prospects.

Topui, known as “TomTom,” is one of those players who’s been high on Oregon’s board for a while. He’s also someone that I'm less worried about flipping. Here's why.

The City Section to punish schools that forfeited games to Narbonne

Two months after four Marine League coaches united to have their schools forfeit football games to Narbonne in protest of alleged rule violations, the City Section is proposing penalties to schools for forfeiting league games.

The first reading of the proposal will be held this month by the City Section Executive Committee and Board of Managers. It includes possible exclusion from the postseason for schools forfeiting as a first offense. The City Section recognizes reasons for forfeiting, such as lack of players or overscheduling. But what the coaches did left the City Section with no options on how to respond.

There’s also other proposals, such as a new football mercy rule that would initiate a running clock after halftime with a 42-point margin and a proposal to add a Division IV football playoff division.

CIF-SS adjusts transfer rules and playing on Sundays for fire-victim athletes

With so many families devastated by fires in Southern California, the CIF is waiving transfer rules for those affected by being displaced or losing their homes.

There will be a form available to schools to fill out to expedite transfer eligibility.

The CIF-SS has also temporarily suspended the rule banning competitions on Sundays to allow teams affected by the fires to play on Sundays if needed to finish their seasons.

The City Section has extended the regular season by a week for basketball and soccer and won’t start playoffs until Feb. 19.

UCLA coaches hit recruiting trail, stop by Newbury Park

Per Tracy McDannald, Rivals UCLA staff writer:

While other staff headed to Texas, Florida, Washington, and NorCal, UCLA head coach DeShaun Foster and director of player personnel Stacey Ford, among other notable stops, traveled to Newbury Park on Thursday to see 2026 five-star quarterback Brady Smigiel, 2026 three-star receiver Devin Olmande and 2025 three-star receiver Shane Rosenthal.

Smigiel is currently committed to Florida State and Rosenthal is committed to Princeton. Olmande, who recently transferred after playing at West Hills (Calif.) Chaminade last season, said he plans to visit UCLA on Jan. 25. He was among the recruits in attendance at the Rose Bowl when the Bruins hosted Minnesota on Oct. 12.

Here are some of the effects on sports activities after the devastating fires

The Los Angeles Unified School District canceled sports Wednesday through the weekend and has also canceled practices and games for Monday.

The Gold Coast League, made up of Brentwood, Windward, Campbell Hall, Crossroads and Viewpoint, is expected to cancel all sporting events this week and resume Jan. 21. Brentwood’s campus is closed all week.

The Palisades boys and girls basketball teams were preparing to practice in the school gym when told the evacuate.

Loyola’s student body was greatly affected, with families losing homes in Pasadena/Altadena and Pacific Palisades.

With hundreds of homes destroyed, the California Interscholastic Federation has provisions for parents to gain athletic eligibility for their affected children through hardship waivers. Individual schools can make the appeal.
