Not since 2003 have we had a week like this. Back then, it was fire that caused the disruption. This week it was all about the lightning...But we did not lack for drama...Heading into the four Monday games, half our posters had a chance to earn the coveted STAR...So the week was long, but the results were dramatic.

The Culver City Centaurs (6-2, 2-1) were able to keep most of the El Segundo Eagles (4-4, 1-2) in check for the part of the game they were allowed to play. The Centaurs opened the scoring in the first quarter with a 35 yard TD pass from Zevi Echaus. They followed that up with a 42yd TD run by Joshua Ford. Ford had another nifty 41yd run that led to the third TD of the first quarter.

The Eagles were struggling to keep up with the Centaurs. Eagle QB Matt Romero was the one factor of significant success with his legs. He broke free for a couple of long runs that tried to keep Eagle drives alive. The Centaurs closed out the scoring with another TD in the second quarter. The lightning became too dangerous and the game was called in the second quarter.

Next week, the Centaurs face Hawthorne. The Cougars are a potential trap game for the Centaurs in that Culver is expected to win, but Hawthorne has all the physical tools to be successful.

The Hawthorne Cougars (4-3, 1-1) were supposed to play the Beverly Hills Normans (2-5, 0-2) on Friday night, but it looks like the teams agreed to a Monday game at 4pm. The Cougars game against the Normans is important to Hawthorne because they need the win to get to 5 wins which will allow them to submit paperwork for playoff eligibility. If they drop the game against the Normans, they would have to beat either Culver City or Lawndale.

The Lawndale Cardinals (6-2, 3-0) did just enough in their closely fought game against the Santa Monica Vikings (3-5, 1-2), to win 13-6. They apparently could not come to an agreement on when & where to finish the game after it was suspended. The Cardinals next face El Segundo.

The Beverly Hills Normans will be traveling to face the Santa Monica Vikings, next Friday.

By David A. Willauer-Contributing Writer-10-12-18-The Caimens of Classical Academy behind QB James Duncan's threw for 69 yards total along with 4 touchdown passes. Aiden Sutherlin had 47 yards receiving and 2 scores, Damien Castaneda had 97 yards receiving and 2 touchdown receptions, Diego Preciado carried the ball for 73 along with a touchdown run.

With the win the Caimens of Classical Academy improve to 5-3 and will take on The Bishops School next Friday, October 19, 2018 in LaJolla.

The Northview Vikings (7-0, 2-0) of Covina and the Valle Vista League, are ranked #1 in the calpreps.com ratings, #2 in the CIFss poll. They had an easy time of it against one of the Valle Vista downtrodden, beating Baldwin Park (1-6, 0-2) 49-0. Things will get tougher for the rest of league play, but not so much that there should be any concern about making playoffs. In a worst case scenario, the Vikings could lose 2 of 3, but are unlikely to do even that. But one win would still be enough to lock up a Division 7 playoff spot.

Next week's opponent, the Covina Colts (4-3, 1-1) might be good enough to make the upset, but they certainly won't be favored against Northview. The Vikings have not given up more than 14 points to any team in any one game this year and that was only in the first game of the year. That Viking defense will have its best test so far this year as the Colts have not been held to less than 27 points in any one game. Calpreps.com projection: Northview 44-27

#2 by calpreps.com is the Culver City Centaurs (5-2, 1-1). The CIFss has them as #5. They have won 1 league game that they needed to win and lost the game last week that they were expected to lose, to the Lawndale Cardinals (5-2, 2-0) by 27-34. The next two weeks are crucial games in which the Centaurs may be heavily favored but are the ones that have the potential for upset. Next Friday, the Centaurs have the El Segundo Eagles (4-3, 1-1) at home. The Eagles, now ranked #20 in Division 7, have had their struggles this year, sustaining a devastating 28-41 league loss to Hawthorne in the opening week. Now they must win at least 1 of their last 3 to even get wild card consideration and 2 of 3 to get back into a possible playoff spot.

The Centaurs are heavily favored but this has become somewhat of a rivalry game and the Eagles do still possess a very talented QB Matt Romero who has thrown for almost 1,000 yards this season and can run the ball very well. He has the most rushing TD's on the team and I suspect that he will have the green light to run whenever he wants with the playoff situation getting so desperate for the Eagles. Calpreps projection: Culver City 52-14. I believe it will be closer.

#3 are the San Jacinto Tigers (7-0, 2-0) of the Mountain Pass League. They are #1 in the CIFss D-7 poll. The Tigers had an easy 49-0 win over league doormat, the West Valley Mustangs (1-6, 0-2) of Hemet, last week. The week before was a bit of a scare in their league opener against Beaumont (4-3, 0-2). They won by a score of just 22-16. While the Tigers should be able to win at least 1 of their last three, only 1 more win would affect their opening round playoff positioning. Next week's opponent, Hemet (4-3, 1-1) rates as just slightly tougher than Beaumont. Still, the calpreps projection: San Jacinto 38-13

#4 are the Citrus Valley Blackhawks (6-1, 2-0) of Redlands and the Citrus Belt League. They are #3 in the CIFss poll. The Blackhawks have already won the two league games that they were expected to, but now face a tough threesome of games in which they are significant underdogs in 2 of them and only slight favorites in the final regular season game against Yucaipa (4-3, 1-1).

Their 6 wins so far should allow them to qualify for playoff consideration as a wild card entrant even if they cannot win the necessary game against Yucaipa to lock up third place and a guaranteed playoff spot. Coming from the tough Citrus Belt league should carry significant weight in any decision about wild card playoff selections. A win against Yucaipa allows the Blackhawks to guarantee their own playoff destiny. As for this week, Citrus Valley hosts Cajon (6-1, 2-0). projection: Cajon (San Bernardino, CA) 46-19

#5 are the Millikan Rams (4-2, 2-1) who had a bye last week. The Rams have already won their two games that were the most dangerous challenge that could have upset their playoff hopes. They should be able to win at least 2 of their remaining three and be assured of no less than a third place finish and a guaranteed playoff spot. However, a win against Wilson (5-3, 3-1) could get them second place in the Moore League and a better playoff spot. But first they play Cabrillo (2-5, 1-2) of Long Beach. Projection: Millikan 38-3.

#6 are the Valencia Tigers (6-1, 2-0) of Placentia and the Empire League. They beat Tustin (2-5, 1-1) 27-7 last week. The Tigers are likely to cruise through the rest of Empire League play with only fellow Division 7 opponent Pacifica (4-3, 2-0) of Garden Grove offering any resistance. As for this week, the Tigers face lowly Kennedy (2-5, 0-2) of La Palma. Projection: Valencia (Placentia, CA) 35-0

#7 are the Warren Bears (4-3, 1-1) of Downey. They gave quite the challenge to highly rated Paramount (3-4, 2-0) before losing 21-24 last week. This week they face the one remaining team with any sort of chance of upsetting them, the Gahr Gladiators (3-4, 2-0). But Gahr is still a heavy underdog. projection: Warren (Downey, CA) 44-26

The Culver City Centaurs (5-2, 1-1) had an exciting game with the Ocean League favorite, the Lawndale Cardinals (5-2, 2-0) but fell to the Cardinals 34-27. Centaur QB Zevi Echaus threw for 294 yards and 2 TD's. Centaur Kevin McGuire was a top receiver with 8 catches for 104 yards and 1 TD. While the Centaurs were somewhat successful throwing the ball, they struggled trying to get any consistent run game going.

The story was similar but opposite for the Cardinals as their passing game was ineffective, but their running game was able to hold the day. The teams' total offensive yards were very similar totals. The Cardinals star RB Jordan Wilmore came up with a leg injury and was limited after early success but QB Jalon Daniels and back up RB Jonathan Watson were able to do enough to generate the Cardinal offense and help limit the Centaur offensive chances. The Lawndale defense held the Centaurs to the fewest points this season.

The Cardinals are now securely in control of the Ocean League having defeated their most likely challenger and all other teams now having at least 1 loss. The battle for second and third place will be quite interesting with 4 teams currently tied at 1-1 in league play.

In the next most challenging game, the Santa Monica Vikings (3-4, 1-1) were able to upset the Hawthorne Cougars (4-3, 1-1) 29 to 21. While not all would call this an upset, that is my opinion. The Vikings relied mostly on the skill of their junior QB Anthony Arnou who was 12 of 24 for 286 yards and 4 TD's. Senior RB Zaire Martin-Thomas contributed with 77 yards rushing on 11 carries.

The Cougars were leading 7-6 after 1 quarter, but the Vikings somehow put up 20 points on the scoreboard in the second quarter. The Cougars had 78 offensive plays to the Vikings 47, 26 first downs to the Vikings 15 and they dominated in time of possession, but it was not enough to secure a win.

The El Segundo Eagles (4-3, 1-1) easily dispensed with the league doormat Beverly Hills Normans (2-5, 0-2) by a score of 50-0. After the Eagles lost to Hawthorne last week, they have dug themselves a hole and must find a way to win one of their last three to get a chance at a wild card entry in the Division 7 playoffs. After losing to Hawthorne, it would be a surprise to see them win 2 of their last three.

Week 7 was perhaps a Championship week as FmrOlineguy won a STAR for the third time this season to take our STAR lead...His 22 wins this week outpaced the closest competitor by 4 games...Are 3 STARs enough to win it all?...with just 3 weeks remaining, we will find out.

When the point spreads were included 15 games flipped to the dogs. That means the Favorites were destroyed by the Dogs this week, going only 10-20...There were also 3 Ties...Overall the Favorites have fallen further behind the Dogs 126-140-5.

Ted Merrifield 2 field goals Max Bingham's 5 yard touchdown sparks Torrey Pines in win

Willauer-Contributing Writer-Falcon Stadium-Torrey Pines High School-San Diego, CA: In a well contested football game that was held at Torrey Pines High School, the Falcons scored on Ted Merrifield's 2 field goals of 25 and 24 yards each and tailback Max Bingham's (18 carries for 77 yards) scored the only touchdown on a 5 yard run as they defeated the much improved Mission Hills Grizzlies by a close 13-7 score.

The Grizzlies got their only touchdown in the 4th quarter as tailback Justin Castro 11 carries for 26 yards scored on a 1 yard run

Torrey Pines Contributors QB Jason Heine 10 completions out of 11 attempts for 173 yards
Evan Galuzzi 10 carries for 45 yards. Luke Mikolowski 8 receptions for 174 yards.

Mission HIlls Contributors: QB Joey Armentrout 16 completions out of 23 attempts for 102 yards Quinton Hadnot 8 receptions for 122 yards

With the win the Falcons of Torrey Pines improves their record to 7-0 overall 3-0 in Avocado League will host the Knights of San Marcos while the Grizzlies Mission Hills 2-5 overall and 1-2 in the Avocado League and will host Lacosta Canyon who defeated Valley Center 30-19.

The #1 Northview Vikings (6-0) had an easy dominating 42-0 victory over lowly Wilson (2-4, 0-1) to open their Valle Vista League play. Next week could be even easier as they face Baldwin Park(1-5, 0-1)

#2 the San Jacinto Tigers (6-0, 1-0) got a scare in their Mountain Pass League opener against Beaumont (4-2, 0-1). Beaumont took the lead at 16-14 in the third quarter and held it until about 7 minutes were left in the game when the Tigers scored a rushing TD and a 2pt conversion to win a close 22-16 game. Beaumont projects to finish 3rd in league although a couple of teams might have enough talent to challenge that projection.

#4 The Citrus Valley Blackhawks (5-1, 1-0) is the highest ranked team in Division 7 that might have a real possibility of missing the playoffs. They opened league play against their easiest league opponent, Redlands (1-5, 0-1), with a 47-13 win. Next they face the almost equally as bad as Redlands, the Carter Lions (1-5, 0-1) of Rialto.

#5 are the Crescenta Valley Falcons (6-0, 3-0) and they took care of business with a 28-7 win over Burroughs (1-5, 1-2). The Falcons face one their two biggest remaining challenges in league play as they travel to face the Burbank Bulldogs (3-3, 2-1).
