Ziaire Williams and Joshua Christopher Commit

A pair of five-star McDonalds All-Americans from Southern California announced their college choices in the past day.

A few minutes ago Christopher committed to the Arizona State University. The 6’5 guard is ranked 13th in the Rivals150 for the class of 2020. The Mayfair guard is the Sun Devils first five-star recruit since 2007. They landed another guard from the city of Lakewood that year, James Harden, who was ranked 11th coming out of Artesia High School. He joins his older brother Caleb in Tempe, who was a reserve as a freshman for ASU. They are the younger brothers of former Cal and Compton Dominguez standout Patrick Christopher. He averaged 29 points, 11 rebounds, 4.4 assists, and 3.5 steals per game as a senior for the Monsoons.

At 1:30 on Easter Sunday, Williams committed to Stanford University. The 6’8 forward is ranked 6th in the Rivals150 for the class of 2020. He is Stanford’s first top 10 recruit since they landed the 10th ranked Brook Lopez and 28th ranked Robin Lopez in the class of 2006, the twin duo from San Joaquin Memorial in Fresno. The Sierra Canyon swingman was recruited hard by Stanford Head Coach Jerod Haase and assistant coaches Adam Cohen and Jesse Pruitt, who began recruiting him as a freshman at Notre Dame High School. He averaged 15 points and almost eight rebounds per game for the Trailblazers, who were the top ranked team in California this past season.

UPDATE - CIF 2020 Spring Sports Season

Per CIF press release issued this afternoon (excerpts):

SACRAMENTO, CALIF. – Today the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) State Office and the 10 Section Commissioners held their annual scheduled spring meeting. The agenda included a discussion concerning the impact of COVID-19 on the 2020 CIF spring sports season.

While the time may come when we have to cancel post-season events, today is not that day.

In anticipation of further guidance and directives issued by federal, state and local government agencies regarding COVID-19, the CIF has not determined the future of spring sports events at this time and intends to reconvene with the 10 Section Commissioners on April 3 to revisit this issue.

Pending that time, Sections will continue to confer with their local leadership and the State CIF will continue to monitor any directives and recommendations issued from the above entities.

Here's the CIF press release on cancellation of State Championship games

SACRAMENTO, CALIF. – Effective Immediately - The California Interscholastic Federation ("CIF") has canceled all remaining CIF State Basketball Championship games. This includes regional finals scheduled for March 12, 2020, and the CIF State finals scheduled for March 13-14, 2020 at Golden 1 Center in Sacramento. This decision was made after careful deliberation and in the primary interest of protecting the health and safety of our member schools, fans, and most importantly, our student-athletes. While we understand this decision is disappointing, we strongly believe that the opportunity to compete in this event does not outweigh our obligation to place the health and safety of our member schools and school communities above all else.

We want to recognize the hard work and commitment our student-athletes have made to reach the State Basketball Championships. The impact of COVID-19 created many unexpected challenges during this year’s tournament season, and we want to thank everyone involved for their flexibility, patience, and commitment in providing our student-athletes a great experience despite this unique situation.

For those that have already purchased tickets for the March 13-14, 2020 games at Golden 1 Center, refunds will be made available at the original point of purchase. If tickets were purchased online via ticketmaster.com, refunds will be processed automatically.

Potential impact of Coronavirus on elite high school players

Per Corey Evans, Rivals.com Basketball Analyst:

The major high school all-star games are just weeks away. Might they be locked down or canceled altogether? The Jordan Brand Classic is set for March 27, the McDonald’s All-American Game is scheduled for 10 days later and the Nike Hoop Summit is on the books for the second weekend in April. It stand to reason that their fate will be decided sometime soon, too.

The elite prospects that have been invited to participate in these events have worked their entire lives for such a unique experience. That all might be taken away. So, too, could the Nike EYBL, Under Armour Association and adidas Gauntlet circuits that begin next month. Those events being shut down could prevent some high school prospects from earning an athletic scholarship.

Time will tell what happens with these events, but there is a strong chance that the coronavirus pandemic will impact college basketball for years to come.

Rivals.com National Analyst Eric Bossi reports:

"Recently, his posts have led to speculation that he’s set a a decision date for April 13. I called Christopher’s father Laron Christopher to see if that date was when his son would be announcing.

'No, there’s no date set,' the elder Christopher told me.

The most specific that Mr. Christopher could get about a decision date was that it was “coming soon."

Cathedral Catholic defeats Delmar Heights Road Rival Torrey Pines for the 2020 Boys CIF San Diego Section Finals-RIMAC Arena-University of California at San Diego-LaJolla, CA-2-29-20-

By David A. Willauer-Contributing Editor-

For the Boys Open Division Finals 18 points by Obinna Anayanwu and 16 by Thomas Notarainni paced the top seed Cathedral Catholic Dons at 24-8 on the season as they defeated the 2019 defending CIF Section Champion and 3rd Falcons of Torrey Pines at 26-5 by a 59-51 score.

Will Cunningham Head Boys Basketball Coach at Cathedral Catholic: "From the beginning to the end it was going to be a battle, we played them early in the season with a legendary coach (John Olive) of Torrey Pines." "This is our second year playing in the Open Division as most of our guys returned from last year as they know each other very well we knew it was going to be a battle to the end as we persevered."

"In the first game when we played Torrey Pines at their Falcon Christmas Tournament that game went back and fourth the whole time, in tonight's game in the first half we missed layups and committed too many turnovers." "When we trailed by 6 our offense executed well and looked for key baskets to put us up 34-30 we made great plays and looked for the open shots in a game like this you need extra possessions to stretch it out." "Our squad did well rebounding the ball in the second half and did well executing on offense." "Obinna Anayanwu and Thomas Notarainni have been our leading scorers throughout the season second half they came through for our squad."

Stanford bound Brandon Angel led the Falcons with 16 and teammate Chris Howell contributed with 12.

Both of these schools will await word of the CIF State

"My 3 headed monsters Te Hina Pao Pao, Breya Cunningham and Jazzy Anousinh performed well throughout the game that's how we won." "Were excited where we are as the 1 seed but wait until the CIF Selection show make the choice." said Coach Banford.
