Story on Coach Dante Carey

San Marcos Dante Carey Finds Success in his 19th year as basketball coach

By David A. Willauer-Contributing Writer-February 7, 2025-San Marcos High School-San Marcos, CA: The Knights of San Marcos known for their tradition in athletics once again rule the gymnasium tonight as they defeated the Titans of Poway by an 60-39 score and with the victory they improve their record to 23-3 under 19th year head coach Dante Carey. This is Coach Carey's 11 20 game total victories.

At the beginning of the season the Knights were defeated by Montgomery, Mater Dei and Lincoln High from Stockton, CA in a tournament

In tonight's contest vs. Poway, the Knights were led by Jalen Williams with 13, Richie Ramirez and Chris Crowell each with 12 and Elias Flaim with 10 along with an 8 game victory streak

Head Coach Dante Carey: "It feels good to get the win tonight, Head Coach Corey Clark does a great job at Poway as they defended well on defense and played their best game."

" We have two shooters that can shoot the ball when they are open and needed to work on taking the perfect shots." "Poway has a lot of shooters and talent, Grant Rodriguez shot the ball well but defensively we played very well guarding some of their players said." Coach Carey.

San Marcos travels to Westview High to take on the Wildcats and will host Mission HIlls in a Discovery Bowl battle tapoff is 7 PM

Coach Dante Carey on his playing and coaching career at San Marcos.

In 1998 Coach Carey graduated from San Marcos while playing basketball all 4 year. His freshman and sophomore years came off the bench on JV and his last 2 years started and is currently the school's All Time Assists Leader.

Palomar and San Francisco State 2 years each: "At Palomar College I stayed local with my friends, as the Comets had a good team with Mission Hills girls head coach and Palomar Comets assistant basketball coach Chris Kroesch then moving to San Francisco State I had an excellent career there". said Coach Carey.

In his first year as head coach in 2006-2007, the Knights went 10-15, 2007-08 17-11, 2008-09 17-11, in 2009-10 registered his first 20 win season in school history after that currently has 11 20 win seasons under Coach Carey.

"After graduating from San Francisco State I started as a JV head coach at Francis Parker School with Head Coach Ryan Meyer, since a lot of kids chose to stay in private school I wanted to have them to be local in this area." said coach Carey.

Coach Carey on his 300th career win in 2022: "I registered my 300th career win at the Mission Bay High School Basketball Tournament, I was very pleased about my career win."

On Coach Carey's 11th 20 win season at San Marcos: "I didn't know it until you just spoke to me about the info, it's not about me it's the kids they come here to work hard." "My staff is the longevity of that." "Coaching basketball is a long season as we continue year around working for us to be successful

On the 8 game win streak 23-3 ranked in San Diego Section "There are a lot of outstanding teams in the San Diego area with a lot of good teams that were ranked in the beginning of the season, we played competitive teams from Lincoln High School in Stockton CA which has an amazing ball club along with Mater Dei in Orange County is outstanding team as we fought tooth and nail against them," " The Montgomery High Aztecs from the East County area is one of the speedier teams when playing basketball they are like a well oiled machine." said Coach Carey.

Preparing for Westview and Mission Hills: " Right now we have to focus on the Westview Wolverines this coming Tuesday if we can play good solid basketball we will be ready for Mission HIlls." said Coach Carey

Entering the final stretch for Open Division playoff pairings

Per Eric Sonheimer, LA Times:

All signs point toward Harvard-Westlake and Eastvale Roosevelt being No. 1 and No. 2 seeds in the Open Division boys pairings when the Southern Section releases its final pairings Saturday. Of course, both need to finish up the regular season this week. Harvard-Westlake is expected to host the Mission League tournament championship game Wednesday. Roosevelt is scheduled to face Corona Centennial on Tuesday.

The other teams remain in flux. The closeness of the Trinity League race for first place will play a big part in which eight teams make the Open Division. Santa Margarita had a breakthrough week with wins over St. John Bosco and JSerra, putting the Eagles in good position for a spot. Redondo Union is ranked No. 4 and has a big game Tuesday to decide the Bay League title against Mira Costa at home.

La Mirada has been very consistent and is in position to win out. Sierra Canyon’s win over Sherman Oaks Notre Dame at Intuit Dome on Saturday makes the Trailblazers the No. 2 seed for this week’s Mission League tournament and a likely rematch against Notre Dame on Tuesday at home. Remember the Southern Section is using computer rankings to determine its playoff divisions for the first time, so prepare for uncertainty.

In the City Section, with two weeks to go, Westchester, Cleveland and Chatsworth appear to be the three favorites in the Open Division, with the other five spots wide open. Big games this coming week have Fairfax playing Palisades and Palisades taking on Westchester. On Feb. 10, Cleveland is playing at Chatsworth. Washington Prep could be a surprise choice if it wins the Coliseum League as expected. The Generals are 11-2 when they have all their players.

Entering the final stretch for the playoffs

Per Eric Sondheimer, LA Times:

The top four teams in the Southern Section have been clear for months. Ontario Christian, Etiwanda, Sierra Canyon and Mater Dei have separated themselves but there are some developments. Mater Dei has lost one of its top players, Kaeli Wynn, to injury. Sierra Canyon is 22-1 but has yet to play any of the top teams, so there will be lots of intrigue if any team can prevent an Ontario Christian vs. Etiwanda rematch.

In the City Section, Hamilton continues to impress with an 18-2 record and 7-0 mark in the Western League. Birmingham is headed to the West Valley League title and likely No. 2 seed. Hamilton faces Palisades on Feb. 5.

Oregon is confident that DT Tomuhini “TomTom” Topui (Mater Dei) won't flip while at USC's Junior Day event this weekend (or at any time thereafter)

Here is commentary from Scott Reed, Rivals Oregon publisher:

Oregon currently has two four-star commits—defensive tackle Tomuhini Topui and another prospect who are both taking visits to USC this weekend. If you follow recruiting closely, you know that teams will always keep knocking on the doors of elite prospects.

Topui, known as “TomTom,” is one of those players who’s been high on Oregon’s board for a while. He’s also someone that I'm less worried about flipping. Here's why.
