The 2015-16 season marks Coach Springer's 12th as the head coach of the Eagle basketball program and his 16th overall as a community college head coach. Over the past 15 seasons Coach Springer’s teams have averaged 20 wins and qualified for the play-offs 14 times. Since arriving at MSJC Springer’s teams have captured three Foothill Conference titles and one Pacific Coast Athletic Conference North Division crown.
Springer's 2013-14 team won the PCAC North Division title and advanced to the Elite Eight of the State play-offs and finished the season with an overall record of 25-5. The 13-14 season marked the seventh straight season that MSJC had won at least 20 games. During the 2012-13 campaign the Eagles went 21-11.
The 2011-12 MSJC team earned the Foothill Conference title on their way to an overall record of 23-6. The Eagles reached the Elite Eight of the State Play-offs during the 2010-11 season and finished with a 22-9 overall record. MSJC also captured Foothill Conference crowns in 2004 and 2008. The Eagles have a record of 242-101 since Coach Springer’s arrival prior to the 2003-04 season excluding last season. The 2014-15 team went 23-8 under the direction of interim head coach and current Associate head coach Trent Skinner. The 14-15 Eagles also earned the PCAC North Division championship.
Under Coach Springer’s direction 32 players have signed Division I scholarships and many more have moved on to the NCAA Division II and NAIA levels.
Springer began his coaching career in 1991 as an assistant coach at Grand View University in Des Moines, Iowa. After two seasons at the NAIA school, he spent the 1993-94 season at Des Moines Hoover High School where he helped the Huskies to the #1 ranking in Class 4-A in the state of Iowa. The following season Springer returned to the college ranks as an assistant at Penn Valley Community College in Kansas City, Missouri. In his second season the Scouts won the NJCAA Division II National Championship.
Following the championship season at Penn Valley Coach Springer was hired as the head coach at College of the Desert in Palm Desert, CA. Springer led the Roadrunner program for three seasons reaching the Regional Tournament all three years. The 1998-99 season produced the first 20 win season at COD in many years. Following the 20 win season at COD Springer was hired as an assistant coach at NCAA Division I San Jose State University. During his time at San Jose State Coach Springer moved up the ranks from assistant coach to associate head coach in his final season. After three years with San Jose State, Springer went back to the community college level taking over the program at City College of San Francisco. In his one season at CCSF Springer led the Rams to a play-off berth.
A native of Des Moines, Iowa, Springer attended Iowa Western Community College before finishing his playing career at the University of Iowa. Springer set the single season scoring record as a player at Iowa Western and still holds the single season record for field goals made at the school. Patrick was a walk on guard on the Iowa Hawkeye team that reached the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament. After earning his B.A. degree from Iowa Springer later earned his Master’s Degree from Mid-American Nazarene College in Olathe, Kansas. Coach Springer and his wife Lurece live in Hemet with their daughters Simone and Josephine
