Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis of Mater Dei High is the 2008-09 Gatorade California girls' basketball player of the year.
The award honors athletic excellence, academic achievement, and exemplary character, and Mosqueda-Lewis has exceeded in the three categories. She has led the Monarchs to a 31-0 record while maintaining a 3.53 GPA----and she is only a sophomore.
During the season, the 6-foot guard averaged 24 points, 6.4 rebounds, 3.2 steals and 3 assists per game while shooting 61% from inside the arc, 56% from three-point range and 86% from the free throw line.
Mosqueda-Lewis is now a finalist for the prestigious Gatorade National Girls Basketball Player of the Year award to be announced in mid-March.
