Hi Dave, does school start earlier this year? Cuz it sure seems that the season starts sooner. The Centaurs have rarely played week 0 games in the past and this year is no exception as they open at West Torrance on 8/24 in week 1. West has been the traditional opening opponent for the Centaurs the past few years and West's coach Holt usually has his kids ready to play. They are a good opening for the Centaurs. A challenging team, but not out of their class. The season holds great potential for the Centaurs as they have been performing exceptionally during passing league. Culver has a huge hole to fill with the graduation of 3 year starter Jonathan Martin at QB. Passing league suggests that they might have filled the spot well. The Centaurs will be hard pressed to advance in the playoffs as they have moved from Division 11, to 7. While 3rd place will likely get them into the playoffs, second place would make them a virtual certainty to make it. They should be able to win 3 in league with Hawthorne being the most dangerous of those 3 as they have a RB with 4.5 speed that they did not see last year. Lawndale & El Segundo will be the other 2 expected playoff teams from the Ocean League with El Segundo also competing in D-7.
I am wondering if the start, have to do with the finish. CIFss finals will now finish on Thanksgiving weekend, perhaps an opportunity to drive up attendance at the sectional finals for the CIF.
The CIF mentioned that the early start is because the school year has changed and will now begin and end earlier this year.
Ya everything is starting a week earlier including the state finals. So CIF Finals is Thanksgiving weekend, state regionals is 11/30-12/1, and finals are 12/7-8.
