Here are my projections for D-11 week 1, followed by the actual results:
#1 Arcadia loses big to highly regarded Div 2 private Cathedral.
- Did not have to be a brilliant clairvoyant to see this coming, but the 49-0 loss has got to feel a little disappointing to Arcadia. A still tough test this coming week against Hart(0-1), but more reasonable than the Cathedral matchup. Problem for Arcadia is that they had trouble defending the pass and Hart is likely to also exploit that.
#2 Arroyo gets another victory this week by just 1 TD over Temple City.
- Arroyo was able to take care of business, winning 27-8 with their defense and run game particularly doing well in the contest. The D held the Temple City QB to 130 yards passing with just 1 TD and 3 interceptions. The Temple City run game was held to just 68 yards rushing on 24 carries. The Arroyo run game was in good hands with senior Steven Ocariz running for 173 yards & 3 TD's on 18 carries. Arroyo Junior QB Ernesto Camacho had his struggles but was still 19 of 31 for 168 yards with no TD's and 1 interception.
#3 St. Genevieve beats #12 Heritage Christian of Northridge by 2 TD's.
- Looks like this game must have been cancelled with all the heat & smoke in the San Fernando Valley from the fire.
#4 Culver City eeks out a win over West Torrance with both teams scoring at least 25 points.
- Culver City was cruising in this 58-27 victory, in the fourth quarter, however it was somewhat tighter earlier in the contest having been tied 14-14 at one point. Culver QB Jonathan Martin threw for 516 yards & 5 TD's while running for 101 more & 2 TD's. He had plenty of assistance from his receiving corps who broke off several long runs from short passes.
#5 Rancho Mirage loses a close contest to Shadow Hills.
- It looks like this one was a close as I thought it would be. Rancho won 20-14. Rancho was a conservatively efficient 6 of 10 passing for 96 yards while running for 203 yards, 127 of those by Marques Prior and his 3 TD's. Shadow Hills leaned on their sophomore QB for 237 yards passing but he was intercepted twice and their run game could only muster 82 yards on 22 carries.
#6 Hillcrest of Riverside loses by 1 TD to Notre Dame of Riverside
- Hillcrest lost by a little more than a TD, the final being 25-49. They face a much more reasonable challenge this week as they host Chino (1-1), a team with a power rating in the same neighborhood as Hillcrest.
#7 Westminster beats Garden Grove by 1 TD
- Westminster beat Garden Grove 21-17, pretty close to my projection. They face a modestly tougher opponent this week in Marina (2-0)
#8 Pasadena, beats Maranatha of Pasadena by 10 points.
- Pasadena lost to Maranatha 21-36. Maranatha's QB went 13 of 22 for 227 yards
#9 Segerstrom has a blow out win against inferior D-13 team Saddleback.
- It was a easy as I projected with Segerstrom winning 38-0. Unfortunately for Segerstrom, they now face a much tougher El Modena (1-0) who are also stepping up in terms of talent the opponent has.
#10 Highland gets a 1 TD win against Thousand Oaks.
- did not realize this game is not until next week!
