Here are just a few games I find interesting. I wish I could see them all.

Rancho Cucamonga at Vista Murrieta: I love this match-up for both schools. I saw Vista last week vs. Murrieta Valley. Their QB is a hard nosed football player that willed his team to victory. They will be a tough opponent. I saw Rancho Cuc early in the season before they were a complete team. I would have never guessed, when I saw them, that they would defeat Upland and win the Baseline League title. They are on a roll. This one could be a classic.

Redlands East Valley at Norco: I think a lot of Norco. They have a balanced offensive attack and play sound defense. I would be surprised to see them lose this game, but it can happen. This is a rematch from Week 4 when Norco won 52-37. It is tough to beat the same team twice in one season. REV is a quality opponent, and I have to believe they get a slight advantage because they lost earlier. But will it be enough to win in the playoffs? We will see.

Heritage at Upland: Two teams that perhaps went into week 10 just a little overrated and came out on the losing end of their respective league championship games. Which one is better prepared to bounce back. I think a lot of Coach Broach and his staff with the Patriots. They will be tough, physical, and ready. Coach Salter is not exactly new to this playoff thing, and in fact, he has only lost one first round playoff game dating back to 2008. What happens when an immovable object comes up against an unstoppable force? The answer may lie in this game Friday night.

The Culver City Centaurs (8-2, 4-1) closed out their regular season with an easy 70-6 victory over the Beverly Hills Normans (2-8, 0-5). There will be no easy teams in the playoffs though and the Centaurs did manage to draw a first round home game, perhaps as the third or 4th seed.

But the opponent will be the Santa Barbara Dons (6-4, 3-2) who finished in a three way tie for second place in the Channel League. The local Santa Barbara paper says they like to change their name to the "Golden Tornadoes" whenever they make the playoffs. The Dons needed to win their final game against the Dos Pueblos Chargers (6-4, 3-2) to achieve the playoff spot they got with the good luck of a favorable draw among Channel League teams when a tiebreaker is needed. They beat the Chargers 24-7 but the heavy running Chargers did keep the game close for quite awhile. The Dons had only a 6-0 lead at the half. After falling further behind, the Chargers were threatening to tie it up in the final minute of the third quarter. But sophomore back-up QB Deacon Hill connected with junior WR Jackson Gonzales on a screen pass that went 59 yards for a TD with good blocking. Backup Dons QB Deacon Hill will likely be the starter for the Dons in the playoffs as regular starter Frank Gambardella suffered a fractured collar bone in the prior week's game.

It looks like both of these teams like to run a spread offense dominated by their passing games. There is the possibility of a high scoring affair in this contest. The Dons have scored as many as 54 points in one contest and not allowed more than 34 in any one game and that was to a very good Pacifica (9-1) of Oxnard team. The Centaurs have scored 70 once, 60+ three other times, and never less than 27 in any one game this year. It will be interesting to see if the Dons can slow them down.

The playoff team busses for the Dons and the Dos Pueblos Chargers could draft each other on the freeway as they are both heading to the southbay as the Chargers drew an even tougher game against the Lawndale Cardinals (8-2, 5-0).The Chargers may catch one break and that is that senior star running back Jordan Wilmore has not been playing recently for the Cardinals. His status is unknown, so it is possible he could be back for this game. The Cardinals have been doing pretty well without him.

The Cardinals have held 6 opponents to 7 points or less. Without the services of Wilmore, lately, the Cardinals have been relying on the legs and arms junior QB Jalon Daniels, who I believe transferred from Narbonne after losing his starting job there. Senior WR/FS Stan Livingstone is a talented and dangerous target. The interior lines are big and loaded with talent including a somewhat smaller sized Naki Fahina.

The only other playoff team from the Ocean League are the Hawthorne Cougars (6-4, 3-2). They made it into the playoffs in Division 12, perhaps aided by a forfeit loss by the Santa Monica Vikings. The Cougars will have to travel to Arcadia to take on the Rio Hondo Prep Kares (6-3). The Kares are favored by 13 points. After watching their lackluster play against the Centaurs, I expect a 1 and done exit from the playoffs for the Cougars. They did not have their star QB for the last game of the season.

First place teams are always guaranteed a first round playoff home game. In div 1 there are nine first place teams, which means someone has to play a road game in the first round, doensnt seem right for some team.

I see 19 teams battling for 16 playoff spots this final regular season weekend.

Jason Heine and Max Bingham pace undefeated Torrey Pines to a 38-0 win in Beach Bowl

Willauer-Contributing Writer-Friday, October 26, 2018-LaCosta Canyon High School-Carlsbad, CA: Early touchdowns by USC baseball bound Max Bingham's 32 yard run 19 carries for 164 yards 7-0 and Caleb Jackson's 6 carries for 42 yards scored on a 12 yard run to go up 14-0 but Falcon qb Jason Heine was the star of the show as he scored 3 touchdown runs of 9, 32 and 32 along with 6 carries for 90 yards paced the top ranked and undefeated Torrey Pines Falcons at 9-0 by a 38-0 score in the 25th Beach Bowl rivalry with the winner of the game gets a Golden Surfboard.

Jason Heine: : "I ran three option plays for my three touchdowns as I give credit to the offensive line and they blocked well left open holes for us in this 25th meeting," "We prepared for LaCosta Canyon as like every game for the crowd but this is more of a rivalry game." This was one of my better performances throughout the whole game from the very first drive we were all in and knew that we couldn't be stopped." "As we prepare for the CIF we need to come out every contest but this is all about the playoffs."

The Falcons lead the series 16-9 (these schools have played each other in CIF Playoffs twice each winning 1 game). Lacosta Canyon's last win was a 13-3 win under Head Coach Sean Sovacool in 2015.

Both schools will await on who they will play in the CIF San Diego Section Playoffs.

Former LaCosta Canyon Head Coach 2008 CIF Section Football Champs partake in coin toss

Willauer-Lacosta Canyon High School-Carlsbad, CA: It was an exciting year here on the campus of LaCosta Canyon High School as the 2008 CIF Section Title Maverick Football squad, was honored along with their former boss Darrin Brown who was named the Honorary Captain and participated in the coin toss.

Coach Darren Brown is currently teaching at Carmel Valley Middle School with his wife of 23 years Michele who teaches at Oak Crest Middle School.

While with the Mavericks Darrin Brown coached the football team for 10 years finished with a 63-39 record along with 1 CIF Section Title where they defeated Escondido at Qualcolm Stadium 42-28 . Along with football, Coach Brown had coached Boys Volleyball from 1997 to 2000 where they won 4 league titles and 3 CIF Championships. 3 of former LaCosta Canyon players that Coach Brown coached are currently in the NFL. Wide Receiver Kenny Stills, Eric Magnuson currently with the San Francisco 49ers and Scott Quisenberry with the Los Angeles Chargers.

Former Coach Darrin Brown on his reunion at LaCosta Canyon: "There's nothing better then enoying high school football on a Friday Night and Coach Sovocool has done a great job of keeping the tradition going." "It's our 10 year reunion for us and I'm glad to meet with some of the former players tonight, it is the only CIF Championship that has ever been won in 2008."

"One of my former players and quarterback is Sebastian Frausto that played for me on the 2008 CIF Title Team and who did all the dirty work to get the job done and we have a ton of great football players here tonight."

"Our squad won the only 2008 CIF Section title with a 42-28 win over Escondido as we had a big lead everybody came in and let our 2nd and 3rd string players to play on the field at SDCCU Stadium."

"Right now I am coaching my girls and being a father."

It amazes me how fast the High School Football season goes...Here we are in Week 10...we have the DRAMA of our championship coming down to the last week between FmrOlineguy and D5fan...Will one of them win a fifth STAR and claim the title outright?...Or are they destined to share the Title...Don't forget, we have posters with no STARs whatsoever...This is it; one last shot for them to win a STAR...And then there are those like myself who would just like to win one more time before the season is over.

The Northview Vikings (9-0, 4-0) continue to be the top ranked team in Division 7 according to calpreps.com. They easily dispensed with the Rowland Raiders (4-5, 1-3) in their Valle Vista league game by a score of 45-0. Next week they will play the toughest team they have faced all year in the San Dimas Saints (8-1, 4-0), and this game will determine the Valle Vista League championship. The good news for the loser of next week's game is that they will both likely have a game the following Friday in the playoffs despite the results this Friday. These teams will finish first and second in league and both will likely get selections for the playoffs. San Dimas is rated #2 in Division 8 according to calpreps.com ratings. Obviously a highly recommended game for competitive entertainment value.

The Culver City Centaurs (7-2, 3-1) are rated #2 by calpreps.com. The Centaurs dominated the Hawthorne Cougars (5-4, 2-2) by a score of 62-14 to lock up any doubt about them making the playoffs. They still are mathematically challenged to stay in second in the Ocean League but that is just on paper as the Beverly Hills Normans (2-7, 0-4) stand no chance of defeating the Centaurs.

#3 are the Citrus Valley Blackhawks (6-3, 2-2) who suffered through their second consecutive Citrus Belt League loss, this time to powerhouse Redlands East Valley (6-3, 3-1) by a score of 49-14. The Blackhawks are currently in a third place tie with the Yucaipa Thunderbirds (5-4, 2-2). Both teams have achieved the 5 win minimum to apply for an at-large playoff berth but only the winner of their final league game, against each other, can claim guaranteed playoff eligibility. Another highly recommended Valle Vista game for the final week of the season. The loser could find themselves unable to garner a playoff spot.

#4 are the San Jacinto Tigers (8-1, 3-1). The Tigers lost to Mountain Pass league favorites, Citrus Hill (9-0, 4-0) by a score of 21-13. This weekend the Tigers face a much easier opponent, the Tahquits Titans (6-3, 1-3). Calpreps.com is projecting a 44-7 victory for the Tigers which would be a very good thing for them because it allows them to lock up sole posession of 2nd place and guaranteed playoff eligibility in Division 7.

MV had one good drive. They moved the ball but couldn't finish the drive and a three and out.

Vista has -1 yards offense

Big game for the title. I haven't seen MV this year, but the D is giving up alot of points to teams VM crushed. Does it come down to how many stops each D can make? I think if VM can play a relatively clean game they should be able to take this one. But it is a rivalry game so ya never know.

The Culver City Centaurs (7-2, 3-1) easily handled the Hawthorne Cougars (5-4, 2-2) in a laughable 62-14 victory last Friday. The Cougars offensive play was sloppy. The special teams were stupid in the case of a punt from 4th and very long deep in their own territory and the Cougar punter appeared to decide he would try to run for the first down. He made a good run but it was 4th & LONG in their OWN side of the field. He did not make it and on the very next play the Centaurs tossed a TD pass to add insult to injury. The Centaurs were up 49-0 with 6:38 still left to be played in the second quarter!

There was lots of playing time for back-ups. While mathematically the Centaurs could still drop into a third place tie in the Ocean League, it ain't gonna happen as they are playing the cellar dwelling Beverly Hills Normans (2-7, 0-4).

Hawthorne's task is substantially more difficult as the Cougars will travel to face the Lawndale Cardinals (7-2, 4-0). It appears the Cardinals might have played last week without the services of their star RB Jordan Wilmore. But the Cardinals still managed to dominate the El Segundo Eagles (4-5, 1-3) by a score of 22-7. Hawthorne already has the needed 5 wins to apply for an at-large playoff spot in Division 12 but it remains to be seen whether the field might be too crowded for the Cougars to get in. We will have to wait & see how everything shakes out after next week's games.

The remaining contest has El Segundo traveling to face the Santa Monica Vikings (4-5, 2-2) in a key battle for the third & final guaranteed playoff entry spot. If the Eagles win, they are slight favorites, they will make a three way tie for third place with each team having lost to one of the other.

D5fan wins four of the last five and swings away with the STAR!...It is his fourth STAR of the season and puts him tied atop our STAR Leaderboard with FmrOlineguy...Next week, one of them will win the title outright...Or one of us will play spoiler and force them to share it...Either way I call that a dramatic finish!

Week 9 saw the favorites again go 30-4, straight up. On the season the favorites are 270-69 straight up.

When the point spreads were included 13 games flipped to the dogs. That means the Favorites turned the tide on the Dogs, going 17-16...There was 1 Tie...Overall the Favorites still trail the Dogs 159-173-7.

Cael Patterson' s 3 three touchdown runs sparks Orange Glen Patriots to a 31-25 win over Tri City

Willauer-Contributing Writer-For the first time in 5 years the Patriots of Orange Glen have a way of winning key football games and experiencing their first winning season since 2014 when father Jason Patterson was named head football coach and finished 6-5. After 3 straight losing season the team is off to a good start with a 6-2 record and one of the reasons behind it is his son Cael Patterson known for his speed proved it again in front of the home fans at Richard Disney Stadiium at Orange Glen High School as he opened the game on a 98 yard kickoff return to take a 7-0 lead and had 27 carries for 143 yards rushing, contributed on 2 more touchdown runs of 5 and 38 yards as they defeated the 7-2 Eagles of Tri City Christian by a 34-25 score and ended their 4 game winning streak.

Jason Patterson Head Football Coach at Orange Glen: "Tri City Christian did a great job that put all of our guys in the box and forced us to do other things it forced us to respond but the Eagles came in with a good game plan we had to adjust but when Cael ran the ball we had seen something earlier our offensive lined blocked well on that key play he hit a good hole and made a good run it was fun to watch."

Other Orange Glen performers in the win, qb Ethan Villalobos 3 completions out of 4 attempts for 60 yards threw a 54 yard pass to Christian Valdez Torres (2 receptions for 58 yards) Morey Stewart had 5 carries for 58 yards and scored on a 31 yard touchdown run.

Running back Cael Patterson son of head coach Jason Patterson on his performance: "we were hyped at the beginning of the game and came out strong when I first caught the ball everybody made key blocks for us In the first half our offense started slow as I had 20 yards rushing in the first half after we made adjustments we were ready to play. On my 39 yard touchdown we attempted to put the ball but we did a fake our offensive line blocked for me as I made the key plays at the right time

For the Eagles of Tri City Christian, Landon Navarro carried the ball 7 times for 16 yards and scored on a 5 yard touchdown run, qb Kian Reid 12 completions out of 22 attempts for 174 yards scored on a 1 yard run and passed 14 yards to Noah Reitmyer (6 receptions for 100 yards)

Sione Vaki had a complete game with 2 touchdown receptions and a trio of fourth quarter forced turnovers: a forced fumble at the goal line, and a pair of interceptions to win the game. Impressive showing in essentially a league title game up north. Liberty should be the second seed in the North Coast Section Playoffs behind De La Salle.

Watching Kaiser's homecoming against Colton. KMs spread for this game is 34, but the real question is will Christian Hunter continue his streak of 300 yard games. The last time he didn't go over 300 yards was when Los Osos held him to 291 yards

#1 (according to calpreps.com) is still the Northview Vikings (8-0, 3-0) of Covina. They beat the Covina Colts (4-4, 1-2) 33-12 in Valle Vista League play. Northview will likely go undefeated in the regular season and has a fairly easy game next week against Rowland (4-4, 1-2) before the regular season ending showdown for the Valle Vista League championship against San Dimas (7-1, 3-0).

While Covina's league record would make you think they are in jeopardy of missing a guaranteed playoff spot for Division 9, that will not be the case as they are facing the two Valle Vista bottom feeders in their last two games, who don't stand a chance of an upset without a serious roster depletion for Covina. I expect Northview will get the #1 or 2 seed in the Division 7 playoffs, IF they beat San Dimas in week 10. The Vikings defense still has not given up more than 14 points in any one contest this year.

#2 are the San Jacinto Tigers (8-0, 3-0), #1 in the CIFss poll for D-7. The Tigers had to come from behind last week to beat the Hemet Bulldogs (4-4, 1-2). Hemet led 7-0 after 1 quarter but the Tigers tied it up in the second, took the lead in the third and put the game away in the 4th quarter with their third TD. The Tiger defense was led by 6-4, 240lb defensive end Kaleb Hervey, a beast of a player. The D intercepted 3 Hemet passes.

Tiger sophomore QB Kajiya Hollowayane grabbed the highlights with 255 yards passing and 62 rushing, going 18 of 26. Two of the catches were TD receptions by Hervey who had 177 of those reception yards, including one that went for 90 yards, on 6 catches. The Tigers will host the Citrus Hill Hawks (8-0, 3-0) this week. The #2 ranked team in Division 3 according to the CIFss poll. This game will decide the Mountain Pass League championship. The game is rated a toss-up.

#3 are the Culver City Centaurs (6-2, 2-1). They beat the El Segundo Eagles (4-4, 1-2), 28-0 by scoring 3 first quarter TD's and 1 in the second quarter before the lightning came and ended up cancelling the rest of the game. They next travel to face their one remaining dangerous league opponent, the Hawthorne Cougars (5-3, 2-1). Hawthorne beat Beverly Hills 21-0 in another game that was likely called early due to dangerous lightning strikes. A Culver City win will give them a better playoff position while the loser could find themselves in a tie breaker situation to determine who will be the playoff guaranteed third place league finisher.

#4 are the Citrus Valley Blackhawks (6-2, 2-1). The Blackhawks suffered their first Citrus Belt League loss of the year to a very tough Cajon team (7-1, 3-0). Cajon is the #1 ranked team in Division 3 according to calpreps.com. Now the Blackhawks have to come back and face the Redlands East Valley (5-3, 2-1) Wildcats. The Wildcats are favored by 2 TD's. If the Blackhawks lose to the Wildcats, then the final game against the Yucaipa Thunderbirds (5-3, 2-1) is vital and it projects to a very close game. If the Blackhawks lose both games, they will have to hope for an at-large playoff selection.
