Re: Here's more details per CIF press release

Why is a court involved in the south small school teams? This sounds contrary to the charter of the bowl. Who was the party bringing the lawsuit?

Re: Here's more details per CIF press release

I don't know any more than what the CIF is releasing. Here's what they said this morning about the lawsuit:

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Today's hearing in San Diego Superior Court, Department 67,
the court supported the California Interscholastic Federation's (CIF) interpretation of the
selection criteria and denied the request for injunctive relief filed by Christian Unified
School District and Zane Coffman.

Even more details per another CIF press release

CIF STATEMENT ON COURT DECISION REGARDING STATE CIF FOOTBALL BOWL CRITERIA

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Today's hearing in San Diego Superior Court, Department 67,
the court supported the California Interscholastic Federation's (CIF) interpretation of the
selection criteria and denied the request for injunctive relief filed by Christian Unified
School District and Zane Coffman.

Judge Dato stated in the preliminary court decision that, "The Court's function is limited
to ensuring that, in applying its own rules and procedures, CIF does not act in an
arbitrary or unreasonable manner. It has not done so in this case."

The court went on to state "Even without according deference (to prior court
precedents), CIF's interpretation appears to be the most reasonable."

"We want to congratulate all of the CIF Section Champions, but it is extremely
disappointing that the CIF had to spend thousands of dollars in this legal action that
could have been better spent in providing educational programs to the 1,547 member
high schools and nearly 800,000 participating student-athletes," stated CIF Executive
Director Roger L. Blake. "It is my hope that the focus returns to where it truly belongs;
on the student-athletes who just completed an outstanding fall sports season and
continuing to provide education based athletic opportunities for students."

Re: Even more details per another CIF press release

From what I understand El Cajon Christian is contending the rule of only teams that are D3 eligible with an enrollment under 500 is eligible for the D4 game

Re: Mark Tennis helps explain

Per a blog by Mark Tennis of CalHiSports:

In the Monday hearing, the school district, representing Christian of El Cajon, was trying to get the CIF to include its 12-1 football team in the field of eligible teams for the Division IV bowl game due to its enrollment being below the listed cutoff total of 500. Instead, the court said the CIF was correct in its interpretation of the criteria, which also stated that the CIF San Diego Section Division III champion should be in the Division II field of eligible teams.
Since View Park and Bakersfield Christian were the only two schools below 500 (other than El Cajon Christian) that won section titles in Southern California this season, it was an easy choice for those two to play each other. A problem could have occurred if Bakersfield Christian had not upset Mission Oak of Tulare 35-34 in its section final. If that had not happened, the CIF would have ironically had to choose a school with enrollment above 500 to play View Park.

Re: Mark Tennis helps explain

Hopefully the CIF can recop the cost of the hearing from the school. They deserve to have their costs reimbursed.

Seems there is a need to amend the small school selection criteria for both the noreth and south as there aren't many to chose from )more from north though). maybe sighly increasing the enrollment size, but then again it will make it tougher for the small schools competitively. North's best small school team Central Catholic plays like a strong D3 team. Might as well increase the enrollment a little and maybe increase D3 size a little for more numbers.

That court case was kind of crazy, but everyone is suing in So Cal especially in the league rearrangement.

That Centennial/SJB game should be very good.
