The Southern Section Council voted Wednesday to accept the appeal of Cathedral and created a new seven-team Serra League that will be made up of Alemany, Chaminade, Crespi, Notre Dame, Bishop Amat, Loyola and Gardena Serra for football only.

The Mission League will be Harvard-Westlake, La Salle, Salesian, Cathedral, St. Francis and St. Paul.

The Catholic Athletic Assn. had created two four-team leagues, but Cathedral was able to convince Council members that because of competitive equity, it did not belong in a four-team league made up of Loyola, Bishop Amat and Serra.

The decision is expected to anger CAA members who had voted consistently to have two four-team leagues. But the decision on Wednesday is final and lasts for four years.

"It's unbelievable," Serra Athletic Director Ted Dunlap said. "We're totally baffled."

The decision is expected to motivate CAA members to look for a response, but what recourse is available remains to be seen.

Schools will have to scramble to change football schedules.
