Talk about things going topsy turvy. Lawndale looked like it had all but mathematically locked up the Ocean League title coming into this week but had to forfeit 2 league games and 2 more non-league games due to an illegal transfer from Santa Monica. Apparently several players transferred from Santa Monica while their Samo coach became the head coach at Lawndale. No improprieties have been found on the part of the coach nor most of the transfers, but one student transfer submitted false paperwork that was discovered during an attendance investigation. Lawndale now has forfeit losses to Culver City, and, ironically, Santa Monica. They are in danger of missing the playoffs if they don't beat Hawthorne this week but should still be heavily favored in the game because they have likely league MVP QB Chris Murray leading the charge.
Culver City finds themselves suddenly tied for first place with an easily winnable game against Beverly Hills to close out league and the regular season. With Hawthorne likely to fall to Lawndale, CC should find themselves atop the Ocean League standings as the legally undisputed champions of the Ocean League. That should help them get a better playoff seeding as well.
Hawthorne controls their own fate with a 3-1 league record but must face the best team in the league, on the field anyway, in Lawndale. While it is not known what the level of contribution the illegal transfer made to the team, it is known the team was still able to get two league wins, including a key one against El Segundo without the transfer causing the game to be forfeited.
Since Santa Monica has already lost to Beverly Hills, I would assume El Segundo should have enough to beat Samo even if their QB is still injured. But will a win be enough to get El Segundo to the playoffs? Both of the teams they could end up sharing second place with have head to head wins against them. I am not sure where that factors in to the final decision about league placement.
