Some thoughts on Gym Rentals.

My experience at LA Harbor College, with our Athletic Director, was probably the best one I could ask for. This is what we set up.

1. I was the Gym Rental guy representing our school.

2. I had 2 million dollar liability and 1 million medical coverage (all sports programs paid a portion of the $550 fee). Our gym fee was $75 per hour. $60 for gym and $15 for supervision (read below).

3. Anyone that needed community gym time called me. I kept a master calendar, went to all sports programs with what they wanted in gym time in quarters (3 mos) at a time.

If you wanted an outside group to use the gym, they could piggyback on our gym insurance or provide their own. You also had to have a "supervisor" there. At first the school didn't want to pay gym supervisor, then I had them get $15 per hour, they had to open and close. We cleaned up ourselves and the Custodial Union got involved. So, we negotiated 1 hour of Custodial for every 8 hours of gym usage (an added fee to end users). So, you can see there is always people with there hands out at every school.

Also, I negotiated a 15% fee for my time (a lot) the school got 35% (they received zero before) and the College program that used it as a fund raiser got 50%. Before the school wanted $150 per hour, no one ever used the gym. In the first year we raised almost $18,000, everyone seemed to be happy. The local YMCA's, Boy's Clubs, etc. all got gym time. It was used 6 nights out of 7 per week. The program in season got priority. We had a waiting list of high schools, travel teams (volleyball and basketball). The program that hosted the event got to run a snack bar.

It's amazing how much can happen when adminstrations, coaches, programs and when community's come together. Having kids playing sports, in local gyms, should be the goal of every school and community. Yet it is a mess! More graffitii, more crime, more everything. Keep em tired and in the gyms I say.
