The Culver City Centaurs (5-1, 1-0) easily handled Ocean League opponent, the Santa Monica Vikings (2-4, 0-1) by a score of 54-14. One of the questions every year is will the status quo remain the same in the league, and at least for the last few years, Culver has been dominant over Samo. Ever since coach Travis Clarke took his act over to Lawndale High (4-2, 1-0).

Centaur Sophomore QB Zevi Echaus returned to the playing field after missing a couple of games due to injury and shook the rust off for four TD passes and 242 yards. RB Joshua Ford contributed 118 yards rushing on just 8 carries. Two of them going for TD's. Jahmal Glaspie had 2 of the TD receptions. Tanner Duve had a 93 yard TD reception on a quick slant and the electric Kevin McGuire accounted for the other after receiving a screen pass at midfield.

The Centaurs amassed a combined 524 yards passing and rushing. Samo had 196 passing but was minus 58 in the run game due to several backfield stops and several sacks. The Centaurs cannot take much glee in this first league game win as it may turn out that the Vikings are the fifth place team in league. Plus, the Centaurs travel to take on the Ocean League favorite Lawndale Cardinals next week.

The Lawndale Cardinals had an even easier game of it in beating recent league doormat, the Beverly Hills Normans (2-4, 0-1). Lawndale was up 35-0 after one quarter and 42-0 at the half. They cruised to a 61-0 victory. Not surprising against the lowly Normans. I still think Beverly Hills is slightly better than what they were a year ago. Lawndale's game against the Centaurs will likely determine who will be the Ocean League champions. The game is rated almost a toss-up. Beverly Hills should have it a little easier against El Segundo, the projected loss is supposed to be only 52-3.

The El Segundo Eagles (3-3, 0-1) should be pretty steamed after falling to the Hawthorne Cougars (4-2, 1-0) by a score of 41-28. The Eagles now find themselves in the unenviable position of having to beat either the Centaurs or Cardinals to get any shot at a top three position in league and a guaranteed playoff selection.

There may be a few wild card entry options from Division 7 for the Eagles and of course they would probably be placed in the opposite side of the bracket from the Centaurs. The Cougars scored 1st but El Segundo had the next 2 scores to be up 14-7 in the second quarter. But the Cougars got the next two TD's, one with less than minute left before the half on 60 yard pass play. The Cougars were successful on a 2 point conversion to go up 21-14 at the half.

The Eagles responded with a 16 yard TD run in the third quarter to tie the score. Hawthorne responded with a score followed by another Eagle score getting it all knotted at 28-28 with 3 minutes left in the third. The Cougars were able to hold off the Eagles in the fourth quarter along with two more TD's, one of them with less than a minute left in the contest.

The Cougars will travel to face the Santa Monica Vikings this week and while the calpreps.com rating system is picking the Vikings to win by 1 point, I think the Cougars should be favored, especially after their performance against the Eagles. The Cougars might be one of those teams that will continue to improve as the season progresses.
