For the Boys Open Division Finals 18 points by Obinna Anayanwu and 16 by Thomas Notarainni paced the top seed Cathedral Catholic Dons at 24-8 on the season as they defeated the 2019 defending CIF Section Champion and 3rd Falcons of Torrey Pines at 26-5 by a 59-51 score.
Will Cunningham Head Boys Basketball Coach at Cathedral Catholic: "From the beginning to the end it was going to be a battle, we played them early in the season with a legendary coach (John Olive) of Torrey Pines." "This is our second year playing in the Open Division as most of our guys returned from last year as they know each other very well we knew it was going to be a battle to the end as we persevered."
"In the first game when we played Torrey Pines at their Falcon Christmas Tournament that game went back and fourth the whole time, in tonight's game in the first half we missed layups and committed too many turnovers." "When we trailed by 6 our offense executed well and looked for key baskets to put us up 34-30 we made great plays and looked for the open shots in a game like this you need extra possessions to stretch it out." "Our squad did well rebounding the ball in the second half and did well executing on offense." "Obinna Anayanwu and Thomas Notarainni have been our leading scorers throughout the season second half they came through for our squad."
Stanford bound Brandon Angel led the Falcons with 16 and teammate Chris Howell contributed with 12.
Both of these schools will await word of the CIF State
