Controversy has erupted over the transfer of Santa Ana Mater Dei senior forward Mario Soto to Saddleback Valley Christian.

He has sought immediate eligibility from the Southern Section via a change of residency, but Mater Dei has yet to sign off on the transfer, Southern Section spokesman Thom Simmons said.

Soto has hired an attorney, John Manly, who is alleging that Soto was subjected to bullying at the school for three years.

Manly, a Mater Dei grad who has sued his alma mater more than a dozen times since 1997, said he wrote a letter to the Diocese of Orange last week asking "the diocese to take action. There ought to be severe repercussions for the coaching staff," he said.

On Friday, former Santa Ana Mater Dei basketball player Mario Soto received bad news. The Southern Section denied his hardship appeal, likely ending his senior season. He transferred to Saddleback Valley Christian and sought immediate eligibility via "individual student safety incidents."

He cannot appeal to the state CIF. The only other recourse would be to take legal action.

Mission Hills Alemany, a Pac-5 Division semifinalist this past season, has reached agreement to play City Section Division I champion Crenshaw in week four this fall at Alemany.

Congratulations to Stanley Johnson (Mater Dei) and Thomas Welsh (Loyola) for making the McDonald's All-American team.

Jeff Engilman, a former head coach at Sylmar and Arleta who retired in 2010, has ended his retirement. He has joined the Golden Valley coaching staff to be an assistant under new Coach Dan Kelley, who was an assistant to Engilman at Sylmar and Arleta.

"I'm tryng to help the kid out," said Engilman, 63.

Engilman lives in Acton, so the trip to Santa Clarita is even closer than his days driving to Arleta. He insists he's calm, cool and mellow, hardly what he used to be during his coaching days.

These days, no one stays retired. Bill Redell, 72, just returned as coach at Oaks Christian.
Redell said of Engilman, "Tell him to call me when he's 72."

Redell and Engilman both wish their favorite play _ the fumblerooski _ was still legal in high school.
Engilman said he planned to help Kelley for this year.

The Southern Section will release its recommendations for new football playoff divisions on March 14, but there's already rumors about early recommendations. A final decision won't be voted on by the Southern Section Council until April 30.

Assistant commissioner Glenn Martinez was scheduled to meet with the football advisory committee on Thursday and discuss his early proposals for new divisions, but that meeting was canceled.

One proposal that's making the rounds is a Pac-5 Division that would remove the South Coast League and replace it with the Big 8, which includes Corona Centennial.

There will be time for appeals and complaints to be addressed, and there still needs to be a resolution of the lawsuit filed by St. Bonaventure, Oaks Christian, St. Lucy's and Damien against the Southern Section.

A federal lawsuit filed by St. Bonaventure, Oaks Christian, Damien and St. Lucy's against the CIF Southern Section appears headed for binding arbitration, with a decision expected in March. That's the speculation of individuals close to the schools but not in position to speak on the record.


Lawyers for the Southern Section and the schools have refused to provide an update on the case. The judge in the case encouraged lawyers on both sides to seek a private mediation.

The schools have been trying to prevent the Southern Section from moving their athletic teams from the Northern Area to the paraochial area starting in 2014-15. If even one school succeeds, it would force the areas involved to meet again and revise their leagues for the coming cycle.

Schools have been finalizing football schedules for the fall, and they might need to be changed depending on the outcome of the case.

Also, private schools in March start sending out acceptance letters to incoming freshmen, so having closure to the case is important for everyone involved.

I am hearing it is official that Dan Kelley has accepted the job to become head football coach at Golden Valley High School in the Santa Clarita valley. Kelley was 26-7 during a three year stint as the head at Arleta High including two league championships and only one league loss in three years. A particularly impressive stat to GV football fans in that GV has never won a Foothill league game.

Here's an update from the Under Armour Junior Combine at St. Petersburg, FL where players are now checking in:

"2015 QB Tyler Hilinski just came through registration. The Upland, Calif.,
quarterback threw for more than 3,000 yards with 39 total touchdowns and eight
interceptions.

Hilinski is waiting for signing day. Northwestern has
talked a lot about an offer, a trip to ASU is planned for January and Oklahoma
has been pretty involved. Cal is also involved.

Upland's coach talked to
Notre Dame and Michigan State. He said it's very promising but [Hilinski is] anxious to get
his first offer.

Oaks Christian announced Tuesday night that Jeff Woodruff has resigned as football coach to pursue college opportunities.

Woodruff, a former college assistant, took over the program two years ago. There was reported disagreement within the program of late.

Longtime offensive assistant Casey Clausen recently left to become coach at Calabasas.

Former Coach Bill Redell could be returning as head coach, according to Oaks Christian supporters. Redell has continued to work for the school and has said he was wrong to resign two years ago.

The school has scheduled a meeting with players and parents for Thursday.

At 33, former Alemany High and Tennessee quarterback Casey Clausen is about to become a head coach for the first time. He has has been chosen to take over the program at Calabasas High. The Coyotes were 0-10 last season.

Clausen has been a key assistant for six years at Oaks Christian. He will bring along his brother, Rick, another former college quarterback who has been an assistant with the Lions.

"I think it's a great opportunity," Clausen said.

Former UCLA receiver Mike Sherrard is expected to take over as offensive coordinator at Oaks Christian.
