Interviews From Last Feb's Nike Extravaganza Feat. Best Players Nationswide

Last February, as the eyes of the sports world focused on New York City for Super Bowl weekend; the eyes of the prep basketball world were squarely affixed on the opposite coast. The Nike Extravaganza was hosted at Mater Dei High School in Santa Ana and featured a national line up of elite talent from all over the country and Hoops Factory TV was in attendance (shout outs to Indi Hoops). This episode is jam packed with some of the best prep basketball talent from all over the country.
First up was Jahlil Okafor, the #1 player in the country and Duke recruit, talked about the joy of winning despite immense expectations and the camaraderie he gets from the basketball community. We also catch up with Daniel Hamilton, UConn commit and younger brother of NBA swingman Jordan Hamilton, who was refreshingly raw and unfiltered followed by Jordan McLaughlin whose performance at the Extravaganza had the whole gym buzzin'. Hamilton's teammate Tyler Dorsey was next up, and spoke candidly about playing the point at the next level and college recruitment.
Sedrick Barefield, who we caught up with for the third time this season, stopped by to talk technique and becoming a leader on a team that ended up in the CIF State Final. Barefield's former Compton Magic teammate, Rex Pflueger, was next on the docket and talked about his performance the Hoop Hall Classic and so much more. The elite talent did not stop with Georgetown commit Paul White dropping bye to discuss coming back from injury followed by his Whitney Young teammate and St. Louis recruit, Myles Reynolds. Cory Henson who will be attending Wagner College next year talked fatigue and conditioning after having traveled from Washington D.C.
Johnny Vasser talked goals for college at Northwestern and Deontae North also looked forward to his time at Long Beach State. Dylan Osetkowski talked about expanding his game followed by California Supreme (AAU) coach, Mike Law. Ryan Silver was next up and talked about his partnership with Under Armour. We end the episode with a pair of coaches; Reggie Morris Jr. from Redondo Union talked about coaching elite talent including Russell Westbrook and DeMatha's Mike Jones talked about replacing a bona fide legend in Morgan Wootten.

West Valley Division Rankings Week 8

No change in the Top 10 this week as all teams won or had a bye.
in our view 7 teams secured playoff spots.
There are a few big games this week with playoff ramifications.

1. (1) Mission Viejo (3-0 7-2) Mission cruised to an easy 42-21 win over San Juan Hills to secure a playoff spot. This week MV hosts #9 El Toro to finish its season. A Diablo win secures a league title, a loss presents a big mess. Next: #9 El Toro (1-1 6-2)

2. (2) Upland (2-0 6-2) Upland continues to dominate Baseline opponents as the Scotts blew out lowly Los Osos 38-0. Lets see if this weeks opponent can present a challenge for U-Hi. Next: Rancho Cucamonga (2-1 5-3)

3. (3) Tesoro (2-1 7-2) Tesoro routed Dana Hills 52-12, no surprise here. This weeks their bye week, with a week 10 contest with SJH. Tesoro should be no worse than the SCL second seed.

4. (4) Chino Hills (2-1 6-2) CH rebounded from a loss to the IVA's with a route of Damien, 41-14. This week CH will have its hands full against a team who badly needs a victory to keep it season going. Next: Etiwanda (2-1 4-3-1)

5. (5) Hart (3-0 6-2) Hart's in the playoffs after beating Golden Valley 38-24. Is Hart sleep walking through league? Next: Saugus (1-2 2-6)

6. (6) Vista Murrieta (3-0 6-2) VM is in after a 50-3 win over Mesa. Let's see if VM has a hick-up this week. Next: Chaparral (1-2 2-6)

7. (7) Los(t) Al (3-0 7-1) LA beat Marina 49-6 to earn a playoff spot. Should be another blow out this week too. Next: Huntington Beach (1-2 2-6)

8. (8) Valencia (3-0 6-2) Valencia rolled with an easy 41-0 victory over West Ranch to secure a playoff spot. Canyon (2-1 4-4) should present a decent challenge for the Vikes.

9.(9) El Toro (1-1 7-2) ET had a bye to get ready for rival MV this Thursday night. An ET win would really send shockwaves in the SCL. Even if ET loses we think they get an at-large bid.

10. (10) Edison (3-0 6-2) Edison had no trouble whatsoever with Newport Harbor, winning 48-7 to clinch a playoff spot. This week is the big game with its rival. Next: Fountain Valley (1-2 5-3)

others:
Great Oak - (2-1 6-2) likely sealed a playoff spot with a win over TV. this week Mesa
Rancho Cucamonga (2-1 5-3) Could have saved it season with a hard fought 16-9 win over Etiwanda. Has its hands full this week with #2 Upland.
Etiwanda (2-1 4-3-1) Needs a win to keep its playoff hopes alive. Has a shot if the offense can muster some consistency. Faces #4 Chino Hills (2-1 6-2)

Sunkist Guru

This one is for you. My oldest played 2 yrs @ Santa Ana JC and started both years. He is a computer program engineer @ Boise State with a current internship. My next is a Senior with 53 rec. 883 yds. 16.7ave. and 7tds. His GPA for the semester is 3.90. My other is 8 and kicking ass on his team. Talk to Ward Clever when you get a chance. C'mon bro?

Rancho Cucamonga 16. Etiwanda. 9

Great game. Both offenses were bad, was it the defenses, partly yes
Rancho lead 3 - 0 but missed a PAT and 2 Fg"s.
Etiwanda tued the score at 9 as RC had a snafu on the snap during a punt. Punter wasnt payinmg attention.
Ranchos besf play was a busted play late in the 4th qtrwhich eventually lead to the winning score.
Etiwanda had too many penalties rancho blocked a FG w the score tied at 9. Etiwanda tried a fake punt that came up short
Rancho played solid defense.
Nice to see and talk to sone of the boys from the inland valley all stars

La Quinta 34, Palm Springs 29

After a 14-0 start by the Blackhawks. Palm Springs scored and from then on it was a back and forth game.

Too close for comfort, Palm Springs ranked 6th is a good team but I thought one dimensional. LQ held them to a net 4 yards rushing but gave up 367 yards in the air. They exposed a weakness.

La Quinta had a more balanced attack with 260 yards rushing, 106 yards passing.

I have no doubt Palm Springs will bounce back. I think they'll at least make the quarter finals and a good chance to make the semis.

This was La Quinta's test in league besides a one point loss to Heritage in pre-season. How far they go in the playoffs will yet to be seen. I see them making at least the semi's. Can they make the Finals? Stay tuned......

Read the link for the whole game summary.

Showdown between La Quinta and Palm Springs.

Burbank Holds Off Glendale

Fohi/Fontana Truth

Guys, this is my first and probably last time on this message board. I'm on because I've heard a lot of stuff about Fohi last week that seemed out of character for them and their head coach. I'm referring to the allegations of Coach Crump and his players being at Summits game last week and causing a ruckus. I can assure he was not there. I went straight to the source and was told he did not go to any game that weekend even though they had a bye. I also checked with a trusted friend on the Miller staff who verified Crump was not there. Yes, there was a afro-American Fohi coach there, but it was not Crump.
As for the players, let's face it, boys will be boys. It doesn't make it acceptable but we all know kids like to jaw jack and run their mouths.
Fontana has a rich history a rich history and the focus should be what's on the field, not off. As I've said this is my first time on this board. I have been on other boards in the past but found the format where people can say anything and hide behind nicknames not to my liking. As I said, I went straight to the source and asked Crump and he said he was not at Summit's games. I believe him. I would suggest anyone else that has a question give him a visit or call.
